There are not going to be any nerfs that affect your gameplay in the near future. The one nerfed talked about on the SoTG only hampers the perma-stealth build’s playstyle. If you like the class, stick with it. ANet is not going to make a class completely unviable.

ps i miss you even though i dont like you but i need you even though i dont want you..
Cutest little thing, ever.
Extremely well done survey. Thanks.
There is no way to get free tournament tokens at the moment. The chests will only give you the paid ones. Hopefully this shall soon be fixed.
I’ve only been to hot joins once or twice ever since they added the solo queue feature. Reason being, hot join is a zerg fest, and you get players that are all less than rank 10s. Solo queue has much more of a challenge, especially when facing pre-made teams. Beating premades with a solo/duo queue gives you such a great sense of accomplishment. Not to mention, your role in a team is tested to a much better degree in tournament play than it would ever be in hot joins. Of course, hot joins is easy glory, especially for a thief like myself.
So many thieves and mesmers in 8v8s, because 8v8s are a zerg fest and the ability to run away from zergs in invaluable. No other class besides those two can boast of getting away unscathed when accidentally running into a group of 8. Well, those two and to some extent, bunkers. Hot joins should not be considered PvP.
Thief was my first (and my main) class in GW2. Running AC for the first time, I got my kitten beat up as well. That’s probably when I realized how important it is to l2dodge as a thief. Do not expect to tank mobs, or even take more than a hit or two. The class is designed to do its thing within melee range and get out. You need to constantly have your eyes on your enemy’s animation and get the dodge timings down. Blind fields + auto-attacks are going to be your bread and butter while in melee range. The thief squish can be a little annoying at first, but it’s immensely rewarding as by the time you reach level 60, you’re going to be a beast at dodging, which will carry over if you play any other class as well.
Shortbow happens to be my favorite weapon for the thief as well, and I use it almost exclusively in PvE. I’ve messed around with a lot of trait/utility setups, but this happens to be the one that complements my playstyle:
Deadly Arts (0) – N/A
Critical Strikes (30) – Furious Retaliation, Critical Haste, Executioner
Shadow Arts (0) – N/A
Acrobatics (20) – Power of Inertia, Vigorous Recovery
Trickery (20) – Uncatchable, Bountiful Theft
Utilities:
Withdraw, Shadowstep, Shadow Refuge, Signet of Shadows
The build relies heavily on dodging and mobility. You will almost always have swiftness, and when you don’t, the Signet of Shadows will make up for it. Acrobatics line combined with all the vigor will never leave you short of dodge rolls. Caltrops upon dodge ensure your enemies get cluster bombed before they even reach you in melee range. Hide in Shadows works as well, but Withdraw has so much more to offer in this setup. HiS has a decent immobilize which does help, but the instant heal from Withdraw + the evade + vigor every 15 seconds is amazing. Bountiful Theft is a craazeh trait. Steal boons from bosses and give them to yourself and all your allies + more vigor.
Oh, and as alternate weapon, I use a D/P. Blind field is amazing in PvE (not to mention the on demand stealth when you’re getting your kitten beat up or when you need to immobilize your target), Shadow Shot gives you pretty good target uptime, auto-attack obliterates everything Heartseeker hits like a truck combined with Executioner.

Just gotta outplay em, man, you know what I’m saying?
1. Dodge the first ride of lightning. They can’t get their combo off. If you do get knocked down, stun-break away before you get hit by Burning Speed/Fire Grab/Ring of Fire/Arcane BS.
2. Ele is going to switch to earth attunement. Watch out for magnetic grasp. Staying some distance away from it will help. Continue to short-bow, beat the crap out of it.
3. Next up is water attunement. Wait at a distance till the frost aura goes away. Proceed to spank. Post frost-aura while they are still water attuned would be the best time to land your burst.
4. At this point, either they are going to switch back to air attunement for shocking aura or go to fire for another attempt at a burst. If it’s the former, stay away till the shocking goes away and finish the ele off. If it’s the latter, run into them expecting another burning speed that’s going to completely miss you (or dodge while running into him if he dodge rolls away and is positioning himself to land it). Finish him off here before updraft gets off CD.
Other tips:
1. Churning Earth: A lot will run lightning flash with it, so dodge after counting to 3. If you have a pistol off-hand, beat the kitten out of them while they cast this and interrupt it at 3. Watch out for stability.
2. Never open with your burst. They will be expecting it. Sometimes, I like to fake my burst to get their mist form out of the way. This will help enormously.
3. Immobilize screws them up sooo much. Hide in Shadows + Bow 1 to immobilize and proceed to cluster bomb from a safe distance. Check their attunement to see what gap closers they are going to be using and be ready to deal with it (Fire – Burning Speed, Water – Frozen Burst to slow you down or nullify your HS, Air – RTL, Earth – Magnetic Grasp).
4. Caltrops will help enormously. Criple screw them up, and they will need to condi-cleanse from water. Make them switch to water attunement and burst them down once they do.
I like the suggestion of Smoke Screen upon 25% insead of Blinding Powder, but that might be a little too much to ask.
Another thief approving of Caed’s skills ^^
This might be of help. Various ways classes can help against stealth stomps:
Warrior – HB, Shield Bash
Thief – Shadow Refuge/Blinding Powder teammate
Mesmer – GS knockback, Chaos Storm, Mass Invisibility, Illusion of Life
Engineer – Stealth from smoke field/blast finisher, Big Ol Bomb, Shield 4, any of the other pushbacks
Ranger – Quickness revive, Traps on downed player, pet fear, Elite Spirit
Necromancer – Fears, wells on downed player, Signet
Guardian – Any of the infinite knockback skills
Elementalist – Earthquake, Updraft bla bla
I’m looking for a group of dedicated players that wish to learn and progress together. The players must yearn to be proficient in their team roles, be committed towards their team and be able to handle constructive criticism. Minimum rank of 30 required. My info:
IGN: Nitschei
Rank: 43
Profession: Thief
Server: Anvil Rock (NA)
Time Zone: CST (US)
Since I shall be playing the role of a roaming thief, the specific roles I am looking for are a Guardian, Mesmer/Engineer, Elementalist and Necromancer, although adjustments and accommodations can be made. Feel free to reply to this post or send me a personal message, if interested.
Weapons
- Dagger (Superior Blood Lust)
- Dagger ( Superior Life )
Do not even work together.
Holy crap, report him.
I was not too happy about the thief nerf (S/D, especially was my favorite toy), the lack of ranger improvements and the terribly buggy quest line that came with the new patch.
And then I tried the Fractals. These dungeons have the right challenge, amazing mechanics and are simply beautiful. Thank you so much for them!
Whenever we have PUGs, we go with the 2-1-1-1 tactic. Otherwise, as a guild, there have been multiple occasions where we have completed the said event without a single death. It’s really hard, if not impossible, to get all the mobs down without proper communication.
Your rank doesn’t justify your game. Good stuff.
Yeah, they are lowering the number of sharks on that map.
This is sort of relevant. It’s in WvW, but still entertaining and fun to watch:

Well, this might be a little biased since I’m a big fan of daggers/stealth classes.
Mesmers. They have so much versatility, so much utility, it’s just crazy. Once you do master all that Mesmers have to offer, they are extremely rewarding.
I’m not sure why everyone here keeps saying Elementalists aren’t very rewarding. They are! Once you do master this class, you’ll be amazed by all the possible combos at your disposal, the adaptability and the amazing mobility you get.
Thieves are really easy to get into, since you get to spam the skill of your choice repeatedly. However, this won’t be very rewarding. Usually having low defenses, you rely on your evasion, mobility and stealth to survive. The high damage output means once you do master your defenses, this class can be extremely deadly.
Overall, I’d say the class design in this game is sooo good that you would want to go with the class whose gameplay you find the most interesting. The more you enjoy it, the more you learn about it, the better you get.
I just thought this was a little interesting. It’s a totally random pick-up group matchup. I see mostly thieves and a few mesmers.
Yeah, Ragnarok Online had some pretty cool assassin skills (the katar was an amazing weapon as well), and I really loved the infinite cloaking, but I obviously wouldn’t want it here.
“Is there anything that can even survive, let alone kill you?”
Ehtom – “People seem to mainly be concerned with thieves and while I can see the logic behind the complaints (1shot from stealth outside human reaction time is not fun) they are also squishy and not particularly useful in groups.
Warriors on the other hand just seem like god mode to me (I play Mesmer/Necro)… 100 skills gives ridiculous 1shot potential, they seem very tanky and hard to kill, they have alot of cc, they can easily run away from you and if you do down them they can just resurrect themselves and get back to the pain train. About 1/2 of everyone I see in sPVP is a warrior. Why does nobody talk about this, what am I missing?”
