Problems and worries about Fractals dungeon

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

I’m going to have somewhat of a rant here, but will add constructive criticism.

The first problem I have with the Fractals dungeon is DISCONNECTS. Yesterday I did 5 or so runs, and never did we end with 5 people in our party. In fact twice we had one disconnect on the first dungeon. Another time we had one disconnect on the last one, and then had a leaver as well, leaving us with 3 people to finish it, which really isn’t fun.
Why are you going back to inferior dungeon design, when you had it so right in the old dungeons?

A worry about Fractals I have is the huge splitting of player-base with difficulty scaling. Yesterday I had a friend (more like a dungeon “friend”, though) ask me if I wanted to join for Fractals. He was at level 5 or 6 difficulty, while I was still at 3. Now what reason did he have to take his team with me at a lower difficulty? Of course he took someone else and did his level 5 or 6 difficulty so he could further progress in difficulty scale, can’t blame him for that.
So what’s going to happen to people who take a break from the game, and come ingame after a few weeks? Do you think they’ll have people gladly joining them on their difficulty 1, when they could go on their difficulty 9001 for better rewards (or whatever higher difficulty is meant to give you).
I’m fearing this difficulty scaling thing is going to split up the community in way too many pieces, because what reason do people have to run lower difficulties?

These two problems worry me deeply and I would very much like a Dev Response. I’m already seeing a huge fracturing of the player base as some people look for low level fractals and others look for their highest, and people have no incentive to go down. I saw this in lions arch, one group each looking for fractals level 12, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 3, and 1. Each of these groups was looking for a good 10 or so minutes in chat with no luck. I know there has to be some way from people jumping up fractals too quickly, but this fracturing of the player base is unseemly and makes finding a group a nightmare.

This hasn’t been a problem and I almost exclusively play my Mesmer. Illusionary Persona is an INCREDIBLE trait. I combine that with mainhand sword to basically tag everything in sight. Mesmer swords skills hit aoe so when things group, I hit multiple, and Mind wrack has a 900 range, so combined with the Illusionary Persona, I blink into mobs, tag them all and grab aggro with Mind wrack, and proceed to Blurred frenzy to keep the damage and tagging going. I swap to GS to insta-tag long range mobs, and the GS throw skill with multiple bounces can hit a lot as well. I keep Take Root as my elite so I can drop it as mobs spawn to auto-tag everything that is near me as well.

The whole notion here that other people having legendary weapons cheapens the ones other people already has is absurd.

If you have a cool girlfriend or boyfriend, and then someone else gets one, you know what happens? Two people have cool significant others.

I’m working on twilight. So is another guildie of mine. Does both of us having it somehow make having it worse or less cool? No. Besides, people forget, this game is played by millions. No one’s a special snowflake, no matter how much they delude themselves.

Thanks John, I’m really glad to see this. This is what makes your playerbase happy! Just the light nod that lets us know you are listening. I’m currently in the process of working on a legendary, and I’m totally fine with most of this process, as it all demonstrates some level of mastery, as people have previously pointed out (I won’t delve into that).

Even the clovers are OK, because they eventually normalize to the probability curve (though my friend who got 5 for 40 tries would probably punch me). You may get lucky with them and be done with them sooner (I got 27 out of 40 tries, for example), or you may be unlucky and it may take a bit longer, but getting lucky on clovers generally isn’t an earthshaking deal on the legendary weapons. It just saves you some karma and ectoplasm later.

The precursors, on the other hand, make me understand the term “Mystic Toilet”. I’ve seen people flush dozens and dozens and DOZENS of exotic weapons down it with no return for their effort. It’s disheartening to see the prices of the precursors rise every single day. There’s already a huge amount of gold going into this, and to rely on winning the lottery or racing to gain gold with the nonstop rising precursor prices is really disheartening. Some way to gain them on par with other difficult things would really do a lot to alleviate this.

To the people who are crying that this cheapens the legendary they have, or that ANET is caving in and soon they’ll be passing them out on streetcorners, John pointed out that this is an issue they’ve been tracking. Clearly, precursor prices and the difficulty involved in obtaining them isn’t where they intended it to be. Some people got them when they were still 30-60 gold. Will you deride them for getting them at that early stage as much as you deride someone who thinks 500 gold and counting on the price of a precursor or winning the lottery for one is unreasonable?

I deeply disagree with people saying the mesmer is bad at PvE. I regularly solo 3-4 mobs without difficulty. It’s all about knowing how to use your skills to take down enemies quickly while using your evasion/immunity skills to avoid taking any damage. Even 2 Veterans is quit doable long as I’m paying attention. Mesmers are not an easy class to master, so said by ArenaNet themselves, but they’re definitely not underpowered.

Traehern really isn’t that big of a scene stealer. He’s a compatriot, for sure, and plays an important role, but isn’t by even a small shot the main contributor (you) for the fall of Zhaitan. Also, very clearly, if you are complaining about Traehern, you didn’t play Nightfall with that infuriating, credit-stealing, scene-hogging, dead-weight, good-for-nothing Kormir, one of my most disliked characters ever. That was back before Arenanet realized that you should be the hero of your own story, not dead-weight baggage who does nothing, then steals the credit for all your hard work and ascends to godhood.

Why did Phantasmal Warlock Get Nerfed?

in Mesmer

Posted by: Sajuuk.5706

Sajuuk.5706

iWarlock is still pretty good, but it’s definitely a situation-based skill. I’m a critbuild, and on bosses (not even worldbosses, mind you) my warlocks will regularly hit for 6000 damage. So, that’s about 18,000 damage every six seconds on autopilot. I won’t complain about a 1.5 second nerf when I’m looking at that level of free damage. It’s not a bad skill for PVP, but I find Berserker to be vastly more useful and more distracting to foes.

Tybalt turning into Demi:

subtile Tybalt… Very subtile… x’D

This and pretty much everything Tybalt related. By far my favorite character in the game. I kept laughing out loud and people would look at me like I was crazy.

I also love the part in the sylvari mission where you have to drug the gladiator to get back Caladbog, and you end up drinking some of the hallucinogen yourself, and in the end start going as loony as the dude in the arena. Capped it off at the end when your Order of Whispers contact was all “Hmmm, stronger than we thought.”

Sajuuk.5706

Adding my voice to this. I can attend the event, and I still deeply disprove of how ArenaNet is handling it. Not wanting it to run at multiple times or at different times because of “spoilers” is incredibly foolish, disrespectful, and uncaring for a huge part of their fanbase. That’s like selling the final Harry Potter novel ONLY to the midnight launch crowd because someone could potentially ruin the ending for someone else who can’t buy it until later. People can easily avoid spoilers by averting their eyes to media, and some people don’t care about spoilers as long as they get to experience it for themselves.

“For those of you wondering, having the event at separate times for separate zones is actually one of the worst options. Whatever happens is going to be on livestreams instantly and then on YouTube about five minutes later. At least this way, everyone has a chance to experience it in the game, without having it spoiled by the rapid availability of video on the Internet.”

You know how this reads to me? I reads: “I think you’re too dumb to avoid spoilers on your own and don’t understand that this means some people won’t experience it at all, risk of spoilers or not.”

Costume brawl is horribly unbalanced...

in Halloween Event

And incredibly… hilariously(!) fun because of it. The costumes from the store have more abilities that offer a pretty good advantage, but I think it’s deeply fun either way, and nailing a solid hit or dethroning someone in a costume as a pig or owl or plastic spider is deeply satisfying.

It reminds me deeply of Super Smash Bros Brawl Minus, which instead of balancing things, made them so ridiculous and incredibly unbalanced and quirky that the game was more fun because of it! That’s the vibe I get from it, anyway. I mean, if your only goal is to rack up silly crowns, then yeah, it’s best to get a reasonably affordable costume or toy from the shop (I used gold to get mine), but I think that’s missing the true fun of it.

It’s strongly implied that this wasn’t one side, and that he actually copulated with Dwayna, as it’s said later on that Grenth’s mother is Dwayna and had a mortal scupltor for a father.

Sajuuk.5706

I agree that event needs fixing. It’s absolutely, 100% un-fun. I have seen groups get into arguments and nearly break apart over how to handle this fight. I’ve once been in a group that successfully did all-in. Every other group insists on corpse-runs rotating who’s in the room kiting. It’s absolutely awful that the majority of players feel that this really really un-fun strategy is needed, and feels opposite to what a well-designed encounter should be.

Additionally, to who pointed out specific class party combinations to pass this encounter, that defeats the stated purpose of the game that you do not need specific class groupings to clear dungeons (and that each class can fill each role). As a Mesmer, corpse running in that room is awful. I have a lot of powerful evasion abilities, yes, but with so many charr in the room it does little good as they get blown in quick succession and all go on cooldown. Consider the final boss fights in paths one and three. Both of them have bosses with very powerful attacks, but I can ration out evasion/block/immunity to deal with them. With 50 charr, that doesn’t work so well.

Tl:Dr: This encounter is simply un-fun the way it’s designed, and once I have what I need for my armor, I will never set foot in path 2 again until it’s changed.

I’m definitely not calling his motivation stupid (love), and I’m sure many people would choose love. What is stupid is the 5 years he spent in denial concerning his role in Snaff’s death and the failure of the assault on the Elder Dragon, which is reflected his whiny “It’s not my fault” tone that’s in every conversation he has up to a certain part in the story. He constantly jumps to wrong conclusions, makes poor decisions, and demonstrates that he’s pretty much the most useless member of Destiny’s Edge (thinking primarily with his short sword).

I like Precis, Power, and Crit damage, so going to second the call for Beserker’s armor. It’s a glass cannon build, but surprisingly survivable if you’re quick on your distortion and evasion skills. The staff is fantastic if you’re up against a mob with lots of conditions, I’ve easily and often hit with phantasmal warlock for over 6000 damage. It’s also a nice PVP build, and mind-wrack with illusionary persona can hit for a total 9000+ damage if they crit (I always bring deceptive evasion as a way to pump extra clones). I’m sure there are viable builds for +condition, but it’s not the route I chose.

Not to be too blunt on the point, but is it just me or is Logan the dumbest member of Destiny’s Edge? Every time he speaks I hear “Hodor!”, and I’m pretty sure this isn’t a bug.

Just to be clear, I have no issues with him as a character, he’s well built and defined, just like the others.

He’s just dumb. The others in Destiny’s Edge have flaws for sure, big flaws, and watching them argue is like watching the world’s most dysfunctional family, but pretty much every reason they failed ties back to Logan. If Logan hadn’t left, Eir’s plan would have worked (and she wouldn’t sound like Eeyore all the time) , Snaff would still be alive, the Crystal Elder Dragon would be dead or severely weakened, Zojja wouldn’t hate everyone, and Rytlock wouldn’t want to disembowel Logan on sight (probably). The others are messed up, sure, but this all goes back to what Logan’s been in denial over for the past 5 someodd years. If he started yelling “Honor!” he’d be Prince Zuko.

P.S. Not meant to be a super serious post, just having some fun.

Sajuuk.5706

I’m going to toss my two cents in on this. I love the mesmer portal skill, and I love how it has Z plane access. Being able to use it to move people up, down, and around is one of my favorite parts of being a mesmer. I don’t consider hiding in a base, and then using it to get people into the base a illegitimate strategy, we ALWAYS sweep our bases for hidden mesmers after a capture. If people are using it to glitch into bases, that’s one thing, but just hiding and porting people in is another. I can’t imagine how you’d get rid of that without changing the vertical plane access of the skill, and if that gets nerfed/removed, it would ruin this skill for me for every other usage, and It’d probably never show up on my skill bar again.
