I gave you some decent advice about the traits. It seems that points into the arms tree would benefit you more than the others.
And I thank you for that.
I’m actually running this setup now (GS+Rifle), it’s doing quite well. I get a bit of aggro, but then it’s mostly a matter of kitting with the rifle+dodges.
It’s just sad that swords can’t be as useful with a power build as GS.

Don’t play Thief, I have both a Warrior and a Thief lvl 80. And I quit playing Thief because you have VERY little options in weapons, and therefore, in skills available:
Daggers, Sword, Pistols, Shortbow. That’s it. Warrior on the other hand gets tons of weapons and this leads to a much more diversity of builds. This is what I like, having a choice and not being stuck on something because of lack of choice.
Thieves have mobility with their shadowsteps (especially if playing with Sword) but they really do feel squishy. Not only that, but what I really disliked in the end about the class is that it was mainly focused about spam. Of course they have utility skills in their weapon slots but honestly the class felt very repetitive.
With warriors you can play much more on weapon-swap and each skill has a cooldown (I’m talking about the weapons skills) which will make you think a lot more about what you’re doing and which combo would be good in this or that situation. Their mobility is also decent with all the skills (and even some traits) that get us rid of cripple/immob or any other condition. Like someone said, mainly swords/greatswords and warhorns.
But it’s just my opinion. Try each class in PvP mode to get an idea of their possibilities.

Sigh, seems like I won’t get any decent advice here. Between the trolls and the jerks acting like elitists. I’m not a pro at making PvE build that’s why I came here : for advices to help me to make a good build for a gameplay I’m enjoying.
Guess I’ll have to look somewhere else to get constructive replies.
Thank you for those who did put some efforts into writting their answers (and also reading the OP).
You want to see big numbers but you’re running a sword/axe tank build with defensive traits and knights gear? I don’t get it.
It’s not a tank build, 20 points in Defense and a good amount of toughness because as you can see the build is focused on melee. However like someone said, with about ~3200 armor you can get the aggro depending on the mob IA. Not mention that your position (close or far from the mob) also plays a role in the aggro. The damage too.
So I wanted some toughness because I don’t want to play a full berserk who goes down from a single random hit, like those warriors I saw during the few time I went to dungeons with my Thief. And imo vitality feels less useful than toughness and armor.
Furthermore, as I said, I like playing with swords and greatsword. It’s just a matter of taste and not about being the propveboy with the maximum damage. No, I just like the gameplay that swords and greatswords offer me. And I used to play Warrior in beta and the beginning of the game and honestly playing another GS+A/Shield is just boring in my opinion. The problem is Anet who did not care about adding more weapon skills so we could make our own gameplay with whatever weapons (like GW1) without being judged by…. random people on the internet.
(edited by Scar.1793)
don’t mind about this sigils, I did that quickly. I’m mainly talking about the weapons and the traits. You sure their timers conflict ? Didn’t know that, so thanks for the information.
Edit: Come to think about it, the points in Discipline don’t seem that useful, maybe I should put them into Tactics?

Hello,
I just got my warrior to lvl 80 after being bored with the Thief.
I wanted to have a decent build, I tried a condition build in PvE (S/S+LB) it was decent, but I wanted to see big numbers on my screen :P it didn’t have the feeling of a warrior.
What do you guys think about this build ? Note that I enjoy playing with both GS and sword, but I want to know if this build would be good because it has no ranged weapon, and sometimes bosses are so annoying in melee that you have no choice but to play with ranged weapons.
Here is the build :
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fIAQNAsXRjkO9uBPGPMxBEkCNsKMPGCgoIUKmD7A-jgyAYfBRiCIlBgEBlALiGblsIas6aMlLgGeR127ioVDA-e
The OP speaks the truth, backstab still needs some rework, I was running a toughness/condition damage (2k toughness, 18K hp). I was doing fine, without noticing a huge drop with my health until a D/D Thief came out of nowhere. I thought I could resist a little but just a few stealth (like 1 or 2) and I was low hp or already on the floor.
It was the only ennemy I was afraid of in the entire map. Needless to say it’s a pain to find a moment to make some damage with all the blinds/stealth/dodges/skill evades (Heartseeker/Death Blossom etc.).
And that’s coming from someone who owns a lvl 80 Thief.
Are the devs aware of this?? It seems quite illogical even in a fantasy game
Here’s one thing I hate about Guild Wars 2 :
When you choose a weapon you’re forced to play the way Anet chose. Whereas the game was branded like “you can play however you want”.
Just look at Skyrim : you can play anything and be efficient.
On the other hand in Guild Wars 1, with my warrior I use to play Sword+Shield and guess what, my build wasn’t around only about bleeds. I could manage the skills so if I wanted burst skills I got them.
In Guild Wars 2 you are just stuck with few skills on your weapon. Which is sad because I always liked the style of dual swords.
And this is not only a warrior issue, it’s on every class. It’s really shameful imo. I hope they’ll bring something new and interesting with the new expansion they’re working on.
And yet another pathetic crying thread about how OP Beserker Stance is. These forums are full of people not willing to find ways to counter, that’s why whatever Anet will do, they will always be unhappy and spamming the forums over the same things.
What is the counter against passive heal? Actively react to it?
Are you serious ?
Like someone said, poison. But the passive heal isn’t that high, you must be mad.
Look at Elems, they have lots of regen skills. Yet I don’t cry about it.
OK
Lets fix mesmers AI spam and burst (surviability and offense), those are broken.
Lets fix thiefes evades, stealth and burst (surviability and offense), those are broken.
Lets fix all AI Spam across all professions, those are broken.
Lets fix AoE Condition Spam, those are broken.
ANet if you fix the warrior (imo its fine as it is if those issues listed above remain in the game) please fix also all the above.
And yet another pathetic crying thread about how OP Beserker Stance is. These forums are full of people not willing to find ways to counter, that’s why whatever Anet will do, they will always be unhappy and spamming the forums over the same things.
First of all, don’t use off-hand axe until the buff it or something. Whirling axe is one of the worst skills we have atm, and is only half decent when stacking boons or conditions. 3 attacks with main-hand axe beats the damage of whirling axe, and you aren’t sitting there literally twirling on the spot for 4 seconds. Dual strike is OK, but you don’t really need the 8s fury if you’re running sig of rage.
I am assuming your standard combo is Imob – 100b.
In that case, you should probably be using offhand mace or shield to get that stun/knockdown as immobilize is very volatile, and in some cases, very hard to land.
Warhorn is always good for the blast finisher and cure conditions as well, but obviously, is more defensive.
Thing is, the immob on Flurry lasts enough for me to put a full 100b on someone (without the lame combo with Frenezy).
With the help of the sword in main hand and all the cripples + immob from leg specialist, people panic and use their skills to purge them. that’s when I use the combo.
But in this game nothing is guaranteed : any skill can miss or be dodged.
The knockdown from the offhand mace is interesting but not only it is slow : it lasts 2 seconds and have quite a long cd. Which won’t leave me enough time to put a full 100b or any other decent attack. Especially if I’m victim of kitting.
Hello everyone,
Since I came back to the game, I wanted to create another warrior char and level him to 80. As far as it goes I enjoy much more both PvE and sPvP with the warrior (I used to play Thief).
My weakness is that I enjoy playing dualwielding characters, especially with swords.
But as you know, offhand sword doesn’t bring much to the table imo.
I made a Sw/Ax – GS build which does work well in my opinion, but I feel weak when going with Sw/Ax in PvP if my target isn’t with less than 50% hp.
Here is the build :
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fIAQNAsXRjgOVvxOyQMRCCjifAkjixvEli5UnUBxA-TwAg0EJpSylkJJZS2kGksE5QyMjXGA
It’s fine in PvE, but in PvP I find myself often chasing my target to get some hits
( I have a Mesmer in mind, I defeated him twice but it was quite a fight because even with the leg-specialist trait he was often escaping from my immobilize skills with the classic : vanish -> clones)
Any advice about using a better offhand ? The whirlwind skill#5 is missing too much because I get kitted easily which is sad because it does decent damage.
I was thinking of a mace offhand but I feel like the skill#5 will often miss too. Plus I don’t want to take a shield since I prefer to be very offensive.
Despite spitting on the offhand sword like many, it’s not that bad when you look at it : 2sec block with a low cd, Impale which does 381 base damage and applies Torment (2,756 damage plus another 2,756 damage if moving but I don’t see these dot numbers popping on my screen for some reason, is it bugged?) and the Rip skill that does 1,460 base damage but isn’t easy to land (2sec cd if you miss though).

Hello,
I’m actually in Vizunah Square a famous french server.
However, I’m a bit tired of the community and I’d really like to speak english with other people. I was in a multinational europe server but I left to join some IRL friends who don’t even play anymore.
I see that you guys are from the US, maybe I’ll join that server. But first I’m really interested in joining your ranks. Even if there will be a time difference, it would be fun to play with americans.
I have a Thief lvl 80 and a Warrior lvl 52 that I’m leveling and who’s going to be my main (tired of spamming 1-2 skills over and over with the Thief).
Oh and I hate human females ( in game of course… :p )
(edited by Scar.1793)
First off, the devs do indeed read the forums, but they won’t listen to some random dude telling them what to do because it’s for the greater good (or your own pleasure ? hummm?)
Oh and you obviously play Necro, they are fine if you know what you’re doing.
I was trolled by a necro too, and as far as I know, necros have an easy access to Fear.
I could break the fear, but I was surprised that my character just fell out of the map ( it happened in like 1-2 secs).
I guess that’s because I came back to the game a few days ago but since the first time I played on this map I just hate it. It’s like a Super Mario fail. Ranged classes have it easy on this map imo.
I for one agree wholeheartedly with the OP. In fact, I think they need to look at strafing too. Too many times I aim a skill at someone only to have them sidestep it. Ridiculous IMO.
what are you talking about, you got autofacing in Guild Wars 2, which takes 0 skill.
How about an aimbot too?
It was about time, with all the baddies facerolling since the release.
I suppose they were assuming that the Thief would be down, because with the right weapons and traits, you can do very good AoE damage (not as cheat as 100b which will be nerfed very soon) and evade everything. Lots of dodges. BLINDS.
I use S/P-P/P and barely go down in dungeon, except when I take some random huge aoe damage coming from nowhere (thanks GW2 hitbox) or not paying attention.
I can use and spam blinds which help a lot against tough enemies. You can also buff your mates with Fury+Might (Steal trait) and I can use the Charr Battle Roar which gives again the same boons. So it’s really usefull both in offense & support.
With a Thief, it actually demands a lot from the player : focus, attention to what the ennemies are doing all the time, position.
It looks hard, but it’s a very interesting way to play. And not as dumb as a Mesmer poppin’ clones/phantasms and running around in circle.
Thieves SHOULD be very good in mobility, but in reality, Eles have it better than us.
But in the end, it comes down to the class you like to play, even if I was playing a warrior doing 50.000 damage aoe with 100b I would quit, simply because playing with a class that has not the playstyle you want will be boring after a short while.
It’s not all about numbers.
Well first, half the fight you go with Shortbow, which I assume is not a bad idea… on paper.
Fighting an average Mesmer is tough enough, you have to kill phantasms, and focus your damage on the Mesmer. Clones can be ignored, they’re a waste of time.
When I first look at your video, it looks like the Mesmer is chasing you all the time, even with swords. So I was wondering who was the Thief here. You should be the one to chase the Mesmer.
I’d go with dagger or sword to not let the Mesmer breath ONCE. You have to be permanently on his back, after some fights trust me, it’s easy to spot the real Mesmer. You just have to watch closely movements of your enemies for a second.
Also, you got the right Mesmer on target, spam or use once (depending if others use it too) CTRL + T. So you have targeted that bloody caster.
Bring some immobilize (venom/Infiltrator Strike) and some Daze to screw their rotation (if they even have one heh…) or simply disturb them.
And important thing : always kill the phantasms, if you let them live they’ll do huge damage to you.
For all these reasons it takes skill to kill even an average Mesmer because they have it easy with the clones/Phantasm and the confusion of the fight. It’s ok I guess, but it should be that powerful and easy imo.
I took a Mesmer to try some PvP and I barely read skills descriptions and even traits and I was doing good damage and facerolling people. Got kill because of course I didn’t really knew what I was doing. But no class should be that easymode, I can’t see the satisfaction of playing like this.
Pay attention to your traits like the one that increase damage with a pistol in your set by 10% and all the increase in damage you can get by speccing right. You’ll see that Pistol Whip deals a LOT of damage and it´s aoe ! And you got blackpowder for dungeons or tough situations.
Plus combine it with Assassin Reward, Signet of Malice ( healing skill) and you got a crazy health regen, more with haste ( even post-nerf), this passive heals and the evade are just awesome !! Give it a try
And they can be invisible while finishing someone, what other professions cant.
Elementalist with the lame Mist Form says hello
Sorry mate, but L2P.
it’s like APB : Reloaded from Gamerfirst, you buy Joker Boxes and have a tiny tiny chance to get a rare (and overpowered) weapon.
You also get powerful weapons. But at least it’s permanent.
Also, note that this game is mainly Pay 2 Win unlike Guild Wars 2 but still the system with the shop is quite similar.
No offense, but go back to WoW.
Guild Wars 1 & 2 are about teamplay and synergy between classes. Not some fancy arenas to boost your ego.
Plus making 1vs1/2vs2/3vs3 arenas will be seeing mainly elementalists D/D, Mesmers and Guardians.
Not my cup of tea friend.
Honestly I think this question makes non sense (in pve at least) the huge majority plays with Greatswords. That’s it.
I too posted for an offhand sword, I wanted dual wield so bad that I rerolled warrior (already knowing that dual swords is really useless both in PvE & PvP).
But in the end, I really prefer the gameplay of the thief. So I think I’ll go back to it.
And giving mesmers dual swords while thieves can’t (and they’re mainly melee fighters) I mean… what the heck is that lol !!
dude WvW isn’t pvp, it’s just bus vs bus. no offense
lol you guys would be better off playing Skyrim with mods haha
Mesmers have dual swords but imo it’s not a melee fighter, they just have Blurry Frenezy/Strike (don’t remember the name) which is a copy/paste from Pistol Whip of Thieves. And the auto-attack. I tried one once, not THAT fun because you mostly try to confuse people with the clones/phantasm.
I tried on warrior it’s quite fun though underpowered honestly, even spec condition damage it sucks, I tried to make swords do as much damage as possible but it kinda lacks something. But I’m glad Anet decided to buff these weapons (read it somewhere on the forums).
So now, because thieves can’t dual wield swords, I’m thinking on rerolling warrior.
Mesmer is different and imo easy mode (both pvp/pve).
Yes, it’s a bit too much lol, plus we already have a gap closer with mainhand sword.
Well at least a majority agree that Eles & Mesmers are over the top.
Just saw an Eles finish people with the Mist form, this is sooo lame.
Physically saying, swords are heavier than daggers, and since most people have a dominant side, generally the right one, going D/S would be an idiot decision, you wouldn’t be able to hold and use it well
But talking about other weapons, I’d like to see more weapons for thieves
A sword in off-hand in reality would be for defensive or counter reasons~ doesn’t really matter how heavy it is compared to the dagger. Plenty of games allow dagger/shield as well, and the shield is far heavier. Maybe it’d give us counter/block type skills (preferably ones you can channel while moving). Then there’s dual sword~ a luxury warrior gets instead of thief.
Would of been nice for a cool multistrike dual skill that doesn’t do crap dmg.
haha I bet you were thinking of Flanking Strike… almost the same damage as auto-attack but you get a tiny evade.

I understand your opinion, though I don’t agree.
Just look at Mesmers, they can use swords mainhand and offhand at the same time, and as far as I know Mesmers aren’t known for they physical performance in battle.
They can even go Scepter/Sword and even use Greatswords…
So I think you can’t apply the argument "they’re too heavy so you can’t use them " in Guild Wars 2. At least that’s the way I see it.
Will we ever see this ? I searched all the web but couldn’t find any answer from Anet, and no hints on this.
I also think, like many of us, that we should be able to use more weapons. But not only the Thief class, I’m also thinking of Guardians who lack ranged attacks (why not a spear Paragon-like?) and others too.
That would feel so much better with more diversity, just look at how you could build your skills in Guild Wars 1, without being so stuck by weapons being focused on bleeds or control.
Thanks for reading.
Thing is: Berzerker Thieves finally pay up a little in terms of survivability. And please don’t cry about the health pool. You have a medium health pool, but still medium armor.
I think the patch was not only warranted, but also necessary!
And caltrops from 15s down to 10s? Why on earth would you need them on the ground for more than 10s?You’ve been posting a lot of gloating posts since this update. Now you are also posting misinformation.
How about you stop it and realize the next class up for castration will be the mesmer.
And we ALL know just how ezmode mesmers really are.
Sorry, I somehow remembered medium health pool, my bad.
Yes, Mesmers have received various nerfs with almost every patch. But I adjusted to it.
Mesmer Ezmode? Right… cause we do all the burst damage…If they are going to nerf shatter builds, I’ll run a condition build. If that is nerfed, I’ll go for glamour. So what? If the class gets totally unplayable, I’ll play another class until they fix it. But don’t tell me that thieves are oh so totally unplayable now in PvE. Just adjust to a new build, or… L2P how many like to answer to people complaining about thieves being OP.
Mesmers have not had nearly the amount of nerfs that thieves have had.
Mesmers are also face roll easy…..more so than thieves.
So please leave thief boards.
I agree, I just tried a Mesmer in PvP, even if I wasn’t THAT good because I didn’t understood well the skills and even the mechanism of the class, kitten it was… I don’t know, I could almost just use all my skills and kill everything without too much troubles.
Stealths, stuns, daze, passive confusion with all the clones/phantasms which makes also PvE easy as pie. And so much more to the table.
No wonder why I see so many human females Mesmers with belly dancer’s clothes lol, it’s so lame and boring to see that.
Hey ! Have you heard of WoW?
QQ I hate this game because my class sucks.
Yea me too mate, but I don’t play engie.
I hope they add monk but with light armor this was one of my favorite professions in gw1. I don’t care about class balance i want diversity!
Monk… lol in GW1 it was all about the Monks (and Eles)
Monks could farm wayyyy easier than ANY class.
Monks were mandatory for ANYTHING.
F that, I’m glad they’re not in GW anymore, these bald monkeys. I used to kill them with my Sin, but they were really annoying.
We already have enough diversity, what’s truly needed IS NOT another class but classes being able to use NEW weapons.
Spear for Warriors/Guardians (Paragon style), sword offhand for Thieves, why not rifle for Rangers (oh come now they use Greatswords and you tell me they can’t bring a rifle? woot??)
imo they aren’t THAT great. I don’t understand the hype over it.
I was wondering, is S/S viable and useful in any game mode ? PvE or s/tPvP
Are you kidding ? There’s mostly updates for PvE, and that boring bus vs bus WvW.
In sPvP and tPvP we are still waiting.
You’re right, but they changed CCs so you can’t be stunlocked forever.
In Age of Conan Stealth was not around stun locking, and even stunned, you can’t be stunned again for like 30secs – 1min.
Even in WoW now, trying to full stunlock will be useless (it will last 4-5 sec max and it decreases as you try to stun more).
Here you CAN actually prevent the ennemy for attacking, daze, basilik… it’s quite easy. But they don’t last long so you have to rely on other things, which I think, makes the fights more enjoyable. But still, I hate the way stealth is in GW2.
Yea it was lame anyway lol, I hope will have a sword offhand with a decent dual skill.
S/D if much more fun too.
Back with the trailers, when I heard about the Stealth mechanic is was like “ewww”
Hell even Aion got it right, the stealth for classes like rogues/thieves/assassins are not to “avoid” damage (I put "" because you know even in stealth you get easily hit by random attacks, and stealth last so very few seconds) but for offense AND defense, let me explain :
In WoW, it is used both as offensive & defensive ability, sure it can be used without limits but once you’re out of combat, you’re out of stealth and you have to prepare the fight according to your opening. You have also vanish (which makes you restealth again). But that’s it. No Stealth spam, nothing.
You can also use it as a defensive ability just to hide from raids of players nearby, or waiting in a strategic spot in order to defend it and surprise the ennemy.
In Age of Conan, the stealth mechanism is similar both to WoW and GW2 : critical single attack in stealth and it has no limitation. But again, once in combat you can’t restealth until you’re out of it.
Sorry for bringing WoW & Age of Conan, but I think they did a good job on stealth mechanism.
I know there wasn’t any kind of stealth in GW1, but I think the reason was because Assassins got very good defensive abilites. Whereas in Guild Wars 2, Thieves are just… I don’t know, many things are lacking : interesting rotation, decent bursts, and more importantly : mobility and defense.
Stealth should be something that truly has a meaning and should be used cleverly
When I was playing PvP ( Months ago) Pistol Whip was cool, decent damage, honestly not too high not too low for a class that is squishy and should deal at least good damage with burst and constant attacks.
First they nerfed PW : if you check it right, it does the same or almost the same damage as your auto-attack. If you full crit with auto-attack you do much more damage then the actual “dual skill” supposed to help you to burst.
Now they nerfed haste by 50% ! 50 % !!! And give us 1 sec more. Honestly, I tried it ONCE, and I didn’t like it. It’s not balanced. 1 sec more traded with -50% is not right imo.
Why something specific to a profession should be a boon and quite easily removable ?
So every buff should be a boon ?
Bad idea if you ask me.
Stop. Nothing needs a re-work. Players need to simply learn how to play the game and stop whining about stealth.
It was a non-issue in the first place.
And please stop watching highlight reels of noob thieves killing upleveled people in wvw…many do this and come here complaining that “omg thief burst so OP” when they have no clue about the profession.
Dude, get out of your cave, many skills and mainly traits need some rework.
Especially Flanking Strike (dual skill of S/D), its damage is like pistol whip : almost the same as auto-attack. I mean wtf, now you burst with constant auto-attack? Thief got boring with many weapon sets.
It NEEDS a rework and fast. No wonder why there’s a lot of Warriors/Eles/Mesmers out there. I played Warrior, and just looked at other professions builds & traits, and you got so much more freedom in terms on how you make a build.
Yup since release it has been like that. I was also surprised to see that the bug was still here when I came back after like 4-5 months.
Fiery Dragon Sword does not appear in the PVP tab, for either me or my brother.

That would be insane, knowing it’s supposed to be a reward for Guild Wars 1 players, why only this weapon would be forbbiden in PvP? Plus, you can even get an Icy Dragon Sword in the game.
I’m sure many guys reported this issue, but I wonder why they didn’t fixed it with the first updates? I mean adding a weapon that is already in the game… It doesn’t seem to take much time! I hope they’re working on this little issue !
