If it is a point you control, unless its a 3+v1 you should stay and fight, and if you are a bunker you should fight vs 3, and make sure you die on the node. If you run then they no longer have to commit more than 1 person to the point and there’s a good chance you won’t escape death by running.

The time spent avoiding death + the period of time you are in the downstate on the point should result in more points than giving them the point even if it was certain you would get away every time if you ran.

OP’s idea is really really bad though and as pointed out goes completely against the spirit of competition that this game was advertised with. One of the main selling points of the games PvP system was the balanced playing field in which the cries about only winning b/c of gear would finally be silenced.

The addition of these would create groups of “haves” and “have-nots” which would ruin one of the few things this game did correctly with PvP.

Agreed, this, far more than any bugs or gear treadmills, would be the death of GW2. Not to be rude to the OP, but I understand this thread as more of a general dissatisfaction thread than a serious suggestion (correct me if I’m wrong).

Well the current state of the game is pretty similar to Terri Schiavo before the feeding tube was removed, not dead, yet not “truly” living.

My team decided today to take a hiatus from the game. Maybe in a couple months if/when a rating system comes out we will consider putting in the hours to compete at the upper echelons but currently attempting to play this game at a competitive level seems to be a bigger waste of time than nearly any other alternative use of one’s time.

I would rant about how flawed the QP and tournament system are but its been covered enough that I think everyone understands how bad it is outside of ArenaNet developers.

I’ve had fun playing against the competitive teams and I think competitive community overall is a pretty good one, it is a shame ArenaNet did not provide the necessary structure to nourish and grow the community. I wish the best for all those I have competed against and hopefully ArenaNet will take the necessary steps to allow this game to rise up from the ashes so that we can compete again in the future but I wonder if there will be much of a community left at that time.

If they created a 5th map that was just a giant circle with some pillars and made it only available in custom servers and allowed the owner of custom servers to make a deathmatch mode I think they would be able to make the arena group somewhat happy and pocket some cash. A simple arena design should be pretty cheap and easy to put out.

Some people might be mad they can’t get access to the deathmatch mode without paying but I feel like there would be enough semi-public servers that anyone would be able to play it for free if they put some effort in.

We absolutely have PvE in mind when balance changes are made. Our designers, while having certain projects they work on (PvP, WvW, dungeons, etc.), are invested in the overall feel of combat in the game. It is a delicate balance, no doubt, but one we take very seriously.

Good thing you came in here and cleared it up. Apparently the huge amount of PvE content released in comparison to PvP stuff wasn’t a big enough hint of where their focus was. Do you even read the patch notes? The vast majority of things are for PvE players.

So which one of those people in the meeting are the reason we had the tournament system implemented instead of the matchmaking system which was successfully used by so many other games?

Which of those people in the meetings was it who decided to hold off on fixes to things like the block bug, svanir rune and thief culling for a major patch instead of a hotfix?

Which of those people decided to make Paid tournaments the first monetization option rather than custom servers?

I know these questions will never be answered but if that designer ever stumbles upon this post, know that you are a major source of GW2 maladies and if your design team isn’t able to make a miracle happen to recover the community and begin a second expansion, it would be your poor decisions that ruined a game which has an amazing gameplay system to work with.

Two ideas I’ve seen tossed about on here that I want to repeat.

I like the idea of a 20 second timer that starts when the player is first downed but with a minimum (maybe like 7 seconds?)

I really think something like this is as ideal as it gets. It stops the “strategic dying” of the spawn wave system and provides a disincentive for letting someone bleed out as long as possible.

Because here’s what Arenanet does.

ArenaNet is the only chef in a world class restaurant. There’s a lot of people pulling them in every direction, but he can only focus on one thing at a time. Eventually everyone will have their food served, even if it does take a few hours. Or months.

Bad analogy is bad. It’s like going to a world class restaurant with an amazing reputation that has a new head chef and the new chef brings a new menu (which isn’t bad on its own) and while not just being different food, the quality is nowhere near as good.

I didn’t even play GW1 but I know it launched with a ladder. ArenaNet had the right menu originally and with a new chef bringing some new ideas the game could have been great. Except we all came looking for a steak dinner and instead got yesterday’s Ramen.

The design of this game is such that communication is one of the most important aspects to being successful.Enemies visible to your team do not show up on your map so everyone on the team has to be calling out numbers of enemies and movements that are spotted. Typing to your allies is not feasible in a WASD movement game, the only good option I have seen other than in-game voice chat (which has a host of issues of its own) is the VGS system used by smite in which you can use keyboard hotkeys to create both an auditory message and visual chat message of many common things that need to be communicated.

While I don’t think a system matching premades with pugs is a good one because of the unfair matchups, the value of communication and reliance on teammates in this game provides a much larger advantage to premades than other games.

Actually I recall that at one point they said that only 1 person was managing all the traits/skills and said that the last month or two before release they were going to put more resources into balancing etc. The good news is they doubled their manpower, the bad news is it is still only 2 people lol.

Retaliation, imo, should have been designed more as an active defense system rather than passive damage over time. Retaliation should stack in intensity and it should REALLY hurt if you are attacking someone with multiple stacks of retaliation, obviously the duration should be cut down to justify its increased potency. It’s duration should be similar to that of confusion.

Is it a logical business strategy to split the game into distinctly PvE and PvP and then ignore every word uttered by the PvP community until they all move on to other games?

It is less of a “logical business plan” and more of a self-fulfilling prophecy when you handle things in the way they have. They could have easily monetized the PvP base by having custom servers available at release for duels/scrims etc. Instead they had NOTHING useful or wanted by the PvP community in the gem store and their first attempt at monetizing their PvP base was the introduction of Paid Tournaments which I think has surpassed George Bush in the “miserable failure” google search results.

GW2 is a case study of how to destroy the goodwill of a community and demonstrates that despite having a good foundation of a game you can’t treat your community like kitten and let exploits/broken abilities run rampant for weeks without negative repercussions.

To be frank, whoever decided to go with a tournament system rather than matchmaking should be fired, whoever decided to implement paid tournaments before custom servers should be fired. Whoever decided to sit on necessary changes to fix broken items/abilities rather than hotfix them deserves to be fired. I know it is extremely unlikely that any of the necessary personnel changes will be made and it is just as unlikely that GW2 will become any sort of major PvP game with its current trajectory.

Some people will say things like “just give them more time..” etc, but there are many gamers here who have seen this sort of thing before. The writing is on the wall and the PvP aspect of this game is on life-support and the prognosis does not bode well for GW2’s future.

I kind of like the idea that that timer would begin ticking when you enter the downstate, if they get an immediate stomp off on you then you will take the full rez timer but if they bleed you out then they will not be getting an extra benefit.

I agree, this game has been a huge let down. This game had so much potential but the length of time in which they allowed broken things to run rampant really hurt the community. While I haven’t played a ton since the last patch, from what I have seen it has done nothing to change the meta. Sure bunkers can now be killed without rampant block bug and svanir rune abuse but they are still pretty dominant and many games have long periods where teams stream in because their bunkers can last long enough for their other bunker and teammates to arrive from spawn keeping points capped/neutralized. I really thought they were holding back in beta and they had a lot of stuff pretty much ready to go. I thought private servers and observer would have been in the first major patch after release with a rating system coming in the patch we just had. The fact that we do not have any one of these three things as this point is disturbing.

I feel like there is almost no chance of this game becoming an e-sport unless ArenaNet puts a bunch of money up for a tournament but that doesn’t seem likely when they have a grand total of 2 PvP devs. I also think that if significant progress isn’t made with both features and increasing the viability of different team compositions in high level play then even the competitive community may die in the near future.

Regarding elementalists, its more than “slightly”. Evasive arcana can’t blast finish at all anymore, so that wiped out any staff bunkers (and other staff builds). As for Mesmer, apparently their berserker phantasm now does less than half damage. And of course, we’ll be seeing far more bs thieves now…

Do you even play the game? How can you say staff bunkers are wiped out when they are still run by many teams.

Explain how the *bleep* we are to survive this?

@Shadowlancer, your original post had nothing to do with asking for help as an engineer as you didn’t even mention what class you were in the first post. It looked like pretty much every thief whine that has already been posted. However, I will try to give you some help.

Obviously the most effective counter is to be aware of your surroundings and try to act pre-emptively against a thief. Of course that isn’t always possible, so lets talk about once the thief already has a jump on you.

The engineer’s best tool against a thief is the smoke bomb in the bomb kit. After getting attack by a thief and using a stun break you should pretty much immediately use smoke bomb and then either concussion bomb or your heal (depends on how much damage the initial burst did). The smoke bomb should protect you from the final portion of his burst and you will be pretty injured but alive, the thief will probably be at around 75% life at this point from the confusion bomb and other random hits you might have gotten off.

The next moves depend on your weapon set. If you are using rifle, use overcharged shot to knockdown the thief, follow it up with the immobilize and then finish the thief with auto attacks/blunderbuss.

If you are using pistol/shield use #3 for confusion/blind, use #2 to get some poison up and then use shield 4/5 to keep yourself up as the conditions tick.

If they use lots of stealth using grenades and throwing them at your feet is effective as well.

Engineers have many tools to defeat thieves and they may even be one of the best equipped classes for killing thieves.

LoL @ QPs mean nothing but time played. Yeah, maybe that is the only thing separating some top teams with QPs and the system is unable to provide an accurate measure of which team is objectively the best. But regardless, the teams with QPs are the stronger teams playing.

As an engineer, I would not really classify our downstate as weak. Yes the #2 is weaker than some other classes, but our #3 is pretty strong, and the combo of #2 and #3 is stronger than most other classes abilities to stop stomps.

I really don’t get this post. Simply being a “premade” doesn’t instantly give a team skills they wouldn’t have otherwise. Obviously there is a lot of value to having communication but you still have to win fights. I’m sure there are many premades out there which are just a group of casual players who will lose against strong pugs. I don’t really get the point of calling out one particular group that you managed to get a win against.

While most people are pointing out the good things custom arenas will bring for the more hardcore in the pvp community I think there are benefits for everyone. I think finally having 5v5 hotjoin like PvP is a positive thing for casual PvPers. I am sure there will be several open servers run by game community sites or guilds where players will get a more serious experience than hotjoin but not have the wait times or pressure of a tournament.

I also think these servers will have the potential to build future teams. People that play on one custom server will get used to playing with one another and might consider playing in tournaments etc.

I do not think that custom servers are the answer to all of gw2s problems but I think it will help a lot in the short run.

When I made my first post I had only watched a little bit of your video and then made the post, I got around to watching the rest of the video and it looks like you said that exact same stuff in the video. Yeah so I definitely kittened up on the gems:tickets, idk where the hell I got 3.6, it is 12 as you stated. The reason I stated that arena net is taking in 160 tickets is because a total of 40 are returned to the teams losing in round 2. Not multiplying the gems by the number of players on the two winning teams was a large oversight as well. This is what I get for trying to make a post in between doing other things. Thanks for correcting the math.

Yeah, you can also poison the downed engi making the heal less effective or knock him out of the ring. Also, many engis will stand in their ring waiting to die, if you already have him on the ropes and you do not have any of the other standard counters then you can consider waiting out the ring before delivering your final burst.

Don’t get me wrong this ability can be very strong but I think given the wide availability of counters as well as the fairly long CD, this ability does need to be removed/altered.

Yes, I read your comments about why Prince lost and they were completely unrelated to what he was posting about as has been stated in this thread several times. I really try to be polite to other players in the competitive community on the forums however when you choose to be this obtuse then I can no longer hold back.

Here is an example of you failing completely in the application of your logic while comparing two abilities:

“You also are saying the lightning strike from air runes can’t be dodged. Well what about runes that apply passive offensive stats? The only way you can dodge that extra damage from the stats is by dodging the abilities themselves and you won’t always be able to do that.”

Do you really not get the difference between damage that can not be avoided other than not attacking a target at all and damage is not avoided because of being in a hectic team fight? Can you please elaborate on how you think this is a logical argument? Regardless of whether the other options provide greater damage output in a team fight, that damage can at least be avoided.

Your idea that a duel between two equally skilled players would be the end-all determination of balance is a laughable use of logic as well. Duels are largely contrived situations and there are a huge number of variables in each duel even when using the same two players in each duel that narrowing down on the specific effect of the runes would take a series of many duels, not a video of one duel. That is why modern game developers do not make wide balance changes merely on anecdotal evidence, they look at data and perform analysis to see what changes should be made.

Payne, thank you for demonstrating once again for the forum that you have reading comprehension issues. I was the only one who directly brought up reading comprehension issues, but then you somehow associated me with another person’s words by associating the reading comprehension argument with that person’s quote.

Prince never stated that the air rune was the “only” reason he lost and I said previously, this thread has NOTHING to do with the specific fight between you and Prince with the exception of the mechanics at play.

The problem with lightning strike compared to any of your other hard hitting abilities is there is no animation to watch for to prepare to dodge, if you attack the player with air runes the damage is going to come and it is going to happen pretty close to once every 10 seconds because of the high chance to proc. I think this is a problem given how much damage the lightning rune is able to put out depending on the build.

I’m not a person that complains about thief burst, or any burst in this game. I learn to deal with it, play better, etc. The problem with air runes is you can’t simply learn to outplay it, the damage is going to be coming in regardless. I wouldn’t even find air runes OP in their current state if it “infused” the wearers next attack or shot a projectile, something which one can look for and hope to avoid rather than unavoidable lightning bolt from the sky doing crazy damage.\

Pretty much the only thing you have been accurate on in this thread was Prince’s complaint about the stealth culling. This game for some reason has allowed people to remain stealthed while attacking and missing and so the beginning of the fight was working as intended for the most part. Take your minor win and cut your losses and vacate the thread and allow it to return to the original discussion topic.
