I’ve thought of this before too.
The only reason I can think that they don’t do this is because it would mess up the gold → gem & gem → gold market prices. It would probably skew the value of gems.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
As mucha as I hate saying this: warrior
They have the best combination of dungeon damage, team support, burst, and survivability.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Actually, Crysto is right. Asura racial is good for a stop-hitting-yourself build. If you’re going to roll this profession, asura would be beneficial.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
They’ll give whatever their ingredients for crafting are. Crafting daggers & swords only require ore, so that’s what they’ll return. Crafting axes & spears for instance, require wood & ore, so they’ll salvage to either.
Check the crafting recipes to see what gives what.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
That’s what I used to do Donari. I’ll have to give em another go I guess. Was getting mad that what once was netting me a fairly consistent flow of ecto turned into salvages that didn’t return enough to warrant the use of the salvage kit.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
I can back up locoman as a fellow Yak’s Bender, it always goes …wurm > troll > broodmother (> quaggan) on our server.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Afaik, the dungeon path is for lvl 80 only and it’s accessed thru the Twilight Arbor dungeon.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Since the account-wide Magic Find change, salvaging blues and greens has been a no-brainer. However, in the past I could salvage rares and I’d generally get an ecto and some mats. Now though, whenever I’ve salvaged a rare I get exactly 1 T5 mat and that is it.
Have the conditions regarding salvaging rares changed? This used to be how I got ectos.
If so, what do you do with them? I’ve been selling them on the TP for ~20s a piece.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Shield is also a melee weapon. In WvW I’ll take shield over rifle any day, thus rendering toolkit somewhat redundant.
I disagree about rendering TK redundant. Its only similarity is the block. But the KT also has cripple and a long range pull. If you’re planning on fighting in melee (as this thread suggests) don’t overlook the value of a pull & cripple. Not to mention, who doesn’t love a good PryBar?
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Does anyone else see the irony of spending thousands and thousands of gold to attain a stat that will net you a marginally better chance at getting items of higher value? It seems counter-productive. Definitely a long-term payout.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
I’m looking at that map, thinking back to GW, and thinking ahead with what GW2 could do with those areas and I’m getting excited. I can’t wait until they openmore of this map up!
Crystal Desert is probably the most popular first choice. I’d love to see some different kinds of enemies there, something harkening back to our GW ascension, and of course Glint story stuff.
Charr Homeland could hold a lot of good potential story stuff that touches on the past. And Kralkatorrik is up there too. Well, he was anyway.
Far Shivers because the norn are a fun race to be around. And Jormag.
The Maguuma Wastes could be pretty epic looking. When I first logged into GW2’s beta and walked into Caledon I was blown away with how gorgeous it looks. I’m thinking they can do Maguuma right.
I think they could bring back the Mursaat in the Maguuma Wastes too <evil grin>
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
So with dagger having better base dps than sword, does that mean that while leveling dagger is the optimal mh weapon since you’ve got negligible stats for quite a while?
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Actually, I don’t think they’re profession specific. I accidently bought an extra once and just kept in for another toon, which wasn’t the same profession.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Also, gather everything. Make sure you’ve always got a mining pick, harvesting sickle, and axe. You’ll see the icons on your mini-map for these things. Gathering gives XP, contributes to your daily (more XP), and can be sold for some decent coin on the Trading Post (TP). If you don’t care about money, you can level a craft, which also gives XP, but I don’t recommend that until you’ve experienced the game a bit more. You’ll need the coin you’ve got at your level.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
For lore: Norn
For armor: Human
For animations: Asura
You didn’t have Sylvari as an option, but I gotta say they’re the better combination of lore & armor.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
I get bleed on crit. And it works great on weapons. But afaik traps don’t crit, yet all the trap traits are in the crit line.
Imo, Skirmishing is one of the better ranger trait lines, having a lot of nice stuff you just can’t take if you want to strengthen you traps. Then we’ve got Martial Mastery in the WS line, a trait boosting primarily power weps in a condition line. It’s a toughness/malice line and its traits are 90% defensive. It’s confused.
Just an inexperienced ranger’s opinion, but it’s one reason why I don’t play ranger often. It just doesn’t gel.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Mu biggest problem is that they all seem to be in the wrong trait lines. Ok, not all. But for instance, if I wanna make a trap ranger I’m apparently speccing for crit?
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Everyone’s already touched on the FT/EG issue.
As for race, go with whichever you find more visibly appealing. I’d recommend asura simply because you don’t have one and they look great as engis (mine does). Don’t worry about group diversity because you won’t always play with that specific group.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
As an aside, Stealing originally acted as a bundle back in alpha (and maybe beta, don’t remember). So the 2nd half of that trait is a leftover from days gone by and was never adjusted when Steal was changed.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
<snip>
This isn’t about GW being better or worse than GW2 and that everything from GW needs to be in this game. It’s just a list of things from GW that were right on and didn’t need to be changed or removed. You listed some yourself. Don’t get all noble on the community after you contribute to the thread. There are definitely things in GW2 that they did better than GW did. I played the crap outta GW for years…don’t need to go back. But it’d be nice to think that the mods read these forums and will see what exactly they got right and what they got wrong in the eyes of its players.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
- Saved Build Templates
- Elites that don’t get forgotten on my bar
- Open, sprawling dungeons like FoW
- More complex dungeon fights. Right now, everything seems to be WoW-inspired as opposed to GW-inspired.
- Max stats available to all. Skins hard to get.
- Skill capping to a lesser degree. I like not having to purchase my skills, but capping elites was fun.
- More epic storyline
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
It really does Diak.
But it makes sense, considering the other sword skills are used as utility (evade, cond cleanse, boon removal, & movement). It needs a higher sustained dps with its autoattack.
Dagger on the other hand, has other skills to add to its autoattack damage, in the form of heartseeker and backstab and applied conditions.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
As the title says, I can’t find any decent combination of armor for my thief. I’m contemplating Magitech at this point because everything else looks lame. I’m not a cowboy, I’m not a ninja.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Direct damage has dodges, blocks, & blind to mitigate damage, but require smart use and anticipation. You gotta see it coming. But those things also work against condition skills, and on top of that conditions can be nullified with cleanse. You’ve got 1 more tool against conditions than you do against direct damage.
I think you forgot toughness.
They should half condition damage and conitions duration so to make the stat “condition duration” mandatory in a condition build.
And add another stat “condition critical” to make conditions deal a good dmg…
You’re right. Toughness is yet another way to mitigate direct damage
I don’t think condition duration could be a viable stat, because in PvP you’d never get enough to matter since gear is statless. In WvW conditions with +250% duration would be cleansed long before they’d fall off, making stacking that pointless. And the problems with conditions in PvE have been covered enough to know that adding +condition duration stats would make it even more broken.
However, I will concede to condition crit. Reducing condition damage on the whole and adding a cond crit % stat would broaden the condition stat necessities. However, that would open up a new mechanic. As it is, many professions can benefit from direct damage crits. Would condition crits be lumped into that category (OP)? More than likely you’d have to add new traits and sigils that benefit from condition crit procs. Otherwise, there’d be no need for them. It would just be needlessly making the combat mechanics more complex.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Tool Kit offers great defense with a cripple (#2), confusion (#3), and a block (#4). It’s our only true melee option. But that doesn’t mean things that have range can’t or shouldn’t be used at melee range.
Bombs are pretty much melee, and grenades are used even more effectively at close range. Both offer a combination of chilled, cripple, immob, blind, confusion, and stealth (smoke+blast). So quite a lot of defense at melee range there.
As others have stated, our rifle’s skills have such a varying degree of range that you’re often best at melee range. Double jump shot on top of your enemy and then hit em with a blunderbuss and they are hurting. Preface that with a bomb/grenade combo field and you’ve got stealth or weakness or fire armor; all good at close range.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Went with female sylvari for my ranger and I’m happy with the choice. Looks great in medium armor, way better than norn, and their cultural is miles better than norn. Fern hound from the start is quite useful. Sylvari racials are more helpful too imo.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
How would this be OP? One word: Initiative.
Everyone is forced to use weapons that match their build in both sets because the 2-5 skills have cooldowns that would simply put you at a disadvantage to wait for. Classes swap weapons to gain the ability to keep using ‘power’ skills. Thieves have the advantage of taking one or two weapons in a set as complete utiilty since, assuming they have the initiative, any weapon skill can be used at any time. And assuming they have enough initiative, any thief weapon skill can be used more than once (with the exception of stealth skills for the obvious reason…but still not cooldown related).
IMO, the thief should have been the only class who could not swap weapons because of how initiative works. He should have had a skill in place of ‘swap’ that allowed him to regain some initiative on a longer cooldown.
Note bolded text above. This is exactly why fast weapon swapping works better for thief than any other class. None of our weapon skills have cooldowns, but are instead limited by our initiative pool. Which means that whether we have 5 weapons skills or 10 (or 50 or 100) we still can only use them as often as we have the initiative to pay for them. Blow all your initiative on 1 weapon set, swap, and you’ve got nothing for the other set. Have to plan accordingly.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
I don’t think
Warrior is a soldier class. He trained how use weapons, thief don’t
Trick and Improvisation =/= Study and Preparation.
- Here in Brasil, a bandit just aim his rifle against a police and shoots until bullets ends. He shoots randomly hoping hit, while the police needs few shoots to hit
While the police just swap to pistol without leave the rifle behind (hold with sling), a bandit drops his rifle because lacks disciplineHe just think in escape alive.
Did you just compare the thief class to simple criminals and street thugs? Cuz that’s just an awful comparrison.
I’m thinking thieves are more like ninjas. Silent, stealthy warriors who train all their lives and hone their body into a weapon. A true student of the mind and body. Not a meer petty street criminal, but an assassin a precision instrument. To think that they couldn’t utilize their speed and dexterity to swap weapons quickly is ridiculous.
Warriors are brutish, hard hitting, in-your-face fighters who don’t flinch. They can pick up any weapon and use it due to their innate fighting ablity and strength. Where knowledge may be lacking, sheer will overcomes.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
it’s the whole hybrid concept that is misplaced…
Please explain that one. Are you saying you shouldn’t be able to build hybrid in this game? DD or Conditions or nuthin’?
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
it is just OP and conditions should be changed in the way they need ad least another stat but condition damage to be effective.
Direct damage has dodges, blocks, & blind to mitigate damage, but require smart use and anticipation. You gotta see it coming. But those things also work against condition skills, and on top of that conditions can be nullified with cleanse. You’ve got 1 more tool against conditions than you do against direct damage.
Condition Duration should just be a separate stat just like Crit-Damage.
Condition duration is a separate stat. Do you mean it should be more available on gear in addition to Givers weapons? I think that players are traiting and gearing quite well for +100% condition duration already without that stat on gear. To be able to have more would just be wasted.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Hey Seras,
I am not a longbow expert but do you have some ideas of your own for Longbows or know anyone that does? I actually want to see what ideas are out there.
Hmm…..
1 autoattack Fire 2 arrows in quick succession (pew-pew. pew-pew. pew-pew.) 1200 range, 20% projectile finisher.
2 Contempt Fire an arrow that bounces once to a nearby ally, dealing more damage if the target has a boon and bestowing swiftness (2s) on the ally. 20% projectile finisher, 1200 range.
3 Crystal Arrow Fire a crystallized arrow that crashes for aoe damage. Ground targeted, lightening field, 900 range.
4 Focused Aim Draw the bowstring back and fire an arrow that deals more damage the longer its drawn. Applies weakness (6s) if fired <400 range. Charge-up shot, 100% projectile finisher, 1200 range.
5 Fight or Flight Fire an arrow that, if it hits, gives you stealth (3s), vigor (5s), and swiftness (8s). 600 range.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Carrot. Stick.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
@ GGSBlunaspike: does the mask remove hair or is your character bald? It wouldn’t be the first time a head armor piece removed hair/facial hair.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
I only delete an alt if it isn’t getting played at all and I don’t have any more character slots and want to roll a new alt. Or if I just want to redesign/race change that profession, which only ever happens <20.
I’ve had alts standing around on my login screen for months without being touched. My ranger and necro, for instance, were later picked back up and leveled to 80 months after I initially abandoned them. Glad I didn’t have to restart completely.
My guardian is languishing in isolation at 45, but he’s just an extra set of bags for storage. Nothing wrong with extra storage.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
…..Fml, I have no goals left.
I guess I’ll level a pally in WoW until the next living story? That’s my goal I suppose.
Out of curiosity, how is that better than leveling an alt on GW2?
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Ghillie Suit is the only one I have an issue with. We have so much access to stealth, this skill seems like an expensive version of stealth that drains your initiative and requires you to stand still and do nothing. I don’t understand its purpose. Does it regen hp? Cleanse conditions? Anything beneficial?
Other than that, it looks fun. Though I will say that one reason I like thief is because it feels very movement heavy and the rifle as you laid it out seems to benefit from standing at range and just plinking away. I like rifles though so I’m not opposed to this weapon.
Longbow does sound more appropriate for a stealthy class to have for a ranged option. Just my opinion.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
1)-S/D Shbow – I really need to poison this warrior, but Shbow doesn’t do enough damage to overpower HS + AH – Now I can switch to Shbow for a mere 5s to get some poison/weakness on my target, then switch back to a set that does damage to maintain pressure.
2) -S/X D/X – I’m in stealth and I want to deal some burst, but dagger is less then optimal for the fight after I get out of stealth – 4 less seconds I’m stuck in a suboptimal weaponset.
3) -P/P whatever melee set – P/P until my opponent closes the gap, switch to melee for minor burst/whatever, open a gap and switch back to P/P
I could keep going, but you get the idea.
Great examples. #2 would alleviate something that frustrates me in PvE. I’m using S/X and when I stealth I can’t spike like I cold with another set, but don’t want to swap and get stuck without my sword.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Trait for reduced Deception cooldowns. Then slot 3 stealthing Deception utilities. Spam stealth and Backstab. That’s about as direct damage as you can get and the trait is available at lvl 20.
My porcine pets were always my favs when I played ranger. I loved the dug up items but thought the utilization was clunky. Thief gets that but better implemented with Steal. I’m traiting into that so that I can steal on a 19sec CD and get stealth, regen, daze enemy, boon steal, might, vigor, condition cleanse and/or initiative every time I use it. Sounds like too much fun not to try. Something like this maybe.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
And it might open up more weapon set combos, as opposed to the x/x + SB that nearly everyone runs.
Sooo… following your logic, people use SB on thief because of the weapon swap cooldown? Does not compute.
No, people use the SB because of its great utility and synergy with all build types. However, if you had the ability to weapon swap more frequently (and especially with the upcoming additions to available weapons), there could be greater potential for other weapon set combinations that gel. I’ve heard arguments about how skill x doesn’t fit in that set and it’d be better on weapon y. Or that I wish skill z were on a weapon q instead.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
…. unlimited retraits would be horrible.
Why? The game has enough gold sinks. I don’t think being able to make build adjustments and experiment freely is ever a bad thing. It’s one of the things I loved so much about GW.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Yes, the books were always an option but cost prohibitive. I had hoped this new item would come in the form of those books, sold by a vendor for silvers, maybe at 2x the cost of a reset (~7s).
As for costs, anyone know what the approximate cost would be for gold → 70 gems? (I’m at work atm)
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
(edited by Seras.5702)
•The Instant Trait Reset item is now available in the Gem Store in the Consumable category for 70 gems each or 5 for 300 gems. Players can use this item anytime they are not in combat to instantly have all their trait points reset. This item is not usable in structured PvP.
We’ve been asking for it. It is here. Shame it’s a gem store item. Cheap enough to have a few but I don’t see people making a habit of them.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
I think the point is that instead of reskins with a glow, to actually design completely new weapons.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Didn’t Anet recently apologize for making a drastic change/removal of something with little/no warning? And didn’t they just say that in the future they will endeavor to not repeat their mistake again?
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
I like it, and agree that the shared initiative would prevent any OPness.
And it might open up more weapon set combos, as opposed to the x/x + SB that nearly everyone runs. If you knew you could reliably combo one set into a couple skills in another set, and then back again, it could broaden the class.
Also, with new weapons and skills coming, this could have some amazing potential.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
I’m leveling with condition-based DB spam and it’s great for taking out small groups. Flashing around the group stacking bleeds is noob-easy with DB.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Yea I’m a little bummed only cuz I never got around to running it. Totally my fault; I’ve been playing the game for a year. But I didn’t think they’d remove a dungeon path with almost no notice.
