Just remember that 600% MF means that instead of a 1/100 chance of getting an item from a drop, you’ll have a 6/100 7/100 shot. A considerable percentage more, but still not amazing odds. And that’s for a 1/100 drop chance. I’m betting most of the good items have a base drop rate closer to 1/1000.

At a cursory glance, I like the ideas. Obviously, they’ll need to be evaluated to make sure they don’t “break” the economy, but I’m all for more usefulness for currencies/items.

They can add armor set pieces that only drop from dungeons. For example, run CM for the tokens for the vendor gear, or get a drop of a new skin that’s only available as a drop in there. And since CM is geared to players around 35ish (?) you’ll have access at earlier levels.

Gem store armors have been quite nice but I don’t like the idea of having to buy the good looking stuff from a store as opposed to getting it by playing the game. I get that Anet wants to make money, and that’s fine (I’ve even bought a Megitech set myself). But they’ve literally introduced zero new armor sets that are accessible in-game by way of playing the game. It’s either gem store or RNG ticket/boxes.

I’ve been doing exactly this whilst leveling my thief. In open world, I’m spreading aoe bleeds and cripples while stealthing, dodging, and evading attacks. It’s so much fun to kite away watching 4 enemies limp toward me as dot numbers bounce around my screen.

First and most important things I bought were extra character slots (I have 8 now) and extra bank tabs.

If you’re new and really hurting for gold, I guess you can exchange gems → gold but I hear the exchange rate isn’t that great. Hold onto em for when something really shiny comes along that you must have.

In addition to the 3 professions you listed, check out Engineer. They have kits, which act as weapon sets, and have no swap cooldowns. This offers you a lot of skills to play with. Engi have a dynamic playstyle and quite a lot of movement abilities.

Also, go to Lion’s Arch (via the asura gate in your home city) and ask if any guilds that do a lot of PvE are recruiting. LA is the major hub that everyone hangs out in so you’ll have better chances there.

^ this. They’re both easy to play and have a great combination of damage and survivability and support. You don’t have to be as situationally aware to play them as you do, say, a thief or ele.

Rare gear is available on the TP for about 2-3g for a full set. And the stats aren’t that much worse than exotic. So if you want some gear fast, get rare armor now, then work toward your exotics.

I’d just like to be able to inspect for skin. No stats. Most times I don’t have a problem whispering someone about their armor. But for those occassions when I get cricket chirps, it’d be nice.

It could just be a matter of perception. If you rolled a huge norn or charr, you might feel like you’re running slow. Try an asura and see if that feels better.

While I agree with the OP, that ultimately it’s up to a player’s personal preference and what they find fun, sometimes the forums are needed to help narrow things down. I’ve seen many threads from people with a couple 80s, they know what they like and dislike from playing those, and ask the forums to narrow down their options based on that info. It’s handy. Playing each class to 30 takes a fair amount of time, especially if you’re really studying the ins-and-outs of them and testing various options.

Another piece of advice is to take your brand new character to the Heart of the Mists, where you’ll upleveled to 80 while there, and test out all the skills and traits you’ll eventually get. This might help make your decision. It’s also a good way to decide if the race you chose has animations you like.

All in all though, the OP said it best: Your going to have to find it yourself, no matter what anyone says, no one can play that class for you. Enjoy it, Learn it, Master it.

Actually, I think you’ll find rangers and necros do much better in PvP than in dungeons or WvW.

In open world PvE though, rangers are incredibly easy and the pets are quite helpful. My suggestion is to not get lazy with your pets. Learn to swap them and reposition them now so you’ll have developed the habit when you start to dungeon.

Dual-classes helped greatly. But keep in mind, each individual class had a ton of skills in their library all by themselves. Often times only 1 or 2 key 2nd profession skills were equipped on the bar. Our GW2 single-profession skill library is considerably smaller than in GW. If Anet follows through with their announcement to add all weapons and more utilities to every class, then we’ll start to see a lot greater build diversity. The more choice, the more options, the more we’ll be able to tinker. Also, I think Anet recognizes that they have a number of rubbish traits to rework/remove/replace. <fingers crossed>

Asura animations are great. Roll an asura warrior, take him to The Mists, equip a greatsword, press key for 100b…and marvel at the yoda-esque leaping that ensues. Now just swap thru weapons and enjoy the melee animations of a tiny character with norn-dagger sized weapons whooping golem booty.

It’s one of the reasons that my only norn is not max size. I set him at 50% max height and I’m pretty happy with the movement animation. Which says a lot considering my main in a perma-swiftness asura.

Critting means dealing a percentage more than your normal damage. But if your power is so low that your normal hit is weak, what’s the point in critting? And, if you have high crit chance without high crit dmg, what’s the point?

Yea kill yellow stuff that rarely get killed. The longer something has been alive, the more XP it gives. Yellow targets (like Moas) often get ignored so they’ll often net nice XP.

As a new player, this is my advice:

Gather everything you see. The gathering tools (sickle, pick, axe) are very inexpensive. Purchased from merchants. The gathered items can be sold on the Trading Post (TP). You can then buy armor from the TP as you level. I wouldn’t recommend more than every 5-10 levels (depending on your abilities). You’ll level quickly so spending money too often on gear will be a waste.

After you complete a heart & it fills in yellow, that person becomes a vendor. They may have some items you’re interested in exhange for karma. At low levels, the karma cost is pretty low but at higher levels I’d save your karma for better stuff down the road.

The personal story (that which is indicated by the green arrow/star on your map & appears on the top-right of your screen) offers good XP and generally a good item. If you do those at your level you’ll probably get a good piece of gear you’ll equip immediately.

As an aside, you did choose on of the harder professions to play for a newbie. Playing a warrior or ranger, for instance, you might not be having the same troubles. But if you enjoy it, DO NOT change professions. This game is all about fun.

If you don’t mind transmuting rare skins → exotic stats:

Check out the vendor Trokk in Fort Marriner, LA. He has Lionguard skins (rare) for karma.
And there’s a vendor in Ebonhawk that has Ebon weapons for karma I think too. Those look great.
Don’t forget about the Priory, Vigil, & Whispers weapons (also rare).
And of course the cultural weapons.

If you’re short on cash but long on karma, these could be good potions.

It all depends on your point of view.

For many people, each character is a unique individual, a new story, that you are creating from scratch. From this point of view, soul bound makes sense but daily’s do not.

For other people, there is one player (me) playing on the account, whether they chose to play a warrior or an elementalist on any given day is irrelevant. From my point of view, I shouldn’t have to have less just because I play 5 characters instead of 1.

Edit: Also, I never asked for “free stuff” I asked for my alts to be able all share the same set of gear. I don’t want two Amulets, I want 1 that I can take off my warrior and put on my mesmer.

I’ll agree with the different points of view. I didn’t look at fractals from that angle. I concede to your point.

I wasn’t pointing the “want free stuff” at anyone in particular. It’s just a general sentiment that I feel often comes from this topic. But being able to swap your amulet (and presumably all ascended gear eventually?) freely amongst your characters is, in essence, free stuff. It’s no different than getting a free amulet for your alt. It means you can earn gear for a character and then not have to work anymore for any other character. Got zerk gear on your mesmer, guardian, and thief? Awesome, you can now have a fully geared necro, ele, warrior, engi, and ranger for the cost of the 5 mins it takes to deequip, put in the bank, and reequip on your alt. All for zero effort. And it removes some importance from spending currency wisely.

I like free stuff. Who doesn’t? But I don’t want to see the the importance of earning gear disappear. Anet needs to find a way for players to earn top-tier gear without a grind, and then only require that grind for rarer skins. It’s what they promised (grind-free play) and it’s the answer to this account-bound for all issue.

I will point out though that rare gear is incredibly easy to get for any alt. And exotic isn’t that hard either. It’s completely plausible to have the currency for a full set by the time 80 rolls around. And the stat gap between the tiers isn’t large enough (yet) for it to make much difference.

Since when does the term “alt-friendly” = all my alts automatically get the stuff I earned on another character? The logic applied to many of these arguments is ridiculous. Currencies are shared now so all your karma earned by your main can now be used to on your alt. Dungeon tokens are account bound. Titles are account bound. AP is account bound.

But just because I spend countless hours and gold earning something on my main, doesn’t mean my alts (of which I have 7) should automatically get free stuff.

There are a couple things that would be better if it were account wide. But things like fractal ranks…I think the idea is that Anet doesn’t want you bringing a fresh alt in rares with 0AR and little dungeon experience into a lvl 38 fractal, just cuz your warrior is geared hardcore.

There are a lot of neat little items you can buy from karma vendors throughout the world, but using them is annoying wihtout a consumable bar. This would be handy. And the ability to not display it too, in case we don’t need the clutter.

Agreed. And somewhere other than in the 2nd zone you get to. It’d be nice to have those things in say, Mt Maelstrom or Fireheart Rise or Iron Marches; places far away from major cities.

Also, Rata Sum is the best place for access to crafting stations, the TP and the bank. They’re the closest together and require no WPing. Better than LA.

We don’t need mounts. Why do people keep asking for them? Honestly, with WPs and asura gates and most professions having speed boosts, mounts would just be a waste. Is it just because WoW had them? Cuz you can always go play WoW. I hear they have Po in it now.

Also, one of the big important aspects of GW2 is its collection of DEs. If everyone is whipping around Tyria at +60% speed then nobody will even think about stopping for DEs or to help someone who’s fighting a group of enemies. It will reduce player-player cooperative play.

We don’t need a comparative dps counter. And we’re all responsible for our own healing + some support, but since Zerk is king, the numbers will be viewed as the whoever gets healed the most is the worst player or does the most healing isn’t doing enough dps, etc.

And there’s a clock on your mini-map. If you can’t glance at it when you start and then when you finish that’s your shortcoming. The tool is there for you.

Not trying to sound mean but I’m sick of all the cries for dps meters in dungeons and speed-clear timers. I thought this game was designed for people of all play styles to compete evenly. Maybe I’m wrong, but having played WoW, I feel that dps meters will eventually lead to everyone being “forced” into a specific build and stats and profession for max dps and then all the variety and fun of the game disappears. That’s what I loved about GW, was that people could experiment with builds. I don’t want a min-max WoW repeat.

Steal was originally intended to act as a bundle. It changed. So this trait needs to be changed to still affect Steal in its current state. Something like increases the duration of your stolen skills by 20%.

As for the RNG recharge…it’s the only RNG we have. If this were an engi trait it’d make sense, but not thief. Maybe have it reduce the CD on all utilities that are currently on CD by 10% upon a successful Steal.

If you must stick with only 1 character, then respec your warrior. They have plenty of mobility, group support, & zerg-ability.

Otherwise, rotate through your characters as the need arises. Enjoy them all.

Unfortunately, falling damage usually does not damage your gear. If you fall while in combat it does but just leaping off a cliff cost you the way point charge but no repairs.

Really? Huh….didn’t know that. Ok then, just take your new level 2 alt to Lions Arch via the gates and walk outside. You’ll be easily 1-shotted and the WP is right there.

If you dislike the fragility of the Ele when missing a single skill, then you may want to avoid Thief. While not as squishy, it does rely on evasion. Imo though, it’s got evasion by the truck-full. So you get used to throwing out blinds and evades and you’re golden. Thieves also have a nice repertoire of utilities that make gameplay even more fun.

Engineer is wonderful. I can understand your skepticism at low levels because they require traits to really shine. While Thieves can burn down foes fast even at level 10, Engis require traits to push their weapons/kits into that level. So don’t lose hope. By 60-80 you’ll be able to fill any role in the game.

Ranger is the easiest to play, no doubt. It’s also the most boring imo. Your pet will either be a huge weapon (PvP, open world PvE) or a giant hinderance (dungeons, WvW zergs). But that’s a subject for debate. As to your sword rooting you, don’t forge that it has evades built into all of its attacks and that it keeps you kitten near perma-locked onto your target. You won’t have to burn endurance dodges as often by using #2 & #3 strategically. And most forum-goers agree that melee Ranger is stronger than bows.

If you still have problems with the mail hint, delete all of your mail, then start anew. I’ve heard this helps.

As for forcing broken gear, strip down to a single piece of cheap gear that you’ll just salvage when you’re done (to save on repair costs). Then throw yourself from a cliff. Preferably one near a WP. Repeat until thoroughly trashed.

+1 OP. I have this problem with my thief and using SB or Shadowstep to escape. You just can’t be quick about it. And it has nothing to do with skill imo, it has to do with being lucky enough to move your mouse to max range on your first try.

The most common uses of fields that I’ve seen are:

- blasting in fire fields to stack aoe might
- blasting in water fields to aoe heal
- blasting in smoke fields for aoe stealth (WvW)
- whirling in light fields for aoe cleanse

They tend to be pretty obvious in dungeons. Someone drops a healing spring or napalm and you should blast em if you got em for party support. Sometimes you will pre-stack might or stealth before encounters. In tPvP (which I have zero experience in) I’m sure there are some combo strategies that are planned & used.

In WvW zergs and world bosses, there’s just too much of a disorganized scrum for anyone to even see what’s going on.

Fields act differently depending on the finisher. Poison fields are great, but aren’t that great with projectile finishers. Use your SB #2 blast finisher on them and you’ll apply aoe weakness (and bleed). Which is a really good set-up if you’re planning on diving into the middle of the fray. Keeps you from getting whalloped on.

Also, I think Anet has tried to limit the combos each profession is able to pull of solo. On your own, thieves only have smoke, poison, and dark fields. Tons of finishers. But join an engi or ele who’s laying down fire fields and you can spam blast finishers to build huge aoe might. Or blast a ranger’s spring for repeated aoe heals. Can you imagine how OP thief would be if we had access to fire or water fields like they do?

Combos are designed to strengthen the combined might of a group. And while many people just drop whatever fields they have in zergs on CD, good group combo utilization in dungeons or small-scale WvW can seriously turn the tide. A strategic use of fields to create party-wide stealth, or stacking might, or retaliation is under-utlized and under-valued. Playing smart pays off. Unfortunately, not everyone does.

This just seems like an obvious filter option and for the life of me I can’t figure out why it wasn’t in there from the start. I’ve never seen a trading post/auction hall/etc that didn’t have it.

I agree. As it is, we have the little red bars under each skill to let us know if we’re in range. Which would be enough if there weren’t skills that varied depending on range. What we need is a simple vision cue to illustrate at which range level we’re at for those range-dependent skills.

My idea:

On skills like Ranger longbow auto with 3 levels of range, change the red bar range indicator to appear in 3 segments. If all 3 appear, you’re out of range (as usual). If 2/3 appear, you’re at the first level of acceptible range. If 1/3 appear, you’re at the 2nd level of acceptible range. If no bar appears, you’re at the innermost range of the skill. So a longbow ranger would strive to keep 2/3 bars up, since max damage is attained at the farthest range of the skill.

Engi blunderbuss, which has 2 levels of range, would have a bar with 2 segments. Since that skill deals more damage the closer you are, they’d strive to have no bars, since that would indicate the innermost range.

I hope that made sense.

Maybe just have dyes of a certain rarity be account bound. Then you can still collect the lesser ones for each character, but the dyes like Abyss & Celestial would be account bound. It would make the cost of them much more reasonable.

Seriously, it’s what I do for all new 80s. You can buy a full set of rare quality armor of any stat you like for about 2g from the TP. The stat difference isn’t that much compared to exotics and you’ll be more than viable in any dungeon while amassing tokens or hoping for drops.

It’s also a good way to test new builds that require different stats. For instance, I bought a full Dire set and a full Valk/Zerk set for my necro when I hit 80 in rares to test if I wanted to play conditions or power. Cost me maybe 3-4g for both sets.
