We need more SPEED!

As much as I like speed, I’d rather Rangers had more abilities to limit the mobility of other players. Basically, traps/spirits that are strong enough to make an enemy think twice before shadow-stepping into a Ranger.

Moving "Read the Wind" to Skirmishing?

I’d say combine Eagle Eye and Read The Wind into a single trait. From what others are saying on this forum, there isn’t any reason why you would take one and not the other.

Pets should follow more closely

in Ranger

Seth.1308

Pet’s don’t attract aggro, unless the master has already initiated combat.

If a large group of mobs is standing around, a ranger can actually single pull them by sending the pet in (preferably not one with AOE… lol), tagging the mob with the pet, and then recalling it.

It’s very common for Ranger pets to be blamed for attracting boss aggro on dungeon runs, but it isn’t actually possible. As long as you are out of combat & out of range, the pet can’t get aggro unless it directly attacks it.

Best PVE ranger maximum dps build?

in Ranger

Seth.1308

I run a similar build (LB/GS) give or take a trait point, and have a hard time believing it’s a max single-target DPS build. Burst damage… maybe… but DPS? Sword has GS beat in that respect by a large margin. Even burst, it’s arguable that you could outshine GS with Sword/Axe.

GS is amazing in it’s element, but it’s not a DPS weapon.

Rapid Fire theory

Seth.1308

What I’d like to see is projectile combos become meaningful in the game, and skills that generate a large number of projectiles be meaningful in that respect.

1) Drop the 20% combo RNG. Projectile combos suck, so why restrict them?
2) Add an AOE condition component to fire/ice/poison projectile combos.
3) Add an AOE direct damage component to fire/ice/poison projectile combos.
4) Muddy Terrain is now a smoke field.

Do the double sigils on longbow change anything?

Running Fire/Air, Rapid fire will have a much higher probability of double-proc compared to long range shot, even if you’re running 100% crit chance.

Game Updates: Wardrobe, Transmutation, Outfits

Seth.1308

The items that are “click to apply to an item” skins need to be updated to “click to unlock skin”. I shouldn’t have to trash an item to get the skin unlock.

I don’t plan on using the wardrobe that often – as I don’t want to have to buy transmutation charges very often, if ever. A repeatable way of earning charges would be nice. An infinite transmutation stone, available at a reasonable gem cost, would also be welcome.

Game Updates: Traits

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Seth.1308

I’m sure others have said it already, but I’m not at all happy about trait unlocks being tied to Karka Queen, Temple, and Arah events. I like the concept of being able to unlock the traits via quests of some sort – I hate the concept of having to wait for event window, needing a certain combination of events to pass/fail, and needing the help of 50 people to kill the boss.

I’m not technically forced to do those things… but 3 gold * 5 skill trees * 8 characters = 120 gold.

Regarding the traits I’ve tried so far:
* Read the Wind – worthless in PvE. Suggest increasing baseline longbow arrow speed slightly, decreasing the speed increase of Read The Wind, and adding a modest damage bonus to the GM trait.
* Striders Defense – I can’t see spending points for a 15% to block projectiles some of the time. How about a projectile reflect instead? Or retaliation on evade?

Rapid Fire doesn't make sense

in Ranger

Posted by: Seth.1308

Seth.1308

Because 1, 3, 4, and 5 are useless during a gap close. LB1 suffers lower damage at short range, LB3 stops you from shooting, LB4 knocks the target away from you, and LB5 requires you to remain stationary.

If you can’t maintain max range, then LB2 fills the gap during the in-between before you switch to melee. If it’s a single shot on cool down, then you have a long wait doing nothing useful during the intermediate ranges.

As is, you can Opening Strike for vulnerability, Rapid Fire while you’re running down the target for more vulnerability, stealth out & then Swoop/Maul for effect.

Skirmish GM Trait: Master of Invulnerability – All ranged attacks will do zero damage regardless of Line-of-sight and range.

Wilderness Survival GM Trait: Downed as One – If your pet is dealt over 100% of it’s total life in a single hit it shall “Yip!” and transfer all damage to you instead.

Nature Magic GM Trait: Soul Twisting – Recharge time for Expertise skills are reduced by 50% when in range of a spirit.

Beast Mastery GM Trait: Unsympathetic Bond – Skills which direct a pet to heal a downed ally will instead cause the pet to walk over to them… and laugh.

Ranger pet, is it bugged?

in Ranger

Seth.1308

I didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary when I was playing earlier. It kind of sounds like your pet was killed.

You wont be able to heal your pet or make it attack if it is dead. If at any time your pet dips below zero health, tt goes into a state where it just follows you around and slowly regens.

The only thing you can really do about that after it is already dead is F4 pet swap. A better solution, of course is to not let it die to begin with.

New skills means hope for a game-changer => Some new combo that effects the class on an order of magnitude level, adding a new playstyle, or filling a niche that was previously under utilized.

Fixing existing mechanics will mostly be in terms of tweaking numbers. It’ll be the same game, different numbers, which isn’t actually “fun” except on the spreadsheets.

I’m perfectly fine if F1,F3,F4 are used to control the pet…. but F2 for Warrior/Thief/Ranger should all be on the same order of game changing effect. Compared to other classes with only a single class-ability, Pet F2 abilities aren’t quite as shiny as they could be.

2) If a Dodge is issued during the course of a Leap action, the leap is canceled and the dodge evasion frame shall occur.
3) Pet swap mechanic updates: Penalty timer for pet death is removed and stow pet is allowed in combat.

I’d wait till tomorrow and give some of the changes a try before passing judgement. If the changes to pet damage are your main concern, the 5 seconds of might on crit is going to counterbalance the auto-attack changes. Pet’s wont have as much frontload dps, but we may even end up with higher sustain.

You might just end up with basically the same build, just a trait swap or two.

Rework for Whirling Defense

Seth.1308

My only complaint is that in dungeon play it isn’t competitive with Guardian Wall or Mesmer Feedback. Granted it does other things besides reflect, but the reflection radius just isn’t big enough to protect a team in a meaningful way.

I try using this in TA, the attacks to the right/left of me that I did not reflect have big enough AOE radius to still deal damage. If I try this in harpy fractal, the harpy just shoots my pet instead, killing both of us.

My guildie was telling me how he watched two groups of people die to one of those things. 10 people, and not a single one of them thought to bring a condition removal skill…

Other neat things to do as a Ranger there:
1) One-skill KO the Young Karka with off-hand axe. Stand at point blank range, wait for the projectile animation, then hit Whirling Axes.
2) Egg Karka vs. Great Sword. As long as you cleave down the eggs, your pet can pretty much destroy the karka’s. Even the champion one (provided you stay in melee range).
3) Zerk Warriors tend to explode when Projectile Karka’s steamroll or go into stompy mode. Either of those are mostly nullified by GS#4. /point /laugh, then AOE rez with healing spirit.

DPS - Greatsword or Sword/x?

in Ranger

Posted by: Seth.1308

Seth.1308

Your damage numbers above, with Wiki activation speed #’s -
Sword Attack chain = (571+571+666) / 1.5 seconds = 1205 DPS
Greatsword chain = (576+576+680) 1.75 seconds = 1046 DPS
Greatsword, avg chain+maul = ((1.5*1047.5 / .75 ) .75/6) + (10465.25/6) = 1177 DPS+Bleed

Only comparing auto-attack, 1h Sword has a margin of 15% + might, in terms of damage.

Spamming Maul on recharge, GS pulls ahead, assuming the bleed damage is significant.

What really makes 1h sword more powerful, IMO, is the off-hand skills. For GS, that’s a block & stun. Both of these are negatives if all you care about is DPS. Sword on the other hand gives you an off-hand weapon as well – particularly warhorn #5 – which tilts the DPS calculation by quite a bit. 1h Sword with Fury >> GS w/o Fury.

What is "Guard" used for?

in Ranger

Posted by: Seth.1308

Seth.1308

CoF Path 1, Slave Driver. If you set Guard where the Searing Flame Effigy spawns with a Devourer, the Effigy will spend the whole fight trying to kill the pet and never engage your group. A ranger can indefinitely tank the Effigy from beyond max range, and DPS/Support the main team at the same time.

TA Solo Chest run. I use guard to have the pet clear a safe spot in the poison blooms, and then I can focus on the boss w/o bothering with targetting blooms.

Penitent path – I set Guard at the fort while I gather mats. And come back to sparkles on the ground.

Champ Karka – I’ll use Guard to distract the boss, while I go gather the mats.

Solo Ice Fractal Run – Guard is used to distract the bonfire defenders. Set guard at the spawn point, light the fire and hang out on the far end. Most/All of the defenders will engage the pet and you can just keep the fire lit and throw the pet an occasional heal-as-one. Guard is also used to force target the pet onto the Ice Elemental, since it refuses to recognize it as an F1 target.

I don’t really mind if dungeon bosses can kill a pet. I mind that we take such a severe penalty for it, and that it takes a fairly long time to recover from it. 60 seconds is a long time to fight at marginalized effectiveness.

Ideally for me:
– add a trait effect allowing heal skills to revive a downed pet.
– add a trait effect reducing/eliminating the downed swap penalty

It’s OK for a pet to die, as long as we have a method for getting ourselves back into the fight.

If it’s test server, then this addition would also be accompanied by the change to the daily/monthly system. We don’t really have a good context what timeframe 40L is attainable in. I would guess that the secondary coin are not Ecto’s – it would make more sense to use Gold if that were the case.

At 80, are drops easier to sell on the TP? Are there craftable items that sell well?

Standard of living at level 80 is higher. You’ll have full exotic gear & ascended jewelry in the stats you want, given time doing dungeon runs.

Rare drops at 80, you’ll see a handful of them a day, and the price of them will roughly equate to the price of an ecto (30-35s). An exotic drop, I’ll see maybe one or two a week. At 80 you can run dungeon explorable, which gives you a 26s reward per path per character, and some of the tokens you can convert to ecto and sell. End of the day, it’s about 5-7g total for me. It’s enough that the 200g+ tier items are attainable with effort.

Craftable items are usually not worth the purchase value of the components used to make them. It’s the reverse of real world, because by crafting it into a specific item you are actually reducing the utility value and potential market size. What crafting does do is give you more options – like making filler items to use at Mystic Forge, or converting lower tier items to Rare’s for potentially better selling price.
