They could add x seconds of evade to our pets when we press F3, with an icd of x seconds. Would be a nice improvement.
I feel like this is the best possible solution.
I just created a Charr ranger to test out some racial abilities and got distracted with a little bit of Fashion Wars 2. This is what I came up with:
http://i.imgur.com/p9RLA95.jpg
I think it looks pretty cool.
Carniverous Appetite would have to be weakened to make up for the fact that it siphoned health. It shouldn’t be as strong as Healing Signet, but a couple hundred health every five seconds or so could have a big impact.
Higher projectile finisher chance on QD would be neat and could really make things like Rapid Fire better.
I just want something to be done about a few of these traits that do nothing for the Ranger and very little for the pet. Compassion Training? Expertise Training? Stability Training? Not only are these borderline useless, but they’re also completely unfun.
Honed Axes could be changed to augment every mainhand axe skill and decrease the cooldown by 20%.
Ricochet – Bounces to one additional target.
Splitblade – Throws two additional axes.
Winter’s Bite – Chill becomes a small AoE (like Sigil of Hydromancy.)
I’d love to see Carniverous Appetite siphon health to the Ranger instead of the pet, or maybe both, I dunno.
Quick Draw needs an auxiliary effect. Maybe our arrows cannot be reflected with it? Might be too powerful.
Sword/Dagger is comical in this match-up. They pretty much guarantee that you dodge every important blow.
Rangers now have some fantastic condi-clear potential! Sometimes I use a build that runs Sigil of Purity/Sigil of Generosity, Empathic Bond, Survival of the Fittest, and Signet of Renewal.
Six passive clears every 10 seconds(ish) and some on-demand cleanses? It’s silly.
Most of them are too long for their effect.
“Huge nerf” is a bit of an exaggeration, but it does kinda suck.
Or we could, you know, switch weapons until stability is gone? Use Spiders with very, very long immobilizes? Dual spider set-ups (Jungle/X) with Malicious Training have access to a ton of immobilize which laughs at stability.
Or what about the Rangers smart enough to bring Quick Draw? A three second stealth every nine seconds really helps with being slippery while stability is up.
No, it’s not reasonable to sit at 1000 range for the duration of another Rangers RaO elite, but let’s not pretend like that’s a very common situation. Most stability does not last that long.
Lunar Wolf would make sense.
With Spiders/Canines, Malicious Training, and Sigil of ice; Longbow is a very powerful weapon in 1v1 encounters.
I’ve won many duels with this build:
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fNAQNAT8YnEqQLLWLI+rAVLGoPoWeABQ7fYavBm/7HA-TpATQAg9H6lBAA
You have to outplay thieves to win though, which is why I switched to double melee. This build is stronger however vs condi engineers, MM necro’s, and any mesmer build. So if you do go double melee, replace your GS with longbow when you come across those classes.
This is eerily close to my WvW build, which is very strong in 1v1 situations.
In sPvP I’ve had luck going toe-to-toe with condi warriors with a celestial BM hybrid. Not worth kitten in a team fight, though.
With the exception of heal-on-shout S/S, LB condi warriors, I trash most warriors in WvW with my LB, S/D power build.
I think many Warrior players just don’t bother learning how to fight 1v1. They slide by on some dumb 100B gimmick so often that they don’t care to learn other strategies.
Also, Ranger poison uptime is huge in this match-up. We’re one of the few classes that can really kick Healing Signet in the teeth.
Was this WvW or sPvP?
Pretty well played here, I agree with Awge that I would probably choose different pets. I find the control you get from canines/spiders is pretty invaluable. I never run DPS pets unless I’m 6 points into BM. (For dueling, anyway.)
I noticed that Kinssssz was in your chat log. Tell’im Saethe said “HI!”
It isn’t necessary, but I don’t know how people roam without +25% movement speed! (Signet or Runes.)
This actually looks pretty solid. You’ve got a lot of anti-condition lined up, which is nice, you’re not going full glass, which is even better, because rangers suck at that. I predict you’ll do pretty well in 1v1 situations but I don’t feel like this is gonna have the staying power to ward off (or even escape from) two or three opponents.
I’d consider using one of our vigor traits. Vigor = dodges, dodges = protection. I personally don’t like Sigil of Rage, ‘cause the cooldown is just kinda long, but I can’t say that it’s a bad idea. Even with little investment into condition damage, I would consider a Sigil of Earth on your shortbow.
6 seconds of direct damage mitigation is very powerful in small scale fights. I’ve closed out several fights because I can kind of carelessly hack away with my sword while my wolf, Buster, just gets smacked in the face. Combined with RaO, it provides stability and damage mitigation to stomp people when you’re outnumbered.
I think a better way to improve this skill would be to grant boons to your pet for the duration. Six seconds of protection and retaliation, or something.
I think they should bathe and groom them, first. My Wolf has gone almost two years without a bath and he smells.
No, you weren’t the only one, because there isn’t a range increase and I feel like anyone that used a longbow for any length of time would have noticed the same.
What jcbroe said, we can just reliably hit at max range so it probably seems like there’s a range increase because we’re all used to missing when we sit at 1100-1500 range.
Been out with real-life stuff guys, will probably be out for a bit longer. Looking forward to the April adjustment patch.
That said, I’ve just sent a lot of invites. Unless you have max guilds, you should have one. If not, send me an in-game message.
I’m pretty excited about this trait, if the healing ends up being 1-1.5k, there’s a lot of potential in it.
I’m gonna go out on a limb and guess that we’ll be seeing some trait reworks. There’s no way they would put another longbow trait in MM without reworking the other stuff, right?
Right?
Even so, this trait doesn’t look like it’s worth taking if it’s only more arrow speed for a GM trait. While the concept is nice, I just don’t seeing it being very useful in practice. Now if it were also merged with Eagle Eye, that’d be another story. Arrows move twice as fast and range is increased to 1500? Sounds solid.
Sorry, haven’t logged in in a couple days (Dark Souls 2!) but invites are up to date.
Awge, I will expand as much as I need to!
Invites are up to date!
Got a couple days off coming up and I’ll be able to get a lot of work done on a website (well, blog page) and other stuff.
It’s been kept pretty casual so far, but I’ve had a lot of fun running Ranger dungeons with some of the new people I’ve met in the guild. I think thinks will get better (and more hardcore) as time goes, but I won’t rush it.
Last night we on Maguuma had 7 rangers roaming in WvW all with Longbows, wolves, and Jungle Spiders. It was hilarious and absurdly effective.
Invites should be up to date.
First WINDSday night dungeon run went alright, got a few dungeon paths knocked out. Hope to see a few more faces next time!
Can we get more info regarding events and such? Perhaps a website would be good.
That’s actually something I’m working on. I work a lot so between working and playing I only make progress on it sparingly. Should be up soon-ish, though. I’ll post the link when I’m done.
In the meantime I’m using the guild message of the day for events and such.
Invites should be up to date.

because watching my s/d lightning reflex ranger fly across the screen makes other classes seem boring
This. This so many times. Every other class is just so drab to me because of how acrobatic Ranger play is.
And my wolf, Buster.
Alright, sent more invites.
Will send some invites when I get home from work tonight.
Also going to update the original post. Decided to change how the guild ranks work a little bit to try and encourage more repping since I don’t like mandatory repping.
Wednesday nights will be guild Ranger dungeon runs!
Some people are happy being lazy.
I hope your guild fares better than the last guild
Added to the Sticky Thread!
Thanks for adding us to the sticky!
EDIT: Invites sent.
Dang, this man says it’s his first character and you guys tell him to buy some of the most expensive runes in the game! (I use Traveler runes, so it’s good advice; Just not for now.)
When I am doing map exploration I make sure I have these things:
- +25% Movement Speed buff.
- Bird pet. You can hit F1 on random targets, wait for swiftness buff, then call it back before it attacks.
- Sword/Warhorn.
- Quickening Zephyr, Sic’em, and Rampage as One.
In dungeons make sure you run Spotter trait and Vigorous Spirits trait with a Frost Spirit.
Mixed feelings about this.
On one hand I think it’s kinda neat. We could dance in and out of aspect mode to gain buffs and protect our pet from big attacks. This could promote skillful play, but it could also promote even lazier play by just leaving a pet in aspect form.
Re-work F1 to be Attack/Retreat/Attack new target, F2 remains as pet skill, F3 now toggles aspect mode, F4 remains as is. There’d be no need for a “stow pet” option.
Put a 20 second cooldown (effected by Loud Whistle) on the toggle aspect key, so it doesn’t get abused, but it could also be considered as a pet swap so that all the on swap traits are still useful.
Kind of undermines some of what it means to be a Ranger in this game, but it could be fun, I think.
Invites should be up to date.
Now that we’ve grown considerably, I’m going to start splitting up the ranks so that we all know who does what. I’ll also want to start organizing events like dungeon runs or sparring sessions (Will be getting an arena soon.)

Proposal Overview
Enhancing the effectiveness and sustain of power builds through trait changes and skill updates.
Goal of Proposal
Currently Ranger power builds lack the sustain of their condition counterparts because their primary weapons (Longbow, Greatsword) do little to buff the ranger or keep sustained damage on their target.
Proposal Functionality
Two things that would boost sustain of Ranger power builds would be increasing the amount of boons available to them through weapon skills and utilities and making the Poison condition more available to both of these weapons. This would not only allow them to be more durable, but also output more damage and with the help of Poison, whittle down enemies.
The Dec 10th Two-Handed training trait was a good idea, but power builds can’t afford to invest 20 points into Nature Magic due to the rangers reliance on Empathic Bond.
I would propose to add more access to boons like protection, regeneration, and fury in the talent trees (Marksmanship, Skirmishing) that offer more to power builds, as well as possibly adding a trait that gives a chance to cause poison on critical hits to one of these trees.
Associated Risks
Overdoing it. Condition rangers are already incredible at small skirmishes, so adding buffs to compensate power rangers might make the condition builds even stronger.
Invites are all sent.
I’m in the process of moving, so I’ll probably be out for a few days. AEFA will be taking care of invites in the meantime.
If SotW healed as well as Healing Signet and we still had access to a normal heal, we’d be unkillable in anything other than zerg situations.
- Lightning Reflexes change, while past due, is excellent.
- Martial Mastery change is incredible if there’s no ICD. Might allow us to drop Vigorous Renewal or Primal Reflexes in some builds.
- Two-Handed Training – I like to see some traits condensed and made more useful, but I’m iffy on this. A lot of us can’t afford the 20 points in NM on greatsword builds.
Overall, this is good for us; Don’t forget we are getting a pet responsiveness fix as well, which is massive.
There’s a thread about it already, but here’s a link to the leaked patch notes. Remember to take it with a grain of salt.
More invites sent out.
I sent an you an invite when you messaged me, Awge. Still waiting for it to be accepted.
Invites sent.
IGN: Lyra The Timid
Server: Yak’s Bend
Game Type: Mostly PvE and fractals, but I’m getting more into PvP and WvWI remember hearing talk about an all ranger guild before. Does one really not already exist?
Tried to send an invite, but too many guilds.
Wow, this is huge for us.
Alright I’ve got an invite sent out to everyone who posted here except for Aden Celeste.
TwirlyNinja, your invite was sent.
Aden Celeste, I tried to send an invite but you appear to be in too many guilds already.
Pirate Needler is not only a long-ish skin, but it also looks freakin’ sweet.
Rangers!
Favorable Winds, the unofficially unofficial ranger guild has been founded. Our goal here is to build a large, cross-server forum for theorycrafting, kittening, moaning, complaining, and chatting with like minded individuals about our favorite class.
This guild will not be limited to any one game type. PvE, WvW, and PvP players are all welcome. Really, anybody that loves playing ranger or just wants to learn how to play ranger is invited. I want this guild to be a great resource for anybody wanting to know about our class. All you’ve gotta do is drop the following information in this thread.
- In game name
- Server
- Preferred game type
I’ll check back periodically and send out invites.
Repping policies have changed recently due to lack of guild activity. It’s not 100% rep time, but I like seeing and talking to the people I’m inviting instead of of just seeing their name online and never hearing from them.
Depending on how well received the guild is, I will organize weekly dungeon runs, monthly build contests, and 1v1 Ranger tournaments in a private arena that I’ll fund. I’m sure we can come up with other fun stuff for our members to do too.
I do not currently have a Teamspeak server, but I do use Skype when I need to voice chat. It’s free and easy to use. If we get a ton of members and a lot of demand for a TS, then I’ll consider buying a server.
I hope to be hearing from a lot of you! Happy hunting.

This is why.
