You need to keep in mind conditions crush us at the moment. The class is overall very well balanced at the moment. Yes with glint we are very strong, but at a cost of upkeeps on energy. Like any class if it is played well it will shine.
Except, y’know, if you spec to deal with them.
I think that, fundamentally, Rangers are the best 1v1 class. Between the pet and the ranged pressure that longbow puts out, it’s very difficult to deal with. Functionally, however, Elementalists are just so strong right now that they still pull ahead in this debate. Open world or not. That’s probably going to change soon, though.
I think it’s absurd that it ignores stability, but it’s okay otherwise.
I want a turtle with an F2 that causes it to withdraw into its shell, blocking all projectiles for like 10 seconds. Make it ground targeted.
So good in open field 1v1’s that I fall asleep at the keyboard and still do well.

Looks like my thread got necro’d (nyuknyuk.)
Since it’s here I may as well report that my endeavor into necromancy has gone very well. It’s not an easy class to learn (in fact, I don’t think any other class needs to be aware of so many things at the same time,) but it’s been smooth. My only hiccups are dealing with proper kiting in the WvW/PvP settings and proper LF management; I tend to either forget I have it or blow it all at once.
Longbow rangers are kittens… And that’s coming from a three year LB ranger main.
Thanks for all the tips!
kitten watching others play games.
Infamous controller snatcher right here.
I just watched the PoI and came here to post about this! Very cool references. Especially to someone that’s been playing fighting games for a long, long time.
I think Mr. Norfolk is a fighting game fan. I feel like I’ve seen him wearing some BrokenTier (or other FG) merchandise on streams before.
Hammer would work as well, though I think ‘Eruption’ is rather a fitting name.
Better yet, make it a big electric guitar that you hold by the neck and bonk people with.
Is this whole “carried by food/stats” thing something people tell themselves so they feel better about dying in WvW?
Why is it always assumed that it’s lop-sided? Why can’t both players have food and ascended stats? Most of your good roamers have devoted the resources to getting all that stuff too, so it’s still a level playing field. And as Puck said, some of the really ridiculous sPvP builds can be dealt with a little more easily by being able to mix’n’match stats (or by not losing if you don’t stand on a point.)
There are great players in both battlefields. How ‘bout we don’t detract from anyone that’s doing well?
I’m a Pole, what ya need?
kitten it, I wanted to make this joke.
To make this trait more appealing, I think they should add something like “Incoming conditions pets receive are reduced by 33%”
No disrespect to this person, but really? It’s pretty average gameplay, to be honest. I see a lot of room for improvement.
Low tier music, though.
On my PowerShout build I use Empathic Bond and Lyssa runes. I’ve found that it’s been sufficient since SotP is on such a low cooldown; Activating SotP to convert five conditions to boons along with its original affect is kind of like turning on Gameshark codes.
Basically Empathic keeps me sustained, Lightning Reflexes prevents death by immob, and Lyssa conversion is there for me when I make a stupid mistake.
What’s your build? Could I get a link?
Thanks.
This is what I’m currently using.
Zealot’s?
How do you keep your bird alive at all?
Zealot weapons just to hit 300 hp/s from all sources of regen. I just have this thing where if I don’t hit certain numbers I’m just not satisfied.
Why wouldn’t the bird stay alive? It’s generally pushing over 400 hp/s before “We Heal As One.” Proper pet management will keep anything alive in small scale fights with that kind of healing.

I’ve taken to S/A after the patch because Beastly Warden makes Path of Scars reliable (but the same can be said for Maul.) I still prefer Hornet Sting/Monarch Leap for movement on and around the battlefield. The leap portion wins against Swoop hands down for crazy acrobatic maneuvers (even for OOC mountain-goating/parkour.)
That’s already been fixed. Quit making excuses for your losses and you’ll become a better player.
Aesthetically I think Sylvari take the cake here.
Asura have Technobabble, and on a Moment of Clarity build that’s probably the best trait/racial synergy in the game.
It’s Tanbin, of course he’s kicking kitten . I remember he used to preach to me about how good Aristocracy runes were. Glad to see he’s still using them.
Wow, Sol. It’s been a while!
This is literally the exact trait layout I was using last night in WvW for roaming. It’s unbelievably strong and i won many outnumbered fights with it.
- Does Natural Regeneration still also heal the ranger?
This is probably the #1 thing I want to know tomorrow and I’m gonna be at work so I need you to post your findings on this ASAP.
:D
All this time I had been planning on using “Lead the Wind,” but it’s getting harder and harder to resist Remorseless when things like THIS exists. There’s going to be some crazy synergy here, it’s exciting.
If it means they aren’t using S/F then I’m happy.
I’d rather see Honed Axes give 10% crit chance for each axe equipped, since ferocity doesn’t do much for condition builds. At least this way, you get a benefit to power builds and condition builds through on-crit procs.
Otherwise. Perfect.
We already number about 10 on Maguuma, that I know of. I’d like to gather there, if possible.
It will be a thing!
In light of the various Guild Hall information, expect some big guild changes to be coming through. Probably going to be a little more strict on participating (never 100% rep,) and perhaps a real effort to get our WvW players on one server.
Buuuuut Saeeee my Ping in NA is so baaad >.>
I know, and it’s not mandatory, but maybe we can have YOU push for EU players on YOUR server.
[Wind] EU division.
Talgo is awesome and definitely worth watching.
Glad to see you got your stuff set up!
I’m really hoping the SS range increase was made baseline. It would really spoil the weapon for me otherwise.
I feel the same about offhand axe, which in Grouch’s posted notes, has no trait at all (not even Honed Axes) that will increase the range of the skills or decrease their cool down. I understand the list is incomplete, but this all worries me.

I am unable to send invites right now, but when I get back home I’ll do the thing.

I always felt like when designing medium armor, they made it all for engineer or thief and forgot that rangers existed.
Who romps through the woods and ranges across open lands in a coat that gets caught on every passing branch and stick?
And who the heck tinkers around in a workshop in a coat that’ll get stuck in a turret gear and pull you into the machinery?
And who the heck tries to break into places with a big ruffly coat that makes noise and restricts stealthy movement?
Heck, the tattered long coats seems to fit a trapper/hunter/mountain main kind of look more than anything else, seems like they’re meant for rangers.
In other words, the coats fit NO class, knock it off, art team!
And before someone counters in with Sneaktheif and Magitech, yeah, there’s a couple skins that are obviously meant for a given class, but by and large most medium skins are just kind of there and seem more meant to fit random archetypes but not a specific class. Like pirate gear could extend to anyone, but it’s kind of odd on everyone at the same time.
At least there are a few things that fit well with those.Pirate gear makes sense on a thief, right? I mean, they’re pillaging and pirating. Right? I really think that nothing in that wardrobe is appropriate for a ranger. Maybe the GW1 Heritage Armor. Maybe.
BUT — I get your points.
I’d personally like to some some pelts or something, I think that’d be awesome.
If they changed WD to a moving 3s channel with a 15s CD, it would be sweet.
Oh, and PoS is a great skill, what could you do to improve it that wouldn’t end up with QQ and nerfing?
Y’know, most people want WD to drop the root, but I think I’d rather just see it do an absurd amount of damage. Like a Warrior’s 100Blades; You stand in it, you die.
Combined with the reflect, that would give us some interesting downed body cleave.

I have a feeling that the taunt will activate before the fear, then immediately be overwritten. It actually makes the wolf inferior to their canine counterparts when used with this trait.
I’m excited about using an Alpine Wolf that applies AoE Blind, Weakness, Chill and Taunt.
It’ll still be the only mode until HoT comes out, save Courtyard, I guess.
And just for discussion, because I prefer that to one-line snark, how would these apply to Stronghold? What would you do with them? There’s a lot of space to move in the SH map, which makes them awfully easy to counter, since kiting is a huge weakness for trap builds (especially after the removal of ground targeting.) You can impede NPCs with Spike Trap and Frost Trap, or you could take Muddy Terrain on a Wilderness build with superior condition removal and do the same thing.
What are your ideas?
BM
Pet: 150 power ~10%, 150 prec 7% more crit chance, 10% more damage, 8 might stacks (3 from swap, 5 from crits), 240 power, ~16%, 20% more crit damage, 12.5% more damage from quickness = 48.5% damage with +7% crit chance to do 20% more damage on crits, plus bleed on crits (minimal, given the condi damage nerf).
Player: 12.5% damage from quickness but only when the pet is alive.
Calculating only 8 might stacks seems a little unfair to me versus the assumed 25 you gave Nature Magic. If there are any trash mobs around, you will have a much higher number and if you’re concerned about DPS, you’ll be using sword and it grants might on every third hit (something you have to consider when you have quickness up often.)
Just a thought.
Runes that make your low cool down utilities give you stealth and prevent you from contesting/preventing a decap?
Not sure they’d see much use.
I see very little reason other than Protective Ward to bother with Nature Magic now. As Heimskarl said, there’s Fortifying Bond for pet DPS but BM can just take Companion’s Might and benefit from all the other cool pet damage bonuses.
I don’t see why it wouldn’t work with Bark Skin. Hell even if it were only -33% damage, then it’d still be very strong. Especially if you’re also rocking the -5% damage from Oakheart Salve.
Traited for a 48 second cool down that breaks stun, gives swiftness and gives regen, I see Protect Me being a very viable alternative to Signet of Stone. Especially if you’re running Trooper runes.
They said in the last preview that spirits will no longer be unbound. Ever.
But what about when four other players are also applying those burns?
This is going to be a stretch on Anet’s reasoning why 2HT and Honed Axes are in BM, so bear with me a bit. Both of those weapons have a skill that affects the pet, Hilt Bash and Winter’s Bite, respectively. Not saying that’s the actual reason, it’s just a guess on why those traits are there.
All weapon sets have a skill that applies a buff to your pet. Sword Auto, LB3, SB4, Axe3, GS5. Offhands are of no concern here since you’ll have the mainhand attack that buffs pets.
Stackable burn is going to make Sun Spirit very obnoxious, methinks.
Another thing I noticed was absolutely no mention of a range increase on offhand skills to compensate for losing Offhand Training. Offhand axe doesn’t even appear to have a cool down reduction trait.
Dagger without the extra range is dead to me.
I noticed this yesterday and was extremely upset. For balance reasons I can understand why Troll Unguent didn’t make the cut, but Heal as One could have really, really used some love. Rampage as well.
Hoping it is an oversight.
I thought it might be neat to have a thread where we can post about upcoming synergies for our class. A collection of ideas that we as a community have went “Oh, sweet, that’ll work well together.” Be it simple or complex, post your ideas here! I encourage using sources outside of the ranger trait lines here as well.
Examples to get the ball rolling:
— Moment of Clarity plus the new Storm Spirit active will create an AoE 6 second daze.
— Any runes that greatly increase Protection duration, when paired with the Protective Ward trait will result in about a 50% upkeep of Protection before factoring in Companion’s Defense.
— Pets with low cool down F2 abilities will benefit greatly from Go For The Eyes and Wilting Strike. Additionally, pets that already cause conditions on their F2 will be amazing for providing cover conditions. (Hawks will cause bleeding, weakness, and blind every 5 seconds!)
— Clarion Bond, Call of the Wild, and a Fern Hound with Invigorating Bond will pump the healing total of Healing Spring up drastically when it’s all used together.
There are tons of other synergies I can think of alone, so I’d really like to see what other people are coming up with.
