People telling the OP that “it’s just an achievement, hurr-durr” should keep in mind that some gamers are going after achievements as a form of end game. Missing out on one due to no fault of their own IS a big deal. Not to mention that this particular achi was bugged for a whole week while the event lasts for two weeks.

I don’t go around commenting about mini pets and armour skins being useless even though both of them are. For me, that is. For others it’s an integral part of the game and missing out on a special helmet or rare pet because of other people’s shortcomings would be a big deal.

This is not about sitting down and organizing an instanced 40 man raid but organizing a 150 man open world event which can be screwed up by random people passing by, going AFK in the vicinity, dragging mobs on top of the fighters or joining in without the required buff and consumables. Oh and you have one week to make it happen.

Stop with the “it’s only 10 points” posts. Don’t be that guy.

A friend and I started fiddling around with the character creations on the weekend, seeing what we can come up with. Can’t seem to make a male that’s lean but not scrawny, has angular face and sports a presentable long hair.

Honestly, I think all Asura look best when bald. I haven’t seen one with hair yet that looked better than if that same one went hairless on top.

The new hairstyle is much better, IMO, than a bald female Asura. I love it, and wish I had more color choices for the ear flaps. But anyway, here’s my Asura, bald with t3 helm and with hair. They both look great, IMO.

Oh my! She looks stunning!

On one hand I love having no roles and thus running with guildies regardless of their preferred class. If we want to do an instance with three engineers, a mesmer and a thief then we can even if it’s not as efficient as ideal setups. On the other, it makes group activities fall apart and become a “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” zerg that does not in fact encourage teamwork.

Huddling in a specific spot, blowing skills as soon as their cooldown is over and lucking out on combo field blasters is not teamwork. Replace all other people with NPCs programmed to spam their auto attack while stacking on top of us and no one would notice the difference. Kind of like the poor man’s GW1 henchmen.

What the teamwork part of the game needs is the option to morph into a role whenever one wants to. Have something on the Hero panel that allows us to switch with a cooldown of 30 minutes or some other mild restriction to prevent people switching back and forth too much and exploit mechanics.

Example:

When a ranger switches to support his healing power is increased, boon duration increased, toughness decreased, attack power decreased while his skills keep their original mechanic but change their effect. The barrage skill of longbow is still a long range AoE but instead of AoE damage it does AoE heal. The further away the ranger is, the bigger the heal. Traps do not deal damage but keep their combo field effect and grant vigor / protection / regeneration / stability depending on which trap the ranger uses.

Spirits do nothing on their own and are invulnerable until utilized, following their master. When utilized the spirits root in place, grant their current buff and debuff with 100% chance and longer duration (stone spirit → 10 sec protection instead of 3, 5 sec immobilization instead of 2) then dissolve into thin air and go on cooldown. No proc chance RNG involved. Pets deal minimal damage but all F2 skills are reduced to have a 5 sec cooldown.

I’m pulling the numbers out of my behind so those can be tweaked but when I heard about GW2 having no trinity, I assumed that meant everyone being able to take on any role at any time. Instead of everyone being a glorified damage dealer.

I would like to see a patch that fixes bugs instead of introducing even more of them. I know that Arenanet has to work with a lower budget due to no subscription but never in my life have I played an MMO as bugged as GW2 and I have played quite many low quality free to play titles in my younger years.

Events getting stuck or not even starting, champions turning unkillable at 1% HP, monsters randomly going into a permanent evade mode, achievements not being awarded properly, several class skills not functioning, broken scaling, inexplicable disconnecting…

I don’t want to see two airheaded women kiss. I want to see a playable game. So far my experience has been less than stellar. To put it mildly.

Slowpoke TTS has been able to get the achievement when enough of our members are on after a teq raid and want the achievement. We just killed it tonight around 7am server time with some early bird NA players and night owl OCE players.

That’s great but when I asked, I got the answer that TTS has no plans to organize an achievement run as most members already have it. I keep an eye on your website but I’m only seeing Worm and Teq events on the calendar.

What’s the next time you might do it? I’m getting rather frustrated with this thing. Yet again spent all my time looking for groups doing it, participating in kills and have nothing to show for it as even on Tarnished Coast main we never had enough people to down the knights faster than 9 minutes.

No game ever had perfect balance BUT the imbalance in this one is hilarious. As a guardian I can solo champions and group events while I see mesmers, rangers, thieves and engineers having trouble with a veteran and its adds. Not to mention that those people have been here for a while and I started the game about two weeks ago. That’s not balanced. At all.

Having certain classes perform like 5-10% better than all others until the next balance patch comes up is sort of to be expected. Having certain classes perform almost twice as better as every other and do it indefinietly is not acceptable. Having certain classes perform so poorly that no one wants them in their group is also not acceptable.

Contacted different guilds and guested to various servers with no luck.

The reason I posted this topic is that I could find an NA guild or group somewhere out there doing the achi in the time frame I’m avalaible since the ones I managed to contact all did it between 20:00 and 24:00 PDT.

The event is over within 48 hours and this is the last achi I’m missing.

Hello!

I have been attempting to do this achievement since the final bug fix went live and never succeeded. Contacted different guilds and guested to various servers with no luck. I can be on anytime between 02:00 and 18:00 PDT (server time) and even though this time frame is rather big (16 hours!) it’s never good enough for the achievement running groups.

Is there any group or guild out there who does this achi at a time when I can participate? I’m playing on Tarnished Coast (NA) with a guardian. Bringing my own potions and food, of course.

PS.: Congratulations on designing an achievement more unfair and frustrating than School of Hard Knocks in WoW, Arenanet. A real bang up job.

in Battle for Lion’s Arch - Aftermath

Slowpoke.2749

The difference is in whether the person lets their conditions define them.

Our conditions do not define us but all of them have an impact on our lives. I’m writing this as someone living with multiple disabilities. Taimi does not reflect that sentiment. Her golem isn’t hard to control, never malfunctions, appears to be extremely durable and is superior in every way when compared to her actual physical body. Why did the writers give her a disability at all when it has no drawbacks or consequences? It feels artificial and cheap.

To Taimi's Creators

in Battle for Lion’s Arch - Aftermath

Slowpoke.2749

It’s an interesting issue. While I appreciate the addition of a disabled character, I do feel that its still somewhat lacking in that it plays to the stereotype of – “Disabled people must be super intelligent or something like professor X and Oracle”.

I`d be a lot more impressed if we saw a disabled norn or charr who wasn’t somehow gifted with an intellect and gadgets that basically made their disability into a benefit.

While I like Taimi, I feel her disability is tacked on. If Roxx lost an arm and was then told she was unfit for the warband – that would be a significant plotline involving disability.

When I see postings like this, I know that there are people who might not be handicapped in the way many others are and they can’t comprehend it in the least.

Taimi gives hope to all who are struggling with disease and maladies produced not by us, but by those very forces that were “supposed” to help us when we are very ill.

While Taimi’s impairment is a nice nod towards people with disabilities, it doesn’t hinder her in the slightest and thus makes for an unrelatable character. Take away the deux-ex-machina golem suit so we can see a character whose illness actually impacts them instead of being treated as a tacked on woobie trait.

Tag the boss in the first phase and then skirt around the edges for the remainder of the fight as a reliable way to get the achievement. There’s some new anti-AFK laser that targets the personal instance entrance where people used to huddle together but you can just stay away from Scarlet and only move in either direction when there’s a laser appearing under you.

The invisible beam doesn’t fail the achi. I got it after being hit with the beam twice within the last phase. Getting damaged by a transparent bubble shield and stepping on the orange mark don’t count. The AoE bombs of Scarlet Briars can fail it. No idea about the knockback.

This is my experience after 20 successful holo kills. Then again, I heard there was another hotfix patch since the last time I logged in.

And it’s wrong to label someone an elitist if they give you an advice of running the zerk gear because it’s the best one in this game.

No. Berserker is a high risk – high reward gear. Someone who is new, inexperienced, a slow learner, uninterested or doesn’t have a fast reaction time should NOT run around in berserket gear because their most often seen foe will be the ground.

Wear berserker if you know what you are doing. Especially when it comes to dodging, blocking and reflecting. Look into other options if you don’t feel like you can pull that off.

This kind of boss already exist in the game. Its Kholer. He is clearly there to push people to learn how to dodge. But since it’s optional and have a really bad reward, nobody do it and nobody can learn from it.

When the champion troll spawns I kite him into Kohler and the group makes bets on how much damage the troll can do to him before getting killed. It’s a reliable 50-60% HP loss for Kohler.

Clever, eh? Eh?

I’ll just show myself out.

On topic: The game aims to please casuals because they are the ones who turn the most profit. Casuals log in for short periods and so consume content slower but are more willing to spend cash on gems because they will not [grind champion trains / speed run dungeons / farm material nodes / play the TP / perform other profitable but boring activity] and instead just want to jump right into the “fun” stuff.

These people more often than not have no intention to spend time on watching video guides, reseraching optimal builds, reading up on their class or looking into the uses of food and potions. Guild Wars 2 was marketed as a game for them and so if Arenanet decided to tailor content to people who are knowledgable or at least eager to spend time learning, these extreme casuals would leave and take their wallets with them.

From a business point of view, it makes no sense to cater to people who know what they are doing because they are also the type who can make a decent living within the game (knowing what and where to farm, avoiding repair costs due rarely dying, being accepted into dungeon speed runs, maybe even selling dungeon runs, etc.) and so they’re more likely to be able to afford cash shop items by converting gold to gems – meaning no revenue for Anet.

Indeed. While I don’t agree with the poster elevating the Living Story above such RPG masterpieces as the Dragon Age games, Guild Wars 2 has good enough writing to serve a massive audience. On the flip side, it’s still better than WoW. That game has numerous books dedicated to its lore and yet the writing is still so bad that all characters could be successfully played by Kristen Stewart if they ever made a movie.

The Kasmeer + Marjory romance is on the level of Twilight. Good enough for an MMO as it caters to a wide audience but not something I would praise.

I have the same kind of problem with GW2 warriors that I had with WoW warriors and warriors in most games. The entire class revolves around brute forcing your way through everything. Charging, knocking down, stomping, shouting and swinging around your weapon like a neanderthal while generating rage to do these things even more effectively. How can that be made exciting?!

It’s the kind of class that never required much thinking in any RPG. Not even in the ye olde tabletop ones. Good for both beginner and experienced gamers as it performs reasonably well in unsteady hands and shines when used by an expert. See Lupicus solo and such. Warriors are like Captain America on horse steroid.

Going to file a ticket because guardians can only equip one shield. This is obviously a bug. Also, we need more boons. Invent a thousand more so I can fill the entire screen with boon icons. Boons give me a special kind of satisfaction.

I thought the cutscene with I think it was Kasmeer? (I don’t really follow the lore so I wouldn’t know) and Jory was really well done.

The emotions were so realistic, and I thought it was extremely brave of Anet to show the kissing scene between the two females – simply because many gaming companies don’t dare to talk about or even show that other sexualities exist, so I really applaud Anet for that.

It’s a very rare sight to see LGBT people who I can identify with in real life (in fact in my whole entire life, I’ve only ever seen 2 gay couples while I was out and about – excluding television and movies of course), let alone as characters in MMORPG’s, so it was really nice of Anet to do that :-) It reminds me that I’m not alone in this world.

If I write a book about two women shouting each other’s name and making out for 145 pages, will you buy it? Because that’s all there was to this cutscene. Felt like one of those mainstream anime series.

Jory -> I have been hit by an explosion and now I appear dead. Such drama!
Kas -> I’m going to shout your name over and over while hiccuping instead of checking for a pulse because I’m dumber than the cast of Jersey Shore. Also, here’s a kiss.
Jory -> Well, what do you know? I’m not dead after all! That kiss woke me up and instantly cured whatever ailed me. It feels as if the writers have decided to just pull a Snow White on you guys.

Good thing I completed the No More Tricks achievement a few hours before the latest patch. After 19 Scarlet kills I got fed up of failing the achi because of the bugged scorchmarks (doing damage for about 3 seconds after the visuals have disappeared, making you have to guess whether it’s safe to move or not) and joined those skirting on the sidelines. This tactic awarded me the achi on the 20th run and at that point I couldn’t care less about how legitimate it was.

The In Tune one was managable for me but then again I’m playing a somewhat defensive guardian so I never got downed and had a couple of single target skills to use. I offer my condolences to rangers, necromancers and mesmers who can’t get it (or the No Tricks one) due the useless pet / minion / phantasm AI that can not be controlled but counts towards the achi.

People would not have to resort to cheap tricks if the encounter was not bugged and the achievements did not promote avoidance instead of active participation. Want to give us a challenge while encouraging teamwork?

Try something like “Elemental Denial – do X number of combo field attacks to each elemental hologram with the correct attunement on” or “Invisible But Not Invincible – make X amount of mini holograms vulnerable by kiting them into Scarlet’s rainbow field and then kill them” which both promote awareness, teamwork and tactical play.

fix for stacking in pve?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Slowpoke.2749

Slowpoke.2749

People act like this issue is specific to GW2. It isn’t. I have gone back to WoW after a long hiatus and let me tell you how people defeat the final boss of the hardest raid: stacking.

I was part of such runs where we pulled a boss to a comfortable spot, stacked up and ignored all mechanics. The exploding iron stars, the wolfriders, the desecrated weapons, the shapeshifted team members. All became a non-issue through stacking and spamming our respective abilities. That fight was supposed to be the pinnacle of the last expansion.

The general problem in this game is the amount of trash and the health of the bosses. People skip whatever they can and stack in berserker gear for whatever they can’t because enemies have a huge health pool, spam crowd control abilities and more often than not come in groups. What could be a challenging and innovative dungeon run becomes a tedious exercise.

Stacking makes it so that the unskippable and boring foes can be finished off quicker due to the large amount of boons and debuffs that gets applied consistently. Not ideal but without it we would have an hour long explorable paths with a minimum of five wipes.

This unintended behaviour will happen as long as people are more motivated by the shinies than the thrill of the encounter mechanic which is – admittedly – lacking at the moment.

After a few runs, and trying what ppl said here, what worked for me as a guardian was:

- with staff equiped, use RETREAT rigth after the cinematic, use staff 3 ( symbol of swiftness) wile in more or less close to her ( mid way) and runing a litle to the rigth side, dodge the circles in ground just by runing and press F, may take some pratice, dont need to dodge after starting the F, just need to get that faster, thats why i used RETREAT + STAFF 3

SRY if some words are wrong, english is not my native language

have fun

THIS has worked!

I’m not sure if it’s because this was the intended solution or because we managed to bug out Scarlet. I sprinted to her via swiftness and started the finishing animation before she could cast the second AoE attack but I noticed that her arm kind of froze in the air and the entire NPC went rigid for a few seconds. Then the animation loop resumed but by that time I was almost done with the finisher.

To the people telling the poster that chests should be avoided at all costs: if everyone took that advice then you would have no skins to buy off of the TP. Some people take the initiative to gamble so you lot wouldn’t have to.

If everyone took that approach then ArenaNet would be forced to change the manner in which they offer new skins. And I eye-rolled at the notion that people who drop $40 or more dollars on these skins are doing so for some altruistic reason.

/sigh

Those people do not gamble for us but their gambling is the reason we can farm gold and purchase the skins off of the trading post. I repeat, if no one opens a single Black Lion Chest ever again, there will be no further skins appearing on the market. Thus when the currently remaining ones are all bought, you can kiss goodbye to ever getting one until you either give in and gamble yourself or wait for others to start opening the chests again.

All the “smart” people commenting that only morons would waste money (either in-game or real world currency) on chests fail to realize that those “morons” are the ones providing the skin supply in the trading post. Capiche?

If everyone took that approach then ArenaNet would be forced to change the manner in which they offer new skins.

Already answered this a few posts ago. They wouldn’t. Anet needs the money to recoup the production cost of the game and fund further development. If no one bought those things then they would make them more enticing until people started buying them.

They can not afford to retire the chests since it has been proven that cash shop gambling produces a bigger revenue than straight up selling the items that would be otherwisde hidden behind an RNG wall. Most humans are susceptible to gambling. The only question is that how much each individual is willing to risk.

That being said, I’d like to see more relationships in the game that are not romantic in their nature. Friends, comrades in arms and even rivals. People do not talk to each other with the sole purpose of getting laid. Throughout our lives we have far more acquitances, friends and enemies than romantic partners. I feel like the world of Tyria does not reflect that.

Actually, if no one bought them ANet would have to wise up and stop peddling RNG-chest gambling to people with weak willpower.

Not really. If no one bought them Anet would lower the price or add more enticing rewards to the chest’s loot table. If still no one bites then they would simply start putting Ascended items in them with the same drop chance as the skins.

After investing so much money into the game, they can not afford “wising up” since it has been proven that cash shop gambling not only works but brings in more revenue than selling these items directly.

That deserves no compasion at all, it’s like someone failing a math test, blaming the teacher for asking hard questions while they didn’t prepare for the exam, and then they go to the principal to complain about said teacher

Seems like someone fails at reading comprehension. Elrey did mention that their merry band of guildies tried to attack after it became clear that those morons will not cease the griefing. He/she(?) even enlisted the help of some friends outside of the guild and defeated the Obsidian Sanctum campers in fair combat.

Then the minute Elrey’s group tried to do the puzzle the trolls crawled back like a pack of starving hyenas and resumed their activity. It’s interesting that these PvP heroes did not come down from the puzzle even once to kill the jumpers but resorted to idling in one spot, spamming fears and knockbacks. Tells a lot about their skill level and intention.

Any place to grind?

This is very true. Grinding dungeons on speedruns yields somewhere around $1.25 an hour. Its just not efficient to grind if you have a means of disposable income unless you live somewhere that pays less than $1.25 an hour or if you find grind thoroughly enjoyable.

The thing is that if you take on extra working hours in order to get cash to splurge on virtual items you will do so at the expense of your gaming time. In the end you will have enough dough to convert a huge amount of gems for gold and buy a Bifrost off of the Trading Post but almost no time to log in and run around with that Bifrost.

If there’s no viable way to make a moderate amount of in-game currency by just playing the game, people tend to lose interest. That being said, Guild Wars 2 seems to walk a fine if rather thin line at the moment. You can earn a sensible amount of gold through dungeons, champion zerging, node harvesting, mass farming mobs through big events and trading post speculation.

Renown hearts, jumping puzzles, exploration and regular events could benefit from a bit of a reward lift though. Hearts offer a very pitiful monetary reward if you compare it to the current economy. I assume they used to be more in line when the game started and there was no inflation. Same thing goes for events.

Jumping puzzle chests and hidden chests should reward you with a sum between 20 and 50 silver, depending on the difficulty. Especially since the hidden chests are usually gated behind multiple veterans and a champion so you have to get others to come with you while the jumping puzzles require more skill than zerging an overgrown monster.

That’s my two cents about this but I’m no game designer or economy expert so take it with a pinch of salt.

Skritt Burglar, Champion of the Hearts

I discovered the skritt burglar by accident while fleeing from a champion spider and stumbling upon a pile of clickable rubble in Metrica Province. My guardian was two levels below it at the time and sported a hammer (so almost no ranged skills) which resulted in me chasing the skritt through half the map before finally managing to kill it and complete the event.

I don’t think it transforms you while running. I got turned into a siamoth when I clicked on the rubble and it spawned. But not during the chase despite the fact that I was alone and it lasted a very long time. So much so that I was worried that I will fail the event.

I feel like my character has turned into Tony Abott.

[Suggestion] Adding More "Skill Shots"

The thing is that it is difficult and frustrating to use those kinds of abilities in the heat of the battle. At the moment I’m practicing staff wielding on my guardian and the fifth skill is more trouble than it’s worth.

I have to spend long seconds correctly positioning the line before casting while the enemies casually maul all of us to death. While most skill shots don’t seem to be so complicated as this one, I find the aiming system a bit of a hassle when we are urged by the game to be constantly on the move.

Server and class choice?

Thank you everyone for taking the time to answer!

I took people’s advice and spent time creating one of each class and experimenting with them. To my utter suprise, I fell in love with the one class I never imagined that I would like as I have avoided paladin archetypes my whole life. I tip my hat to you, Arenanet. You made me main a Guardian.

In the end I did roll on Tarnished Coast and after visiting the city for the first time I looked around chat and found the greatest guild ever. I’m only level 6 but a bunch of them came to the starter area to get downscaled and do events together with me and then we did costume brawling with quaggan potions and jumping puzzles.

Here is a picture of us at the end of Morgan’s Spiral.

Thank you for the answers everyone!

Just one more question, if I may?

I’m faced with a long list of servers, some of them with the European and others with the American tag. I am playing from pretty much the heart of Europe. Would it cause any issues to pick an American server?

Since someone mentioned Tarnished Coast being an unofficial RP realm, I’m interested in giving it a go.
