The old hint completion achievement is actually obsolete as they had replaced it some time ago, perhaps they automatically give credit for it now?

And a possible explanation for having that helm skin is if you chose to start with a helm on your character creation, I know some classes allow for that.

No, just the Daily AP (Which includes the now obsolete monthly) is capped. That cap is 15k.

Permanent points are NOT capped in any manner whatsoever, and contrary to it’s name the permanent category includes many points that were only temporary and no longer obtainable. If you missed those temporary points, they are gone forever and therefore means you can never reach the top of the boards.

LS1 might come back, and when they do they might bring back the achievements. Even if LS1 is brought back, there is still a ton of festival achievements that will very likely never come back. This includes previous Halloween, Wintersday, Festival of Winds, stuff like that.

There’s even been some achievements that have been outright retired or removed, so if you did not achieve them while they were available you are missing out on those ones too.

This mini has already been “in-game” for a long time, just not obtainable, though it’d make a lot of sense to release it during the Lunar Festival. People were showing off a few head skins as well that are speculated to be on the gem store next week, so maybe they’ll sell the mystical dragon too.

It is literally impossible for new players to catch up to the top AP leaders unless a couple things happen:

ANet has stated that they’d like to rework LS1 and bring it back, but that is low priority. To even the AP field they’d also have to bring back the associated achievements.

But there is also the issue of past seasonal events that I doubt they’d ever bring back, you miss those achievements and they’re gone forever.

The daily and monthly cap are combined into a 15k cap, though new players will take significantly longer to catch up as the rate of AP acquisition currently is much slower than in the past, but there is the benefit of the current implementation being significantly less effort, whereas in the past we had to spend upwards of 2-4 hours per day to earn all AP.

The daily and monthly achievement points have a combined cap of 15k. Everyone will get there eventually.

However, there are many “permanent” AP points that are no longer available, namely those from all the temporary LS1 content and past seasonal events.

The reason people are complaining is because unbalanced matches are unfair and frustrating, and with absolutely ZERO reward for loosing it is a waste of time when you are on the losing team.

There is no incentive to balance out, as volunteer doesn’t give you an auto-win, so players that were on the winning team that get team swapped get mad and leave to join a new, fresh match rather than stick out one that is going to lose.

There’s a couple problems in Dragon Ball right now that are coming together into a larger issue.

1) There is no reward for losing, as such people leave when a win doesn’t look achievable
2) When people leave this triggers auto-balance, and right now volunteering does NOT count for a win, so no one wants to volunteer
3) Anyone who gets forced to switch over will simply leave as again, no reward in being on the losing side
4) This ends up being a repeating cycle for a lot of matches
5) There is also the balance issue that it can be difficult for a team to bounce back from a few deaths as the other team can be camping them with full upgrades

Crashing Issue

One more update just to say that I have not had any crashes since turning off the Steam overlay, so it seems between that and buying a new CPU cooler managed to get rid of my crashing issues.

I had an unrelated issue with internet hiccups too that I knew was not ANet’s fault, been working with my internet provider on that and we think it’s resolved, but have a tech coming over in an hour or so just to make sure that everything is all good. I love my internet provider : )

So between the crashes and hiccups, hopefully my game experience will be rock solid!

Now that I have a good cooler too, I’ll look into doing some overclocking of my 2600k, that should give me a good performance boost.

Slyther.1297

Update!

I bought a new CPU cooler which brought down my temperatures to well within safe levels, compared to before I’m now idling around mid 30’s with max load putting it to around 60.

However it seems that based on anecdotal evidence (Bear in mind I’ve only had the new cooler a few days now) that I may have had more than one cause for the crashes. My game seems more stable now, not crashing anywhere near as frequently before, but I did crash once last night just after Vinewrath had finished.

I should also mention that most of my crashes before would freeze the game, but this was one of those crashes where the game continued to run even with the crash prompt on screen. This “soft” crash, as I’ll refer to it as, is the one that’s been plaguing me for years and seems to pop up randomly. The hard crash had been a more recent development, which suggests to me that the hard crashes were in fact related to the CPU overheating.

I have no idea where to go from here.

The only possible conflict I can think of is that I do use the Steam overlay while playing, I’ll play the game for a bit without the overlay and see if that does anything, but other than that I am at a loss.

In the case the issue is not heat related, what other advice would you give?

-There is no crash.txt file on my computer (Search turns up zero results)
-I use Windows 7 64-bit
-I highly doubt it’s an oom issue, I rarely see GW2 go past 3 Gigs used despite having all graphics options maxed out. There was even one occasion several months back where I had some kind of memory leak, and GW2 pushed 5 Gigs (90-95% of total RAM used) and still didn’t oom.
-I did on one occassion turn down model limit to about medium or so and still did eventually end up crashing, I wasn’t willing to go any lower than that because I still wanted to see what was going on in WvW. My system is able to handle max settings, I built this system a few years back for that purpose.
-The CPU cores are actually rated for 98C, with ranges between 65-85 acceptable for normal loads. Even with stock cooling I barely go above 70 in GW2. It’s the TCASE rating that is 72.6, and that seems to be a very difficult temperature to get readings of. Either way, I do plan to buy an aftermarket cooler to bring down the temperatures in general, and perhaps do some overclocking once I make sure my system is stable.
-The Prime95 program I mentioned for CPU testing also tests RAM as well, however as I mentioned the heat it causes is a little worrisome. Sure the cores only get to low 80’s, but the “package” reading in HWMonitor which I assume to be the TCASE reading also gets upwards of 80, which is why I shut down that test right quick.

Crashing Issue

Slyther.1297

I’ve had a crashing issue in GW2 that has been plaguing my game experience for years, and I have yet to be able to pinpoint the issue. GW2 is the only program that crashes on me where I have not been able to find a fix.

This crash only occurs while in zerg events, either in WvW or large PvE events such as Vinewrath.

I sent a crash log with my last crash, if support staff looking at this are able to access it and it’s error log. Unfortunately it seems the screen cap I took didn’t work. I remember it mentioning stuff like unable to load certain projectile effects and such.

I am posting here to see if I can get some help resolving this crash.

Computer specs:
Intel i7 2600k CPU, stock speed and fan
2x AMD Radeon HD 6870’s in crossfire
8 Gigs (2×4gig) GSkill Ram
Gigabyte motherboard
MX100 SSD

I have already done some elimination work:
-It is NOT an installation issue. I replaced my harddisk about 6 months back, and the crashing issue was not resolved.
-It is NOT a RAM issue. I just ran Memtest for over 13 hours and it came up with 0 errors.
-It is NOT a heating issue. I have a large HAF case as well as the fact that at the time of crashing none of my components were anywhere near close to overheating, in fact this latest one my CPU was in the low 60’s.
-My CPU, although capable of overclocking, is running on stock settings. I tried putting it through a stress test as well using Prime95, but immediately shut it down as it pushed its heat worryingly high, so I have not eliminated the CPU as faulty hardware. However GW2 is only program that has unexplained crashes.

Any help would be appreciated!

ANet, Let's Talk Achievements

Slyther.1297

Seems this topic has generated a nice discussion over the past couple days, and I feel it’s time to re-enter it to clarify one point that was made early on.

I don’t have a problem with hard achievements as long as they are permanently available, it’s the time-limited achievements that I was largely complaining about in my OP. The problem with temporary achievements is that once they are gone, that AP is forever lost.

Grindy achievements already exist, like many of the PvP activities that are on rotation. You don’t hear many complaints about them because they are permanent and can be picked away at leisure, there is no pressure to get them done.

I’ve made the decision to cap out Bell, Wonderland, and Toypocalypse, as they are actually somewhat sane, which means I’ll only miss out upwards of 15 of the available 65 AP associated with the grindy achievements.

ANet, Let's Talk Achievements

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Slyther.1297

Slyther.1297

I feel it’s finally time to voice my thoughts regarding this aspect of the game, as for every step forward ANet takes, they seem to take 1 or 2 backwards somewhere else.

-Background
First off, some brief background. I’ve been playing since the 3-day head start, picked up this game because it did away with many of the issues I had with other MMO’s I had played in the past. I got hooked, I was a day one player, and so I made the decision to invest myself in the game I had become loyal to and become an Achievement hunter.

A brief look at other topics suggests that many other Achievement hunters (Referred to as AH’s for rest of post) are also growing frustrated, and so I will begin outlining some issues.

-Daily
I will start with a small issue first, and one that affects everyone and not just AH’s, and that is in regards to the new Daily system. I will say the concept is great and sound, but you have done away with choice with very specific requirements for the achievements. What happened to “Play how you want?”, why do I have to go to a very specific zone for PvE events now rather than just a region? Why do I have to play a specific class in PvP? The concept is great, the implementation was a step backwards however…

I do however have to say thank you for lumping the AP reward for completing the daily, and although already daily capped for quite some time now I do know what it was like to grind out all the daily achievements.

-Grindy Achievements
Grinding is not fun, and the recent trend of including some extremely grindy achievements that are in addition only limited for a very limited time is worrying! Let’s take the current example of Wintersday, which includes four of these!

-Bell choir, 3 AP/30 songs for 20 AP total, 210 songs required
-Toypocalypse, 3 AP/30 rounds for 15 AP total, 150 rounds required
-Wonderland, 3 AP/15 completions for 15 AP total, 75 completions required
-Snowball, 3 AP/30 rounds for 15 AP total, 150 rounds required

That is a massive amount of repetition for achievements that are only available for a limited time! It’s the Holiday season, people are busy, spending time with family, friends, people still need to work… it’s a lot of time to dedicate to getting the AP that will be gone forever, and I don’t think it’s worth the time any more.

On top of that I did all of this grinding last year! Why do I have to do it again?

Lunatic Inquisition had the same problem too, same grindy achievement that was reset. I actually couldn’t bring myself to repeat that grind, and that was 50 AP I sacrificed in doing so, AP I will never see!

Temporary time-sink based achievements need to stop, or if you insist on keeping them make it so they roll over year to year without resetting! At least that way people would have the opportunity to pick up on previously available AP.

There are other aspects of the system and recent changes I have discontent with as well, but this post is running long as is and I feel the above two areas are more deserving of the attention for now.

Summary, grindy time limited achievements aren’t fun, straying from ‘Play how you want’ is a mistake.

A quick glance at the wiki shows that RGB is the current model, whereas RBY is used in either art or as an older model of primary colours.

I do believe RGB is more universally accepted, as that is the colours the human eye actually sees. With that my original post still stands.

Edit: Looking more in-depth shows that it’s actually additive versus subtractive methods. Overlapping light is additive, where RBG produces yellow, cyan, magenta.

Erroneous Collection Unlocks

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Slyther.1297

There’s two issues with collection unlocks.

The first is already mentioned in other threads, including one I replied to. Basically some unlocks are not registering. This has messed up my Set 1 Mini’s achievement, leaving me at 53/54 as my Mini Risen Priest did not seem to count toward it.

The other issue is that I’ve gotten credit for items that I do not have. An example is that the only Black Lion weapon I’ve ever bought was a Jade sword, and yet I have a mix of about eight different BL weapons unlocked in four different categories.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Slyther.1297

Slyther.1297

One observation about the new tag colours is the absence of green, which baffles me a bit… Green is a primary colour and it just seems logical to include it as an option.

In my opinion having a fifth colour would also seem ideal, as there have been a few events that require five or more groups. Green in particular seems to make sense as well as the three way WvW battles also reflect the primary colours of Green/Red/Blue, and a green tag could see some great use in WvW battles.

Minis not counted correctly for new achieves?

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

You keep the AP from the retired achievements, you now have to account bind the minis to get the new, reset collections.

But I am having issues as well, Had 54 minis for Set 1 however the Priest of Balthazar didn’t register for me, leaving me at 53/54… The other two sets were fine however.

So I’m currently missing out on 10 AP due to this bug.

It’s also very annoying that the achievements do not show which minis you actually have, making them inconsistent with the other collection achievements.

2 major and 1 minor bug I noticed while getting a couple achievements off my almost completed list.

Major 1: The immobilize effect disappears for a few seconds before the game starts, allowing players to pick up weapons. This gives free kills/points.

Minor, related to above: If you are killed before the game starts you are not effected by hunger until the stacking begins taking effect, effectively giving the advantage of 1 less hunger stack compared to the rest of the players.

Major 2: Some runes work in this mini-game as I accidentally found out. In my case I use krait runes and any time I used camoflauge my on effect use would activate, essentially instantly killing any players around me.

This does nothing for AP hunters. Those players with nearly every achievement already done will have almost nothing to work with to earn their AP chest rewards.

AP hunters have been around a lot longer than the chest rewards have, most of us do it either for the sake of completion or to be competitive on the boards. For most of us falling in one or both of those groups this is a huge relief

Feedback: Max Daily/Monthly AP

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Slyther.1297

Slyther.1297

AP hunters have been asking for QoL improvements for a long time. Dailies are a huge part to being competitive on the boards that it’s extremely punishing to miss out on points that can never be earned again, every daily missed is a point that can be never made up.

This reason alone is why a lot of AP hunters like myself felt like we had to spend 2 hours every day grinding all the dailies, because if we don’t we start slipping on the boards.

Of course there’s other reasons too, doing all the dailies meant that we got to the next chest faster, meaning more rewards.

The implementation of a cap is a huge joy and relief to the competitive AP community, most of us have been asking for QoL improvements for a long time. With this cap we no longer have to grind dailies, we can eventually make up the ‘lost’ points down the line. Most of us are near the cap anyway, so we’ll be able to truly play how we want instead of an unfilled daily panel always gnawing away at our minds.

Slyther.1297

Awhile back I made a long and detailed post about the daily grind a lot of AP hunters face, and many other AP hunters have been asking for quality of life changes to the system for a long time. It was a small hope, and never did I imagine ANet would actually listen!

Skimming over a few of the other AP threads it seems there are two reactions to this; joy from competitive AP hunters, and ‘anger’ from most other people. To the non-AP hunters I will say that you will not have to worry about any loss of reward, you’re not going to hit that 10k daily AP cap any time soon. In fact most AP hunters, the people who have grinded out most dailies every day since launch are just approaching that cap now, it will be a long time before non-competitive AP earners catch up.

As an AP hunter (~109 on NA as of this post), and I’m sure many other competitive AP hunters will agree with me when I say this, we thank you! No longer do we have to spend 2 hours on dailies, no longer will we dread missing potential points. The merge is a huge plus too, allowing us to truly play how we want!

This singular change is helping renew my love for the game, I’ll be able to play the content that I want, when I want, without that daily AP panel demanding to be filled in.

Do raiding base events scale?

in WvW

Posted by: Slyther.1297

Slyther.1297

While when I was in Beta the events Did seem to scale, it doesn’t seem to be the case after it as I’ve seen keep bosses in EotM falling in less than 20 secconds by a super zerg. They ether removed the future or it’s not working properly.

Tyler has already replied to confirm my post, but I can also tell you from experience the scaling is definitely present, especially noticeable on certain objectives. For example I can face tank workshop with no issues with three people present to take it, but as soon as a zerg shows up I start taking massive damage. Another example is Arid Keep, the AoE fire hardly hurts when a small group is fighting the ogre champ, but does massive damage to a mega-zerg.

As for the HP EotM bosses survive a lot longer than normal WvW bosses do against mega zergs, HP does scale at least to a small degree

As long as your gear is up to date you should be fine, you’ll just be lacking trait points that level 80 characters have.

The only reason we held Thunder Hollow at the end was because I set up defensive siege beforehand, it was the only place we could make a stand. We couldn’t even venture out of our keep much because you guys had roamers every where.

Joining blue or green would have served to have a more even fight, rather than red having 80%+ of the map most of the stream.

More daily - are you kidding me ?

Slyther.1297

Gotta say, you AP hunters make a decent argument, I’m starting to see where you’re coming from. It’s very easy for the vast majority of us who don’t AP hunt to have no problem with daily AP cap, because odds are we will never hit it anyway, so who the heck even cares.

Thank you for seeing this.

Where you lose me, and most other people in this forum, is the fact that this is a chosen gaming lifestyle.

I can’t speak for all AP hunters, and you know what, some are requesting changes that I do not agree with. I don’t want to limit the rest if the player base. The changes I’m looking fro should only be noticed by the AP community. Much like I would expect PvP changes to only be noticed by PvPers.

Yes, this is a chosen gaming life style, but I picked GW2, out of all the games I could have picked form. I picked it back during beta for specific reasons. If back at the start of GW2 there would have been 2+ hours of dailies to do, i would NOT have chosen to compete on the AP leader boards. I those to do this at the time, although there wasn’t actually a leader board, because dailies were less of a grind for all daily AP. I believe most of us at the top of the boards can agree that grinding out daily AP was not what we were expecting to do.

If the changes to the dailies are suggested in a way that they will not affect you, please do not deny the AP hunters a QoL change just because you think poorly of us.

Ewon you are spot on with a lot of my grievances of how dailies have evolved over time. You’d probably be interested in reading my suggestion thread where I explain this point in a lot of detail. https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/suggestions/Daily-meta-for-AP-hunters-sanity/first#post3310151

Many AP hunters made the choice to do so at the start of the game when dailies took only 20-30 minutes to complete. Although the AP at the time was a little high and I don’t mind the reduction to 1 AP a piece, the time requirement has steadily increased and continues to do so as they add yet more dailies.

Once upon a time I could do dailies while playing the game how I wanted to play, now I spend 2-4 hours grinding as the completionist in me has to see them get done.

Letting people catch up with dailies.

in Suggestions

Posted by: Slyther.1297

Slyther.1297

Newbies will never catch the top of the leader boards due to past Living Story achievements. I’d like to see a cap in place for an entirely different reason, that of sanity. As a completionist the daily 2-4 hour grind is burning me out. Capping AP would still have everyone advance at the same rate, but dailies/monthlies would no longer account for 50% of most top AP scores. Not to mention I’d get a few hours back I could do what I wanted with.

Daily AP Cap

The problem is that newbies will never catch the top due to Living Story achievements that are no longer accessible.

I want an AP cap, but for an entirely different reason, that of saving our sanity. I’m a completionist, and the 2-4 hour daily grind is burning me out and not allowing me to enjoy the game how I want to enjoy it.

Capping daily AP means that everyone still advances at the same rate, and even places more emphasis on the actual permanent and Living Story achievements as dailies will no longer account for 50% of most leader board AP numbers.

More daily - are you kidding me ?

Changing the leader boards to exclude dailies/monthlies does not fix the completionist issue. As long as there are points attached to all dailies with no cap completionists like myself will be compelled to do them to achieve that next AP chest faster, get closer to that next title, etc.

This thread helped prompt me to finally make a suggestion over at https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/suggestions/Daily-meta-for-AP-hunters-sanity/first#post3310151

The short version is to add a daily meta, attach AP to the meta and set the dailies themselves to 0 AP. This way non-AP hunters see no change, while AP hunters can finally get a few hours back to do what they want. The 2-4 hour daily grind is really burning a lot of hunters out, including myself, the last thing I want to see is more time added on, which is what the new PvP achievements are going to do.
