All read is, Because World of Warcraft just hands you gear so people feel like they are winners. I think that Lazy people should be able to get the same gear as the people that Bust their Kittens off either
Crafting
Running Dungeons
or farming Karma

cause it is only fair that everyone is equal, cause we are in a day and age that no child is left behind, and even though this is making kids stupid we will still do it so A.Net should do it too.

Tell me how someone can bust their kitten off crafting or farming karma and acquire max stats in all equipment slots when Ascended gear comes out of exactly 1 dungeon and is untradeable.

Should max stat gear be easy to be obtained?

Snoring Sleepwalker.9073

Yes and no. People who play more SHOULD have the advantage. It’s silly to think any other way. But getting good gear so everyone can do content is also nice. But MAX stat gear easily obtainable for everyone? No. Maybe a 5% or 10% difference for gear that actually takes time to get.

Why should people with no lives outside of the game have an advantage over people who do ?

The fact is that even without a gear difference someone who plays 4 hours a day is most likely going to be much better than someone who plays 1 hour a day.

Most likely, yes. Guaranteed, no.
But even if it was guaranteed, why should their advantage be made any greater ?

Why should someone who has been playing chess for years get to start with more queens on the board when their opponent has never played before ?

Players need things to aim for and some players like those things to be stats and I can guarantee you that far more people will aim for the armor with an extra +5 stats and keep playing than the number of people who will leave simply because of the items presence.

But how many of those people that want the +5 stats will stay in GW2 over another game that does it better ?

The people who leave because of too much grind are much more likely to stay in the long term because there is no alternative game for them.

Which customers are more valuable in the long term ?

MMO’s aren’t made for casuals in mind, by design, not even this one. Nothing new here why are ppl surprised?

Because of these bits of pre-release advertising promising that GW2 would be different:

“Here’s what we believe: If someone wants to play for a thousand hours to get an item that is so rare that other players can’t realistically acquire it, that rare item should be differentiated by its visual appearance and rarity alone, not by being more powerful than everything else in the game. Otherwise, your MMO becomes all about grinding to get the best gear. We don’t make grindy games — we leave the grind to other MMOs.”

-Mike Obrien, President of Arenanet

Fun impacts loot collection. The rarest items in the game are not more powerful than other items, so you don’t need them to be the best. The rarest items have unique looks to help your character feel that sense of accomplishment, but it’s not required to play the game. We don’t need to make mandatory gear treadmills, we make all of it optional, so those who find it fun to chase this prestigious gear can do so, but those who don’t are just as powerful and get to have fun too.”

– Colin Johanson

Finally, since combat is such a core part of the gameplay of any MMO, we’ve put a lot of emphasis into rethinking combat. So much of traditional MMO combat is rote and repetitive. You execute the same strategy over and over again, just augmented over time with better and better gear. After a while it starts to feel like you’re playing a spreadsheet. Combat needs to be about making creative choices, and it needs to feel immediate, active, and visceral.

-Mike O’Brien

OH no! Don’t go there… now we will have this endless debate about GW1 vs GW2, mmo vs corpg. Omg, how could you do this! GAH!

As I see it GW1 wasn’t an MMO. However lots of players treated it as one, to the point where when someone asked for MMO recommendations, GW1 was given as an answer and nobody complained. So it was still a competitor to MMOs and attracted MMO players.

Thus the comparison is valid.

@Merthax.5172: grind for items always come with greater challenges and you still can change your build or use strategy to take down that challenge.

If you’re after greater challanges, why do you like higher stat gear ?
All it does is reduce the difficulty of all content.

nope. the game should be challenging.

How does high stats on your character make the game any more challenging ?

GW1 had no trouble making harder challenges, even though the gear stayed the same.

There should be games catering to both options. In the game i want to play? Definitely – i now want to play for fun, my times of grinding and hard work just to be able to have fun are long over. I don’t want to return to this anymore. I already have one work, and i don’t need a second one.

There are two groups here:
– People who want max stat gear to take lots of time to acquire
– People who want max stat gear to be quickly acquired

I don’t see how you can satisfy both groups. Especially when the first group are the people who will grind content they don’t like to get max stats, meaning they will look for the quickest path.

The closet you can get is to give the people who like grinding something other than stats to focus on. Which is the GW2 we were promised, quick max stats, long grinds for titles and cosmetic gear.

Well the Ascended Gear post was finally locked. over 11,000 posts and 222 pages.

Locked with a message telling players to refer to a statement made before we saw exactly how bad Ascended gear was. For example, we didn’t know about untradeable RNG drops being required until the items dropped.

I’m trying to think of a scenario where locking the threadnaught with that message won’t make things worse for ANET.

How about skins that ANET keeps changing ?

Changing them doesn’t seem too hard, just replace the files that say what it currently looks like with the new look when they patch. It might even work getting people to go hunting for skins when they see one and decide that they want to keep it, rather than risk waking up to a hated skin tomorrow.

The costs(chance) must be low(high) enough to allow us to think about getting them for multiple characters and builds, not just one.

Agreed. The important parts for acquiring best in slot get is:
– Lots of ways to acquire it. Especially for people who don’t stick to grinding one thing at a time.
– It doesn’t take too much time to acquire.

What about using the mystic forge to combine other dungeon tokens or dungeon tokens and other materials? So you can enjoy the other dungeons and still get top tier gear?

EDIT: Dungeons that already exist

That doesn’t help people who don’t like dungeons. It also creates a lot of work for ANET next time they introduce higher stats on items, as they have to change all the vendors. And it screws over people who don’t like doing things that produce tokens.

However almost everyone accumulates gold and karma. So making all stat combinations available through them works for almost everyone.

Putting runes on armor makes it bound?

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Snoring Sleepwalker.9073

Snoring Sleepwalker.9073

Didn’t you see the warning saying it would be soulbound when you upgraded the armor ?

Yeah, it’s probably so you can’t just put a rune on a piece of armor that happens to sell at a high price when it has that rune installed but is cheap otherwise (it happens).

Actually, it’s due to a limitation of the trading post. If an item can be traded, then the trading post needs to have a listing for it that will show up in search. If items didn’t become soulbound when you upgrade them, then the trading post would need multiple listings for every weapon/armor/trinket: One listing for every single upgrade that can be put on the item. Including all the stupid ones.

With bind on upgrade, they only need to list entries for the upgrades the item comes with on creation. So if the item only ever comes with one upgrade (or never comes with any), then there is only one listing.

How to get people to spread across all maps

in Suggestions

Posted by: Snoring Sleepwalker.9073

Snoring Sleepwalker.9073

Nice idea but why just stop at minipets?

Make a few things like parts of the legendary recipes only obtainable and bind on pickup from every part of the map, then people can pick them up while they do their 100% map completion, and not just buy them from the TB. Seriously, I think anyone who can get a legendary weapon deserves them and probably has the time on their hands for this!

That wouldn’t help. People would still leave after they have got what they are after, especially if they drop enough that you can expect to pick them up during map completion.

You need something that is going to keep drawing players back there even after they have everything they want from the zone. Which is why my suggestion targets farmers:
– They want coin, maybe karma. Probably to buy something farmed elsewhere via the trading post.
– They are predictable, thus they can be easily controlled. They will go to the most profitable farming spot. So my method spreads them out by automatically nerfing farming spots that become too popular, while buffing the unpopular ones.

Snoring Sleepwalker.9073

All the zone rewards should have the same drop rate otherwise the people will farm the less frequent ones

Then people would just farm the easy zones.

Lets go one step further:
– Every zone has a Magic Find value that affects all drops in that zone.
– Every week an algorithm looks at the population across all zones. Zones with higher than average population have their MF value go down, zones with lower than average values get their rate increased.
– The values are published on an official website for all to see.

As MF goes up the population of farmers in that zone increases, so it should spread the population out.

I like this idea. I don’t know how difficult it would be for the staff to keep up with it, but in general I think having different drops for different zones is a great way to attract people.

That’s why it would be an automated system. It doesn’t seem like it would be difficult to code.

No it isn’t. It would be insane too if it was done since getting to level 20 or so would require a LOOOT of time per week spent doing it in a burst.

Reseting would allow ANET to add another cosmetic incentive: A title given to everyone who reached the highest level obtained by everyone that week. Or maybe list their characters names on the login screen for everyone to show that, for that week, they were better than everyone else.

The amount of whining and garbage from ‘normal’ (laughable to call themselves that) players is completely out of control. There’re a few simple facts that you super self-entitled players need to wrap your heads around.

1) You purchased a game and got it as-is. What you purchased was what you got. The event this last weekend where a very small fraction of players got a precursor and everyone got exotics was NOT guaranteed to you by any means whatsoever when you purchased this game. It’s not owed to you. Period. You got what you paid for, everything else is EXTRA, not deserved.

We also paid for ANETs promises. Instead of filling those promises they nerfed everyone who isn’t willing to grind FOTM.

2) Fractals of the Mists is a single dungeon. All of the other ones are still around and perfectly viable. They didn’t somehow disappear or wander off or get closed or anything like that. Go play them and have fun. If they were fun before, but are no longer fun for you now, even though they haven’t changed, then the problem lies with you and your perceptions, not with the game.

The other dungeons got nerfed when they stopped being a viable way to obtain max stat gear.

Should max stat gear be easy to be obtained?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Snoring Sleepwalker.9073

I think no. That said, there should be gear that is certainly adequate for all content that is easy to get, which is currently true.

How can anything less that max stats ever be considered acceptable for PvP ?

Especially something with an 8-12% increase of all stats once ANET rolls out the full set of Ascended gear.

The problem with easily obtained max stat gear is that once people obtain it shortly after hitting level 80 they complain that there is no endgame content and nothing to do. Then they leave.

Let them leave. Plenty of non-MMOs make money with players who finish the game and stop playing till the next DLC/title in the series comes out. With no subscription fee, why can’t GW2 do the same ?

If they don’t come back, then I doubt it’s the lack of a gear treadmill that’s kept them away. Especially when these are the players that think max stats means they are done, even when there is a lot of content they have missed. For example, how many of them have even tried dungeon story modes ?
One time when I was trying for a COF story group, I got invited to an explorable group who couldn’t read*, then asked why I would do story when I could just skip to explorable. So I know those content skippers exist.

Better to keep the people who will actually do all the content.

*Why else would they invite someone saying “LFG Story” ?

WvWvW will never EVER be balanced. It is a zerg fest… and if you think a minor stat increase will effect that you are wrong.

Would you ever be happy if ANET decided to nerf a class, no matter how small a nerf, for any reason other than that class being overpowered ?

What about buffing a class that wasn’t underpowered ?

Because that’s what’s happened here. The people who can stand grinding FOTM have been buffed, which is the same as saying that everyone else has been nerfed. Before FOTM they were identical in stats, which means that they were clearly balanced.

It should be obtainable doing things we enjoy. I hate doing dungeons so I am at a huge disadvantage now in wvwvw.

They’ve already stated they’re gonna make obtaining Ascended gear possible for WvW… they just haven’t implemented it right away. Chill, I doubt your server will suffer because a handful of people have a piece (or all 3) Ascended items. Pretty sure it still takes a zerg and some siege weapons to take a point (other than supply depots maybe).

Why does it take them so long to make a vendor selling the Ascended items ?

2 – Currently, the difference between exotic and ascended is three equipment slots that offer a total of +5 stat points each (spread out over 3 stats). Hardly a noticeable difference.

10,000+ posts later and you still think it’s only a 5 point difference spread over 3 stats, it’s 5 per stat, plus the bonus from infusion on just 1 earring, the accidental legendary boost also shows it’s more than 5 per stat on the bigger pieces. No wonder the merri go round will continue to go around.

ArenaNet designers have stated that it will eventually be possible to acquire a full set of ascended items, and that the methods to obtain them will range from PvP to WvW to PvE to dungeons.

1 – Why do you believe ANET on this point, when the very introduction of Ascended gear made their manifesto a lie ?

2 – So ? The current situation is still unacceptable. Promising a fix “eventually” is unacceptable, since “eventually” includes “years from now”. At the very least, I want a timeframe for a fix.

1 – Why should I believe a bunch of doomsayers on a forum (that has had doomsayers for some time) over the company that has made two games that I am still enjoying?

Because the lie is quite blatant. The promised that rarer items would be different on appearance alone. Then introduced rarer items with higher stats.

Well, unless you chose to close your eyes so you don’t see the evidence of the lies.

2 – Currently, the difference between exotic and ascended is three equipment slots that offer a total of +5 stat points each (spread out over 3 stats). Hardly a noticeable difference.

The size of the nerf isn’t important. What’s important is that everyone who can’t stand grinding FOTM has been nerfed.

So what is so unacceptable right now that needs fixing immediately?

The availability of Ascended gear to people who can’t stand grinding FOTM. It’s a simple enough fix, just create a vendor selling the items. Make the skins ugly if you want.

One solution to the problem of higher stats than current Legendary weapons is:
– Treat Legendary weapons like HoM items. No stats, just a skin. So you can stick the skin on whatever stats you like.
– Whenever ANET raises max stats, everyone owning a Legendary gets one Fine Transmutation stone for each Legendary they own. Each stone is intended for sticking the Legendary appearance on the new max stat weapon.

Last time I checked anet was scaling the stats of legendaries upwards to keep them slightly better then everything else.

Since when have Legendaries had higher stats than other items ?

Also I know that ANET is scaling the stats upwards. Pity that is of no help to people who change builds when new stats become available.

Ugly Best-In-Slot vendors

Coin is obtained by nearly everything you do in game. Karma is obtained by nearly as many things as gold. So if we are to have as many choices as possible as to how we progress towards best in slot gear, we need to have all the best in slot items available for karma and/or gold. Preferably both.

Making everything tradeable on the trading post might seem like it would work. From my experience it doesn’t. For the stats I was after the tradeable armor I wanted was Khilbron’s armor. Over the time I spent gathering gold, I rarely saw the TP holding more than 10 of any of the pieces, often some pieces were sold out. With such a low stock, prices fluctuated as well.

To fix this there needs to be a guaranteed supply of all best in slot items. Which means a vendor selling them. To open up as many options as possible for acquiring them, the vendors need to sell them for coin or karma. I’d prefer both. Because there may be some players who don’t like PvE, these vendors need to be located near or in major cities so they can be accessed without forcing someone to PvE.

These vendors need to stock all best in slot items. That means every combination of armor stats that exists (if a stat combo doesn’t exist at the highest tier, the vendor should stock the highest tier that has this stat), every combination of weapon stats, every trinket stat, every rune, every infusion, etc.

When an item stops being best in slot, it gets removed and replaced with the best in slot item. So no minor or major runes, exotics only get stocked till ascended items replace them*, runes stop being stocked when there is nothing to stick them in*, etc.

*Unless it turns out that Exotic+Rune can be superior to Ascended+best infusions. Then the exotics and runes stay

Basically once you know your build, and have enough gold/karma, you can visit these vendors to acquire everything. If you don’t have enough gold/karma, you can still see how much you need. However, for items with skins, these skins need to be ugly. As in if there is anyone who likes wearing that skin, the skin needs to be altered. If you want to acceptable, grab your skin elsewhere.
Having ANET change the appearance of untransmuted versions each patch is another option.

You may have noted that I didn’t say anything about the items prices. That is intentional. There will always be different ways to get the best in slot stats, and some will be better than others. I’m not asking for this one to be the best option, just an option, so all I ask is that the prices are low enough that the Ugly Best-In-Slot vendors as seen as a viable option for people who don’t like the other options.
Maybe make the prices higher than they are in the trading post, just to keep the economy there running.

Basically, runaway inflation is bad for the economy as inflation means players have trouble affording stuff. Inflation happens when the amount of gold being created is greater than the rate that it’s being destroyed by gold sinks.

Most goldsinks eat gold at a fixed rate. If that’s lower than the rate of gold creation, you have inflation. If it’s equal or greater than the rate of gold creation, people can’t make gold, so they avoid the gold sinks until inflation is happening. If the sinks can’t be avoided, people quit the game.
The trading post tax is an exception because, as inflation happens, prices rise. That means the tax eats more gold, slowing inflation. Then it reaches a point where it’s eating more gold than is being produced, so you have deflation and prices dropping. Thus leaving you with the overall price level cycling around a stable point.
The exact rate controls where that point is, so ANET thinks 15% produces the result they want.

As for the sales tax being hidden ?
There is no excuse for that.

I understand the complaint, so I am not downing you, also keep in mind as they are AFKing out of the fight they are not receiving any glory. I tested this theory and afk one whole fight got 0 glory.

Yes I felt like a Kitten for doing it and I am sorry

If they don’t get rewards, why do they AFK ?

Why are farewell posts forbidden?

Because the people who make a big deal about leaving are usually going to return.

It’s the people who leave quietly that won’t be back.

Should max stat gear be easy to be obtained?

Easy isn’t the word I would use for max stat gear availability.

Agreed. A better word would be ‘quick’. Grinding doesn’t make something hard to acquire, it just makes it take ages. I wish the idea that making players repeat something they did perfectly the first time makes it harder would just die. The only thing it increases is boredom.

As it stands, some exotic stats were a bit to slow to acquire for my tastes. Not enough to complain about, but they could have been better. Ascended gear is much worse.

One Time Events: Keep Them!

There is no other way to get that many people together at one time to create an epic event. If you do it multiple times, people are not all going to show up at once, or far fewer. It might be possible to do it few enough times that there is a high likelyhood of filling an entire instance of the zone each time…since there were obviously a lot of overflows for this one.

Ever GW1 event filled multiple districts, even though they were every 3 hours. I see no reason why GW2 events won’t fill overflows, especially when overflows have people from multiple servers.

Once you have filled all the main zones and have multiple overflows, there is no way you’re going to get the event any more ‘epic’ because you already have more people than you can fit in one place.

Generally only about 20% of the player base is playing during the prime time (about a 4 hour period), where as the other 80% are playing at various other times. Literally with these one time events, they are missing a huge portion of their player base. There shouldn’t be one time events, they need to have them happen over several days and repeat several times through out each day. Arenanet shouldn’t be making content that literally a minority of their player base is actually able to participate.

Your statistics are 100% wrong. Arenanet already stated that they run events when they have the highest player concurency.

One time events are crucial to the games health. It brings players back to the game. Its a great system, and I would expect them to keep it in place.

Not necessarily. If the peak concurrency was only 20% of the population, you’d still have most players missing out.

Those who complain and are about to quit...

But I am not going back to Eve Online in the near future simply because the agony of the pvp death penalty still haunt me to this day

Your choice.

Though when I was playing I found that the the punishment for losing ships did quite a lot to mitigate any gear treadmill in PvP. Sure, there will be more powerful ships than you, but you won’t see many of them because everyone will lose ships. So you will eventually lose it (especially when your enemies decide to target the expensive ships first for flashier kill mails), so smart players fly cheaper ships that they can easily replace.

My plan when I go back is to try and get into a 0.0 alliance that replaces ships that are lost in PvP. Effectively removing the penalty.

Am I missing something?

No, but every single RPG, video game or table-top, has had stats and progression. It is not defined by this, but it is a part of what the genre entails.

I take it you have never played Dread. It’s a table top RPG built for one off horror sessions. There is no advancement there.
Instead of dice, it uses a Jenga tower.

If there is a programing difficulty, then ANET can always go the simplest route:
– Add a vendor that sells all the stats for Ascended items for reasonable amounts of gold. Naturally they would have ugly skins.
– Add another who does the same with infusions.

Now you can make progress however you like, as progress is just gathering gold.

That being said, yes i know this game isn’t what they promised, that is sad.
But at the end of the day i ask myself; do i enjoy playing this nontheless? Answer is, YES, very much so.

Breaking their promise is the big problem when the promise is a major reason why I bought GW2 in the first place. I don’t play other MMOs because I don’t like gear treadmills.

So adding a gear treadmill is a problem. Second only to the lie.

They deliver you pepperoni pizza but you’re allergic to pepperoni. Still kick him in the nuts!

You know, an allergy might be a bit strong an analogy. A better one would be that you’re a vegan and you ordered a vegan pizza from the only place that makes them. You pay in advance because it’s easier, and you have been buying them for years.

The pizza arrives and you find it covered in cheese. Then you get told that you shouldn’t complain because all pizzas have cheese on them.

surely enough copied of the game were sold around the asia-pacific to justify an oceanc server?

It’s not that simple. The events run simultaneously on EU and US servers, so I’d expect them to do the same on Oceanic servers if we get them. Then you need to consider guilds with Oceanic and non-Oceanic players, if the guild gets together on one server, some of them will be missing out.

Will the level cap rise / Will our gear become out-dated?

A level cap increase brings many design problems. One of the most obvious ones I can think about is legendary items. Legendary items are always supposed to be the best of the best.

There is a simple solution to that problem: Every time the level cap goes up, everyone who owns a Legendary weapon gets 1 free fine transmutation stone (or better if better stones exist) for each Legendary they own. Then, when they get the new max stat gear, they can transmute their Legendary onto it.

Frankly, I don’t see why Legendary weapons need to have stats in the first place. I’d have just made them work like HoM gear.

and a very high number of so-called “funny” skins (boxer gloves and etc), which I have never seen being used in game.

The reason you don’t see people using them is that, with the exception of one ugly armor set for each class, all the skins in the gem store are for town clothes. Nobody goes around in their town clothes, as you have to manually activate them, they disable your weapons while showing, and there are so many things that automatically switch you back to armor.

A cosmetic item that nobody gets to see is useless.

As for the RNG boxes, I don’t recall them having anything useful that is soulbound. Meaning that you could just buy what you want from the trading post and not worry about the RNG hating you.
