My main was a Ranger, I no longer play it, for me I stopped when I was trying to kill something and I seen a Guardian running in and wrecking the same enemy in like 5 seconds, the Ranger was so vastly underpowered it wasn’t funny, ( im sure changes have been made since, but it got ignored for to long, I lost interest in it )

Then Guardian became my primary char, but as Anet continued to nerf zone after zone, and FotM became boring with no loot etc, I moved towards WvW, I then noticed in there that Mesmers where destroying the place, so I thought I don’t have a Mesmer so ill roll one, about 3 weeks later, anet hit mesmers with the confusion NERF, ( wasn’t really needed but hey ) but I didn’t change out, I would say now my Mesmer is my primary char,

All in all I think its good to play different chars etc as they each bring a different play style to the same battle.

So, if something can kill something faster, or is more powerfull in some aspect of the game, you’ll play that?

For the argument sake, if Rangers would dominate, lets say WvW, you’ll ditch your Mesmer and play them?

Nope even when the engi class was extremely bad I was still playing it 28 grenades per mob and all.

Not one to bounce around.

i started at release with elementalist and kept it as ONLY profession.
i’ll rewrite it in short.

Is it fun to have evasive arcana reduced?
Is it fun to have rtl (class defining skill) nerfed to more than 150%?
Is it fun to have more risk and less rewards than most other professions (pve)?
Is it fun the mistform nerf in pve?

The answer is NO ele WAS fun.
PvP Patches made sure that it’s not only “adamantly uneffective” (cit by dev) but also boring as hell….

So why on earth knewing the class struggled in PvE they nerfed it anyway?

Ele curretnly is extremely unfun for me they killed the class i used as only profession since release….

I switched to mesmer being the other magic user profession but i hope they will stop their pvp non sensical balance…..

P.S. and fun Wyse i hope they understand that if i wanted to use few warrior skills on a hammer or a GS i would ve rolled a warrior that is insanely OP nowaday and getting buff after buff
as possibly 90% of pve population already did.

But, basically what you’er saying is that some skills got nerfed (some would state they were rather overpowered to be honest) and you are not having more fun with that class. Because, lets say, you are now not so strong. You’re mentioning RTL, so probably dagger-dagger specced. I did read a lot and D/D speccs were rather overpowered and almost unkillable. Watched a video were a guy was running from 10 people all the time, trolling them, they did not manage to kill him. Mist form heals etc.

So, you’re class got nerfed, you ditch it for a new one. Flavour of the month player. Wouldnt you say?

One thing got me wondering. I’m at work, kinda bored, and reading the GW2 forums. I personally play an elementalist as a main, and like to read the elementalist forums. I do read other classes forums too, but mostly general discussion one and the elementalist one. The thing I’ve noticed, there are a lot of players who leave their characters behind if those are not the top notch classes at the moment.

For example – if I knew elemetalist was such a fun class to play, I would never role a different one. I play a fast paced, dagger-dagger one, and it’s so much fun. I’m not that worried about the numbers. It’s fun to see big numbers though. Just the other day, I had a nice 8,000 crit on churning earth. Was su nice to see, but I would play my elementalist even if half of that was the maximum I could achieve. Keep in mind my whole set is not completely done, so I can expect higher numbers, but that’s not the point.

The point is, I see a lot of players who ditch a certain class (their main at that moment) just because it got nerfed or some other class is potentially stronger. Some would leave elementalist mains and role a new character just because it got nerfed or a warior is better at the moment. Better at what really? Pure numbers? One skill can do more damage?

Do YOU play that way? If you have a “main” and you like to play him, would you leave him behind if he got nerfed or is not that strong anymore, compared to some class/classes. For example, if your warior was nerfed, and thief got a nice buff, would you reroll or play an alt just because of that?

I know I wouldn’t. I enjoy the playstyle of the class more than just the high numbers or how fast I can clear COF1 (6 or 7 minutes) in a speed run.

I play an elementalist, cause its fun to play, for me at least. Do you play your class because it’s on the top of the ladder or because you like it? Will you reroll if you get nerfed?

Hi, just a quick question. I’ve been to Southsun Cove with my level 46 elementalist. Needless to say, it was rather hard to kill mobs, even when I’m upscaled.

So, was wondering, when I’m upscaled, I get level appropriate loot? Specifically, I don’t get higher level crafting mats? As, I’ve been getting scales and such. Not the high level ones.

Thanks in advance.

Sword/Shield Build

As much as I would like to make Sword/Shield a fun way of playing Guardian, it just is not.

All you can do is auto attack, as opposite to other weapons where you can setup combo fields, do combo finishers, and basically, press more buttons.

Spiderwick.1879

All those replies are good, but the topic driffted a bit from the orginal idea. I was not talking about damage, what is the best damage weapon. I was looking at the weapons from the FUN aspect.

So, once again.

If I would like to not just auto attack or use 1 skill, I’m basically forced to go GSword. Potentially, Staff or Mace.

But, for an idea of a Sword and Board Guardian, that is basically, auto attacking.

Spiderwick.1879

What I would like to point out, for me, it’s not that much about damage. It’s more about being fun to play.

For example, when I run with a Gsword, what I CAN do :

- #1 chain has a wide arc, decent damage, procs might
- Whirling wrath is a nice aoe damage, also a combo whirl, when solo, can give cleansing or burning bolts
- Leap of Faith, gives a blind, combo leap, when solo, can proc fire shield or retaliation
- Symbol of Wrath, combo field, can proc retaliation, damage (that’s all not traited for symbols)
- Binding Blades, well, aoe damage/pull, combo whirl

When I run with Purging flames, Save yourself and Hold the line, I can do a lot of stuff alone. Put down combo fields, get some finishers. All that seems fun and you have things to do.

But, when I choose to play with a sword, basically, I can’t do much. I get no combo fields or finishers, aoe damage is low (I could live with that if it was fun to play).

I would so much love to run around with a sword and shield (I’m at work, I’ll put a nice picture of my guardian when I get the chance) but at this point it just isn’t fun apart from looking lovely.

Every picture on the forum, every time I see a “show yourself” picture (talking about Guradians now, other classes are not that far off, specially Wariors), I see Greatswords.

Most of the characters are using a Greatsword. Are you?

I’m really interested in playing with a sword and a shield, but if you compare it to a Greatsword, it’s just bad. Why?

I’m not talking damage here – I would gladly sacrifice damage to get more fun. Greatsword just has the best skills to use.

Imagine – you’re running, see 4 mobs, and you decide to take them down. Jump come near, use blades to agro all of them, put down a symbol, pull them in, jump-blind, whirling wrath, and they’re down. You can even put down a concecration to triger fire shield and burning bolts. Seems rather fun and decent. Used all your skills basically.

But, imagine doing those 4 mobs with a sword and board. Well, you got a fast attacking auto, which is nice, you got a 10 sec blind which is decent, and a nice nuke on #3 skill. No combo fields, no combo finishers, no nothing. Rather low fun.

Now, I just love the way my Guarding looks with a sword and board, really awesome. But, I’m being forced almost to play with a Greatsword. Something I just can’t commit.

So, any wise thoughts? Any fun ways (builds) to play without a Gsword and with a sword and board combo?

Spiderwick.1879

Hi, I don’t post really on the forums, I mostly read and try to get some useful information. Also, I like to see what new builds and ideas are people inventing, considering you’re able to play the game THE WAY YOU LIKE IT.

I do realize, “pros” and “top notch” players will always say this build is the best, gets you the best out of your class, but, still, this is a game, and we all would like to have fun, even if we’re not playing the most optimal build.

That being said, I play with a sword and a shield. From age of Knight Online and WoW I always wanted to play a heavy armor class with a sword and a shield. Mostly, that meant I had to be a tank. Luckily for me, and other people who feel the same way, Guild Wars 2 has enabled that for us. We can play sword and board or any other combination, without having to actually worry about being shunted or discriminated. Could you imagine having a warrior dps in your raid wearing a sword and a shield, just cause he loves that concept?

So, my goal of this build, or basically, my role in a group or world of Tyria, is to be a team player, but not dedicating myself to going full support. I would like to dish out some decent damage, be able to survive where more damage oriented classes wouldn’t, provide my allies some nice boons, and… use my sword and board.

So, this would be the link for my build (found this site for making builds, rather nice).

http://www.intothemists.com/calc/index.php?build=V8Fws-JGKFV10L3FGV90;9;6TJJ;458A17-58-OJV4;2AgkCrNYCa

As you can see, AH is there, emphasis on 2 shouts I use, boon duration, thoughness, giving some might, protection, regeneration to allies and such.

Weapons :

  • I use a sword and a shield, well, as explained above, paired with a hammer. Greatsword is rather nice, got some nice combo finishers, condition removal, but, almost all guardians I see are equipped with a GS, most warriors are… Never liked being as everyone else, even if that meant 10% less damage dealt.

Armour + runes :

  • My full exotic armour is not done, but, I would like to have a combination Power, Thoughness and Vitality, with some Precision. So, I’ve decided to use armour with Soldier and Knights stats (Jewelry)

Utilities :

  • Purging Flames : I love that skill, with improved concentrations, lasts 8 seconds, give’s a lovely combo field, removes conditions.
  • Save Yourself : well, really love that one.
  • Hold the line : boons.
  • Elite : supportive use.

Runes :

  • A combination for boon duration and might duration.

Food :

  • I’ve found some nice food, like Bowl of Lemongrass Poultry Soup for -40% condition duration, and Master Maintenance Oil for more Precision via Thoughness and Vitality.

My items are not all done, so I can’t state the exact numbers a combination of all this would give.

What I would like from you guys, is to point out the flaws, all the bad ideas of this build. It’s not meant to be the best, it’s not meant to give the best damage/support but it’s my own personal touch, my idea of a role I can take.

After all, it’s all about fun, not min/max numbers, at least for me.

Thanks

Let's play a bit - Your total played time

Spiderwick.1879

Hi all. Yesterday I was walking home from work, and was thinking a bit about GW. That morning I crafted my first rare items (level 35 armour and weapons). So, as I do read these GW forums a lot, I thought about played time. How much do I have. How much does an average GW player has, and so on.

So, let us do this. A bit of fun math.

This game is out for, lets say, 2 months. If we round a month to 30 days, that would be 60 days. So, remember 60.

A day has 24 hours, so that would be a total of 1440 hours to play over that period of time. So, if for 60 days, you ONLY played GW2 that would be a total of 1440 hours played.

But, considering some of us are humans, we need some sleep. If you sleep for 8 hours per day, that would be 480 hours of sleep in 60 days. So, that reduces the potential play time to 960. Seems a lot still.

But, some of us humans, even have to work. If you work for 8 hours a days, 5 days per week, that’s another 320 hours to reduce from the total potential play time. So, now we’re at 640 hours of play time.

Lets stop here, and do a small conclusion.

  • Let us presume, you are human
  • If you sleep 8 hours per day
  • If you work 8 hours per day, 5 days per week, with free weekends

= you’re potential play time for 60 days would be 640 hours. So, what is your total play time?

Now, lets complicate our life a bit. You sleep 8 hours, you work 8 hours. Now, you need to get ready and to work and back from work. Lets say that will take 1 hour of your time each day, 5 days per week. That’s 40 hours for 60 days. We’re now at 600 potential hours.

Now, you’re left with 7 hours of free time during the weekdays, and 16 hours over the weekends. Meaning Mon – Fri = 35 hours per week, and Sat – Sun = 32 hours per week.

In other words, during one week, you get 67 hours of potential game time. If you multiply this with 8 weeks (60 days) that would be 536 hours.

Another small summary.

  • You are human
  • You sleep 8 hours per day
  • You work 5 days per week, for 8 hours
  • You have free weekends
  • You need to get ready to work and go to work and back from work

= that would sum up to 536 potential hours to play GW2. Are you anywhere near this number?

Now, if you put social life, eating, showering, boyfriend/girlfriend, sports, family, etc, in the equation, where would you end up? Bellow 500 hours of potential play time during 60 days of GW2.

And I do hear some people have easily cracked over 500-600 hours. Do you know what that means?

If you work, all your spare time is used on GW (hope you do shower). If you don’t work, well, get a job. (a bit of humour)

Anyways, this is not a thread to tell anyone what to do with their time. Just a small brain excersise. A bit..

Thoughts?

I’m the consumer and I purchased not only a game, but a promised service as well. I shouldn’t have to alter my play style simply because they don’t want to change something that can easily be rectified in a small patch.

Maybe you should stick to Civilization.

Just turn the barbarians off and make sure to only have one rival on the map.

OH yeah, don’t forget to set it to easy.

To be honest, you should get a ban or something, as the OP just stated his feelings about the game. He was not rude to you, why are rude towards him? Are you a bully ONLY on the forums? Please, grow up.

The OP did state something – he likes more complicated, more, lets call it, intelligent games, that are not so based on fast pace, but on tactics, strategy. He obviously likes MMO’s and RPGS, but the industry is going in that direction. Pace. Speed. Even our lives are.

OP, hope you do find a game for yourself. Doubt any MMO will be anymore.

Seems like a build well worth trying out. Of course, anyone can modify it a bit, for their own taste and style.

What I would like to point is that GW2 is a bit different from the MMO’s we’re all used to. To a lot of aspects of the game we need to keep an open mind and adapt. Who would think that maybe a warior with a warhorn can be more deadly than a warior with a big sword or a big hammer.

Try not to treat GW as a typical MMO and maybe we all could benefit from that.
