Based on what you wrote, thief could be your choice. Leveling is rather easy, try it till level 20 to get the feel. Of course, full potential only really unlocks at max level, but take your time.

You can also jump into the mists and try some PvP and see how it goes. But, to be honest, you need to get accustomed to a class and play many games to actually be good with it and get the real feel.

Good thing about GW is that you can try them all, no need to rush to max level or anything. Just enjoy the ride. Try stuff.

After reading the new feature pack notes, I would like to put forward these 2 quotes for discussion:

“As part of the addition of the level-up guide, we’ve reevaluated the item rewards you gain for leveling and made them more exciting, relevant, and useful items. We won’t be able to retroactively give these rewards to existing level 80 characters, but all characters under 80 will use this system for their remaining levels between their current level and level 80. All new characters you create after this system will have access to all of these changes from level 1.”

AND…

“We’ve also taken this opportunity to go back and reevaluate the rewards of each of the major story chapters. We’ve done some pretty major overhauls to make the rewards for completing chapters feel much more compelling than they were in the past. Personal story chapters will absolutely be worth completing for your character as you progress. Similar to level-up rewards, we won’t be able to retroactively apply these to current level 80 characters, but all future characters you create or level up to 80 will benefit from this system.”

Is it just me or is this a huge kick in the Ging-Gan-Goolies? (A.K.A Male Genitals).
Basically, they are improving the game experience for new/returning players who have either never bothered with the game or previously quit (either with rage or boredom).

BUT for those who have patiently continued to play and stood by waiting for updates and supporting ANet via Gemstore and simply playing to keep the community alive, whilst biting their tongues (for the most-part) when wanting to rage on the forums, complain and have considered quitting… WE are the one’s who get NOTHING!!!

ANet all I can (very strongly) suggest is rewarding your loyal members with the part of the feature pack too. Perhaps those who have the “Loyal” Achievement and currently have lvl 80’s (of which I personally have 5 of them ankitten ot really in any such mood to level another character up until you give us a new race). You give them something for their continued loyalty to both you and your game!

A Unique Skin, A one-off limited addition Mini-pet, an Ascended armourset/piece, X-amount of Bonus Achievement Points… or some other WORTHWHILE item (just suggestions) I don’t wanna get greedy but you need to consider your active and loyal Playerbase who are basically being penalised for having joined the game and worked to level up before this feature pack…

Please see this youtube video link… This is EXACTLY what you are doing!

You’re crying about some green crap items? Oh boi..

It doesnt really matter for me because the characters I play already every trait unlocked from pve, but I thought the point of spvp was that you could buy the game, make a level 1 toon, go to the mists, and be 100% on the same footing as any other player there. Guess that was abandoned already.

I Spvp you have all the traits and skills, except the new ones.

Concept of trait hunting is really fun and sounds good, but not in the way it’s implemented now.

Maybe if they change it somehow, not sure how.

I’m leveling a new charactet, will buy the essential ones, but will hunt the rest, just to make leveling a bit different. I plan 100% map with this toon so will just come in the way.

Endgame beeing gemstore isn't good!

We all know they main priority is themselves. They NEED to make money in order to function and keep going. That’s all good.

Items in the gems store, as unlimited use gathering tools, boosters, stones, etc, that are really a convenience items, expanders and such. All that is okay to be sold. Even SOME skins or outfits.

But, a game that is based a lot on looks, but doesnt give you that much new skins via gameplay but via gemstore. That is a problem.

Maybe they could make a ratio – for every 2 skins they sell on the gemstore, they should make 1 skin to be earned via playing the game.

And farming is not a way game is ment to play. I know some enjoy that, but farming to get gold to get gems to get skins is not fun.

If some new sets dont come out in the near future, and are obtained doing some content and not via farming gold for gems (gem store purchase), I’ll prolly just quit. After playing from the betas, farming gold for gems to buy new sets is not my kind of fun.

I’m thinking of a possibility to swap out Arcane Blast for Arcane Power and modify your rotation to something like this:

RtL>Updraft>Burning Speed + Arcane Wave+Arcane Power> Fire Grab (crit!!! unless missed)+ Swap to Water > Frozen Burst + Swap to Earth > Ring of Earth

At this point, I should have stacked a fair amount of condi (Burning, Poison, Chill, Immobilization, Bleeding, Cripple) and would be ready to interrupt the enemy’s condi cleanse or heal. The next Earthquake would still be under ES effect, immobilize the target and I would cast Churning Earth at about 300 range for the final touch.

All of this is just a bit of theory crafting. I haven’t tried them yet.

You did all this, but what if the enemy dodges and then starts with condition aplicationon you and you just burned your water attunement for 1 skill?

So you go, RtL followed by updraft. Target is knocked back. You then swap to fire and use burning speed. Remember, you just burned air atunement, didnt use weakness or aura. Then, use fire grab for a big crit with arcane skills for burst and might stacks. No drakes breath or ring of fire. After that, you swap to water for frozen burst and follow by earth swap. You wasted water attunement for 1 skill, didnt use aura, and now are locked from it for 9-10 secs. You got 3 might stacks. You go Ring of Earth, applied conditions and want to use Earthquake to interupt.

All that is done really fast, but you burned your attuenements so fast, you wont have them when you need them.

That would be really great and fast if the target is a NPC who wont do much. But a decent player – he might know that when you RtL you’ll try updraft and swap to fire for Burning speed and Fire grab.

What I do – I try to surprise my opponent. Not always do the same. Just the other day, a guildie asked for a help and 1v1 so he can try his new build. I jumped in and went to duel. But, instead of charging in and burning it all, I played a bit slowly and tried to suprise him. Not waste attunements just for the sake of getting skills of cooldown. Think that confused him a lot, and he wasnt able to beat my not once.

Spiderwick.1879

Hi guys, just wanted to share my thoughts with you. I follow the forums, mostly when at work, and my main is an ele. I do check all other class forums and such.

Lately, I’ve been playing other classes. I like to mix it. My first level 80 was a guardian, then a mesmer, then I discoverd the ELE. Boy, was that fun. By far the most fun playstyle. I had tons of fun, done PvE, done fractals, done WvW, done PvP. I like to play all parts of the game.

But, me being myself, I wanted to finally level a warior (tried 4 times, gave up every time). And I did, and it looked great estethicly, done great damage. But the playstyle.. God, so dull.

Sure, you do tons of damage, you’re wanted in all parts of the game, you look great, but… So boring and the game becomes so easy to play. I refuse to play my warior anymore. Dumbdownes the game.

So, just hit me – why do I have to play a class that is the best in fractals, or best roamer, or frontliner, etc. I’ll just play my ele for one reason- FUN!

Maybe if distance ourself from big numbers and stacks and such, and see ELE what it is… it’s not the best, but, its the most fun class (for me at least). I’ll just continue and do my best and try to get the max I can from Ele class. Even if that means I could get 1 shot or stomped or whatever. I’ll try to prevent it, but hey.. Playing an OP class was never my thing. Always loved the underdogs. Maybe with some changes will be really good again.

I know some people like to be doing as good as the top class, and hate being killed easily, or whatever. I know there are issues with the elementalist class. I’m well aware of all the bad things.

But hey, it’s still a game, and I want to play a class that is fun not boring and making the game easy mode.

Good to be an elementalist.

Any point in going on the defensive side?

in Guardian

Posted by: Spiderwick.1879

Spiderwick.1879

Maybe. Some people are capable of it though I definitely am not.

The high armor “requirement” is mostly in the context of zergs due to the high number of incoming damage (and lag too!) requiring a buffer. I would say some buffer (thieves…) is preferred to avoid getting instagibbed, but in smaller groups and especially solo you need damage more. In zergs it’s ok if you hit like a wet noodle because you have many other wet noodles hitting. In a group of 50, you’re only responsible for 2% of the damage if everyone did the same. In group of 5, it’s 20%. Solo well, it’s 100%

This game isn’t balanced around 1v1 though. Some would argue not at all, but it seems optimized for groups of 5 in general.

On a side note, I actually think the meta dungeon speedrunners would actually be more proficient solo/small group (5~) wvw than most of the wvw zerglings due to reliance on “actively try to defend, via virtues, blocks, blinds etc” that you brought up. It’s pretty ironic given the scoffing most wvw’ers have for pve.

If I get hit for a lot of damage having more that 3k armor, and hit just a bit more, when I have lot less, well, it’s clear to go all out on attack and at least try to outsmart your opponent. Know when to dodge, what to block, when to blind, etc.

Guess, maybe the point of the game is not to relly on passive defense, but on active. Example, gear/weapons all on attack, traits most, then take some defensive utilities. Maybe as a guardian. I’m not sure.

Some are saying 2700-2800 armor is a sweetspot, getting more is a waste. But, why even get that if I still get hit by a warior for a lot. Compare that with a small health pool, almost each auto attack can take 5-7% of our health pool. Each auto. So, a chain would take at least 20%.

I’m kinda lost.

Like I said before in my last post, it’s about having the proper buffer. In large scale fights you cannot actively mitigate everything that happens to come your way thus passive defense is needed.

Passive defense and active defense aren’t mutually exclusive. They make each other more effective since you can’t trivially negate all of someone’s attacks if they have half a brain. And also, thieves…

And fights aren’t about just dealing with people’s autoattacks. You may dodge some, you may get hit, and you will heal. So lasting longer does matter. And there’s also burst damage that may just outright finish you off if you have no buffer.

In any case, going all out dps is certainly possible though it’s not as black and white and not to mention that 1v1 scenarios seem to be the exception rather than the norm in wvw.

As I said in the other linked thread, it’s not about conforming to some arbitrary armor value at all times though it’d be much suggested in zergs. Rather, try to maximize your damage without immediately falling flat. This is something you’ll have to find out on your own, most of what you search for on this matter is strictly anecdotal.

The point I wanted to make was, even with 3k+ armor, I was still getting hit for a lot of damage. Lets say, with 3k+ armor, and some buffs, I have 17k HP. If a warior does a full chain on his auto (1.4k,. 1.6k, 2.5k), thats 5,5k – that’s something like 30% (almost) of my HP. With 1 chain. With 3k+ amor.

Now, I know some attacks you’ll dodge, some you’ll block, move away, etc. All that stands. But, considering I geared myself to have 3k armor, would it be better to lose some, and in return do more damage. Maybe if I have 2.5k armor, the difference in mitigation (flat one) will not be so big, but in return I could have some higher offensive stats.

That makes sense?

I know WvW is not balance around 1v1, that’s not the point. I know in zerg, a lot of players (frontline) will be PVT and such, and wont hit as much, but still, I would like to know, if getting armor is really that important. No sure anymore. I heard a soft cap could be 2.6-2.8k and we should aim for that, and the rest go all damage.

Hey guys, just need a small advice. Is there any point in goin on the defensive side of the stats at all? Would it be better just to gear as as glass cannon?

Why? I was running in a borderland today, getting some POI’s on my guard, and I got attacked by a warior and a mesmer. I managed to outrun a mesmer, but, not the warior, of course. But the main point was, I have 3k armor, but I still got hit a ton by the warior. He was doing like 1.4-1.6 on his auto with axe, and around 2.6 with tripple chop, or whatever it’s called.

If he’s doing such damage when I have 3k armor, what’s the point really? Could be better to just go on full offensive, and actively try to defend, via virtues, blocks, blinds etc.

I have a warior, I know they are a joke, but still.

As Vol already stated, it’s not about the sprockets. Just the other day, on our guild Teamspeak, we we’re doing a dungeon and someone say, “Darn, I’m out of salvage kits!”. I’ve said how I love my Fed-O-Matic for unlimited salvages, and how it’s a great item. A guildy then said that someone did the math and you had to salvage thousands of items in order to break even on your purchase. But I did not buy it cause of the economic value, but cause of convinience. It was great for me and well worth it.

I think it’s worth pointing out that when the slavage-o-matic came out, silk and cotton were not worth nearly what they are now, nor was essence-of-luck in existence. In my venture towards “more magic find!” I’m pretty sure I’ve burned through a thousand or so blues/greens, and the materials I’ve salvaged from them are worth a decent amount (example: they aren’t the most valueable, but I have over 1000 mithril ingots just sitting around, and I’ve not gone to mine mithril specifically in quite a while. I get most of it from salvaging).
Of all the infini-tools in the game, I think the salvage-o-matic is the one that most easily starts to pay itself off.

I agree with you. I bought it for 25-30 gold, can’t remember now. Given the todays situation, well, what you said.

But again, it’s a matter of principle. I would rather pay monthly 12 euros and get all the stuff in game, than this Gem Store bullkitten. Picks, salvage kits, trans stones, they are all nice, when strictly used for convinience. But, all those armors, and such, that for me in unacceptable,.

I know forum crowd is a minority, in all games. Your average player will buy what they like, and will not worry about P2W or B2P or what ever X2X scenarion. He’ll just play a game and have fun. Maybe it will even be more cool if you’re pick has a another effect for him.

But also, that average player has a hard time doing the Marionette, and grasping what to do. Which is silly cause its kitten easy.

Case here, with this new pick (I have all the unlimited ones and I just love them) is that with a Gem Store item you’re getting something others are not. With the example above, it’s purely convinience. I hate to have lots of kits for salvage and it’s great. But, it’s not giving me an edge over others in any way. But with the new pick, you pay money (or convert) and you get a pick that has a bonus effect. Now, sprockets may not be highly valued at the moment, but that’s not the point.

The point, Vol and many others, including me, are making, is that this is a dangerous path they are taking. It will be a thin line to cross to go to the pay-to-win scenarios. I already hate that you have a lot of new armours on the Gem Store but they are not obtainable in game. That is rather annoying and if they continue to do that more, I’ll never buy gems with real cash again. Even might leave this game, even tho I enjoy it. It’s a matter of principle. I’m not here to be drain dry of my money, in a such way.

Today, sprockets. Tomorrow? Ecto’s? A kit that salvages ectos with a chance to get one more extra? Will you be upset then?

If I have to get a new keyboard, can you recommend one that is not expensive but support 3 key press or even more.

Thanks in advance
