BF3 is a more GPU intensive game. GW2 is a more CPU intensive game and some people that are overclocking and not telling us are getting BSOD and black screens and freezing not from high temps but CPU instability.

@Himmelweiss That’s really odd. I have the same setup but just OC the 3930k to 4.5ghz and I have two radeon hd 7970s at 1000mhz and I get like 50fps in big battles and 60-140 fps everywhere else.
Lying is the #1 cause of having 90 fps on an old computer.
I would go with the I7 but either way you wont be playing on ultra. Medium probably for playable fps.

Also, the reason you would get less fps in windowed mode wouldnt just be because of shadows but sli/crossfire does not work in windowed mode.

20 bucks he has the map open while he takes that screen shot :p
I play at 1920×1080 with all settings maxed including AA and DoF and I get 70-140 fps and 50-110 WvW and in cities. People who have adequate computers and still seeing low fps I think are experiencing ID 10t errors.
No errors, it’s the optimize for my card.
The prosecution rests, your Honor.

Deneroth has some great suggestions as well. Just proves there are multiple ways of being successful at soloing as a mesmer. Theres no one way to play it really. Depends on what playstyle you choose and what weapons and traits and skills you put together
Mesmer’s can be difficult to solo groups of mobs, but certainly not impossible. I use sword/pistol and greatsword. When getting a group of mobs on me, I try to line them up and use skills that damage in a straight line like Mirror Blade and phantasmal berserker which will also hit multiple enemies, and then you can use the illusionary wave to knock them all back. Then I switch to sword/pistol and use magic bullet to stun all of them and get up close and slash all of them with blurred frenzy, jump back and pick a target with the most health and put Phantasmal Duelist on him. Then I jump back, and switch back to greatsword, push them back and rinse and repeat. With ranged attacking in a group of melee, you can either moa bird them, and when they recover from that, you can also use feedback to reflect their projectiles back at them. You will have to also make sure to roll away when either of those are on cooldown and a projectile is fired at you, or if magic is fired at you, because feedback doesn’t effect magic.
Also when you get elite skills at 30 you can easily use the Series 7 robot to attack instead of using the moa morph to dish out damage to them for 40 seconds which is really handy solo. Make sure to put points into domination for bleeds and use any debuff shields you may have like the radiation field, I don’t remember its exact name.
I prefer to only take on 2 or 3 at a time if I can, and don’t grind by killing, but grind events and hearts.
Some of the elites you listed here are Asura specific and not mesmer specific.
You’re right. Sorry about that. I do play an asura so thats just what I use.

Whats your budget?
Dont have to. Check this link for comparison between intel processors vs amd processors on GW2. http://www.mmo-champion.com/threads/1186616-Guild-Wars-2-CPU-and-GPU-Benchmarks
Doesnt really matter how many cores you have. AMD processors are just slower than intel.
Its difficult to say. I would say about 30-40 fps on a laptop but it could be lower or slightly higher. Only way to know for sure is try it and let us know.
Free stuff is always good :p
Only thing that concerns me is you picked an amd cpu. Gw2 doesnt seem to run very well on them.
Oh and sorry for mistyped letters. Fat thumbs apparently on smartphone. Lol
Tri and quad sli/ crossfire will most times not provide any performance boost above having two cards because most games arent optimized for tri sli/fire. Having abobe two cards is more for tge enthusiast that wants giant benchmark numbers with little benefit in realworld gaming. Its for “kitten” sake.

I’m not sure it was stated in this thread, but in other FPS threads people complained that in beta the game ran fine and now they’re getting really low fps. Thats because they turned everything up. Didnt you guys hear about the stress test? The point of it was turning all the graphics up on the game and makibg it pretty once everything else was taken care of. That’s why the game runs slower for some of you with mid level computers. Im not saying there isnt something wonky going on, but a majority of people with mid level computers are having performance issues now because of them turning stuff up.

Why not just use Wine?
Because wine converts the directx calls that the game makes to opengl calls because only windows uses directx. Which would reduce the frame rate by half.
I wish there was a like button.
I agree but people seem to be confused by what minimum requirements means.
Imo the update wiki that arenanet provides is really crap if you want to know what they changed about the game from a technical standpoint. I wish they would have a little more transparency when it comes to what they did to raise or lower fps on any given patch. Also I agrer with others who have posted in FPS threads that the minimum requirements should be raised to more accurately depict what a system should be comprised of to run GW2 smoothly.
Well right now technically I wouldn’t buy an nvidia gpu for this game until you know for sure when they are going to release drivers. ?Nvidia has yet to release updated drivers optimized for GW2. I would definately get a second graphics card as well
No I’m sure Nvidia are just going to ignore one of the biggest releases of the year and just not bother. It makes good business sense to just pass it over. Infact I hear they are stopping driver releases altogether as another great business strategy.
True story.
Doubt there will be any releases any time soon.

There are some that have issues with i5’s and i7’s. I’ve seen a lot more people with AMD cpu’s on here that have a ton of problems with fps. Anyway, I just don’t think arenanet will do something that is a ‘cheap fix’. I’m sure they’ll figure it out. Majority of people who have fps problems are legitimately on low end computers though.

That was really cool for you to put that together for people ^5
lol. This happened to me as well, using phase retreat on mesmer, kitten me off because I had to end up running from another waypoint wayy far away
Nobody is experiencing 60 to 80+ fps in WvW unless they play at a really low resolution or play with everything on low, or they never see combat
I just think it’s a bad idea to start hiding stuff that would normally be visible, as it could potentially be game breaking. Just buy a new computer
Short answer – yes, it is normal
We need a hotkey that hides everything on the screen ^^ I think this will help a lot with fps problems.
If you have 1500 bucks, do it, I’d use anything as an excuse to put together a new computer :P amirite?
Time for a new computer me thinks.
:p Ill remember that
Gw2 runs faster for me after the patch so im not convinced that their complaints are any more than a placebo. Also a large majority of people having fps issues have video cards with 512mb or 1gb of vram, when the game easily runs over 1gb on my video cards.
Until the original poster gives their specs we dont know either way if their fps problem can be lumped into cry babies with crap computers that complain they cant run the game or people that legitately have a reason to gripe because they have high end pcs and still get lower than average fps.
You forgot to mention your specs
What good would that do?
Obviously the problem is not with his computer, nor with anyone else experiencing this low fps issue with a system that passes the minimum requirements. This is Anet’s problem, not our systems.
Ya whats a PCs specs have to do with performance of a game youre trying to run on it. /s
So I’ve linked my setup before on another thread, but for the sake of the conversation, I’ll list my specs again.
My system:
Intel i7 Sandy Bridge-E 3930k overclocked to 4.2ghz
32 gb Kingston HyperX 1600mhz
2x Asus Radeon HD 7970 Direct CUII cards @ stock 925mhz
Western Digital Velociraptor 1TB 10,000 RPM harddrive
I would like to note that I have everything checked and set to the maximum setting in GW2, as well as I’m playing in 1920×1080 resolution.
While I know I have an upper high end system that most don’t have, I too, had issues before the recent 12.8 (3) caps from AMD. On the current version of GW2 and the 12.8 catalyst drivers and 12.8 (3) caps I have a steady 80-100 average fps while questing, and that number can go up to upwards of 200 fps (if I’m obviously only looking into a corner while fighting). While in the middle of complex cities with a lot going on, I get 60-80 fps on average and I’ve only seen FPS below 50 in WvW, which at 30 to 40 fps when there are the maximum number of people on both teams all on screen fighting, is still very playable.
While I agree that for most people, more optimizations do need to be made (including some updated drivers for those poor nvidia folk) Things could be a lot worse. Rift, for instance, was my mmo of choice since it came out before starting GW2. In Meridian (the capital city of the Defiant) I see generally 30-40 fps, and even less if its full, on the very same system. Which is literally half the fps I get while in a major city in GW2, with arguably a lot more going on in GW2 cities.
I think the problem for most, even if they don’t realize it, is that GW2 doesn’t scale back very much on low to medium settings. That is to say that people who are having fps issues can’t set their game to low to medium and get much better results than if they set their game to max settings. This is a real problem for people with average or dated computers, as not everybody has 3500 dollars to blow on a gaming rig like myself.
I would like to point out that this game has only been out (excluding beta and headstart where the dev’s don’t make many optimizations but rather concentrate on bug fixes) for 3 weeks. Three weeks of graphical optimizations and new drivers and caps released by Amd has come a long way in a very short amount of time. For those of you having major FPS issues with medium to high end computers, like the OP, I do sympathize with you. All I can say is just be patient and hold on, and things will get better. For those of you with computers that are 3 to 5 years old, it’s very much a reality that you may have to invest in a better computer to get the results desired (especially if you’re a big pvp’er and want all the WvW goodness you can get your hands on). Computer games and MMOs are making drastic graphical leaps that require exponentially more powerful computers to run them. PC’s aren’t like xbox 360’s or playstation 3’s that you buy once a decade and play all the games released for them at 30 fps at least. Those games are engineered specifically to those hardware specifications to get the most out of the hardware as possible without losing FPS. MMO’s especially, are just not built this way. While I agree that on low to medium settings you should see FPS gains much higher than you currently are getting, at this point in time, I don’t for see you getting 50% higher FPS gains without investing in a new computer.
Also please stop comparing GW2 to the likes of Battlefield 3 or any other game that uses very little CPU power and much more GPU. GW2 does use its fair share of GPU, but if you don’t have a decent CPU, GW2 will leave your computer rocking itself in the corner sucking it’s thumb.
Took a bit longer than expected.
Newegg changed their combo’s so had to find new ones.http://i45.tinypic.com/oqjfyg.jpg
There is a $15 off promocode on the cpu so the total is just under $700.
The website is newegg.com
Thats a really nice build for the money. Definately agree with X
@Porreboy Your cpu may be the bottleneck in your system for this game at least. The 670 you have should run GW2 just fine over 60fps on the right settings.

How are you cooling your cpu? Water cooled or fan and heatsink? The noise could mean a fan is starting to go bad and it sounds like your pc is overheating.
@himmelweiss ya me 2, but 100mhz higher clock and 3 more mb’s of l3 cache wasn’t worth $600 dollars for me
@himmelweiss :o nice system. 3930k ^5.
It really annoys me that people say “…but I play BF3 just fine, why cant it play guildwars 2?” Because its not battlefield 3. Its an mmo that uses a lot of CPU power and not as much gpu. Just about every mmo out there is like this, including GW2. Also everybody thinks they have a really high end system when they infact dont. You have a middle of the road system now not a high end and youre playing the game at middle of the road graphics.
2600k @ 5ghz still makes this game chug. Although his system is not high end, high end systems are still crippled by it.

Also, you are using a gpu from Nvidia and right now it seems that the amd crowd are getting higher fps out of this game than nvidia people. I dont know why, but thats how it is.
You can run GW2. You have a low spec computer and this game is an MMO, which is really hard on your processor (You have an i3, not i5 or i7) and a ATI Radeon HD 4670, which is a mid-range card that came out 5 years ago. What did you expect?
I agree with draeath, the minimum requirements are in fact the lowest specs that you should run the game at. It’s not the lowest specs you can run the game at 45-60fps. The minimum requirements are correct.

Crossfire/SLI is supported in Guild Wars 2. The only thing I can think of is if you are running the game in windowed mode, crossfire will not work.
