My advice is to get a good water cooler and jack that kitten up to 4.5ghz and you’ll be getting a lot better fps in WvW. If you’re not comfortable with setting up an open loop water cooler, check out the h80 and h100 from corsair. Both will keep that cpu cool at 4.5ghz easily.
/ 2x XFX R9 290x in Crossfire
I would check the temps on your video card and cpu. As well as is your cpu overclocked?
/ 2x XFX R9 290x in Crossfire
What was your old card, rabbid? It seems a little premature to buy a new card, get blue screens and then blame the card.
/ 2x XFX R9 290x in Crossfire
Lol. New drivers? The 7970 has been out since like what January? The 12.11 beta drivers are the newest drivers. Did you try those?

Is there any noticeable fps changes between win 7 and 8 for the people who upgraded?
/ 2x XFX R9 290x in Crossfire
Have you downloaded the newest 12.11 drivers from amd?

get a desktop…considering some of the best desktop computers are having issues with the game you’d need to get something that would cost considerably more than 3000
or just have realistic expectations of what a laptop can do.
oh there are laptops that would do it…..but the battery is essentially a ups to power it down. and they cost upwards of 5k
3000..sadly won’t get you much in a laptop, sure it will come with over sold sales pitch and you forget they are all mobile components cut down versions of their desktop counterparts, less shaders less rops less of everything.
spending that much money, really look closely at what you are getting at the very least, shop around and make kitten sure your getting something that has decent cooling.
The desktops that are having issues are not high end :/ Desktops dont automatically equal better than laptops. Some laptops are far more powerful than desktops.
/ 2x XFX R9 290x in Crossfire
“will still leave it in the dust for less then 1/3 of the price for the whole system.”
Right. You are completely innocent of being a kitten.
/ 2x XFX R9 290x in Crossfire
Oh and the originpc laptop will be about 3080 dollars with a maxed out overclocked cpu and two gtx670s which will play this game at max settings. And it will cost 1000 dollars less than the m18x and be more powerful. I would definately go with the origin pc.
/ 2x XFX R9 290x in Crossfire
It doesnt matter if you think he should buy a desktop. He clearly stated he wants a laptop so gtfo.

Stop lie, Swordbreaker. I go down to 16 FPS in WvW and I got a gtx 680 and i5 2500k 4.2. I get 15% gpu usage under this circumstances which proves that its my cpu that is bottlenecking in this game, even if its top notch (i7 3930 3.7 equally expect HT). This game is hugely CPU heavy, HUGELY, and an I7 is to prefer.
First of all, you have 1 680. I have two 7970s in crossfire and they are overclocked. Second of all you have your cpu at 4.2 ghz, I have mine at 4.7. Third im using the new catalyst 12.11 drivers that take advantage of the 7000 series newer architecture.
So no. Im not lying.

Well you kind of misinterpreted what I said. Not all of WvW runs at 45 fps. Just every single person on screen at the same time. That is also with everything maxed out graphically and every check box checked at 1920×1080. When its a medium sized fight to larger fight, its at least 60 fps. Smaller fights around 80-100 fps.

The game engine doesn’t need optimized. Its a graphic intensive game with a lot going on on the screen. And yes I do get 45 fps on huge zergs in WvW.

Good setup at this point in time there really is no setup that will run WvW on highest settings and achieve a solid 40+ fps with 75+ people on screen with maybe 40-50+ on screen you’ll stay above 30 witch is very playable anymore than that the game engine takes a nose dive. Lots of people are running 5.0ghz+ i5’s and still dropping below 30 fps with 70-100 players on screen just how it is…
My setup runs 45+ fps with that many people on screen in WvW. So there is a setup that will run it at that fps.

Is there an issue with GW2 and ATI cards?
in Account & Technical Support
Posted by: Swordbreaker.2581
I have two 7970s and with the 12.11 beta drivers I get 120 fps on average but it can go down to 45 fps in a big zerg in WvW as well as the redone LA for the halloween update it goes down to 30 fps where as before the update I was getting 60-70 fps in LA. And while its true Nvidia cards pre 12.11 beat out the amd cards, thats simply not the case with the 7000 series anymore since the release of the 12.11 drivers. 7000 series cards with the new drivers match or exceed benchmarks vs the gtx 600 series now.

GW2 is still CPU Bound (straight from Nvidia)
in Account & Technical Support
Posted by: Swordbreaker.2581
Sure the game is cpu bound. However if you have a processor that is powerful enough, you will still see double fps from having two cards in sli/crossfire. My setup gives me double fps with my second 7970. If I disable crossfire I will only get half the fps.
/ 2x XFX R9 290x in Crossfire
The camera is a bug they have to fix. The city areas and lots of people on screen slowing your fps down is because of your cpu being older.

New ATI Drivers out now, huge improvements
in Account & Technical Support
Posted by: Swordbreaker.2581
It’s probably worth mentioning that the new drivers wont fix the culling issue when turning the camera but I was able to clock my cpu down to 4.4 ghz and still get 60-70 fps in LA with the new drivers. Where it may have been 50-55~ before. Over all Ive seen about a 10-15% difference in performance (higher fps) than with 12.9 betas.

Amd cpus are the best value for your money. But you also get what you pay for.
/ 2x XFX R9 290x in Crossfire
No. This thread is about asking devs to optimize a game for a minority of people on amd cpus. Btw, asking devs to optimize performance on amd cpus is like asking devs to optimize the game to run on a graphing calculator. The point being amd cpus dont have the power to play the game at a decent fps without being oc’d to 5ghz.

/ 2x XFX R9 290x in Crossfire
My point was that you cant compare a 4.8ghz oc bulldozer to other amd chips. My second point was that amd still sucks compared to intel at the same speed. Intel nets double the amds fps. Unless everybody who has amd is going to oc to 4.8ghz, the game isnt playable on amd.
/ 2x XFX R9 290x in Crossfire
For a bulldozer at almost 5ghz, to compare it to any other Amd chip and say “they are up to it” is a bit laughable. Also, 25 fps in big zergs is not good for a chip thats almost oc to 5 ghz. My 3930k gets 45 at the lowest in big zergs at even 4.5ghz. Also what the hell is “smooth as butter?” 60-70fps? Thats horrible. My intel at the same speed as your amd gets me average 100 fps. 60 in big DEs and in lions arch with everything set at max and supersampling. Come now… 25 fps with an amd at almost 5ghz and you think this is bragging on Amd chips? Lol. Its not buddy.

If I were you, I would get a second 660 ti card and you should get a lot better fps.
/ 2x XFX R9 290x in Crossfire
Don’t Question how I spend my money. I’m an it manager at Cigna health care and maintain a pretty hefty income. I also use my 690s for an intense amount of graphic work and my processor for Intense coding, so thank you to all the computer gurus out there saying I wasted my money.
This game is broke.
Nice rig
Also for some reasons the 690’s are a little behind the performance of the two 7970’s at this point it seems and running two of them isn’t scaling as it should. This is kind of a mystery to me as the 690’s should outperform two 7970’s in crossfire in most games, but then again, maybe its not an optimization issue, and the 690’s just don’t do as well in this game.

I did attempt to ask if any optimizations would be made to the game in order to give everybody a better experience in GW2 on the reddit AMAA thread today; however the programmers seemed to skirt around any question of relevance straight to questions like “zomg how can I be like you guyz?” Sorry. I tried.

I know I wouldn’t need the -umbra gpu flag but I tried it just for fun, and it reduced my fps. Go figure.

I remember when I first downloaded Rift. I thought.. this fps seems really low, I wonder when they are going to optimize it. You know what. It was already as optimized as it was going to get. I think sooner or later people might have to face the possibility that guild wars 2 may be as optimized as its ever going to get. I don’t know that for sure but I do know that if it doesn’t get optimized, there’s going to be a whole lot of people with older systems that are going to be really disappointed.

Taking your fps measurement with the world map up doesn’t count ;p
/ 2x XFX R9 290x in Crossfire
Also that being said, I did see one example of GW2 running on quad 7970s. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0nHKqbNX4fs And that guy seemed to get it to work across 5 monitors. Maybe its an nvidia driver issue.
/ 2x XFX R9 290x in Crossfire
I’ve said it before. four videocards is for benchmarks and peakittening. More often than not, running four video cards will cause more problems than It solves.
/ 2x XFX R9 290x in Crossfire
Also I do understand the frustration and anger of people that have AMD cpus and can’t play GW2 with decent fps. But what you have to take away from this is that you should be angry at AMD for selling a subpar product and not Anet.
/ 2x XFX R9 290x in Crossfire
“I read his statements as “we cant do anything more then we have done, anet need to optimize their end now” and that should be a given”
lol. That is far from what he said. And you are going to interpret it the way you see fit. I’m just saying that this game is a really heavily cpu bound game and many other people have had the same issue with mmos that were new on the hardware that was available to them at the time. Just do a google search for WoW low fps issues and search the year it came out. You’ll find the same problems with any mmo. People wrongly compare GW2 with other mmos that came out years ago on their current setup. Of course WoW plays better on computers a decade after it came out. That is a silly comparison to make. I’m just curious what group I am a fanboy of? Am I a fanboy to logic and reasoning?
/ 2x XFX R9 290x in Crossfire
“All the multi-GPU optimization that can be done on this game (not just CF, but also SLI) has already been released. It is a very CPU-dependent DX9 engine, and that’s all there is to it.”
That statement could be made about any MMO ever released.
/ 2x XFX R9 290x in Crossfire
The Amd Rep on the link you provided did not say they need to optimize the game further. They said that the game is cpu bound, so theres only so much gpus can do.
/ 2x XFX R9 290x in Crossfire
@Jazhara what are you talking about multi cards are not supported well? If I disable CF then I get 45-50 fps. If I enable I get 90-120 fps average and can dip down to 50 in lions arch or up to 145 fps in the norn areas and obviously indoors.
/ 2x XFX R9 290x in Crossfire
Was in the Asura starter area and turned off crossfire just to see how good or bad the xfire scaling was. I was standing at 45-50 fps. I turned on xfire and got 90-110. So pretty good. It is an interesting question if the intel cpus are being used to their full potential. Probably not completely.
