Hey there. Laptops overheating can be frustrating, but the cause of it isn’t really guild wars as much as it is that laptops get clogged up pretty fast with lint. Especially if you have pets at home. My wife has an Alienware m17x and at least once every 6 months to a year, I take it apart and clean out the radiator fins next to the fans for the CPU and GPUs. On some laptops this is a harder procedure than others. If you’re not comfortable doing it yourself, you can take it to somebody to do it for you but it may cost 100 bucks for them to take a laptop apart and clean it. If you at comfortable doing it yourself , I would recommend looking up a YouTube teardown video for your specific model and see what is required to get to those fans and give them a good cleaning.
This would fix your problem.
Your 6850 is more than adequate. Your problem is the AMD CPU. Upgrade to a 1150 socket motherboard and get a 4670k and a hyper 212 evo to cool it and overclock it to 4.5 ghz and it’ll be smooth sailing for you.

oO why would you guys tell him to get an SSD? It doesn’t improve performance. Just speeds up load times.
The blue siege bubble of death! BSBD?
I doubt a new install would do anything. It sounds like something is overheating, probably the gpu. Do you have temperatures recorded at the time the fps drops?

ok.. :/ if i stick with amd processor is there a better one that is almost like intel i7 or something better then mine and graphic card too
Your CPU is fine IMO. I would however suggest two things for you to do to increase performance. First is if you have a cooler like a hyper 212 evo, you should be able to overclock that CPU to at least 4.5 ghz. Which will help. Also, if you have 1600 MHz memory, or even 1333, replace that with 2400 MHz as with an APU, your ram is being used as graphics memory, so the faster the ram on a system that has an APU , the faster your fps. If those two don’t yield better performance to your liking , which they should increase your fps by 15-20 fps, try also getting a 6670

Well if money is no issue sure you could build a new system. But changing to an Intel CPU means getting a new mobo as well.

To put it more plainly then, the benefits of multiple video cards in GW2 is largely limited to higher resolution output and / or super sampling. It doesn’t help in nearly all of the cases where people encounter low performance.
In Derathore’s case, it’s not an option I’d recommend to pursue.
It’s the cheapest and most effective upgrade without switching his processor and buying a more expensive video card.

Multi gpu scaling is pretty poor in GW2. Also with entry level gpus it’s usually better to just get a stronger discrete for a bit more instead of going multi gpu with something weaker. Crossfire also still has frame pacing issues with DX9 code paths (AMDs recent frame pacing beta driver only effects DX10/11 so Gw2 still has pacing issues with crossfire)
If you end up feeling like you want to throw more hardware at the problem later on look out for a cheap Gtx 650 or hd 77xx. Either option would be significantly faster than the A10s gpu. Anything much more than that would be a waste as the cpu would bottle neck anything much faster by a noticeable amount.
Multi gpu scaling is fine. Where having crossfire doesn’t effect fps in gw2 is when the CPU is bottlenecked by a lot of people on screen or being in a large city.

Get a Radeon 6670 to crossfire with your APU, http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0086A7AB8/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1377280835&sr=8-1&pi=SL75 You should see better fps then.

Seems to happen on my wife’s computer too, just like you mentioned. There will be a slow down every so often since probably a previous patch because I don’t remember it doing it before. Though it’s difficult for me to pinpoint which patch may be responsible because I don’t play that much and my motherboard has been rma’ d so I’ve gone a long stretch before patching. Only thing I could offer is turn off shadows and reflections if you haven’t done that already.
(edited by Swordbreaker.2581)
Later this month Phase 2 will include dx9 games and eyefinity resolutions when it’s released.
13.8 with frame pacing only effects crossfire configurations, not single cards as well as it isn’t for eyefinity yet. Also you can turn frame pacing off if you want to use the driver anyway. It’s in 3d application settings.
I’ve never seen someone get banned and complain on the forums without it being for good cause. Just take it like a man, and move on.

Have you checked to see if the speakers are plugged into the main audio out and not the left or right channel? Also are your headphones USB? If they are you could try a minijack to USB adapter to plug the speakers into the USB port.
Not without replacing the motherboard as well. Which means you’d be replacing just about everything and building a new pc.
Use a program like Msi afterburner to check the percentage of the video card being used in the game. It should have an on screen display you should be able to configure in options. You’ll most likely have to start gw2 first then start up Msi. At least, for me, gw2 will crash with Msi started first as it doesn’t like to start with on screen displays.
It seems like to me with 16 and 18 fps that your computer isn’t utilizing the graphics card at all and using integrated graphics. If this is the case, the card will measure like 0 percent or close to it.
I guess lets start with the obvious. Did you download the latest drivers? Also make sure your graphics card is seated right as well as in the correct PCI slot.
It’s not your graphics card. Also does anybody else feel like Bill Murray in Ground Hogs day in this forum anymore?
I think that build would do fine. I would just recommend a 660ti instead of the normal 660.
see signature for system, see here for example videos:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2G4FhRqIoA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBtulIV3nUI
FPS on MSI afterburners OSD was locked to a max of 30 in those videos, I have to remake them with dxtory instead of fraps for real fps numbers. Will probably do that sometime this week.

Using Swordbreakers original list. minus the Blueray and 1866 ram.
Its over budget and tbh, its very very low end. I wouldnt recommend it to som1 looking for a entry level gaming rig. Considering just a couple hundread pound would make some VASLTY superior.
Ty super
STOP
Guys remember things dont jst convert over ot british pounds from US dollars. We have 20% VAT + a little extra ontop.
If ur going to help use PCpartpicker and set it to UK .. u wil lthen see the proper costs.
You could have been a little more constructive to the cause , and since you’re from the UK would be able to help him with a more realistic cost for the components listed with VAT, instead of criticizing others.
IMO though , that is the cheapest for best performance setup he’ll be able to acquire. Good luck with the build man! Ask the mom and dad for a little extra and I think you’ll be set on the questing anyway.
You did a great job Swordbreaker, but there is one issue.
Computer components are always more expensive in the EU so he isn’t going to get the discounts that websites like Tigerdirect offer. Plus he will have to pay for shipping.
Sorry man, I tried and Ty. Lol
To give you an idea of how it will work (sorry had trouble finding a GW2 video because the a10-6800k is still new and the video on youtube didn’t include the 6670 dual graphics)
Yes. It’ll play crysis.
edit: Here’s the GW2 video on the A10-6800k but withOUT the 6670, playing at about 25-30 fps while questing, you would get about double that with the 6670, so about 50-60 fps on med.
Also keep in mind, that guy is using the A10-6800k at stock speeds it seems , so with a little over clock, you could probably push 70 fps on medium settings at 720, or 60 fps at 1080, but those are rough guestimates.

Also I suppose if you wanted to save a little more money, you could chuck out the dvd burner and use the one you have with your current computer or just wait to get one later, i know its only 20 bucks, but every little bit helps and now adays you can download most everything you need.

I find it disturbing that 90% of the people who are on this forum for performance issues find that their only recourse is to overclock their CPU’s.
Even people with high end systems NEED to oc their i7’s/FX’s in order to get the game to run somewhat acceptable.
Anet better wake up and smell the coffee because the 5770k isnt going to be stock 6ghz.
Until the engine is optimized there isn’t anything anyone can do and even worse is that the game will probably never be optimized and will never run well even on that next gen 5770k.
I agree with you, but as I’ve said before over clocking is the only thing we can control. We can’t go in and optimize the engine and per the nvidia employee post, if its true, Anet has done little to nothing as far as working with nvidia and amd to improve performance, which I have a hunch it’s true because there was only one driver update on the amd front that enabled crossfire with gw2
Either would be fine, though core for core, Intel is faster ATM where the piledrivers are more like an i3. Mostly you’re going to want an ssd for recording high quality video, because the faster the write speed, the higher quality the video and the less amount of lag in the video.

I’d say get a single gtx780. The reason I say that is the 780 is built off the gk110 that the titan uses. The titan gets about 80% of the performance as two gtx680s and the 780 gets about 10% less performance than the titan so its a great GPU for close to sli performance without the screen tearing associated with sli setups.

Edit: Render Distance.
I can see this helping my FPS greatly without having to buy a new CPU (which everyone seems to blame the problem on, and not the game itself). I can live without seeing the mountains thousand mile away. Is there no way to change it at this point?
Im guilty of blaming performance on the processor and I don’t mean to say that the game isn’t to blame, because it is. I simply mean that the CPU is the only variable we can control. But I do completely agree with a draw distance setting.
/15char
My rig?
His CPU is fine. Myabe just a little better than my i5 760. I think it’s a graphic setting that you’re cranking up too high for these slowdowns. Do you manually configure setting in your catalyst control panel? Because it can override game setting. Make sure morphological filtering is off. It blurs the game up.
Negative. Graphics settings will only adjust gpu usage.
Turning graphics down will only stress the GPU less. Displaying multiple people on screen at the same time is going to be more intensive on the CPU. This is what he’s having problems with. He can try turning down graphics settings but he still will have low fps when others are around.
Am I the only one missing OP’s processor brand and model?
Yes please, Tom could you tell us what your cpu model is?
Also CPUs are split up into cores. So if you have 4 cores and you’re using 25%, check to see if one of the cores is maxed at 100%, most games will not use 100% of all 4 cores
When is your GPU at 25%? In WvW or leveling and exploring?
Ok i have been monitoring my gpu now for 2h 27mins and it turns out the average workload is on 25% not counting the 0s. So that means its not that i don’t have a good enough gpu i just can’t get it higher the bottleneck is in anet’s hands.
I also like to point out that a lot of the time the gpu is not processing anything from 23:23:39-23:24:28 it was on 0% all the time.
If your GPU is at 25%, your CPU is the bottleneck , not your gpu

Radeon hd 7790 – most bang for the buck imo, even cheaper than 660ti
If you plan on getting 40+ fps in wvw or places like LA you’re going to want to oc that 3570k. I would spring for a h100i. You’ll easily pull 4.5ghz with low temps.
Its not your computer or your drivers. Turning the camera and dropping fps happens to most everybody.
Disagree. I think it looks beautiful on maximum settings.
Glad you got it working. It sounds like gw2 for some reason was using the integrated graphics and not your 7970.
Can you confirm that your 7970 is running at 16x and not 4x in gpu-z. That is awfully low. It is either running at 4x or your computer is using integrated graphics and not using the 7970 at all. Also download msi afterburner and you can use the on screen display to figure out if your 7970 is being utilized at all.
Well many said the 9400 was under min reqs. It is perfectly playable if you don’t have an old CPU. In this case its most likely his CPU. It still wouldn’t hurt upgrading the video card but his CPU is causing most of his problems.
