Here’s the premise. RNG is evenly distributed on aggregate.
TL;DR I’m happy with a mostly random distribution, so long as it can be massaged to prevent the more egregious outliers.
For instance:
I’m on Deso since launch. Come Tequatl first arriving we were one of the earliest servers to be able to kill it regularly. It was a lot of fun whilst it was still challenging. It led directly to one of my most memorable in-game moments(1) I’ve killed it regularly ever since. I have never had a mini, Tequatl Hoard or any of the “top end” loot. I have seen, several times, someone get the hoard and announce to map or say it was their first Teq kill. A guildie got 2 minis in 2 weeks (which is how I ended up with mine).
After only getting scraps after 100+, 200+ I have no idea, attempts, I’m just going to give up on it. It appears to not like me. I’m the unlucky holder of an outlier account that is perfectly within acceptable random distribution. Even if you are using an external random number generator with guaranteed entropy on your servers, those outliers are still going to exist. It is, after all, random
I understand the maths. But it’s a game. It’s meant to be fun. For those outliers, it frequently isn’t. How far off the distribution curve you need to be to feel like you’re “doomed unlucky” will vary person to person.
So let’s have some streak-breaks. Nudge Tequatl, Fractals, Bosses or whatever such that if you’ve done 25 (some number that keeps things on the distribution curve of “random” with the ends cut off) kills and not had something nice, you do. Simple as that. 100% chance of one of the “nice things” to break your unlucky streak. Perhaps the mini when you wanted the Hoard etc, but at least you got a “good ’un”. Perhaps a variable length run so it doesn’t become simply guaranteed loot every 25 times.
Alternatively leave as-is, but add some tickets to the loot, and a vendor in LA who sells all the nice things for tickets. Those tickets give the same drop rate as the “random” loot. The lucky outliers get more lucky, but the unlucky outliers don’t get a kick in the face every single time.
NO, not with laurels as well. NO, not with 10g as well. Just the tickets. A sane amount of the tickets.
Spoons. Stop giving them to me. They appear to take up a “nice” loot slot. I don’t want to open a restaurant.
“What’s the point doing Tequatl, all you ever get is another spoon”
Another for instance:
One guildie (the same one of two teq minis in 2 weeks) has 8 legendaries. She was gifted one pre, the rest were drops/forge. I’ve never seen one, even in party. Perhaps we’re both outliers, but even if she has played 2x the hours of me shouldn’t I at least have seen one? Even a harpoon gun. That’s not the same as expecting a guaranteed Dusk at some point.
I have simply given up on the Mystic Toilet, as I now always regret not salvaging for ectos.
I’m never having a Legendary, I’ve accepted that. Grinding gold and buying off TP is NOT an acceptable means of acquisition for me. I want to have done it myself, or it doesn’t count.
Third for-instance:
Key farming. I tried this for a while, and got a reasonable amount of “stuff”. Later I found out that Black Lion tickets should drop roughly one time in xx (I forget the exact number), as well as scraps. I’d never seen a full ticket, so I logged every key farm I did since:
52 prior to Sept patch – 0 tickets.
30 since Sept patch – 0 tickets.
Attempt 31 got me a ticket. There were perhaps 100-150 key runs before I started logging loot. So I’m still way under that average on the wiki and claimed by others.
Buy zephyr pack, get 1 ticket, and markedly better loot, along with lots of scraps. OK, is drop rate significantly biased towards gem-bought keys? Or Chests opened together, rather than opened as you get the keys?
One day I’ll quit, quite possibly when my friend gets her ninth pre, simply as I feel I have a lower chance of having nice things, so it’s pointless to go on.
I really miss season 1 of the Living Story, as I got a lot of the meta rewards for reasonable challenge, fun and time. Now you give us a boring instance to re-run identically for a few AP and Dry Top random fossils to grind. Did I mention my in-game luck?
To be fair I’ve had a lot of fun in game, and still do, I’m just unlucky…
(1) In-Game Moment:
Ninja invading low-population servers as we couldn’t get enough of our own people on the Deso map to make a kill party (people were guesting to Deso in the hopes of seeing a successful kill. No doubt similar on SFR etc).
Easy, smooth kill of Tequatl resulted, and the locals were delighted and astonished. Comments along the lines of “What the hell just happened? We never got him below 90% before…” “Please come back tomorrow?” filled the map every time.
Of course it does.
Is it the future we want?
Is it the future you want?
Is it the future ANet shareholders want?
Who knows. Probably not even ANet.
TL:DR; RNG might be RNG, but why do you spit in it’s face when it finally DOES grant an ascended/pre/whatever you want(but not exactly what you want).
Can you wear/use it? Yes/no. Then be content.
I have never complained about getting anything, and then I got a precursor, and I was excited.
Aside from unlocking the collection I don’t have char that can usefully use. If a pre dropped, yes I’d probably make if it was one I liked, even if I didn’t use the wep.
I guess it’s meant to trigger the “nearly” reaction of scratch cards and such, and make me want to try more. For me, has the opposite effect.
I like the suggestion some other people made. Give players an Ascended Token which you can turn int a vendor for an item with the stats of your like. Or make them like some fractal boxes, where you can choose your own stats. It is not like they drop on a regular base to say thats over powered to do so.
EDIT: Got like 6-7 of those ascended chests in my bank all with different stats.
These ideas I like, even if it was like the PVP reward track chests and gave you a choice of three stat options. At least it would give good chance of being something useful for all.
Or Tequatl gives 1-10 tokens per kill, and 500 gets you something from the teq vendor.
Why wouldn’t you choose an armor piece and then vendor it. Not sure how much armor is worth, but ascended weapons are 1g a piece.
I forget exactly, but it was around 2silver. Was definitely less than ascended rings.
So I recently decided to try and go for my Map Completion. The Problem – I am TERRIBLE at Jumping puzzles and there are a LOT of SP and Vista’s that require you to complete a mini Jumping Puzzle.
I used to detest JPs. My main for most of my time in game was a max size charr. Trying to do jumping when I have a clipped view of a wall through the inside of my shoulder is no fun. Other thing I used to find on charr is having no clear idea where my feet were.
Then I started levelling my human and asura alts. I actually started to have a little fun with them. This surprised me. They seem to jump further. May just be my imagination, but this surprised me a lot. I’m certainly much more accurate.
Some ideas, assuming you don’t want to do this on a human or asura:
Get a transformation potion. I used to use Infinite Watchknight Tonic, but ghost tonic, or endless mystery cat potion I’ve seen recommended. Anything that will shrink you down smaller, but still let you jump, will help a LOT. I’m sure there’s plenty of other possible potions. The JP and some vista routes were simply designed for human sized characters and have camera issues for norns and charrs.
Our guild does a monthly JP night so everyone gets the 12 puzzles. Route is made to take in any that people miss for achievements. With a few mesmers in the group it’s super easy, even for the jumping challenged. We’ve taken in a few vistas for people doing this at times. You’ll learn the routes, so they’ll be easier when you decide to try alone. Maybe suggest your guild do this?
Befriend a mesmer or two who like JPs. I’m sure they’ll help with the more annoying Vistas and JPs.
You’ll jump further when under a speed buff.
These days I miss only 1 JP achievement (a borderland that I never remember to get round to).
Oh I equipped it for the skin and collection, then nuked
I’ve just had my very first Ascended Armour chest from a rank up chest.
My first, despite playing since launch. After I guess 200 teq kills giving nothing, though now spoons take up a loot slot. I got my mini from a lovely guildie who got two in two weeks, and was probably sick of me complaining of no minis from teq. >.<
No precursors here either.
Apothecary stats.
Deleted within seconds.
They’re ludicrously rare. Would it really be so terrible to allow us to choose the stats?
I’m really starting to hate RNG everything loot.
Most of the mesmers you’ll see, my own included, got a portal to Rhendak. To repay the debt of the mystery mesmer who did the dungeon back near the dawn of time, we’ll make portals to the waypoint.
My mesmer was parked there, but he’s one of my crafting alts, so doesn’t live there enough.
I have a number of chalices and blue Rhendak’s Signets now though.
Don’t ignore staff. It’s your highest base damage weapon, and as such is giving you the highest damage in death shroud. Not so useful in pve directly aside from pulling. Really good in WvW though.
Dagger is, at long last, your only cleave weapon, and has higher damage than axe. You have a huge health pool so mostly shouldn’t be bothered being up front.
Only useful minion is Flesh Worm – for necrotic traversal, and rarely, your only reliable blast finisher.
Staff 4 is mostly useless as a finisher as it’s a mark that needs to be triggered by a mob to blast. Not helpful for most stealth and stacking before fight.
Necro finishers are a really weird bunch. You get a good selection underwater though >.<
Oh. No. It would become LotRO legendaries. Hours and hours and hours (with baubles in the shop to speed it up) grinding a weapon just to get it to max damage and bonuses.
Hours and hours trying to get the “right” bonuses.
Nice idea, but when implemented in an MMO? Please, no.
Outrageous. I love the smell of double standards.
Magic Carpet – 250 gems
Usable inside dungeons and spvp
Infinite Watchknight Tonic
Can no longer be used in dungeons.
I truly hope that the carpet not only allows whatever made you nerf the tonic, but has some more significant dungeon problems associated with it.
Happens quite a bit, especially if you’re stood on the burrow, towards the corner side of it. Can also happen sometimes with FGS/warrior rush before the burrows die.
Exactly the same can happen on the first burrow by the entrance.
When the burrow “dies” if you’re stood on the thing, you are dropped to a slightly different place. Probably what causes it.
Stay on the room side of the burrows and it shouldn’t happen.
My necro is main for WvW. I’ve noticed a definite, and significant bias towards medium since patch. So it’s hurting income. It’s gone on far too long now, and is too consistent to be just a run of bad luck.
It should stop the profession loot weighting at level 80.
@Relshdan
That’s not underwhelming enough. You’ll have people asking for mounted combat with that!
Introduce mounts, 3250 gems or whatever. Obviously it has to be just over a multiple of 800.
They move at -33% of run speed. Hopefully that comes out midway between walking and running. Seems appropriate for a rented horse.
Also they must need feeding, or they die; and cleaning up after…
Here’s how skewed it is so far on my necro – from three paths AC, two paths CoF:
1 exotic, 0 rares, all else salvaged.
30 cloth (3 tiers)
30 wood (2 tiers)
44 ore (3 tiers)
129 leather (3 tiers).
I’m taking screenshots after each dungeon, and will post along with better breakdown as I get more data. This is typical of what I’ve been experiencing though.
None of the champ bags have been opened or included – mob drops and boss chests only.
1) The change was supposed to be unnoticeable:
I think that’s one of the points of the thread. It may be supposed to be unnoticeable, but for me (on my seemingly bugged-loot necro main), OP and others it’s very noticeable and consistent. Perhaps there’s a bug causing it to be applied too harshly than intended etc.
Could it be a really bad run of RNG luck? Possibly, but after a few weeks of consistently more leather on my necro that seems increasingly unlikely! It’s not quite the same as waiting for the RNG lottery win of a precursor – lots of blues and green drop all the time, and the balance of the resulting materials has changed. Rather noticeably.
If I’d been getting consistently more light, as a necro should, I doubt I’d be here complaining about this new approach. I’d be quietly delighted at the extra income, not drawing attention to it on here. Necro being the class I get most loot on, after all. :p
I don’t have recorded samples of loot to be statistically adequate, nor samples from before patch to serve as a control. My play style hasn’t changed, the stuff (after salvage) I end up with seems to have…
So I’ve just cleared my necro of all mats and will keep a track of what the next few days brings. I don’t know whether loot bags / champ bags are blessed with this loot favouring, so any I happen to get will be opened on my ele.
Sod’s Law states that now I’ll get an RNG run of mostly heavy or something…
30 minutes is nothing, not a statistical sample. Only ones crying about this change are the farmers and market flippers, none of which evoke any kind of sympathy from me. Normal casual player doesn’t notice any change, or notices positive change in drops that he can actually use.
So no normal casual player wants ascended gear? Or does fractals?
I’m neither a tp flipper or farmer for gold – beyond some regular farming time spent trying to gather the materials needed for my first set of ascended armour.
I can’t do it on my necro as that’s bugged and favouring medium. I can’t do it on my thief as that’s getting mainly medium too. So as a normal casual player since launch I have to gear my ele so as to farm now?
What normal casual player uses the level 80 greens they get?
For levelling your first ever character I can see the attraction, as that is the only time you might want the blues and greens that drop. At 80, or on an alt, it’s nothing other than decreasing the chance to “play it your way”.
(edited by Syzygy.5031)
My first class at launch was necro, and I threw it away by level 50 as it seemed so under powered. Came back to necro much later (after getting thoroughly bored on warrior), and overall it’s become my favourite class.
Necro is my favourite WvW class. Amazingly versatile, aside from being over-dependent on others for stability. Of the classes I’ve played it’s the best for loot bags! Very, very good survivability – you can run up front with melee (dagger/warhorn) if you want. Though I mostly play it ranged with staff, along with plenty of plague form+DS.
It’s also my class of choice for CS aoe farm events – tags everything
It might not be meta, but necro works pretty well in dungeons too – though you’ll do better with guild runs than in LFG
Choose your traits well!
I’m pretty sure I still get way more leather and metal than cloth armour on my necro. Certainly nothing like the balance ratios the OP exhibits.
You wouldn’t. Necro profession loot is bugged: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/bugs/Necro-loot-drops-are-bugged
I get mostly leather on my necro, which sucks as it’s my main WvW class and favourite for aoe farming.
For single target I prefer my thief, which now of course, also gets mostly leather. So no more nipping over to Sparkfly Fen and farming linen for 30 mins on that either.
Profession favouring loot is horrible. Doubly so at endgame. Even when levelling an alt I’m seeking light I can salvage, rather than worthless leather. 1 piece of linen can buy me 100 pieces of leather.
Frankly, it’s game breaking and needs to go.

I’d much rather see more uses for badges, and a WvW reward track just like they added the PvP reward track. Perhaps with some unique skins as well as the dungeon and region tracks.
Get the Ghostly Tonic from Ascalonian Catacombs. They drop often enough in the explorable paths and even then they are only 10 tokens each.
Ooh, didn’t think of those – thanks! I mostly NPC them, but I’m bound to have a few still in bags somewhere!
I guess they want to prevent horrible exploits in story dungeons, like so:
(We thought it was rather neat transforms worked in the cut scenes, so the whole party transformed for that step, when we were doing achievements)
I habitually use this in one dungeon – so my charr toon can complete the harpy fractal without major camera issues on the planks section. Happens every time without.
So now I’m likely going to fractal gear one of my human or asura chars, or find another tonic, that is usable in dungeons, that reduces my oversized, camera breaking charr to a “normal” size.
Perhaps ANet can fix their broken camera if using tonics isn’t acceptable. Or resize all charrs…
Seems an utterly ridiculous change to me. It’s not like it lasts very long.

I’d love an invite (EU).
Do all dungeons/fractals except Arah and need to change that!
If I remember correctly…
Interact with the shrine. There’s no indication that you can press F to interact, but it allows interaction and allows the story to continue…
Meanwhile I’m stuck on the level 40 Norn storyline with an InstanceCreate error!
I’m level 80, around 500 skill points, all traits except one Grandmaster unlocked that I’ll never use.
Dianus tells me “You need a little more experience before I can help you. Go and seek adventure, and then return to me when you’re ready.”
When will I be ready?
Great idea, and I’ll add the one thing I found confusing about downed state, when it first happened. The skills are only visible whilst you’re downed and on a timer.
Put the class’s downed skills on the weapon skills tab so I can see what they do before I need them.
When a mob or six are bashing on your head is not the time to be reading tooltips and figuring out which is most likely to help, especially as they vary by profession.
Moving it out to level 5 doesn’t help in the slightest. A completely new player is still going to wonder what the heck just happened, but given no opportunity to adjust, or even explanation, so is probably just going to start spamming numbers. They are on a timer after all…
They get another surprise first time downed under water. Again on their first alt.
Anet have removed bundles and massively oversimplified transformations (like the wolf heart for Norns), presumably because players weren’t adapting to the sudden change in all their skills. (I think they’re drawing the wrong conclusion and solving the wrong problem, but that’s for another thread). At least in the context of those quests you can spend 20 seconds, or 5 minutes as necessary looking at tooltips without risk.
Level gating 3 and 4 gives them less to read, but they’re still on a surprise, on a timer.
New players rarely read wikis. They might look at their skills tab whilst out of combat.
Your idea would give them a moment to look. The help could point out that skill 1 is always damage, and 4 heal, and that the skills vary by profession and when drowning.
Having them on their skills panel would let people look at why they got dead. Most likely just afterwards.
Or why their warrior apparently rallied yet dropped dead without reason (they hit 3) moments later.
This is a bug, right? I can’t find anything about it being removed.
Blubloop no longer sells Variloo’s Swift Algae Snack, just the quaggan tonic.
Have they potentially been moved to other Heart vendors?
I hope so, might take a while for us to find out which though…
Had a quick scoot round a few in QD and Kessex, but didn’t find a heart vendor with these.
I checked master cook in Claypool and LA, and the karma vendor in LA, but not there.
Nothing in the patch notes either.
I think it would be silly to remove the Apples from Eda though. She has an APPLE ORCHARD.
Absolutely.
She still asks if you’d like some pie, and still claims to make the best pie in Kryta, but doesn’t sell those any more either! Just that spoon. Kryta farmers have become a strange bunch…
Also, Eda in QD no longer sells apples, just a spoon. This leaves no way to buy apples aside from one at a time from Apple Jack for 16c
Apples are too confusing for new players, so they removed them from the game.
I posted in the First Impression thread my extreme disappointment at the forced JP in this zone. I have to entirely agree with the OP – it shouldn’t have been a compulsory gateway.
Zephyr Sanctum had the balance about right in that respect – the whole zone and event wasn’t locked and predicated on the jumping. If you didn’t like JPs you didn’t collect the crystals, but there were plenty of other things still available. The only bit you HAD to do was the very simple and obvious route to the top.
Maybe I’d hate them less if I hadn’t chosen a Charr as main with permanent JP camera issues.
Maybe I’d hate them less If I had a bunch of level 80 toons to choose from rather than preferring to run just one character.
As for:
“Jumping on the other hand CAN be trained and made possible.”
Games are meant to be fun. I don’t find platform or jumping games fun. Even slightly. So why would I train something I find phenomenally boring? That’s just punishment!
What about if it included a WvW stage to progress to the event map? I’d love that, but I know most wouldn’t. If you’re not good at pvp, well it can be trained you know…
Don’t get me wrong here – there’s nothing wrong with including them. Some people DO seem to like them after all, but to my mind making it the only route into the entire month’s event was a huge mistake.
