The problem is, I have put in as much effort as them, if not considerably more so, I just put it into different ingame activities, ones that ANet designed to not be as rewarding as TP flipping. So that goes back to my balance argument, you’re basically justifying a Warrior that does 100 times more damage than any other class by saying that if a player doesn’t like it they should have rolled a Warrior. No, thank you, instead Anet should just balance them against the other classes.

If you’re going to go down the road of “adventuring should be as profitable as TP trading,” then where does that line get drawn? Are we then going to say that all activities within the game should be equally as profitable? Jumping puzzles should be as profitable as dungeons? PvP as profitable as fractals?

If you are playing the game for fun (which you should be), then I fail to see why you’d care if player X playing style Y nets Z gold/hour. You’re still having fun. If you’re not, then you’ve missed the point of playing the game. I have been playing for five months now. And in those five months, I have had to work exactly 0 minutes. Why? Because I’m having fun and don’t consider it work.

Actually, you can still kill stuff in Lion’s Arch for bags. I was doing it yesterday after I tried to do the Knights part and my laptop overheated and shut itself off to cool for a few minutes. By the time I was able to log back in, the knights were all gone, so I stayed in the area and just started killing stuff. I got bags while doing it.

Let me ask to any of ya’ll (I know y’all, but not where I live) what legitimate reasons do you have that profit potential from trading/speculating/etc should not be brought more in line with the rest of the game?

As far as I can tell there’s only one. It’s a major gold sink. That is something that could be remedied, so….ya…what reasons are there?

I will start this by saying that I’m not a TP flipper/trader/speculator/whatever. I’m one of those “idiots” that sell what I have at the highest buying price, simply because I’d personally rather be playing the game than formulating a sales plan. Besides, I don’t like to tie up my money with selling fees.

Having said that, I have to ask… how would you remedy the gold sink issue? And before you answer, remember that it has to be done in such a way that the both the casual and serious player can agree on.

I don’t want them to be available for free for us either. But, please note that these skins were highly prestigious from one of the hardest endgame dungeons. Due to their prestige and importance in lore, why not polish them up better, tie them up to the lore, and make us all work for them in-game (maybe give a very slight advantage for those who played GW1). Ever since Fractals, horizontal progression has become “who has the most disposable cash” rather than “who has earned it in-game.”

Because people would them complain about the fact that they have to have to work or “grind” for the skins.

When people get angry, that is because they genuinely feel cheated, they don’t go of the way to find reasons. I’m not in agreement with the entitled sort who wishes these to be handed out for free just because they have 50/50 HoM, but there is a distinct difference between “Don’t like, don’t care, don’t buy.” and “Don’t like, quit the game because I feel cheated.” Putting one of the skins with highest prestige in the RNG cash shop, no matter how you look at it, is a cheap move.

The economics department probably figured the latter is a minority and they can still get good profits by catering to people like you right now. However, by following this model, a year later you’re the one who feels wronged for a similar reason and they lose another customer.

I can tell you this for sure. I will most likely never complain about any cosmetic item they put in the shop. I know that first and foremost, this game is run by a company that needs to make a profit. I’ll say it again, and bold and italicize what I just said. They need to make a profit. Cosmetic items would be one of the best ways for them to do it, especially if they can add new skins on a regular basis, new design or nostalgic design.

Let me see if I have this argument straight.

The Guild Wars 1 players that linked their accounts with their Guild Wars 2 accounts and had the possibility of getting 30 items and several titles only available to them are now complaining that the creators of Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2 decided to add armor skins from Guild Wars 1 into Guild Wars 2 through the gem shop.

One reason for the complaint is that Hall of Monuments didn’t give them exclusive rights to the new armor skins because they got them in game during their fun times in the original Guild Wars and feel it cheapens the accomplishment in the original game, even though the two are mutually exclusive.

The other argument is that they are in the gem shop, even though they could exchange gold for gems and never have to pay a dime.

Does that pretty well sum it up? Good. Then let’s tackle this one.

Argument #1: What possibly logic could you have for expecting these new skins to be available to you simply because you played both games? Were the rewards of linking accounts not good enough originally, and if not, why did you bother?

Argument #2: Oh no… ANet wants to make money!! Call the police!! And… as I said, gold to gems. No money down and nothing per month. Go play how you want, get gold, exchange gold for gems, buy the skins and be done with it.

I am completely amazed at how entitled some people get. Truly amazed.

I think there is something that those against the TP flippers are forgetting. The flippers create an immediate demand for items for those like me that don’t want to post an item and wait for it to sell. They set a price that I can live with and I sell whatever item needs to be sold, either because I can’t use the item myself or don’t want it taking up space in my bag or inventory. They most certainly serve a function. They buy what I don’t want right now. They give me the instant gratification I want, and they get paid for it by hopefully making a profit on reselling what I sold to them.

The fact that I don’t play the TP and still find that I make enough money to satisfy me (not worrying about what the next guy might make) says that it is working fine as far as I can tell.

if overflows would only be from a specific server, they’d never be full I imagine. Also germans have quite a few servers compared to Italy for example.

The problem here is that there are more than one activity going on, but only one (events) is communicated via map-markers. The other one – to succeed – isn’t. Of course this leads to anger towards other players, since the ones who do events think they do THE most important thing to make the mission succeed, while those who rescue have no real instant-notification that this one survivor they ressed is one more step towards the ultimate bag.

The number 1200 can only be found on websites, some might think they got the ultimate bag for being successful in all events on the map.

Actually, at some point in the event, there is a big yellow message that comes across the screen that tells each player to ignore the miasma and rescue the citizens. It’s our own fault for not actually figuring out what that means. I will fully admit that I didn’t understand it myself the first few times I saw it. When it finally sunk into my skull, I started doing nothing but rescuing civilians and encouraging the guards.

I am probably in the minority here, but I rescue the citizens to help everyone get as much of a reward as possible… not just for my own personal benefit. I get bags from killing the enemy in the path the citizens take, and that’s good enough for me. Usually, I’m in my preferred area all by myself. It’s fun killing veterans and elites solo, though it is slow. And I’m in green gear primarily, without a single berserker piece of armor. My necromancer pets help to keep me out of trouble though, so I’m okay.

I really should stop reading this thread. It makes me want to facepalm harder than my head would be able to bear. Some people really will put on tinfoil hats and complain about anything, just for the sake of complaining; no matter how ridiculous the “reason” actually is.

IF, and that’s really one big “if”; IF I would really need to run around between bank, TP, mystic forge, dungeon vendors, laurel merchant and guild commendations trader like 100 times in one or two hours… IF that would be the case, it would be faster now than it would have been in LA. This due to shorter distances and less/shorter loading screens.

And now excuse me; I need to convince my hands to not move towards my forehead with increased speed.

the thing is , you need people to complain about stuff like this , otherwise anet faces a slippery slope and putting alot more useful / necesary stuff behind a paywall , complain about the complainers all you want , they are a necesity.

I don’t need anyone to complain about this. I don’t personally think there’s anything to complain about. To be honest, I think there are several people on this forum (or pretty much every game forum) that complain just to complain. I’m not saying that’s the original poster’s reason for posting. However, I will say that as far as I can see, this topic is a far grasp from being necessary. Some of the complaints I’ve seen recently are irksome. This happens to be one of those topics, because it’s trivial at best.

Only rage it wasn’t done sooner, honestly. People hate the sylvari and I want the asura removed from the game for being insufferable. More insufferable each day.

Lion’s Arch was the target that made the most sense with the least player impact. Most of the amenities of Lion’s Arch were moved to Vigil. The rest can be accessed at any racial city/area/whatever you want to call it. It’s a minor inconvenience for what I think was a great event.

The above is my rationalization for what has transpired. If that makes me naive in anyone’s eyes, that’s fine by me. I’ve been called worse.

That’s not the part people are calling you naive over. They’re calling it naive because of the airship existing at all, even though in one week I have a half dozen passes sitting in my pocket I don’t ever need to use.

I have more passes than quaggan potions, all from bags.

Since I don’t play every day (shock!), I’ve only had two evenings and all day Sunday to do this event. And I think I have a dozen of the one-time passes that’ll probably never be used, simply because I personally don’t like the airship and don’t really find it convenient at all.

I won’t get into the Royal Terrace vs. Airship debate because I’ve never been in the Royal Terrace, so I can’t say much about it. If it’s anything like the airship, though, I’ll never buy a Royal Terrace pass either. I’m perfectly content with Divinity’s Reach for pretty much everything I need to do.

Guys from a lore standpoint LA was destroyed. I think it would actually be silly if the playerbase didn’t have any inconvenience or consequence in game to the fact that LA is gone.

The issue isn’t the lack of convenience, it’s the artificially imposed inconvenience and paid gem-store answer ArenaNet immediately created.

It’s morally dubious at best.

I don’t see it as morally dubious at all. I also don’t see Lion’s Arch being taken away (either temporarily or permanently) as an inconvenience. I personally found Lion’s Arch to be fairly inconvenient in and of itself.

And that’s fair, but objectively a number of users (probably a not insubstantial number) are going to purchase the pass because they miss the amenities Lions Arch offers. Many won’t, but it’s naive to think this decision wasn’t made with the intention of parting some hasty individuals from their cash.

I don’t think it’s naive at all.

Honestly, I think Anet wanted to do something on a grand scale, and what could be more grandiose than blowing up a major place? Now, of the major places to blow up, which one would be the most balanced to blow up? Obviously, it’s the one that has no racial ties to it. Could you imagine the rage that would occur if Divinity’s Reach was the target? Or The Grove? Or Rata Sum?

I find certain areas far more challenging that doing any of the zerg content. The dance I perform while dodging lasers and fighting veterans (and occasionally elites) solo might be enough to get me a spot on “So You Think You Can Dance.”

Add to that the laser which decided it wanted a piece of me and I was in trouble. Still in a downed state I was most disappointed when the zerg just ran past me.

Those lasers are a pain if get downed by one. I got tossed around by five of them yesterday… one right after the other. Of course, I died. What’s almost as bad as rallying while in the midst of the big red circle… over… and over… and over…

As far as the rezzing goes, I don’t follow the zerg. I will go out of my way to rez whomever needs it… unless they’re in the midst of a group of enemies or in the midst of the big red circle (see above). I’ve also noticed several others that go out of their way to rez others. I’m actually impressed at how the other players have been helping.

Chris

Hmmm… limiting myself to 150 to 200 word? I don’t think it can be done, since I have this ridiculous need to overstate pretty much everything I say to make sure that the reader understand exactly what it is I’m saying/proposing. It’s very difficult for me to truncate what I have to say into such a limiting manner. It goes against my very nature as someone that is almost always passionate about the topics I feel I need to discuss.

How can I, as someone that might have an idea that would benefit the game as a whole, possibly give enough detail to back up my thoughts or suggestions in a mere 150 to 200 words? It doesn’t seem plausible without removing so much that the point becomes unclear to its true purpose? My ideas are usually so complex that it would take 150 to 200 words just for the title of the suggestion idea.

TL;DR… 150 to 200 word limit is fine with me. Just pulling your chain.

To ppl that asked for vertical progression...

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: TChalla.7146

TChalla.7146

Vertical progression is not necessary. What is actually necessary is character progression. Ideally, we are invested in our characters and want to see them progress. The amount of identification with a character varies greatly but all players want their character to expand-evolve-advance whatever you want to call it.

Now, this is where you get to the two dominant methods of character progression, vertical and horizontal. Before you go any further, google “horizontal progression” and read the first couple three hits. These will generally contrast it to vertical progression. Horizontal progression, primarily through ability progression, allows players to vastly expand their characters. Vertical progression actually provides nothing but new numbers on a character sheet. In WoW I started at around 10-15k HP. Now I’m around 500k HP with corresponding increases is power and nothing has changed. I die just as fast and mobs take just as long to kill. The emperor of VP has no clothes.

Contrast that to ability progression where you explore, unlock new skills, and discover ways to enhance those skills. This may completely change your gameplay and utility in groups. This is where true build diversity occurs.

No, vertical progression is not necessary in an MMO. Google ESO +"character progression". What they talk about on their video is essentially skill progression of the horizontal variety regardless of what they do with VP. Why? Because it offers true character progression rather than the larger number VP offers.

I did as you requested and looked up horizontal progression and how it corresponds to vertical progression. I actually read through every topic that came up on the first page of Google, and I found this little nugget under the title “Horizontal Progression Options” and how to expand upon them:

Crafting
Allow players to discover legendary crafting recipes that can produce some of the best items, effects and features in the game. The ingredients would be a challenge to find and prepare, but the results could be comparable to running the most difficult content. All crafting systems – mining, blacksmithing, cooking, woodcrafting – would have these legendary recipes, so there is room for great variety in the items that could be created. It would take time and effort to both find the recipes and craft the items they contain.

Sound familiar?

As far as ESO, their idea of skill progression sounds interesting. However, if there are weapons and armor that can be found that augment damage, healing, whatever, and they create new weapons and armor that are better than what is in the game originally, then I believe that falls under vertical progression, so it exists even in your example. Of course, we won’t know that until the game is underway for at least few months, so only time will tell.

I stick to my original statement that vertical progression (either skill or gear) is a necessity in an MMORPG, unless you want there to be a point where people get bored and stop playing.

so lets talk about HotW since patch...

If you hadn’t said anything, I wouldn’t have even noticed a difference. I spent 5 minutes looking and didn’t see it. I would imagine that looking at the same character all the time would allow you to notice the differences easier. From just these pictures, though, the differences are slight.

Then again, I have trouble seeing minor changes to armor when I upgrade anyway. I suppose I just don’t pay that much attention to the detail.

Vertical progression has been around through the vast array of single player computer RPGs that have been made. Even if there were no levels in the RPG (something that is very rare to not have), there was still the equipment. Run around with a normal sword until the +1 sword comes along, and immediately swap to that because… it was better. Armor would get better, magic items would appear, allowing you to further progress to tougher and tougher creatures until you finished the last quest, thus ending the game.

Tabletop RPGs (PnP) were no different. Yes, there was actual roleplaying involved, and yes you’d get immersed in the world. However, there was always that tinge of excitement when you’d gain a level or find that item that made you more powerful. And even if you didn’t find the item, you could save up gold and… gasp buy that item. And why would you buy the item? Why, to become more powerful, of course! And eventually, you would complete the last quest and finish the campaign, retiring your hero as a champion of the world, or if unlucky, a dead hero or martyr.

Here’s the bottom line, folks. Vertical progression has existed throughout the RPG history. MMORPGs are no different when it comes to progression. There has to be a goal to achieve. In fact, since the MMORPG never really ends, one could say that vertical progression, either through skills or gear, has to be there. What other incentive could there be to continue playing the game? It is all about the power of the character… of achieving bigger and better things, if for no other reason than to go and kill the next big bad monster around the corner. Vertical progression is a necessity.

The argument of whether or not there should be vertical progression is moot. The way the vertical progression has been doled out, however, is a valid topic of debate. I personally don’t have an issue with how it’s been handled, but I can certainly see why others wouldn’t like it as much. I play the game for the enjoyment of playing all aspects of the game… even crafting. This style of progression doesn’t affect me. I do, however, know there are others that don’t enjoy crafting at all, and I agree that they shouldn’t be forced to do it.

There are Four Regions Time Zones in North America. Pacific, Mountain, Central, and Eastern.

No, there’s seven.

Alaska has its own time zone on the west, while in the east Atlantic Canada has the Atlantic Time Zone, and the island of Newfoundland has its own special half-hour difference Newfoundland Time Zone.

Technically, a handful of islands in Alaska belong to the Hawaii Time Zone, but adding that is a stretch, as would be adding Greenland’s time zone that’s past Newfoundland. For continental populated North America, we can say there’s the seven time zones.

This also doesn’t take into consideration that Arizona, which is considered in the mountain time zone, doesn’t recognize daylight savings time. For half of the year, Arizona’s time is the same as the Pacific Time Zone. The other half of the year is the Mountain Time Zone. I believe in some circumstances, Arizona is actually referred to as being in the Arizona Mountain Time Zone, which would theoretically make it time zone #8.

I am fully aware that the gear could be advantageous, and I will eventually have it. But it’ll be over the course of normal gameplay and not “grinding” for the gear. If it magically showed up in my bank box at some time, of course I’d wear it. But I don’t feel I need it to continue playing the game, regardless of what I’m doing, whether it’s PvE or WvW. I think my skill (or lack thereof) weighs more than the numbers.

I’m a mathematician by trade. Throwing that out there for information purposes.

I blame modern day television advertising for the argument that is going on over ascended gear.

“Buy Nike running shoes. You’ll run faster!”

I have never worried about gear in an MMORPG. At the end of the day, I still suck at the game. With ascended gear, I’d still suck.

You’d suck more in exotics.

Which means I’d die faster. Why prolong the inevitable? This is a time saver.

I’ll stick to exotics.

Why all the complaints?

What’s even funnier is the fact that you have people that complain about not enough content or the same old content, but then you see people complaining about the temporary content, fully knowing that if the temporary content was permanent content, it would be empty after a month anyway, and people would still be complaining about lack of content or the same-old content.

Condition Immunity?

I don’t have an issue with condition damage. In fact, I think it’s a rather important component in the combat. Conditions have been around since pen and paper roleplaying games (sleep, slow, hold person, etc.).

Account wide dyes

I’m sure I’m in the minority on this, but I actually like the system the way it is. If I get a duplicate dye, I have the option of either giving it to an alt or selling it. My characters are all completely different, and I’ll want different dyes on each one anyway, so I don’t really need to have the same dye pallet for each character.

But that’s just me.

PNGs are actually very good resolution pics. It’s not the file format. I use them everyday.

I’d like to see a list of MMORPGs that get their money solely from the box price and expansions. No subscription fee and no cash shop. And before it’s said, the original Guild Wars added a cash shop, so it doesn’t count. Besides, nobody can even say for sure it could be called a MMORPG.

the original guild wars 1 is never marketed as a MMORPG.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guild_Wars
“it was marketed as competitive online role-playing game.”

as for your request, no, that is not feasible at all.

it is not possible to sustain a MMORPG alone with just from starter box and expansion boxes.

the cash shop is required in order to sustain the game.

That’s pretty much the way I see it too. However, there are certain individuals that think it can be done. “The cash shop is the devil!!! Let me buy an expansion!!!”

It isn’t surprising that sales are up. The game is pretty much full on P2W now. If you don’t pay you will quickly fall behind other players.

Also the game still has had no competition to draw players away. Whatever report follows a few months after ESO and Wildstar release will be the one to watch for the real health of the game.

all claims of pay to win are invalid because gems can be bought using in game gold.

both games you mentioned require a monthly subscription.

the majority of guild wars 2 players play guild wars 2 due to the no monthly subscription system.

Not playing it lot. Hoping for better times. Don’t spend, never have spend and never will spend a dime on gems because I don’t want to support the destruction of the game.

I do talk about more things but if it’s gem-store related I do post this indeed. It’s what I see as the biggest problem for the game. Not so much the love for the expansions but the dislike for the influence the focus on the cash-shop has. But I told you that before many times.

And I am not surprised you are one of the gem-buyers. Thats how they design the game, pay to have fun. And you fall for it.

However no worries. I have said what had to been said. I said it long enough and often enough. I will not be posting much more on new threads. Will mainly react on comment on my comment and I will keep an eye on the CDI.

@Vol
As you see, TChalla is also aware I do have those same statement for a longer time. It’s not that I now say this because I want to be negative about it so I now say higher numbers are bad. It’s simply something I have been saying for a long time as TChalla’s reactions proofs.

You totally misunderstood what Vol was saying. But whatever.

As far as me “falling for” buying gems because I happen to enjoy the game as it sits, you can think what you want about it. I don’t have a problem buying things like extra bank slots, the extra bag slot or extra character slots. It beats having to pay a monthly subscription fee and also beats having to pay $60 for an expansion. I buy what I want and don’t buy what I don’t want.
