How do you deal with condi mesmers?

There have been a few specs thrown around here, so I guess you can do condi Memser many ways but the spec I know – and use with success – is Countless’ build. Off the top of my head it’s 10/20/10/0/20.

Specing into condi damage and then making clones dish out cripple, confusion and a random condi when they die hurts like a kitten. Not to mention the bleed on crit.

Basically the Memser wants to get in your face and blow up clones – either by you killing them or just by creating new ones.

So yeah, the best way to deal with these mesmers is to leave the clones alone and pressure the Memser. Kill the iDueliest and use LoS so the Memser can’t make more clones.

Some of you make it sound like once a thief goes into stealth that he’s not coming back.

Alright, I wasn’t going to post here, but I want to stop you all in your tracks in thinking that this post was in any way made or prompted by ArenaNet. That is simply not true.

It looks like Caine here is trying to reiterate things we have already messaged, but go largely ignored, as well as sharing his/her experience in the community.

Thank you all for taking the time to share your concerns.

You guys seem to be really proud of doing absolutely nothing. You reply to a lot of threads, sure, maybe you even send that feedback to the pvp devs. But does anything actually change in the game? Nope… so you keep on trying to fill us with false hope, simply throwing a red ANet reply into a thread isn’t going to fix the game. You guys fixing the game is going to fix the game.

But yeah guys, let’s keep it constructive and informative so we can continue going ignored while ANet agree’s with people like OP and imagine in their own little world the game is completely fine and they’ll take our suggestions ‘into consideration’ LOL.

My question is, why don’t the pvp devs take a moment out of their day to read the pvp forums themselves and realize what a plague and letdown spvp is. I mean, they obviously have no clue what the hell is going on so that would be a start.

There are countless, COUNTLESS threads with very constructive suggestions and even solutions to the problems with the game but apparently those don’t exist. I guess we’re delusional, guys.

It’s understandable that you’re frustrated with the lack of new or revamped items going into PvP, so am I! But to say the devs aren’t reading the forums is ignorant. They do come by, just take a look at the Dev Tracker subforum; Jonathan Sharp (the LEAD dev!) has visited these neck of the woods many times, and to a lesser extent – based on posts – Evan Lesh too.

Just as Allie pointed out in another thread not to long ago, the more time they are here, the less time they’re at their desk coding. I mean, that’s why she has a job, so they can keep going while she delivers the community feedback.

It’s OK to be frustrated, but use that in a constructive manner to help them change the game into something we want to play! :-)

This might sound harsh, but I will say it straight. GW2 is a business product. ANet and NCSoft get a lot of free advice from real customers. That is a sweet deal. If someone had the answer to making GW2 sPvP a raging success, then that knowledge would be worth millions, literally. It would probably cause noticeable worldwide economic growth in the esport emerging market, too, so there is more value in it than what ANet or NCSoft would get. I know key information about what prevents GW2 sPvP from becoming a major part of esport growth, and how to correct the deficiencies. What I know is enough to result considerable earnings for shareholders effected by the current value of GW2 sPvP. You will not see me write that information here, nor by any other means without a lucrative contract.

tldr – people know what to do, but it will not get done

There are two ways to see what happened in a battle. You can switch to the Combat tab in your chat panel or, after you die, you can click on then little icon that appears after your are defeated.

Expect to see a lot of bleeding ;-)

its just too obvious to me now, anytime pvp is worked on at all, even after a tournament where no changes happened, the forums erupt in incessant qq and theres always a key couple of posters who touch off the firestorm, and then everyone else jumps aboard the misery train. it seems they even have multiple accounts to post on. it has to be artificial.

everytime anet so much as breathes in the general direction of pvp the forums get flooded with qq tantrum threads with 300 replies of i quit, fire the devs etc. and you expect them to want to spend more of their valuable time on this aspect of the game which doesnt even generate revenue?

jon gives a much anticipated post and what happens? more qq, flaming bashing scoffing and bitter remarks. kitten if you think you can do such a better job by all means start your own game. as it stands hardly a one of you know a dam thing about programming so you have absolutely no clue what youre talking about when you QQ for nerfs or changes.

and i could give a crap less about what you paid. 60 dollars is basically 1 days pay. you paid anet 1 days pay, and now you think anet staff are slaves to your every emotional whim for all eternity.

i know the state of pvp isnt that great right now, but holy moly the pvp community is such a scathing bitter eternally unsatisfied mob who the heck would wanna do anything for you. everytime you get something you cry and whine and moan, even when you get something you ask for, the most positive gesture you make is silence.

Volrath have you read these forums? 85% of the posts here are toxic and terrible. If I were a dev, I wouldn’t want to spend time here either.

That’s the job of the Community Team; read between the lines and find the underlying problem for the PvP community. There have been quiet a few civil discussions on these forums.

I think ANet has it backwards. In my opinion – with all due respect – Allie needs help so when she can’t get on the forums someone else is here. That way more of the proper threads are read and the devs can do what they are paid to do.

I like this idea!

If tab targeting selects enemy players only then playing Mesmer becomes nearly impossible. At least this way you have to be looking at your target to select them.

I’m even down for tab targeting to stay the same as it is now but fix “Target Nearest Enemy” or make click targeting select players only.

Not to beat a dead horse but cheating and lag is solved by how Guild Wars 1 did the Observation Mode. Every time a top ranked team plays a match, one hour later the match is available for other players to watch.

What about just making more 5vs5 Hot Join matches? Or at least switch it so 5vs5 is on the top and 8vs8 is on the bottom.

I know the point of eight people was to minimise the impact of losing a player, but it’s a challenge to try to win 4vs5 or what not.

Besides 5vs5 Hot Join matches fill up quickly – even listed after the hundred 8vs8 matches.

At least the first experience someone has with Guild Wars 2 PvP is the way its meant to be played.

I wouldn’t say this game is hard per se. It looks easy when you watch pros play; just like other MOBA games.

I agree the learning curve for rotations is big. I have trouble catching myself on the wrong node. I end up getting tunnel vision for the kill for that particular cap point instead of going after the person taking my home node.

Gotta catch myself doing that :-P

Dishonored does count for that scenario, ThatShortGuy.4672. If a player never joins when the queue pops, they will receive dishonored.

That’s good to know! It does seem that the current Dishonoured system is not a big enough deterrent for the causal PvPer. You can blame the no-shows on the newness of Solo Q but, even with time, you’ll still see it happen — albeit on a smaller scale — as long as you can access the tournaments from anywhere in Tyria. Players will choose their current task, especially in PvE, over going to a totally different aspect of the game if queue times take more than a minute.

It’s invisible for a variety of reasons, none of which being that it’s “not good” as you put it.

Can you go over some of these reasons? I think it’s only fair to your players to explain why ArenaNet is hiding such an important number.

I Guess Solo Queue is True to it's Name

I think this problems stems from the idea you can queue up for Solo Q from anywhere in the game.

Take for example someone is roaming around PvE and queues up. Five minutes go by and they are still in queue and end up doing something worth while in PvE, say Fractals or something. Finally they get the notice that they got a Solo Q team but now they’re stuck with a choice: quit on their PvE team or ignore Solo Q. It’s easier to just queue up again after the Fractals run.

I’m not sure if Dishonored counts for this. Honestly I think something like districts GW1 in the Mists would work better; group all PvP players from all worlds together. That would make for a more active Mists.

EDIT: This is to say if you loaded into a 1vs5 and not 4 leavers.

Oh, so the “play now” button only joins you to the first server on the list with a free spot? It doesn’t do matching at all?

Only the solo arena/ team arena’s have match making. Hot joins are just rooms to mess around in. Play now just finds a server that has room.

It seems like a topsy turvey arrangement. As a new pvp player, tourney or team or whatever its called seems like its something you “graduate” to after playing hotjoin for a while, but it seems like you’d actually learn more from tourney games than getting constantly facerolled in hotjoin.

Unfortunately that is the case for Hotjoin.
Fear not there is a hidden feature called Hotjoin 5v5.
To find this, simply press filter, then choose 5 v 5 for team size and leave all maps turned on. Then on the left you will see the “Filter” which you can name in the filter window. Click that then click refresh and if the settings you input were correct then presto, 5v5 hotjoin. This Filter will be saved for the next time you want to play. The 5v5 match’s will show up as 10/10 slots, that’s due to 5 slots of spectators per team.

5v5 hotjoin is a little closer to solo que pvp as a stepping stone (no one will complain about you if you are new). 5v5 also have generally less zergy games.

Playing in a similar environment as tournaments will help you develop your skills as a player. You’ll learn to watch the minimap for contested points and start to see enemy patterns.

As a cheap substitute for the combat log you want there is the report after you’re defeated. It shows what damaged you the most to the least. You can even sort it by player.

Now here’s something I haven’t seen answered/asked:

SoloQ does the team that wins continue or have to requeue?
If the above is “continues” do they eventually get through into TeamQ, ala GW1 RA -> TA?

Your roster will disband once the match is over.

Is there a reason why? Seems more appropriate to keep the team together to encourage the feel of success.

If you keep the team together, then you’re not SoloQ-ing anymore, and you then have an unfair advantage over the other actual SoloQ players.

A marginal advantage at best…
It’s still the random people from SoloQ so not any coordinated than otherwise… at best its a number of good individually skilled players… but there is ranking to compensate for that.

It actually, imo, would be a great feature, especially if you started getting matched against other groups that have won roughly as much as you.

Yeah exactly. Work with you teammates to keep going. You may end up against a good group but that should make you want to work even harder to kick them out.

As for quitters, well, that’s always going to be an unfortunate situation and a reason for the /resign command to be implemented. But that’s a totally different topic.

in soloQ the only constant is YOU and this is the only way to give you a rating – when you are better than the average player you win more often cause you carry your team better – when not good your rating goes down – thats how it should work and will work

That doesn’t seem very team oriented to me. More points does not mean you are “better than the average player”. It means you where able to cap and kill more, sure, but what about those poor bunkers that are keeping home point for your team? Or that roaming thief that keeps catching the opposing team’s roamer off point?

Keeping the winning team going (and eventually putting them into team tournaments) would make people want to work together to win.

If the only person that matters is me, then what’s stopping me from zerging ? Or capping together? More points!

Maybe be more precise about what skills are usefull in stomping, necro for instance wont trait for a stomp.. ever.. the 1 sec stability is a poor example though ..(then again i an baised to necro’s) I never see a necro stomp in pvp btw…
also mention rasonable skills to use to stomp.

You can secure a stomp on a necro by blowing plague form.

Or Lich Form barring the bug that causes Stability to not be given. But the best bet is Plague Form or Well of Power.

Or just start the stomp, break it and dodge, then stomp for free :-D

I agree that GW2 needs a fun PvP mode that is still competitive, although a MOBA-type game just isn’t the way to do it. That would require a significant amount of work.

It’s been suggested before, so I’ll just link it. ArenaNet needs to implement a Heroes’ Ascent -type tournament.

Server numbers above 100 are 5v5 instead of 8v8. Try those instead. You can even create a filter to just show you 5v5 servers.

It was a fun match to watch. Grats to TP for the win. It was really close and CC held up their own. Don’t make your guild look bad by being a sore loser.

Grouch made many complaints during the qualifiers that no match are going to round three in a best of three. In order to make it more interesting, it was changed to a best of five. If a team had a problem with this, say something then, not when you lose.

but they forget gw2 is an mmorpg and has an mmorpg playerbase and still league of legends bring a new class every 2 weeks so ppl dont get bored^^

And they forgot who really did the LOLs map was the community from starcraft, same thing happened with half life and CS and now with arma 2 and dayz.

Players want to play what they want to play not what they are supposed to play.

There does seem to be a lot of LoL in GW2.

As for maps, that would be a cool contest. Players design maps and the community votes for the best one.

ArenaNet did this type of contest for GW1 weapons.

Tab targetting

I wouldn’t mind if they improved click targeting as well: Currently people are rolling small asuras and hiding INSIDE their pets (like Flesh golem), making them impossible to target since mouse selection picks the larger object. Mouse targeting should select the player if the pet and player are overlapping.

Honestly, if they fixed that, tab targeting could stay the way it is. It would be nice to have both improved, but mouse-targeting has a better skill:reward ratio in this case since it requires some hand-eye coordination compared to mashing tab furiously.

Agreed! Tab-targeting works the same way as it did in GW1; minions, pets and clones are all enemies thus targetable.

Mouse-targeting is the problem. Even if it looks like I’m clicking on an enemy the game doesn’t select them.

I’m pretty much forced to cycle through everything with tab.

Making PVP profitable

Cosmetic pieces are the only way to go to make more money for ArenaNet – and they’re already doing that.

The money for competitive Pvp games come from cash reward tournaments. Tornies with a money on the line serve as advertisement and fame for participants. They encourage more people to pick up the game with the thought they will one day compete for money and a name for themselves.

Let’s see how this tournament at PAX goes because I think ArenaNet is onto something (balance issues aside).

Also "4v5"s don’t happen in most sports. The game is usually forfeited.

Counterpoint: unprofessional leagues usually have some kind of mercy rule. And the vast majority of games played are not professional games, so /resign is appropriate.

You should not be allowed to resign in a major tournament on a professional level. But for day to day, /resign is a good idea.

For those that think /resign will encourage rage quitting, I think you’r underestimating the competitive nature of many players in PvP. It was never abused in GW1, and it gave teams with a disconnected player to quickly leave and reform.

What ANet does Right.

1. Each class is unique

2. Combat is fluid and responsive

3. ANet doesn’t crank up the numbers

4. PVP maps are varied

5. ANet listens to the 95% rather than the 5%

1: Agree.

2: Not always, there is still this bug that stops your character when pressing W, some animation or physics bug. Effects are sometimes way too flashy, blocking view of enemy “animations”. Some abilities have improved but still suffer sometimes from “overruning” like Bullrush fails ect. But overall its good I agree.

3: No comment.

4: Not really, yeah they have different layout so there is difference but gamemode is same.

5: I have no idea who they listen or not so no comment.

Overall, I came back to Gw2 after Blizzard totally went apekitten with their PvP and BG’s full of bots and I have to say there is good improvement from last time I played (months and months ago). I guess give it time things get even better, yeah I have Norn optimism.

Bang on there. When the combat system relies heavily on watching what your opponent is doing and other players around you are casting skills too it becomes tough to see what your target is doing with all the other partial effects going on.

Back on-topic though, after much hate for no auto-approach and slowly learning how to watch the battlefield I’ve come to enjoy the experience of sPvP in GW2. Dodging is an awesome mechanic and so is being able to jump to higher places to get above your enemies (side rant: I do wish teleport skills used more of a line-of-sight mechanic then if I’m on the same X-axis as my target).

Overall though, I rant because I want competitive PvP in GW2 to be successful. GW1 PvP turned out amazing, but the game was based around it so ArenaNet had no choice but to keep it updated. In GW2, they have the option to overlook sPvP — not saying they are as I bet many ArenaNet employees want GW2 have as many Twitch views as LoL — but they are definitely not allocating a lot of resources to its improvement or the more likely situation: they are over-analyzing any change suggested (theirs or ours) for “balance”.
