Duo Roaming - Mesmer/Thief or Thief/Thief

in WvW

Posted by: The Baws.5164

The Baws.5164

Hey everyone,

Me and my friend plan on duo roaming a lot, but I’m not sure which class to play – Mesmer or Thief.

I like both of them and I keep thinking that Thief/Thief would be stronger due to superior map travel and cross-stealth, but a lot of people seem to say that Mesmer/Thief is better.

Hence me coming on here and asking you all for your opinions as you’re probably much more experienced in WvW than me.

Also what we plan on doing, if this helps, is ganking people, as well as taking out Dolyaks and duo flipping camps.

Thanks,
The Baws.

Yeahhh

I love Mesmer lol and I was worried it would be bad with my Thief friend. Time to go level mine xD

Oh and one more quick thing, are they wanted for Arah/FotM much? I would play Guardian but they are soooo face-roll boring that I find Mesmer is way more fun.

Hey everyone,

I came here to these Forums to ask for your opinions on whether a Mesmer/Thief Roaming Duo would work well in WvW. We’re both not too experienced players but we work well together and we want to become better players.

Would Mesmer/Thief work decently well in WvW for things like killing Dolyaks, and just trolling up-levels?

Thanks loads,

I understand the mechanics of both classes but I was simply looking for an opinion from someone who does Fractals and Arah a lot… And whether they felt a Guardian or a warrior would be better for doing them.

Oh and another quick thing, don’t go for what people call ‘OP’ or ‘FotM’ etc. etc.

All of that stuff changes so quickly it’s pretty stupid and often it’s not even accurate. People just hear others QQ’ing and hop on the QQ train.

Pick a class you’ll like and it will be the most powerful class you’d ever imagined.

Cooking. Like said above.

Cheapest, pretty easy, and quick 10 levels.

Otherwise you could just level. It’s not exactly hard and it’s better as if you ever want to go for map completion etc. you’ll be screwed on the character that you levelled via crafting.

Yeah I agree with what ozmanian said. On my new 80s that I level up I just use some of the money I got from levelling to buy a set of exotics on them, and then I find what armor I like the look of and transmute it.

It cuts out a lot of boring CoF runs…

Uhm yeah there are a few ways to get decent money without doing stuff like boring grinding. 20g is a good amount once you’ve just hit 80 btw.

So here are my main ways of getting money. They’re not all the best ways (which are normally grinding etc.) but I find that they’re a bit of fun and they also don’t interrupt what I’m doing too much:

Doing large group events in Orr. Join a guild and whenever anyone says ‘Shatterer up’, ‘Maw (pre) up’, ‘Jormag up’, or anything like that. Basically anything with the word ‘up’ after it lol, that will be a big event. These are bosses around the map and when you kill them you get a rare or an exotic. Also you get a chest which gives you another rare or exotic as well as some cash and some Karma.

Carry gathering tools with you everywhere you go. Just going around collecting them all is great.

Do dungeons such as Citadel of Flame and ones which you enjoy/want the gear for. They nerfed Citadel of Flame speed-running which was a way to get loads of gold, but that doesn’t really matter. Dungeons give good gold, good loot, and also tokens for great looking gear.

P.S. don’t buy that gear off the Trading Post. Maybe you have a friend in-game who has 400 blacksmithing? Ask them to make the gear for you when you give them the mats. It will be so much cheaper.

Also, you probably already have 3/4 of the mats if not all of them. Go to the bank and click the collectibles tab on the left-hand side of the window. That’s all the stuff you’ve deposited. Use it or sell it, your choice.

Well that’s all I have

Have fun.

Oh and also events normally give a bunch (by events I mean Queen’s Jubilee etc.) because ANet like to award you for doing them so check them out if you want.

Warrior or Guardian - Grinding Arah/FotM

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: The Baws.5164

Basically the title,

I have an 80 fully geared Warrior at the moment but I don’t mind levelling up a Guardian. I plan on using it for grinding dungeons such as Arah and FotM, as well as some CoF and a few other dungeons like CoE and CM.

So any ideas?

Which is better in general for these things which I’ve said? I really wont be using them for anything else other than this so no need to worry about that.

Build wise I would go Berserker Warrior or a Bunker/DPS Hybrid. None of that berserker Guardian bs lol.

Thanks,

I’ve come back to this yet again…

Grr… Mesmer seems so awesome but so does Thief. Do they both have a similar Skill Ceiling?

So this is exactly what I want to do – Do loads of Fractals, get the back piece and as much Ascended gear as possible, then do a bunch of Arah to get the armor skins that I want, then go Roam in WvW by myself or with a Thief friend of mine.

Which proff would you say would be better for those things? I honestly find both classes really fun, like the long range sniping and AoE of Mesmers as well as the stealth of Thieves.

After looking at what you said, I’d either try Guardian, Ranger or Necromancer.

Guardian is possibly the strongest class at the moment, just due to the fact that it fits into everything well. They are very versatile, as they can be a bunker (high survivability, little damage), support people, take conditions off others and bring them to themselves, but they can also be offensive and do good damage as well as still supporting.

Ranger is one of the classes that people like to say are bad, as well as Thieves, when in reality they are pretty kitten good when played well, which is the same as Thieves. Rangers do good damage and are arguably the best class for soloing PvE content. They’re also prettyyy good in WvW, but you know, not the best. They are often considered weak in dungeons and group content however, so if you want to play one, make sure to learn the class well and prove yourself to guildies etc. that you can do runs with.

Necromancer is a very strong profession and was called ‘OP’ a lot until a few recent changes. They are the masters of conditions, them and thieves, and have really some pretty incredible crowd control. They have a high health pool (highest in the game normally) easily reaching 28k health (a lot when compared to something like a squishy Thief with 12k or so) and they also have good damage.

Necromancers are good in PvE group content, but then again, not considered to be the best. The real let down point of them is poor mobility and this is why they are not used for Roaming much (going around by yourself maybe with a few friends in WvW and killing people) as you get caught out a lot.

Personally I like Professions which I like to consider a bit more of a challenge, like Mesmer and Thief. The problem with Thief in particular is that a lot of people consider them to be useless or weak in PvE, whereas in reality unless they’re played well they are.

After re-reading your comments, I think you should really try Guardian and Warrior as no.1, as they have both good Damage, Survivability and ranged alternatives. Warrior is much more offence-oriented, whereas guardian is more defence-oriented.

Picking a class really isn’t too much of a tricky thing though, yet I’m still trying to decide myself as to what I want to make my main xD

I recommend going on Twitch TV or YouTube and looking up some just general game play videos in WvW Roaming etc. This is due to the fact that WvW Roaming often allows you to see aspects to a class that you don’t see in PvE, as WvW Roaming is harder and a different type of gameplay.

Just check out videos and look for a class that when you see them being played you go ‘Oh that looks cool’ or ‘that playstyle looks pretty awesome’.

I’ll give you a quick rundown of the playstyles just in case you don’t know them already (these all vary due to builds etc.):

Guardian: Front-line (offensive) or back-line (support), usually pretty tanky, decent damage, lots of boons and support-oriented buffs. Absolutely essential to almost all areas of play. Highest survivability in game, either burst them down instantly or they’ll be up forever…

Warrior: Front-line or ranged, high damage, high health pool, not too much survivability (not as much as Guardian), offensive banners/shouts such as Fury and Might (more damage for your group basically). Most played profession I’d say and I have one… bit boring but fastest to level.

Ranger: Back-line for a normal longbow build but they’re boring IMO. You want to go a greatsword spirit Ranger. If you want to play one, prepare for the rockiest and weirdest levelling experience but when mastered they are one hell of a profession in WvW Roaming.

Thief: Stealth, highest burst in the game (single target), super squishy if you want high damage, super-fun (in my opinion), super high-risk high-reward. (My favourite class if you couldn’t tell from all of the superlatives lol.)

Mesmer: Hard to play, button mashing, combination of great group utility as well as decent DPS. They are wanted in a lot of PvE content due to amazing support abilities. My second favourite profession as they are pretty good in PvE as well as being amazing in 1v1 and Roaming when played well.

Engineer: Versatile and hard to master, many different aspects to them, lots of conditions (equal to Thief I’d say), have really come into the light lately, they were considered weak and now they’re considered great lol. Same as Thief/Ranger, when played poorly they are considered very weak in PvE content.

Elementalist: Basically the same as Engineer. Lots of aspects to them. Look up combo fields and you’ll understand.

Necromancer: Stay at the back, apply conditions, kite a bunch.

P.S. If you want more answers to class-specific stuff, go on the Profession’s Forum Sub-Section and make a thread there.

Also, sorry about all of the comments about WvW Roaming… it’s basically all I like doing lol. I do Dungeons etc. for the gear.

Warrior or Thief?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: The Baws.5164

The Baws.5164

I have both at 80 and it depends…

I go on my Warrior for an easy(ish) cruising kinda experience. For Zergs they make a great front line with Guardians, and it’s just pretty easy you know, bull’s charge into hundred blades etc.

Good damage, and it’s what I use for farming CoF as farming CoF doesn’t get much faster than 4xZerker Warrior and 1xZerker Mesmer.

Thief on the other hand is completely different. It’s extremely fast-paced, high-risk high-reward gameplay, and I’m saying this in comparison to my berserker Warrior…

Low health pool but very high damage, many different mechanics and also a lot more of ‘Wtf?’ for enemies in WvW lol. I find Thief to be much more fun, but in the general scheme of things harder and worse at PvE.

So, to sum it up:

Warrior for: PvE in general (different dungeons have different requirements), Cruising around, general decent gameplay, good damage, high healthpool (24k on my glass cannon), and pretty easy experiences overall.

Thief for: WvW Roaming, trolling, having a faster paced gameplay, high-risk high-reward.

There’s a reason people hate Thieves

A few questions about Server Leaderboards.

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: The Baws.5164

The Baws.5164

Hey everyone,

I just saw the stuff about Guild Leaderboards for WvW, and I realised my server (Underworld) is 17th in Europe, and Tier 6 (whatever that means).

Is this bad/good?

I plan on doing WvW a lot but don’t want to be on a bad server for doing it. I’ve been on Underworld since moving from Sanctum of Rall on the US, but the ping was too high and my Shadowstep lagged which I hated, hence me moving to EU.

I mean I guess I can change server to something like Seafarer’s Rest but it’s so expensive and it will be hard to persuade like 8 friends who I play with to transfer too…

So could someone give me some insight about what Tier 6 etc. means, and basically answer my queries :P

Thanks loads,

Well… my play style isn’t really one which is set in Guild Wars 2 (as far as I’m aware), as I like just generally trolling, and annoying people xD I also really like strong duelist classes.

But as far as the difference in Thief and Mesmer play-style go, to me there don’t seem to be many. They both seem to disorient/confuse people, then use that to their benefit.

And about people saying ‘Thieves are broken’ etc., does this mean they’re going to get even MORE nerfs?

Yeah it exists, it’s called Crafting.

You can get to 80 through Crafting in ~ 8 hours but it costs a tremendous amount of gold and can therefore not do it on a first account.

Ok,Necro or Thief?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: The Baws.5164

The Baws.5164

Necro – Conditions and good damage as well as great in WvW Zergs but not very sought after in dungeons and bad in roaming due to very poor mobility.

Thief – Incredibly high mobility, as well as poor Zerg skills but the best roaming skills in the game.

Depends on what you want to do.

WvW: Zerging? Necro. Roaming? Thief.

PvE? Necro… but Thief is probably just behind Necro.

Honestly though what it all boils down to? What you want more and enjoy playing more.

Thief is a high skill-cap, very squishy, high burst, high mobility class which excels in 1v1s and small group combat in WvW.

Necro on the other hand is a class which excels in sustained damage, conditions and Zerging.

You will not beat a good Thief in a 1v1. But then again you will not be an effective Zerg against a great Necro.

Do you want to be lone wolf or do you want to be a master of the dead?

The Baws.5164

Yeah, before 80 when you’re following some specific build it doesn’t really matter…

General rule: Levels 1-10 go for Power… it’s just overpowered at low levels.
The rest of it is just what you find you want…

Need more up front spell damage and atk damage? Power…
Need more health? Vitality…
Need more armor/survivability? Toughness…

It all goes on but don’t worry about it too much. But of course go for things which suit your class well:

Guardian – Toughness, Elementalist – Power/Condition Damage, Necro – Condition Damage, etc. etc.

WoW to GW2

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: The Baws.5164

The Baws.5164

I used to play WoW for 3 years, and this game is pretty similar in a lot of ways.

PvP:

There are 3 PvPs – sPvP, tPvP, and WvW.

sPvP is the one where you click on the PvP icon at the top of the screen and click ‘Go To Heart of the Mists’. Here, you choose a match to join from the guy standing on the plinth to the left of the entrance.

Everyone has the same gear here, and is made to be an eSports type mode, where only skill matters.

Then there is tPvP, basically the same as Arenas in WoW… not much different there.

Then there is WvW (it’s actually WvWvW but no one calls it that.) WvW is where 3 servers are pitted against each other on a huge map and it’s a whole load of fun when you get your head around it. It’s pretty complicated as it’s like an entirely new game mode, but this video explains a lot: http://www.twitch.tv/guildwars2/c/2528296

It’s made by some devs. Anyway, the gear for WvW is carried in from the PvE world. So, you get what gear you want by grinding dungeons etc. in the PvE world, then when you go to WvW, you have the same stats.

Note: You can go to WvW when you are level 1, as well as sPvP, but with WvW as you are level 1 you won’t have the same stats as the level 80s, so even though you are levelled up you will be much weaker.

Levelling Up/Quests:

There are 4 main aspects to levelling up: Story Quests, Dynamic Events, Hearts and Exploration/Gathering etc.

Story Quests: These are your story quests. They are always in the Top Right of your screen, and have the level of the question in brackets. They give you a good deal of XP, so make sure to do them when you’re the right level. You can see how to get there by following the Green Swirl on the map.

Dynamic Events: These turn up on the map when you are near them. They occur all over Tyria (the name of the world in Guild Wars) and give a great deal of XP. They’re all pretty simple and very self-explanatory. Big orange circle on the map signifying where they are.

Hearts: You see these everywhere, and they are gold-outlined Hearts on the map. When completed, they become solid Gold, and there is then a person who will sell you something in exchange for Karma points once the heart is completed. These will make up the majority of your Levelling XP.

Exploration/Gathering: Exploration and Gathering are highly rewarded in this game. Not only do you get XP for doing them both, but when you get 100% in an area, you get big rewards, and map completion means even bigger rewards and a title (‘Been There, Done That.’) Also, when you gather things you will need to buy Axes, Pickaxes and Sickles from a vendor (stack of coins on minimap). If your axe/pickaxe/sickle is too bad, then you will not get the ore or whatever it is you’re gathering.

Note: You can deposit these gathered materials at any time by clicking the cog in the inventory, and clicking “deposit all collectibles.”

Dungeons:

Dungeons in Guild Wars have two different modes: Story and Explorable.

Story mode is, quite predictably, the story mode, where you will be talked through the story behind why the dungeon is there etc.

Explorable mode is a mode where you have different paths to go down in a dungeon. All of the paths are different to the Story mode paths, and when you complete them you get 60 tokens per path. These tokens can be exchanged for Exotic armor. You can view this armor at the Port Marriner waypoint in Lion’s Arch.

Major Note: Find a friendly guild on your server and I’m sure they’ll be happy to answer any questions you have.

General Notes:

Lion’s Arch is like World of Warcraft’s Dalaran (or at least when I played… basically where most people go.)

This game, at least to me, seems to have a lot more depth than World of Warcraft in the combat. There are huge amounts of combo fields and loads of stuff, but that’s all just something you learn in time so don’t worry about it.

Your daily achievement is something that you should aim to complete. It’s normally really easy but tedious, but when you complete it you get some nice rewards (Money, XP, a Mystic Coin (used for crafting legendary weapons), and Karma (a currency which is not gold, and can only be used at vendors.)

P.S. don’t use your Karma jugs when you get them unless you need to. Save them up in your bank and open them all when you have a Karma booster activated, as well as all the Karma boosting items that you can find (Guild Banners in Lion’s Arch). This way you’ll get up to about 70% more Karma from each jug!

Have fun.

N.B. the stuff I’ve said is all pretty generalised, so make sure to get in contact with a guildy or someone who is happy to help at will.

Getting Bored of GW :(

Hey everyone,

You might have guessed from the title what this thread is going to be about… I’m getting a bit bored of Guild Wars 2.

What I really want is to find a class which is good, and just stick with it, learn loads about it, master it, gear it and just play the fk out of it, but I just can’t seem to find a class which is what I like.

So here I am trying to ask you guys a few questions.

What do you reckon I should do to try and find it a bit more fun?

What events are there to do which are a bit of fun?

The only dungeons I’ve done are CoF and AC. Are there any others which are fun and you recommend?

Is there a class which is pretty all around good and allows for a good amount of mastering? I liked Thief but then I tried PvE’ing with it and found it so weak.

I then looked around and made a Berserker Warrior which does great damage yeah but my god is he boring…

So what class would you say is fun and good in Zergs, small group fights, and decent at PvE when mastered?

I’ve been looking at the Light classes mainly lately, but also Engineer, Ranger and Guardian… basically every class except Thief/Warrior lol…

So… all opinions are greatly appreciated as honestly I just have no idea what to do.

This really hit me when someone told me a basic combo field (Smoke + heartseeker) to get Stealth on my Thief, and I’ve been playing him for hundreds of hours and I don’t even know much about him, nor the game itself.

I’m going to gear my Thief up for WvW Roaming that’s a definite, but what are Elementalists like for WvW and Arah/Fractals?

I currently have one at level 40 but she is an absolute pain in the kitten to level…

Yeah, well the only reason why I’m playing a Thief is for duo WvW Roaming with my Thief friend, but if they’re not that great then I’ll just make my Guardian do it or maybe make a Necro or Mesmer.

Ah right, thanks.

I personally like using D/D and I don’t really mind what the other weapon set is, but I am open and have heard that after nerfs/buffs and patches, D/P and S/D is better, so I’m open to be honest.

Also I currently have no pieces of Ascended but plan on getting full ascended rings, accessories, and ascended back. Basically every piece possible of Ascended gear.

I want a build which allows me to do good damage and have sufficient survivability, but not survivability in a toughness/armor sense, as in skills etc. as I really want to master Thief and make it my main for WvW.

Hey everyone

I’m looking for a Thief Build which is based around WvW Roaming.

Stealth based, and high damage, not condition damage or anything like that.

So please could you link one below if you know of a good one.

Many thanks,
The Baws.

And what about Engineer?

Where do they stand in WvW Roaming, Zerging and PvE?

Oh and another thing, what are Engineers like for what I said above for Guardian (PvE and Zerging)?

I never really considered one that much to be honest but after seeing the Grenade 1500 Range thing on a glass cannon engineer hitting for like 3k they seem pretty awesome…

Woah!

Loads of replies, thanks loads.

I think I’ve figured it out – I’m going to level a Guardian mainly for PvE and Zerging etc., but will also gear my thief for Roaming I was just thinking about me and my friend jumping out of Stealth on some poor glass cannon elementalist xD

Thanks.

Hey everyone,

I made a similar post to this in the Players Helping Players Forum, but I figured this would be a better place to put it, as all of you guys probably know more about WvW.

So… here’s my question:

If I plan on gearing up, doing Arah, Fractals, and a bunch of WvW Roaming with my Thief Friend, would you say I would be better off playing a Thief, Mesmer, Necro or Guardian?

I know it’s not a very limited selection lol but I’ve tried all four of the classes, and they all seem to offer what I really want: To be able to master them and just really main them.

Thanks loads for all help given,
The Baws.

either a Mesmer, a Guardian, or a Thief.

Hmmz, the class I would suggest isn’t even listed..

/thread

Alright, well it would be appreciated if you could say what that class is, and reasons why instead of just saying a completely useless response like that…

I’ve also been thinking about Fractals and Arah and I know that Guardian does well in these settings so I’ve been thinking about running one of them.

Slightly unrelated note: What are Necromancers like at the moment for what I’ve said? I tried one out and they seem really really fun.

God… my disgusting bolds lol…

Ignoring that… xD

Guardian, Thief and Mesmer is basically what I’ve been stuck with in my head through the last few days.

I guess I’m just going to have to play them to find out which one I like but it’s so kitten time consuming…

Hmm… I would go straight for Guardian but they have such low mobility, and if I get caught by a Zerg I’m basically screwed, and this is what leads me to Thief. The problem is, that I get differing stories everywhere I go.

So many people say Thief is OP, UP, and everywhere in-between that it’s ridiculous lol. I have an 80 Thief but I’ll only spend the money and time to gear it if I feel like it’s worthwhile… any tips on build etc.?

Is Guardian worth rolling for WvW?

Yes but I’m talking about Roaming…

I’ve been thinking about this quite a lot and I think I’m going to make both a Mesmer and a Guardian.

Starting with the Mesmer, as I really want to master it, whereas I find that Guardian is a bit simpler but I think I will prefer PvE’ing with the Guardian.

Hey everyone,

I’ve been asking myself this question quite a bit over the last few days, and I am trying to decide between whether to level up, gear, and master either a Mesmer, a Guardian, or a Thief.

I plan on making this character my main and having the best gear on them, so I plan on doing Fractals, and a bit of Arah on them, as well as the main purpose that I’m making them: WvW Roaming with a friend. I enjoy trolling and picking off/annoying my enemies, if that helps.

So which class would you recommend for this purpose?

I currently have a Zerker Warrior which I do CoF etc. on so that’s not really a problem, this character is purely for the reasons above.

Many thanks,
The Baws.

P.S. this is assuming a Roaming build is followed etc.

About this roaming thing, I’ve really taken to it recently, just running around WvW with my Friend and annoying people xD

I’ve found what seems to be a decent Roaming build (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ad2oZjIuKX0) not sure if the forums allows links… so just search ‘Gw2 commando build guardian’ on YouTube if not…

Anyway, this lead me to the question that I’ve been asking myself loads over the last couple of days: Mesmer, Thief or Guardian for WvW Roaming?

I really want to master one of them and gear them up well etc., but I only really have enough time to do that for one of them, never mind my sanity…

All opinions appreciated. Cheers.
