Hmm, picking apart WvW data, I’m realising that it may be more imperative to make it clear where the cases of integer values as strings are than I thought, and not just for sorting purposes (which I do agree makes sense, by the way ).

“matches.json” is returning the world IDs of each belligerent as true integers, where other JSONs return world IDs as strings.

Similarly, “match_details.json” returns objective IDs as true ints as well, but again, in the objective names JSON, that’s returned as a string.

Boy, did I almost fall backside over breast with that one. O___O’

[EDIT] Added recipes, events and WvW. If I’ve made a total screwup job of those, feel free to perform the second stage of the fish slapping dance on me.

[EDIT EDIT] And I will take some time out some time this week to compare mine and Dr. Ishmael’s for discrepancies. At the moment I don’t feel too awake to do an adequate job of it.

Added. That, and “Junk” x_X
Thanks for that.

Here is an obvious question: Shouldn’t this documentation be provided by ArenaNet for the usage of their api?

I’d be inclined to agree with you. Seems a little odd to just toss it out there without providing some info on how the data is structured.

I had chosen not to do that in my version because, unless I’m unaware of something, there’s not really any reason to convert them, is there?

Not really, no. Especially if you want a uniform interface. However, knowing they’re integers behind the scenes can be valuable contextual knowledge (you could choose to convert them if you wanted to, and it will be well-defined).

That is a good point. o_O

O_O

I’ve had a quick glance over yours. I didn’t think to split out the shared elements into a separate code block (which might have spared me some hassle, really) and I’ve noticed you’d commented that the ID numbers were ints as well. I had chosen not to do that in my version because, unless I’m unaware of something, there’s not really any reason to convert them, is there? I probably should have anyway. Fail on my part.

And clearly, my use of terminology is pretty sloppy too. :\

Ahoy there.

I’m currently trying to wrap my head around the GW2 API before I can even begin to use it. In the process, picked away at data pulled from the item details JSON and tried to lay out all I’ve found in a manner that might make it easier to understand. Largely for my own benefit, but it might be of use for others (if they can even make sense of it) o.O

You can find my efforts so far here: Clicky

Everything is indented to show what’s nested where. Hopefully it’s understandable and makes some semblance of sense. There are a few bits of data that are incomplete in there (pretty sure there are more attributes, for example), and any gap-filling would be appreciated.

Rapier Swords/Sabres and Name Change

Raine, we are talking about a sequel to a game that featured a rapier on a piece of commonly-used promotional artwork (even if such a weapon didn’t actually appear in-game). Additionally, I have a GW2 art card (“The Thief Queen” by Horia Dociu) that features a rapier.

Personally, I think it would be a great weapon skin for sword-capable light armour professions. And, on rare occasions, heavy armour characters with a sense of class. :P

Now with that said also realize that I would rather have Arena Net work on stuff like bugs or glitches or actual problems or balancing issues in the game before new skins and names for weapons.

Pretty sure the staff behind weapon skin art and implementation have nothing to do with any of those unless they actually affect weapon and player appearance. In fact this should almost go without saying, to be honest. :\

I’m assuming your referring to my comment about it being a fantasy game and with that you misunderstood me. I’m totally on board for sabers/rapiers to make a debut. What I didn’t want to see are uniforms from the 15th-16th century as the OP stated. I’d rather see what creative fantasy armor some of the artists could come up with to compliment such weapons.

So I did. Sorry. x_X
Now, I shall make a bee-line for the kettle, because clearly I need to wake up. >_>

Nice idea. Could even be expanded to roll multiple dice in a single command, for example “/roll 6 6 6 6” for four six-sided rolls.

I’ve never thought it to be a problem (and personally quite like it myself), but I can understand if it is for others. I second Nefaria’s idea of making its visibility outside of Ctrl+Shift+H an option rather than just getting rid.

Chat macros and demo recording/playback.

I requested text macros as soon as the suggestions forum opened. I am used to having them in MUDs. Granted, my keyboard and mouse let me create quite a few of them, but not nearly enough for all of the different text phrases I regularly generate while RPing.

D’oh, sorry. I had searched for a similar suggestion before I posted, but nothing seemed to come up.

Chat macros and demo recording/playback.

The Pointless.3869

A couple of things, the first might be beneficial for game play while the second is not so much, but might help to draw more creative types to the game.

Chat macros – by this I mean something similar to what another NC release, the soon-to-be-late City of Heroes, had. A player could type out a small piece of code to automatically post a string to chat, execute an emote or both, all at the press of a user-mapped button or the click of an icon, and give it a short name to identify it.

Personally, I’ve been in many a situation where I’ve found myself needing to say something quick, but not being able to type it out fast enough before it’s too late, even in a more shorthand format. For example, completing an event, only for everyone to disappear just as the next part of the chain is about to start. Try typing even “next event!” before everyone’s disappeared from [Say] range. >_<

Further examples being “Hold on, I’ll rez you!” when you stumble across a defeated player or “Someone go protect the south thingie!” during the Megadestroyer event chain and the like.

In PvP and WvW, it can be used to issue quick orders (again, try asking people for help to try and cap a point while you’re busy trying to stay alive) else, but this might be seen as an unfair advantage, so I can understand if everyone’s against it.

The other idea, again from CoH and extremely wishful thinking (I’m sure there are far more pressing priorities right now), is a demo recording system that records the goings on in your immediate area – camera, character positions and customisation, movement, skill execution and emotes etc – and stores them as a script in a text file that can be played back by the client even while offline.

You’re probably thinking
“What’s the point?”
“You can’t share it with everybody!”
“Why not just use FRAPS?”
I say “What if FRAPS fails the first time, or you accidentally disable it?” :P

As City used its own scripting code for demos, the demo file was easily (relatively) modifiable by users. For example, have you just recorded an epic fight, but the player camera doesn’t do it justice? Rewrite the camera co-ordinates and angles to place it somewhere more dramatic. It doesn’t stop there, either. It could enable the creation of machinima too. Not convinced? Look up the likes of “samuraiko” on YouTube, many of her vids expertly created using CoH ’s demo system.

wont happen cos of idiot trolls. EVER, trust me on this.

There’s this and there’s also the possibility of accidentally knocking a foe you needed to kill off a bridge for any reason. As awesome as throwing people off cliffs sounds, it’s not too great if they land in water or don’t take as much fall damage as you’d counted on. Oh and they’re out of the range of your bow/gun too.

Personally I’d just prefer it if monsters weren’t able to knock players off cliffs, but =shrug=.

If they ‘accidentally’ fall in the water, what’s keeping you from jumping in after ’em and finishing ’em off?

Fair point, but what if it’s right in the aggro range of another mob?

There’s already a 4-page thread on this here just so you know.

Couldn’t agree more, though. If Win8 and the alarming path it’s potentially set itself on isn’t a big enough signal that larger-name developers and publishers should seriously consider supporting one of the few remaining open systems, I don’t know what is.

With Windows 8 shaping up to be a bit of a shocker, Metro interface chiefly to blame, this may become a necessity!

Windows 8 is fine, I’m running GW2 on it right now and no issues what so ever.

The problem isn’t Win8’s ability to run GW2, it’s the fact that not only has Microsoft been so obsessed with creating a tablet OS that some users might think Desktop Mode was an afterthought but they’ve also put Windows on the potential path to eventually becoming a closed system, a fear expressed by a number of software developers of late.

I agree the voice acting seems, well, disinterested and completely lacks any of the vigour that the male voice carries, and I’ll also add that her flavour lines are just dull.

In place of lines like “Bow to me in my progress!” and “I will explore all of it!” you get “It’s over.” and “New land… NEW LAND!” which just makes her sound like an inexperienced little girl. o.O

Can’t say I’ve considered her voice old or manly, though. Norn are physical giants, after all.

A little more G-series love?

The Pointless.3869

Since the Beta Weekend Events at least, the game has supported the display on Logitech’s G-Series keyboards, offering World Completion, live character stats and WvW data (when you’re actually in a WvW zone). And combat data, which seems a little… funky, to say the least. It’s currently telling me I hit a Firefly with Whirling Axe when I’m pretty sure I was cutting a mob of Separatists before making this post.

Thing is, while these screens are all well and good (I love the World Completion screen), it’s all a bit basic on the G19 and I don’t think it’s seen much in the way of improvement since then. I wouldn’t mind seeing a little more functionality, something like – in the case of the full-colour G19 at least:

  • the minimap
  • skill bar
  • a set of chat channels (possible G15 screen?)
  • achievement tracking (that Hero Window’s pretty herr-oooj and non-resizable) (also another possible G15 screen)
  • contacts and guild roster
  • more detailed personal character attributes and stats (the current version only seems to show effective attributes and HP), along with equipped gathering tools.

I realise and understand that this may be pretty low on the list of ANet’s priorities right now (if on that list at all), even more so considering it only caters to those who actually own a G-series, but I think if a game’s going to support a device it would be nice to see said device used to its fullest potential.
