Guild Wars 2 on 2008 Mac Pro?

in Account & Technical Support

I’ve been thinking about buying this game for a friend for Christmas but wanted to make sure it would run on his machine first.

Anyone know if GW2 would run on a 2008 Mac Pro with two 3.2 ghz 8 core intel processors, an nvidia 8800gt and 12 gigs of ram? If it will run on that machine anyone know how well it will run?

Thanks

I play on a quad-core 2.66 GHz Mac Pro with Radeon 6870 video card. I purposefully set the game’s frame limiter setting to 30 (because your human eyes & brain don’t need more than that) and medium graphic details (because I don’t care any more than that when I’m busy playing a game). I am very satisfied with the performance.

I personally do not want new content

We want the content that is already here fixed and working as intended.

I know that the need for Gem Store sales and to try and to convince more people into spending $60 for a broken game is important too, but unless you want to suffer huge levels of bad publicity, you need to just throw your arms up, admit you kittened up and get to fixing everything FIRST.

Agree. I’ve been playing casually for several months. My character just recently reached level 60. I have 22% of the world explored. I’ve no interest in racing to level 80, consuming every map as quickly as I can and exhausting my $60 spent with nothing else to do. I’m very much enjoying time well spent in each map before exploring the next.

On this topic, the low and medium level maps of the game are dying. There are no players. In a game that was designed around having lots of people co-operating, this is tragic. The original GW has much more play value with being able to form your own party with heroes. In GW2, if you’re in a map with no one else around, you’re stuck with only the easiest of quests and events.

Question: Will there ever be a native OS X version?

No one has the “right” to use the Mac Beta Client Tech Support forum to ask whatever question they want to Arena Net. The forum has a purpose. That purpose is not for nagging to get gossip on what new products may or may not be in development.

It makes a difference to me to clear the forum of useless noise and concentrate on legitimate bugs and problems to be solved to improve the current Mac client.

If I were Arena Net, I certainly wouldn’t reveal what’s being worked on in our labs.

Besides that, what difference would the answer make to you?

There are currently two (supported) ways to play GW2 on a Mac: reboot into Windows or use the Mac client. How would Arena Net working on / not working on a “native” Mac client affect you? Would it change how you play GW2 today? In my opinion, either a “yes” or a “no” answer would have 0 impact on you currently play the game. It would be useless information.

Macbook (a laptop) was running OS X Server then switched to the desktop version of OS X 10.8 … installed and uninstalled X11, X-Quartz and Developer Tools … Macbook was cloned from an iMac Time Machine image and not installed properly from an install disc …

Surely I’m not the only one who is surprised anything runs on this set-up at all.

Back-up. Erase. Install OS X from scratch, properly. Restore your applications and data from your back-up.

Then try installing GW2.

Basilisk Venom - Does it stop enemy skill recharge?

The description for Basilisk Venom only gives “turn to stone” as the effect, with no details of what that means. Trial demonstrates that it prevents enemy movement and action during the “stoned” duration. Can anyone comment on whether it also stops skill recharge?

If your performance is currently above 30 FPS, why do you care? Your eyes and brain can’t perceive much difference above that.

Seriously; people spend too much time watching a silly FPS number and not enough time just enjoying the game.

Assist Ultra Metamagicals math question is wrong

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Todd.8162

One of the Assist Ultra Metamagicals heart quest questions is:

Crystal depository capacity: 4,250 units. Average crystal size: 170 units. Identify maximum quantity of crystals that will fit depository.

The game expects answer 25, which is not correct.

The question specifies that the AVERAGE crystal size is 170. This information alone is not enough to determine how many crystals would fit into the depository. For example, the sample could contain several hundred crystals smaller than 170 and a few large ones. This sample might calculate an average size of 170 but contain many crystals smaller than 170, allowing you to fit more than 25 into the depository.

Even in a statistically standard deviation, where equal portions of the sample are lesser and greater than the mean, given a large enough pile of crystals, it would be possible to find enough small ones to fit more than 25 into the depository.

I’ve had this as well, usually on the rotation keys (when I do use them). I find they a quick tap on the key that goes the direction I am moving tends to turn it off (usually).

I have had to do a reload once or twice.

This.

The problem happens running GW1 in Crossover as well. It happens when the mouse leaves the borders of the game window while holding a keyboard key.

Get the mouse pointer back into the game window, click once to ensure focus on the window then type the key related to whatever your character is doing out-of-control (running forward, turning left, …)

Audio Issues

As the title sugest, I have audio issues on my GW2 mac beta. When I load it for the first time after installation, it works fine. After I close it and load it again the next day, no audio came out.

What I tried:
- plug/unplug headphones
- close and open the client
- reboot mac
- lower the audio settings (to “Fastest”)

Anyone had the same issue? How did you fix it? Or is it still there?

TIA

Check the Sound settings in OS X System Preferences and ensure the Output selection is correct. Do this BEFORE starting the GW2 client.

Spastic camera when using right mouse button to look.

When rotating the camera using the right mouse button, it will sometimes randomly spazz out and look a random direction. I tried both full screen and windowed mode and it happens in both. I also tried turning on and off all of the Mac mouse options. It happens with any combination of options turned on or off. Something I noticed is when you hold right click the mouse cursor all of a sudden appears in the middle of the screen for a split second before it disappears, no matter where you click on the screen (not sure if that is relevant).

This exact same problem was present with the “Crossover” port which was done by Codeweavers in Guild Wars 1. I know the Guild Wars 2 client is also not a Mac native client and is also a port being done by a different company, so this could be the same issue Codeweavers had with the Guild Wars 1 port. I have a feeling it is something to do with the camera smoothing in the Guild Wars engine.

This will happen if mouse focus is clicked away from the GW2 window and you attempt to move the camera before clicking to re-establish focus. For example, if you switch to another application and then back to GW2. A single mouse click in the GW2 window when returning to the game should prevent this.

2012 Mac Book Pro Heat & Fan RPM

I recently bought myself a thirteen inch Mac Book Pro. Guild Wars 2 runs great on it, however the MBP can get very hot at the bottom. I downloaded a program called SMCFanControl, this handy program lets me control my MBP fan RPM. I currently keep the fan RPM at 4,200- 5,600. I don’t want the fan RPM to be too fast (Don’t want it to blow out on me) I also don’t want my computer internal hardware to melt. Does anybody know what my RPM should be at to sufficiently keep the MBP somewhat cooler? Any tips would be great to fix this heat problem.

Do you really think this belongs in the Guild Wars 2 Mac Beta Tech Support forum?

Think before you post.

He did say that this happened while playing this game. The game might be causing a heating problem because of the load on the CPUs . There are other threads that touch on similar issues.

Think before you post.

This is a question about hardware. It has nothing to do with Arena Net or Guild Wars. It should be asked to Apple, not here. This discussion does not benefit the development of the GW2 Mac client and it does not benefit the original poster because the answers are all guesses from people pretending to have engineering-level knowledge of electronics when truly all they have are fingers and their opinion of what is “hot” or “cold.”

Is everyone here an electronics engineer with experience with the heat specifications of Intel microprocessors? No. They’re just writing opinions of what temperature they guess the computer should run at or what the cooling fan speeds should be.

Please stop doing potential harm giving advice on subjects you’re not educated in and send this person to Apple for informed help. You could very well end up causing damage to this person’s Mac by telling them things that you don’t have education enough to tell.

Fix copy and paste already

I agree that this is odd. I am able to copy-paste my password into GW 1 which I run on my Mac using Crossover, but can’t do the same with GW 2.

Fortunately, the GW 2 client has a feature to remember the password. Assuming that you use a login password on your Mac (if it’s a work machine, you likely are) then you have a basic level of security from co-workers playing on your account.

Arena Net’s primary concern with passwords is that some people use the same login and password on several websites. Thousands of GW 2 accounts have been plundered using passwords that were hacked from other websites.

Things you'd like to see from Guild Wars 1

I agree with many of the good ideas here.

I miss the collection of skills and elite skills from the original. Finding inventive ways of using them together was a big part of the game for me. In fact, I’d say that the skill system was what made Guild Wars. GW2 only uses the Guild Wars name for brand recognition. The comparison of skill choices is sad, GW2 only allows you to use skills from a single profession class and only lets you combine them in the ways the game tells you to. It’s much less fun to be just another profession with the same skill bar as everyone else.

The boss names in the original were creative. While there are some in GW2, I was disappointed to find many named without originality.

The compass from the original game is missing, especially its view of enemies and players. I understand the concept of wanting people to “look around” to see enemies on the map but until a game can immerse all of my senses with 360 degree sight, hearing, smell and touch there needs to be “aids” to indicate where things are when all I have is a flat screen to look at and a mouse to swing my view around.

GW2 is much weaker than the original in party management. It is difficult to locate party members, especially if they are out of range of the mini-map. The “follow” feature is missing to allow your character to chase behind another. Mini-map drawing and pinging tools don’t function as well as in the original. I don’t know how people can spend an evening playing together without outside help like Skype or Teamspeak.

On the subject of costs, while everyone wants things for free, I understand and appreciate why there are mechanics like travel costs and repair costs to consume money out of the game. If the game economy only generates new money day after day without ways to remove it, the result is inflation and the currency quickly becomes near-worthless when everyone has 100 gold (or platinum) in their pocket.

Actual Log in screen and Improved Loading screens

I would think it frivolous to waste resources and time on a bloated log-in screen that is usually interacted with by the player for but a few seconds. (Both resources to develop it and resources for the player to load it.)

I very much like the current, minimalist approach.

Targeting: Neutral creatures are not enemies

The current “Target Nearest Enemy” control will target a neutral creature. This needs to be fixed. I have repeatedly been frustrated by this in the midst of combat when “target nearest enemy” makes a previously neutral creature into a combatant by attacking it. This game control mistake can turn a winning fight into a loss.

The Thief has a similar ability and, I agree, it’s near-useless. The concealment from enemies does not last long enough. It fades quickly and the enemies you were trying to hide from are always still near and finish you off.

Can "Windowed" mode cover whole screen?

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: Todd.8162

Todd.8162

I like to use the trackpad to swap between apps and that works in “windowed” mode.

But the mac menu bar remains shown on top and it pushes the GW2 window down to the point where my skill bar is half shown.

Can this please be adjusted? Usually “windowed” mode gives you the entire screen but lets you swap out or minimize when needed.

Obviously, an application running in a window can’t cover the Mac menu bar. If you want an application to use 100% of the screen and control the screen resolution, that’s one choice. If you want to have the screen shared by multiple applications in windows, that’s a second choice. You can’t have both.

I assume that your monitor has a maximum vertical resolution of 1080 pixels, which is why you run out of space when running the game in a window. (I run a 1920 × 1200 display and so can fit the game running at 1920 × 1080 into window that fits on my screen.)

Consider running the game at a smaller resolution that will fit in a window on your display. I suggest 1360 × 768 which will give you the same 16 : 9 “wide screen” ratio as 1920 × 1080 but in a smaller space.

Crash during play - lockedRect.pBits - A serious error has occurred ...

This crash and error occurred again. Upon re-starting, the game downloaded a patch named “tgUpdate version 1.11”

Hopefully, the availability of an update patch was not the cause of the game crashing. That would be a terrible way of forcing users to upgrade.

Connect your monitor using something other than HDMI? Examples: DVI, Display Port …

/sigh

There’s always one.

Actually, there are at least two: DVI and Display Port. I don’t know why people want to use HDMI when other connectivity methods have been around and proven for years.

Or maybe you were trying to be funny about something else, unrelated to the topic and not contributing to a solution?

I agree with OP. I don’t know what the Arena Net developers responsible for the “excessive messaging” block were thinking. A huge part of playing any multi-player game is repetitive, short messages. This is not “spam”, this is communication. I was recently blocked due to right-clicking a map waypoint into chat each time the “nearby event” took place. When spam filters block real communication between people, they are WORSE than the spam they are intended to stop.
