I have the same specs as Vees aswell but retina display, I have tried all of the things in the forum. Restting smc, tweaking the config files,
Don’t “tweak” the config files. There are no user-adjustable settings that need to be tampered with.
Delete the ~/Library/Application Support/Guild Wars 2/ folder to ensure none of the files within are corrupted.
Mac OS X 10.7 is the minimum system requirement.
https://en.support.guildwars2.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1119
Have you tried deleting the ~/Library/Application Support/Guild Wars 2/ folder as explained in this forum?
Have you tried the SMC reset described in the Arena Net help notes?
What is this Vram tweak you speak of? Tell me of this sorcery
It’s a fool’s errand. The “tweak” that people chase after can not and does not do anything. People falsely believe that it works because of group-think and the placebo effect.
Mac model? Specifications? OS?
The quality of help you receive here is proportional to the amount of quality information you provide about your problem.
Are you using a MacBook Pro with a Retina display? Did you follow the instructions here:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/mac/Performance-issues-MacBook-Pro-with-Retina-display
Apparently you will always have this black screen if you have 10.6.x or lower. If you are like myself, since I have 10.6.8, I can no longer play GW2 according to the email I received from ANET.
Mac OS 10.7 Lion is the minimum Mac OS requirement. This has been known since September 18, 2012.
i only have 2 guild wars files on my computer are the app and the .dmg
im also running on 10.7 could that be the issue?
Trash the .DMG file. It is no longer needed once the game is installed.
There is a “Guild Wars 2” folder located in your home directory at ~/Library/Application Support/Guild Wars 2/. Your Library folder may be hidden; read this forum on how to find it. Many people report that deleting this folder (to remove corrupted files) solves no-start problems. The Guild Wars 2 game will re-create the folder with fresh data.
Any updates? I’m having the exact same issue. OS X 10.8.2. Was working right before the patch, patch kept disconnecting while updating (which I understand with the server stress), but now it won’t get past the black screen of death. I also don’t have a Guild Wars 2 folder in my application support folder.
The “disconnecting while updating” is almost certainly a sign that your update was corrupted. Delete the ~/Library/Application Support/Guild Wars 2/ folder and try again.
i dont even have that folder and its not working
Yes you do. Everyone does. The Library folder was hidden in OS X since version 10.8. Search this forums for how to locate it. It’s been a subject at least a dozen times.
Bugs remain in February 26 update.
A report that deleting the Guild Wars 2 folder in ~/Library/Application Support/ solved the problem.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/mac/My-guild-wars-wont-work/
I experienced no issues with the February 26 update. Game running fine for me.
Can you hear the Guild Wars 2 music playing?
What does Activity Monitor (in your Utilities folder) report? How much CPU is the game consuming?
its not the application folder thing, i new about that fix but this is something different /:
Likely a networking problem. I can force a grey window (although with the Guild Wars 2 logo and Caithe’s portrait) by disabling the Ethernet port and then attempting to start the game.
Possible Solution: Ensure that your Internet connection is OK.
Run Activity Monitor (inside your Mac Utilities folder). Then run GW2. Report what you find in Activity Monitor. Does the application “Guild Wars 2” appear? How much CPU does it consume?
What is the result of deleting the Guild Wars 2 folder from ~/Library/Application Support/ ? Does this restore performance?
Everyone is aware that the “VRAM memory config tweak” is a placebo, correct? It has no impact on the game at all and people who report “dramatic” changes are being fooled by things they don’t understand.
Delete the Guild Wars 2 folder from ~/Library/Application Support/ That will get rid of any corrupted files that are causing problems.
Hi,
I’ve had some severe issues downloading and installing the game on my mac (iMac 27inch 2011). This is the second time I’ve had this issue, once during the download when my internet cut out and I had to delete and reinstall, and now once more as I finally got to play, the internet cut out again and now I’m receiving the same error. I’ve searched for any answer to it but nothing comes up. If anyone knows a solution then that would be greatly appreciated as I don’t really want to download the client for a third time.
Thanks
Error -1712 is a time out error. It sounds like you need to fix your network connect first. If it continues to “cut out” you will continue to have problems.
Logging out and reconnecting solves this problem for me.
I’m not that familiar with UNIX, so admin level access is when it asks for your admin password, root level access is … what exactly? I’ve never set a ‘root password’ afaik.
Any user can be an administrator in OS X. This allows the user to do things that only an administrator should be able to do to, like add or remove software from the Applications folder or make changes to certain controls in System Preferences.
It is good practice to NOT use your computer for day-to-day use logged in as an administrator. This way, you have an extra layer of protection between yourself and the next time you try to do something that break your Mac. It also gives you extra protection from malware which tries to install bad software. OS X will prompt you to enter an administrator login and password, alerting you to something strange going on.
I have an account on my Mac named “Administrator”. It is the only admin-level account on my computer. I use my Mac day-to-day logged in to my personal account as a “Standard” user.
The “root” user or “system” user is disabled by default in OS X. It is the King Kong user, able to do anything, delete anything or change anything. For most people, administrator-level access is the most they will ever need.
But that’s admin level authorization. OP is talking about root level authorization. If you’ve ever seen that “I am Root, Obey me” shirt, it means that level of authorization is too high for an application.
Maybe, but I doubt it. The Root user isn’t even enabled by default in OS X, so Kadath would have had to specifically issue a terminal command or use a utility to even make it active.
I’m nearly certain that OS X is asking for an administrator user and password, which is normal when attempting to make changes to the Applications folder.
I have experienced 0 crashes of the game in recent months. I’m running on a 2009 Mac Pro with a Radeon 6870 upgrade, so it’s certainly not a “you need better hardware” issue.
Is your iMac overheating?
I don’t understand why some people think they’re going to run the game in a high-resolution window plus have room on their screen for the window title bar and OS X menu bar. This is really simple math: there are only so many pixels on your screen.
If you’re playing the game in a window at a resolution which is too large for your screen, choose a smaller window resolution!
In the game, selection Options, then the Graphics tab. From the Resolution selection menu, choose a size with the same width as your screen but smaller height. For most 16:9 ratio flatscreen displays, try 1920 × 1080. (That’s the resolution of “high definition” in the TV world.)
Pretty much just what the topic says: Why do I have to give the OSX client system level (aka root) permission instead of just popping GW2 in my applications folder like any other normal application?
The Applications in OS X is owned by the System and requires administrative-level access to write to it. It’s a level of security in OS X: no software can write to the Applications folder (or other System-owned folders) without first getting permission from an Administrator level user.
Some one explain to me why resetting the System Management Controller would have any effect on a network connection problem?
Does anyone do any real research here, or do we all punch buttons on our computers like monkeys until luck shines on us and we proclaim to have found “a solution”?
It is near impossible to troubleshoot these issues without knowing your hardware.
I can guarantee that computer freezing is not caused by too-low amounts of RAM or VRAM. Chasing these as solutions will get you no where.
Use the “About This Mac” selection from the Apple menu and post your Mac model, OS version, processor, memory and graphics details when reporting a problem. Without knowing this, you’re just swinging at air hoping to get lucky in finding a solution.
thank you all for help. all answers are good. except the cmd +h does not work any more for me. i dont know why but it used to.
Command+H is a Mac OS shortcut to hide an application. It is not a Guild Wars II command. It will work on (almost) any Mac application. You can also reach it from the Mac OS menu bar. The command may not work if you’re running the game full-screen. Run the game in a window instead if you frequently need to access other applications.
Logging out then reconnecting usually fixes this issue for me.
Why are you trying to play a video game on a server OS? Perhaps this is your first problem?
Firstly, it’s Twitter. You were expecting great things to come out of it?
Secondly, you’re missing their joke. You suggested that a “native” Mac client would make thousands of users happy. Arena Net answered, “They already are”, meaning that thousands of Mac people “already are” happy with the current software.
It’s not you who stumped their “vast intelligence.” It’s they who stumped you.
Tip: Get off of Twitter. It’s bad for your language skills.
I’m surprised at how many “dungeon builds” only look at what they can do for an individual. Dungeons are about teamwork and the Thief has a remarkable number of abilities and tactics that can help others be more awesome. Stealthing allies, granting venoms to allies, healing and shielding from projectiles are all possible for the Thief.
Also remember that you’re not alone in dungeons and you don’t need to do all the slaying yourself. Thieves are excellent at debilitating opponents with conditions and impediments to make them easier for allies to deal with.
It doesn’t even make sense if you think about it… how can you stealth when you’re two feet away from me? That’s not stealth, that’s a cloak of invisibility. If the core concepts of a thief and stealth are actually examined logically, the current implementation of these mechanics are not legitimate.
Attempting to think logically about a fantasy video game made of make-believe characters, places and magic? Fascinating, captain.
As I previously suggested, Daily Achievements need to be reduced to simple rewards that can be accomplished in under an hour of play time.
New, Weekly Achievements need to be implemented that require the same or slightly higher play time as the current Daily.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/suggestions/Weekly-Achievements-1
As long as dungeons are still limited to 5, I guess it doesn’t really harm anything. Although, if they make 8 the new limit, there will be people who start asking for 9 or 10.
Agree. I understand that dungeons are designed with a 5-player team in mind.
Eight was the GW I party size and it worked well. Everyone should be able to agree on that.
What about the person that wakes up at 6am est, goes to work at 7am est, comes home around 8pm est, then goes to sleep at 9pm est? Should they suffer because you play this game non stop? It seems rather selfish to just assume everyone revolves around your OWN play-style. Please people use logic before you post against things, and think about all the other players who don’t speak their minds on the forums. I’m kinda tired of these armchair developers who haven’t ever looked at the big picture, but only their own mirror.
In this case, the person can take pride in the fact that they have a real life and are too busy to chase after make-believe prizes dangled in front of them by a video game.
I personally do 1 or 2 Daily Achievements per week – and one of those is during my weekly get-together with friends on Team Speak. I have no interest in playing Guild Wars every day, even if I had the time.
I understand the Daily Achievement system. Each player has 24 hours to complete them. For some people, the 24 hours begins when they’re asleep. For others, it starts when they’re eating lunch. Regardless, everyone has a full 24 hours. I know my local time for the Daily roll-over and I understand that is the time when a 24 hour Daily Achievement period ends and the next one begins.
So since I get spam blocked every day for notifying the zone of events, how about the inclusion of a chat entry.
There are already entries for all the regular slash chat types, and there are NPC’s, Combat, Emotes, and Game Messages.
Can we get one called Events and have it in the orange/gold color of the event circles with a nearest waypoint ping?
I think that would be a really nice QoL addition.
Nice idea. The game discourages players from communicating events to each other by spam-blocking if you do it too much. If human-to-human communication is banned, at least the game could fill in.
Why is it so hard for so many people to learn how to read a clock?
Each and every person gets 24 hours to complete the Daily Achievement. The 24 hours ends and a new 24 hours begins at the same moment for every player around the world.
Why is this so hard for people to understand?
Buy a clock. Hang it on your wall. Learn to use it.
The party size limit needs to be larger than the current 5.
My guild-mates and I play together once a week and we regularly number more than 5. While using Team Speak helps to communicate, the benefits of drawing and pinging the map are lost.
The 8-person limit from Guild Wars I would be a good lead to follow.
And, no, I will not be suckered into buying a “commander” upgrade.
I would like to be able to spend a few hours in one day on the weekend completing all of the dailies from the week instead of having to log on EVERY DAY.
Agree.
I suggest that Daily Achievements be reduced in burden to be simple rewards that can be earned in a short amount of play.
A new Weekly Achievement needs to be created that is a little larger than the current Daily Achievement.
This would make the game more realistic to how most people want to play the game.
Guild Wars doesn’t have to be a game only for unemployed people who spend all day playing in their parent’s basement. Guild Wars can be a better game than that.
Honestly, what kind of person justifies playing a video game for more than a few hours a day and defends that as being a good thing? That’s not fun. That’s an addiction.
I still stand on my point that the Daily Achievements take too long to complete. If Arena Net wants players to bother with them (and that’s why they’re there, because Arena Net wants people to be interested in playing the game every day) then they need to be changed. I want to play for one or two hours a night and have some fun. Once a week, my friends and I connect on Team Speak and play together for several hours doing team-oriented things. This is how most people play the game.
And I can only laugh at Koga’s lack-of-reality that the current Daily Achievements “do not take more than 15 min to do.” It is impossible to (for example) kill 15 enemies, revive 10 allies, craft 10 items, gather 20 resources and complete 5 events in 15 minutes. People like Koga may THINK that only 15 minutes passes in the hours they tan in front of their computer screen, but the reality is much uglier.
I’ve been an active user of Linux the last years and I think it’s sad that gaming companies and developers doesn’t seem to care about the constantly growing Linux market. There are more and more users of Linux based computers which I think game developers should start to take seriously.
You might consider looking at Crossover from Codeweavers.
http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name/?app_id=7951
I generally like the new Daily Achievements. Giving people something new to accomplish each day is a good idea and can be used to manipulate players to labouring on things that the game economy needs. (Too many resources sitting idle in bank accounts? Make crafting a daily requirement more often.)
However, the Daily Achievements still take too long to complete. I don’t have time or interest to work at my job all day then try to grind through a to-do list in a video game in a few hours before the daily roll-over time passes. I have a life and Guild Wars is only occasionally a part of it.
Daily Achievements should be small tasks that can be done in an hour of play time with small rewards for accomplishing them. Just enough to be worthwhile to play the game for some fun but not so burdensome to be less like fun and more like work.
A new category of Weekly Achievements needs to be created, roughly the size of the current Daily Achievements, which can be completed over several days of casual gaming play. This would fit in with the play style of most people.
A critical … heal?
Firstly, the Superior Rune of the Rata Sum text has a spelling error: “radition”.
Secondly, I assume the summoned radiation field is supposed to behave the same as the skill, “Radiation Field”, which causes poison, weakness and acts as a combo-field.
The combo-field of the skill, “Radiation Field”, does work.
The combo-field of the Superior Rune of the Rata Sum radiation field does not work.
I want to know what “Agony Damage” is.
Thanks. If it weren’t for players doing Arena Net’s job for them by documenting GW2 on forums and wikis, the game would be unplayable.
This has likely be asked before, but a quick search didn’t find any results for me.
Does the “poison” duration increase from a Sigil of Venom apply to Basilisk Venom? I suspect that it does not, but others may know for certain. While they’re both named with the word “venom”, Arena Net is terrible at writing their descriptions to make sense.
- Merciful Ambush (I): Create an Ambush Trap when reviving an ally. This can only occur every 20 seconds.
- Suggest: Remove and Replace with a trait that creates Shadow Refuge when reviving an ally.
This is a good idea.
At the very least, the “trap” needs to have a circular effect area, not the current rectangle. In it’s current form, an enemy will most likely trip the trap only once on top of the thief, making the “ambush” come far too late.
I laugh at people who care what their character in a video game looks like. When I play, I zoom the camera out as far as possible to see the battlefield and never give half a thought to what color the boot soles are. I never embarrass myself with scrutinizing how a weapon looks with one armor set or another. I sell all my looted dyes to the suckers who think appearance in a video game is important.
My biggest bore in GW1 was that all the armor and weapon specs were the same. Who cared what they looked like? They all did exactly the same thing!
All that matter are THE NUMBERS!
This bug must be fixed immediately.
It has been reported for months and has affected hundreds of players.
Being a cooperative and helpful player through sharing news of Events, seeking groups to join or simply saying “thank you” should NOT result in “Your message was suppressed due to excessive messaging.” COMMUNICATING HELPFUL INFORMATION IS NOT SPAM!!
I, for one, am thankful that most Map chatter is not frivolous, Twitter-like nonsense and that most people post SHORT messages of USEFUL information.
This bug must be fixed immediately.
