hey Velron, what kind of high dmg build do you have with the shield?
I am leveling up now, and love the shield! I want to keep a good amount of dmg while keeping my very fun/useful shield. I just love having a block then a knock back/knock down.

I like jlneedham’s build idea. I am leveling an engineer now and am probably going to try to get a similar build.

I have a total level 13 engineer question… for Inventions skill 11 (bomb explosions heal allies), is that bombs or bombs and grenades?

I played with the wonky camera angle yesterday and noticed if you move the camera then start moving forward with W, you will move in whatever direction the camera is facing instead of the direction your character is facing. Very disorienting, especially when picking up loot, it feels like the camera moves. You move forward based on the camera angle you were at while picking up loot.

And, when warping to a waypoint, why is it you are always facing north?

Is what the camera sees as front our front-even though we may want to look sideways and move like a platformer in jumping puzzles?

What builds and armor sets should I be looking at if I mostly do WvW?

Ironically enough, I am going Riffle/Hammer also. Please, take my advice lightly because I play lightly, I am by no means a hardcore guy decked out with amazing armor. http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Valkyrie#Triple_attribute will tell you specifically what types of armor give you what stats. Choose what works for you, but don’t load up on one stat too much.

I have a build of 0/20/20/30/0 using healing shouts. Another good build idea is 0/20/30/20/0 getting retaliation on CD. Read all the different builds in the stickyed post

As for armor, its all up to you, but what would really be useful is possibly knights/clerics gear or something similar. Basically, having toughness and a good amount of healing for when you need to heal is useful. Also of note, banners use 100% of +healing power while shouts use 80% but are more versatile (like curing a condition, healing when you need to)

as for specifics and min/max, someone else will have to go into depth.

The only problem with this build is I am using a riffle, and no 20% reduction in skills, it’s okay cause its a good idea for a build.

My current build is 0/20/20/30/0. I like the ranged AoE of a longbow. I am working on a way to incorporate it again, but feel I am resigned to trait swapping depending on the type of battle. That, or getting rid of “shouts heal” altogether. Also of note is the problem with a banner build, where that takes up 2 trait slots in Tactics, also.

I am at a loss because of so many useful traits depend on certain situations, plus the necessity of traits relating to what weapon we use. Any help or advice would be appreciated with my conundrum.

Then again if warrior rifle would do as much damage as engineer rifle, it might be overpowered.. since engineer rifle auto attack does as much damage as a melee swing from another profession.

yes, but Engineers can’t have melee weapons. They are thus compensated.

The Mad King was by far the way an epic once-a-year boss fight should be.

The horseman in WoW was entertaining, but the fight took place in a small section of a dungeon everyone already played.

The Mad King fight was like a dynamic event that got my party to think and use skill to keep up with the boss instead of a 2 minute beat fest you endlessly fought to get loot.

also, great job coming up with the candy corn, plastic spiders, and skeletons being enemies! That put a big smile on my face.

Lets boil it down:
1. There are definitely some utility skills that either don’t work properly or are not worth using. Explain some with examples.

2. Adrenaline/burst skills need to be tweaked in some way. I seem to always have full adrenaline before my burst skill is off cool down. There are a lot of burst skills that people see as soon as you hit them and because of that, are easily dodged.

3. Banners have great potential, but there is something that needs to be tweaked to get them so more of us want to use them. I tried a banner build, but ended up only using one banner at a time on short fights. Then, I swapped to not have any banners, and then needed my elite banner to revive some allies in battle.

4. traits – I feel like every time I want to use a new weapon combo I have to respec my traits, warping back to Lion’s Arch and spending moneys. It feels like traits for each weapon are on a different line. If I want to use that weapon effectively I have to put at least 20 points into that line. There are also a lot of traits that few to none of us use. Are you in that boat?

To be honest and realistic, I’m fine with most of the weapons, except the Sword with is horrible and only useful for the leap skill. Sword’s single damage condition is too easily removed in PvP, but it is not a problem with the amount of condition removal – which is fine – but instead of the sword. Hammer is probably our best weapon, even with staggering blow stopping your movement for too long.

Compare to the other heavily armoured melee class; my Guardian. With one shout (and no soldier runes or traits spent) my Guardian can remove all conditions from my allies, giving them to myself, then I just use my skill to convert all conditions on myself to boons. Also have a group stability skill. My Guardian has also much better access to group heals, especially in elite form. After playing Guardian I began to notice how poor Warriors are for group utility.

I kind of agree with the sword, the only sword skill I rely on out of the 5 plus the adrenaline skill is the leap. Everything else I don’t see much use in besides the bleed (that seems to take forever for them to bleed out). Every so often I used the throw sword on off-hand, but I never liked repartee much, I just stood there for a few seconds doing nothing. Most of the time even the PvE enemies didn’t hit me and I wasted my time.

It is sad that the guardian has so much more useful group skills available. Its like in WoW where there was this rash of paladins being tanks, choosing them over warriors because their utility skills were just better in most circumstances.

Also, you brought up a GW1 profession. I would like some of these professions to be brought back, possibly in an expansion /wink to moderator/. Another that really interested me was the Dervish.

Thanks for the heads-up about choice of race. Its nice to see that race is a factor in something.

Me and my lady were discussing making Sylvari for our next toons once we hit 80 (already happened – maybe after halloween event). I do like that extra healing/defense from tool belt skills because I like to stay alive. The bandages + healing turret + vine shield would be a strong mix of survival skills. What exactly does “trip an enemy” mean?

You just forced me to take a good look at the engineer!

Wiser, thanks for the honesty about engineers.

I do like the idea having the turrets, especially the healing turret so I can drop it and forget it (unless there is crazy dmg). Coming from a warrior, I am also worried about the choices in weapons.

As for choosing my next profession, I have played around with mesmer a bit because that was my initial character in GW1. The only issue I have with them is totally changing around the abilities from the first game and adding phantoms/clones. There were instances where guildies of mine were reviving a clone instead of the player because they looked the same (note this was very early in game).

Wow, there was a lot of in-depth responses

What others have pointed out I agree with:
1. Burst skills don’t have enough dmg for the energy they warrant. I use my hammer burst and get maybe ~200 more dmg out of the hit. The dmg shouldn’t be +400%, just enough for me to really want to use that skill.

2. Banners are not very useful except for Battle Standard to bring up a group of fallen allies. Hopefully I can run in and switch to it without the game counting me as being in battle locking my skill switching. The cool-downs are just too long for me to keep them on my bar. Also, yes, that kitten environmental weapon pick up issue.

3. There are a lot of useless traits, I think the guys at ANet should read Phaeris’ post. I agree 100%. Why are so many people on here using the same “shouts heal” build? Because it seems the most viable for survivability.

4. Make us want to use Physical Utility skills. Lower the cool-down or something. I don’t see many warriors using those skills much.

5. +1 to Lyonell for having so many people agree 100% with you

Thanks for telling about the Engineers, Wiser. I am thinking of rolling a new profession, and this is going to factor into it.

There are definitely exceptions – the one in Dredgehaunt Cliffs that involves climbing to the top of a crane and then you’re still not done (you have to jump across a gorge, not die in the process, work your way across the side of a cliff, and survive the surprise dynamic event at the end to boot) comes to mind. Most of them are fairly mild, but…

And don’t forget that there is a vista up there… yay!

I think that some healing power is always a good thing, what matters to me is not feeling that healing is a crutch for me to stand on.
I want to live without relying on my heal. I want to take some big blows and be okay without panicking because I have to heal immediately.

I agree with people here, a mix of knights and clerics armor is a smart move. Having a good mix of armor (direct dmg mitigation) and healing is what I am striving for.

For the last few days I have read about how there is a general split between those that think the warrior is viable and those that don’t.

1. What specifically make the warrior viable/not viable, and in what situations (in PvE/PvP/WvW) is the class viable/not viable? Can you give examples?
2. What do you see the best way to change the warrior is to make the class a contender? Does it need a major overhaul or just tweaks?

I agree with WhysoSully.

I hate jumping puzzles on my Norn Warrior. It feels like every time I get into a puzzle, the camera gets so tight that I go into first person view and the camera starts jumping like its trying to get out of the corner.
More than once I thought of just giving up and re-rolling because of all the tight spaces I was forced into. If I knew at the beginning of the game there were so many confined spaces/jumping puzzles I would have never rolled a character that takes up so much screen real estate.

I agree that it is a poor downed skill, also. The only reason to actually use it is if you spec into the sweet revenge talent. I have used it a number of times to rally, focusing on whomever I nearly killed (being in PvE). In PvP I don’t see much of a chance of using it unless you were fighting someone on their last legs and they didn’t already run away/heal/or finish you off.

Before I specced into sweet revenge, I never dared to touch the button and basically considered it completely useless.

How about trying either sword/warhorn or Hammer?

I am running a 0/20/30/0/20 build with hammer/riffle and am really enjoying it. The hammer is great for lock down, and the burst skill is great to gain distance or jump away. I watched a video of someone owning with that combo – mainly using rifle and switching to hammer in close quarters.

Problem is simple, make melee deal enough damage to sustain, necros enough control to for their conditions to work and rangers, well honestly just make the pet better…”

I totally agree with this post. I see a ton of warriors just switching to Rifle for WvW/PvP instead of being melee.
Also, a ranger guildie of mine is always looking for ways to keep her pet up – to the point of waiting to switch out her dead pet every time it goes off of cool down, and she always switches to longbow for WvW. Short bow just isn’t viable in that situation, she tried and failed.

o/20/30/0/20 build with hammer/riffle. The control of both weapons is so great, I can’t give them up. I ended up with a lot of armor/precision for both dmg and defense.
I have also been eyeing 0/0/20/30/20 build with reduced shout recharge/shouts heal in Discipline.
