well, I have played since the first day of open beta on 10.6.8 and never had much issue besides an underpowered machine.

Snow Leopard was really a great OS, as was 10.3. It seems as though every 3 updates they really hit their stride with features and reliability. Mavericks is pretty nice so far. They updated openGL and openCL as well as switching over to SMB2 to match Windows. I can finally see the PC on my network and it can see my Mac! These updates may help while playing GW2 and other such games.

Right now I am leveling (currently about 35) and messing with a scepter/focus~scepter/dagger doing champion farming. I am enjoying it very much. I hit them with my offhand focus and then switch to dagger when focus skills are on recharge. I also bounce into DS and throw Tainted Shackles on as soon as possible. This way I am not bound by waiting for my skills to recharge for too long. I am also supplementing my non-AOE focus with ground casted wells.

For traits I am going toward 10/10/0/10/0 so far.

All I know is that people in my guild voted for Ellen simply because they don’t care about reduced cost of black lion keys and wanted reduced waypoint travel more. Casual players look at that stuff and don’t pay much attention to backstory.

Nobody I know voted for Evon because nobody I know cares about black lion chests. Most of the stuff you get from the chests, we have gotten for free through achievement chests, etc. We have 250+ black lion chests just sitting in the guild bank as I write this with no plan for anyone to actually open them.

What is your play style?

Good control you can get with rifle or pistol/shield, you can also get that with the Flame Thrower or the tool kit.

For damage, grenades and bombs kind of win. you can get decent dmg with a condition build with pistols, or with the FT.

For grenades maybe a 30/0/20/0/20 build. bombs a 20/0/30/0/20 build. FT build would be 10/20/0/20/20 build. In any one of those builds, you can move traits around.

Keep in mind that because they fixed so much of the class (besides turrets), in regard to utility skills there are a ton of different versions of similar builds, and not one build that is the best per se. It all depends on your preferences, environment, and how you play. You don’t need rocket boots or slick shoes in a small closed-in environment, you may want another gadget or elixir.

how often do you use your tool kit, and would it be worth spending 10 more points in tools trait line to have the cool-down? Why did you not take deadly mixture/juggernaut when running with FT/EG?

As a note, I am running with FT and sometimes EG and have 0 points in inventions. My traits are 10/20/0/20/20. I am using healing kit, proxy mine, FT, PBR or rocket boots or EG, and supply crate mainly focused on power and some condition dmg. I switch out skills depending on what environment I am in.

Also, having so many kits may hinder you. Don’t try to make a ‘kitchen sink’ build where you have everything, but aren’t focused. What elixirs or gadgets could you use to give you more options in a fight? Also, if you like the inventions line, have you tried bombs and grenades? Healing bombs is grandmaster in that line, and people really like that trait. Also, proxy mine works with the bombs/grenades have larger explosion radius skill and I bet also works with other such skills.

new player build and gear question

in Engineer

Posted by: Varqov.6984

Varqov.6984

Grenades are good in WvW from a long distance. I personally tried it, and didn’t like it much because of the aiming, more specifically aiming at people who were jumping all over the place and within 400 feet of me.

Try it and turn on your free camera, you can go back to standard camera by hitting both mouse buttons.

I ended up with a FT/Gadget build because I am so used to using the FT. I switch out what gadgets I use and sometimes use the EG if I want to have more support. The issue is distance, where farther than ~600 feet away you need more options. I just switch out and use my pistol at large distances, or maybe a good idea would be tool kits pull #5 to keep enemies close. Tool kit has become a very useful kit with the confusion, vulnerability, shield, and pull.

The only way to play without kits is to play with elixirs/gadgets. Choose either of the 3 weapon set-ups and realize you aren’t gonna be maxing out. maybe go with rifle and get the trait that says rifle/harpoon gun deal 15% more dmg.

Oh, there are also turrets but they are a bit broken except the healing one.

this is my skeleton I am thinking of playing with. Right now it’s a 10/20/0/0/20 build.
I am thinking of going 0/20/0/20/30 for packaged stimulants or leg mods.

That crazy tools trait line is just so tempting to me after patch. Feel free to change around utility skills to your liking. Sometimes I run with the elixir gun if I need to cleanse conditions, need more healing, and spread conditions more. Also maybe switch one gadget out for the PBR. Oh, as for sigils I am going with adding power because it’s great for the FT #2 as well as gadget damage.

What utility skills are you interested in using?

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fcAQJAqel0paZ37y4F17IxoHce0hOkC7bYQKyLgB

this is a quick idea using the now useful gadgets. If you want to use kits, by all means. They are the bread and butter of our versatility. You could use tool kit and keep pressure with the confusion, gear shield, and the #5 pull. The pull will be useful keeping close to enemies.

For the build, having a 15 second ~5k heal isn’t bad at all, including the extra bandages, antidote, and stimulant on the med kit. Everything else is all about damage and keeping people near you.

Feel free to switch up things, but this is a good skeleton if you want to play this way.

find a guild that is comfortably sized for you. Make sure they focus on what interests you now.

The personal story is pretty interesting and you get a weapon skin when you finish the dungeon.

As Drix stated, WvW is more than zergs. I generally just go in and do whatever. Sometimes I go in with my small guild (5-8 of us in a mini zerg or broken up in groups of 1-4 doing whatever we please), other times I run with a major zerg, other times I just roam around and finish the map and look for small groups to help out.

Don’t get stuck thinking you have to do one thing in WvW or PvE, there are a lot of options. Base what you do on how you feel when logging in. Heck, you can even have multiple guilds – maybe one for PvE and one for WvW.

Afterward comes my offensive doing 2-4 on p/p before they stealth again. Run away for a second or two and land a glue shot behind you. Theres a good chance you might see a revealed thief by then and proceed to pummel with supply crate and what not.

Another possibility instead of glue shot if you are running with rifle or shield is run with slick shoes to blind them. Also, if running with FT wait a few seconds then use your #5 blind.

Build choices

in Engineer

Posted by: Varqov.6984

Varqov.6984

Well, what are you using right now?

what build you use depends on your play-style. You could use a TankCAT build with a rifle. The jump shot and net skills on rifle will be very useful when using the melee kit. I think it would work very well with gadgets now that they made them viable with lowering cool downs and the rocket boots buff (for mobility). You are going to be traveling down that trait line anyways.

The FT/EG build has become more interesting because you only need to put 20 in firearms instead of 30 to get the best skills for the build. After the patch I switched back to this build with traits put in 10/20/0/20/20. I am running with med kit, EG, FT, rocket boots, and the supply crate. I switch rocket boots to something better for the situation when it’s not needed (I used them once in that lava fractal and jumped right into the lava when fighting the Shaman). Sometimes in PVE roaming I switch out the EG to something else (a gadget maybe battering ram or remote mines) and just have fun. Switch out to whatever you think will benefit you in the situation you are going in to.

for stats, its all about what skills you have on your bar and what weapons you are wielding. For secondary stats (besides power/condition dmg) it’s a mix of toughness/vitality for survivability and precision and crit dmg for killing effectively. I am going more toward survivability with toughness/vitality but still have +precision gear/ring ~30% now while building stats.

There is so much more versatility and options with an engineer. Choose a few kits and use those for a while, then respec and use different kits.

I leveled with Grenades/elixirs at first, then FT/EG and now am using grenades and tool kit with remote mines. I get bored, I switch kits/utility skills. If this new patch is right I may have to switch to rocket shoes and try them again. So many options to play with.

How do you like to play the game (PvE/WvW/PvP, or do you mix)? What skills are you using now?

For kits with power there are 3 good options: grenades, bombs, and tool kit. Flame Thrower would work, but it won’t be ideal going for power.

For rifle you are right, go with power instead of condition dmg. Always work on having a decent amount of toughness/vitality. To not be squishy you should up your toughness/vitality to a comfortable level. For extra toughness go down the inventions line; for extra vitality go down the alchemy line. Logically the best trait lines would be explosives and firearms if you are sticking with rifle and grenades/bombs. If you take bombs and want healing bombs go down inventions (where you get that extra toughness).

For elixirs, they can be very good. I like to use elixir H and S. I have played with B, and C and R can be great in the right situation. Mix them up and use them based on what type of fight you are getting into.

ocgreg, you are getting there little by little I see. It took me until about 55-60 to really lock down what I wanted to focus on. If you are liking the grenades, pick up the trait in explosives line that increases damage by 15%.

As for kits, if you are using grenades, pair them with bombs to possibly go healing bombs later on. Maybe a 30/0/30/0/0 build where you can put the remaining trait points in a line you choose later on. With grenades you want power and both condition dmg/duration. If you find yourself fighting in melee range sometimes, try using the tool kit. Also, the Elixir gun has some very useful skills, but trait-wise meshes with the Flame Thrower (that I thought you wrote you don’t like).

Need a solid leveling build

in Engineer

Posted by: Varqov.6984

Varqov.6984

FT is enjoyable to me. Pairing the FT with the Elixir Gun is the most logical because the same traits help both. EG is also very useful for the ground targeted heal and the acid bomb that flings you back pretty far. Also, the poison (#3) i think removes conditions on allies. The two trait lines that you want to look at are going to be firearms and alchemy.

Another fun build is the TANKCAT build or however you say it. A lot of engies really like using the tool kit. I like it for close combat because of the shield, the 1200 range pull, and the confusion whack. The trait line that helps that out is tools. Take note that in the Tools trait line, Speedy kits is great for perma-swiftness, as well as static discharge (not sure if it is bugged, though). That might give you the chance to use a shield offhand, something that I miss with my EG/FT build. To reduce cool-down of shield skills and increase toughness while a shield is equiped, you need to go down the inventions line.

As for skills, get whatever you think is the most useful to you. I personally picked up everything besides the turrets (excluding the healing turret, that is good). Look at the gadgets, also. Some people think they are useless because of the long cool-downs, while others still find certain ones useful. See if you can’t start out with getting some kits, since you seem interested in the FT. They are very useful, like turrets, but are mobile.

before being blasted by people, I am basically a weekend player and not as up to date as some other players. I do research stuff when I am looking for an upgrade or wondering about my traits, and read the forums sometimes.

I am using a pretty standard 0/30/0/30/10 build picking up EG range and cooldown in firearms and damage in alchemy. Also in alchemy I got automated response, but you can get HGH if you like the extra might when using the flamethrower. My gadgets trait is speedy kits instead kit refinement (due to the nerf a few patches ago). Speedy kits gives you basically perma-swiftness when running around the map.

Pretty soon the other iteration of the build 10/30/0/30/0 won’t necessarily be as used as much because of the upcoming patch and change to incendiary powder (4 second burn every 10 seconds).

The Tools trait line

in Engineer

Posted by: Varqov.6984

Varqov.6984

I am playing with the build editor and am confused about the tools trait line.

I see traits that a lot of people use – speedy kits, kit refinement, and static discharge – everything else I don’t really see as being useful. That said, most people I gather put at least 10 points in the trait line to get 1 of the 3 traits I said above. That leads to sacrificing builds of 20/20/30. instead we get 10/20/10/30 builds; sacrificing the ability to trait into the master tier.

I say this because I don’t hear of too many people using more than one gadget per build, some using none at all. I personally don’t use most of the gadgets because of the miss factor and the very long CD of the skills.

Am I totally off on my observation?

Kit Refinement did not get unreliable. It is a STANDARD 10 SECONDS ACROSS THE BOARD.

That’s what the patch notes said but it’s not what they actually coded. Grenade Kit and Elixir Gun have their own separate 20s cooldowns on top of the 10s cooldown on any Kit Refinement effect.

So, in reality, is it 20s (for EG and GK)+ 10s(for KR) = 30 seconds to get another free skill from the trait?

Kit Refinement did not get unreliable. It is a STANDARD 10 SECONDS ACROSS THE BOARD.

What I think the devs wanted was for engineers to actually use the kits instead of swapping to the kit solely to get the free skill via the kit refinement trait. We only have to stay in the kit for 10 seconds. Or, if you hate the kit you put on your bar that much, swap back to your firearm!

Some engineers are basically saying that the kits are rubbish except the kit refinement skill. That to me is what is rubbish.

Need guidance for a casual PvE engi

in Engineer

Posted by: Varqov.6984

Varqov.6984

Having kit refinement mixed with elixir gun gives the engineer an extra heal every 10 seconds. The engineer generally likes precision/power then toughness/vitality.

If going with grenades/bombs and riffle than more power over precision. If using dual pistols or pistol/shield with other kits then precision over power.

dual pistols you want a mix of condition damage and duration. Work on damage first because you need a lot of duration to get even 1s higher on P1 bleeds.

I have not wasted any points in turrets, I never use them because I jump around too much.

I have been leveling with pistol shield and the EG in PvE and can take a good amount of mobs before I get overwhelmed. working with 20 in firearms and 20 in inventions for the 20% less CD for both weapons. Also, 10 points in gadgets for the kit refinement is a pretty standard beginning.

What it comes down to is preference. Have both of them fill out all of their weapon skills and use all of the skills that look interesting to them. This also applies to the skills they will be getting with skill points.

I started with using a lot of elixirs, and now don’t have any. I don’t like the RNG or the fact that I have to aim them for others to get the effects. I am too busy running around to waste time on it.

This patch was a good one for EG and FT… but it was a bad one for any build using more than 1 kit.
And in that regard it hurts engineer versatility.

As for the title of this topic: of course we’re not dead…

There are 2 traits in 2 different trait lines that help both the FT and the EG. If you want to use both kits to their full capability then you have to put 20 points in 2 different trait lines, effectively using 40 of your trait points in one foul swoop.

This cuts down on versatility of builds. If you also want HGH, then all your trait points are already spent without getting kit refinement. It is a lot more damaging than waiting 10 seconds for a CD.

Also, with the new buffs to these kits, I hope you use them for more than their kit refinement swap abilities.

Golemancer is nice if you are mainly running with pistols most of the time, but more times than not we switch to kits (of which you have 2 you will be using regularly).

also, what about also having either boon or condition duration bumps? For conditions I have it in my head a good 70/30 mix between condition damage and duration. Because you don’t want conditions to fall off in 2 seconds and also not have the opponent laugh it off because it feels like a wet noodle hit.

I like having 1-2 kits and am messing around with everything to see what works for me on my engie I am leveling now. I started with grenades, got sucked into the elixir gun, and I am trying everything else out for my third utility slot. I also enjoy the elixirs, especially B for the awesome boons.

I agree that they can’t play whack-a-mole with builds and skills. Also, I kind of agree with the guests saying that the warrior is in a good place and the rest of the classes have to balance to that. I main a warrior at 80, and totally agree. The only issue is the lack of builds, but that can be said of all classes.

The main thing that I cringed at was the fact that they ran with 5 engies. Was that sarcasm, an inside joke, or something else? Hopefully from what was said, they are looking at bringing the engies up to the warriors level and balancing everyone based on the low-medium-high skill levels like they explained.

The main issue I have with the class is the lack of dmg, unless you take a specific build. They sounded like they want to get away from that model and open the gates of possibility instead of having the same old skills everyone specs into. Hopefully this will come about in the next 1-2 months.

I agree with a lot of you here that turrets are a weak way to use a utility slot, especially when you have multiple turrets drop all at once. My question is: if turrets are a weak way to use a utility slot, what is a strong way to use a utility slot?

Right now I am leveling PvE with elixirs and elixir gun as a kit for the extra heal and the acid bomb when mobs get too close.

I agree with playing whatever you want.

But, personally I will never use them because I jump around all the time and never stay stationary. In most instances, staying in one place too long is not a good idea to me. Shield skills make it possible, but fights don’t last long, then I am off to the next objective.

Unless you want to hold a point indefinitely, I don’t see the use.

I agree with szar, want to wait until Tuesday to see what happens.

either way, if they have all the bullet points of changes that he said, there are going to be some smiles on a lot of faces.

Again: Weaponstats and Kits..

Ok, I even numbered the points for you. I stand corrected on my first point however they are still not a core part of warrior gameplay and as such still aren’t really comparable.

so, if a warrior wants to use banners and spends trait points to do so, they aren’t a core part of his/her gameplay? Anyone can carry a banner and use it as a weapon (giving a full bar of options just like engineer kits) or plant it on the ground for AoE boons.

The major difference is that banners are mainly planted and left there for the boons, and then picked up after battle to move to the next battle. I see warriors running across the field sometimes with a banner in hand on his way to the next skirmish. Also, they don’t last indefinitely.

I agree with SF… warriors can have a lot of utility, but I feel that there are basically maybe 2-3 viable utility builds for the warrior, while I see much more opportunity in the engineer to do the same thing.

Currently I am running around with an 80 warrior with the standard “shouts heal” build, and think its rather boring but don’t see any way of surviving all the conditions thrown at me with a different build.

well said coglin, I love the thought of having too much to choose from in a profession.

3rd Downed Ability

I know someone who just spams the buttons and gets up most of the time doing so. I try to time my skills and use #4 to try to get up myself, and manage to die more often.

I don’t really know how much downed abilities really help.

I want to take the conversation back to the OP. I played a warrior to 80, realised that running around and hitting things gets old after a while. What gets me interested in playing is utility and being able to help others.

Anet has tried to have utility in the warrior, but the engineer seems to play much more of a clutch role in utility. That is why I chose to play an engineer next.
