I like the challenge of running an inferior weapon set. It’s not advisable for most people, but S/D and D/P are too easy and too cheesy, in my personal opinion.
You can’t say, “THIS amulet is better always” because there’s always different variables with each build that can’t be accounted for through hypothetical reasoning blanketing everything in PvP. I was merely defending my right to use a soldier’s amulet, which it appeared you were saying “wasn’t viable” anymore. You’re entitled to that opinion, and I’m not trying to force Soldier’s down your throat, I’m simply stating that, for my purposes, I use it. End of discussion.
Please stop pulling numbers out of your kitten as well. The Berserker’s Amulet gives a whopping 15% crit damage, where 30 points in CS gives double that. I don’t think that’s only a 10% damage increase between taking 30 in CS or not. The jewel gives 5% crit damage. This means that taking 30 in CS alone over taking a berserker’s amulet/jewel alone is 10% more effective.
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/PvP_Berserker%27s_Amulet
If you’re able to achieve 42% crit chance, which is the point where you begin seeing diminishing returns from your crits, you should alter your stat allocation a bit to accommodate for more survivability. You’re useless to your team if you’re free points for the enemy team.
You’re also wrong in saying that Soldier’s has the limited capabilities compared to crit damage specs in PvP. Crit damage has a hard cap of 60% (with runes) in PvP, and that’s a lot there. That means that the damage coefficient difference between the two modes is nerfed by almost 50%. The difference between PVT exotics in PvE and PvP, however, is much, much less. If I can have 23k health and 2.5k armor in PvP with 43% crit chance and 30% crit damage, as well as 3k power I’ve done my job as a build crafter in creating a successful build that not only does damage and quite a lot of it as far as PvP goes, but also is survivable and won’t rely on team mates to keep me alive. This is what makes a successful roaming build. You don’t necessarily have to do a metric ton of damage, you just have to be able to take down the bunker before his backup arrives.

I’ve never encountered hackers .-.
Are you or have you ever been in the employment of Anet?
Sorry, it just seemed like the auto response Anet would give – Aka bury head in the sand and if I don’t see them then they don’t exist.
No, but I do plan on applying as a character artist when my degree is finished next semester ;-;
Well on GoM things have been way worse. In fact, thanks to the leagues things have become incredibly better. Even if we had our ups and downs since then, it’s not been as worse as before the leagues began.
And since it ended, things got even better. Which surprised me, so I’m happy.
Wat
I’ve never encountered hackers .-.
Let me shine some light to you. 15 s of poison is as op as 25s is as op as 25min. It doesnt do more damage because it has huge uptime. Either its 15s or 25 min u will want to remove it.. All it takes to get rid of it is single condi cleanse, no matter its 15s or 25 min.
I fully agree. However, it does reduce healing potential and not everyone is going to carry enough Condi removal to remove that 30 seconds of pitiful healing, so I get where ANet is coming from on that. Anything to reduce the effectiveness of conditions is okay in my book. Alone and individually they’re not good at all. It’s when you go and start adding them together that things get out of hand.
What’s wrong with you Trav? All of my builds are completely theorycrafted on the spot, many taking hours to carefully construct. I know we’ve had out conflicts, but accusing me of stealing other people’s builds and calling me stupid because I “never” would have thought of it is uncalled for and rude.
Shortbow isn’t meant for killing people in this build. It’s not meant for solo roaming if you’re planning on getting kills. I pointed that out. You should have read my post. This build is for surviving everything that comes in your way and supporting your havoc team if you run with one. Most every build I craft is a team build, and I know what I’m doing as I’ve been giving you guys builds for nearly a year now.
You’re also completely and utterly wrong in every one of your points. You’re arguing the fundamental flaws with the class and weapon. I’m sorry, but you can’t die easily with this build at all. Maybe if you tried it out instead of speculating theoretical situations (and not even well at that) we’d all see just how great you are. Go ahead and post another vid, Trav.
The reason poison is being nerfed is because it was stacking 5 seconds per pulse, which would add up to 25 seconds per spammable field, easily generating over a minute of poison with enough pressure. That is OP. Nobody’s arguing with the duration nerf.
Also, please link me these “2 other guys who did similar”, because it really feels like you’re taking a personal stab at me.

We had no say whatsoever in our design, in our creation…so why no one accepts us?
Not sure where you’re from. But most people get to choose their own race/profession and their looks in this game… Maybe try and talk to your provider why you aren’t allowed to.
I think he went with the 2-year contract. He’s gotta pay extra to switch providers.
Arg, it’s pointless trying to lecture me on the mechanics and diminishing returns of stats. We both know that the Berserker Amulet in PvP doesn’t provide nearly as much damage opportunity as the gear can in PvE, and thusly most damage stats come from trait lines, ala Critical Strikes. I’ve run both on my S/P team build and the damage increase is minimal while the survivability is drastically reduced. In most situations, however, I will agree that Berserker is the optimal choice. In my particular case – which is what I was arguing for – the extra defensive stats are necessary due to the lack of stealth my build has to lean on when things get heated.
I think you’re trying to argue more along the lines of WvW/PvE, to be honest. Any buildcrafter who’s been at it since launch knows that the diminishing returns in PvP are extremely limited due to the nature of the limited amount of stats per amulet, mitigating the effectiveness of going full out due to the limits of each build and the statistics that coincide. Bunkers are a bit of a different story due to how crit damage scales in PvP and their lack thereof, so keep in mind that this is about crit damage sets and setups themselves.
Aside from that, stop comparing the thief to the warrior. We’re not warriors, period. They’re the most powerful class in the game currently, and we’re one of the weakest. That comparison just doesn’t cut it when you’re trying to talk balance of any sort.
Back on topic, the only time I would ever run a full berserker setup is when running a backstab build, where with a sword build you’re focusing on sustained damage rather than direct burst and shouldn’t be concerned about hitting hard when your damage isn’t front loaded, and you need to stay alive to burn an enemy or enemies down using that cleave.
Back when thief was better, you could run Soldier’s ammie (sPvP) easily.
Nowadays, they’re simply not strong enough to use anything short of Zerker. Any less DPS and you simply become an extremely underpowered warrior.
Personally, I’m okay with that. As a player I’ve become more aggressive over the past few months anyways, and I prefer to play my thief dynamically rather than statically. I reserve static play for my mesmer and guardian.
…unless you’re running a sword build that already has 30 in CS. At that point the risks outweigh the benefits, and you’re no longer gaining much damage and sacrificing all survivability. It’s still completely viable to run a soldier’s amulet as a thief in sPvP. Nothing has changed with the way we fundamentally function.
Any and all feedback is always welcome, guys.
Burnfall, it’s not because you’re a ranger. Trust me.
Hey all, it’s been a while since I’ve brought out any builds, so this time I thought I would do something a little different. Okay, you got me, a LOT different.
Hate dying? Like laughing at your enemies who can’t heal, can’t crit, and can’t catch you? Well, good! Without further ado, I present Shortbus, the invincible thief build:
The Breakdown
- Your condition duration is key. To maximize your non-damaging utility conditions (crippled, immobilized, vulnerability, weakness, we can lump poison in here too), you have a whopping 100% of the stuff.
- I wanted to continue with the whole “being different” thing this build, so I’ve thrown in some traps here, along with Corrosive Traps to boost your personal damage on top of your might stacking, since your base damage is lacking.
- Your offhand set is anything you’d like, but shortbow is your primary survival utility.
The Pros
- You will not die with this build. Ever. Your kiting capabilities are far superior to any other class, and you’re able to troll zergs for days. For fun, carry plenty of supply and stealth traps along with putting 300 points into supply capacity for further trapping hilarity!
- You’re always going to be focused being a thief, which is great for your team who can DPS down the targets while they try to kill you.
- You can actually zerg and tag stuff? Farm them ranks!
The Cons
- You hit like a wet noodle.

- Don’t plan on killing anyone while solo roaming, you’re going to be engaged for upwards of a full minute if you’re set on getting a kill without a friend for burst. If you’re looking for scouting and not dying, this is the build for you. If you just like killing people in 2 shots, this is not your build.
- A full set of exotic Sentinel gear costs almost as much as a full set of ascended. Soldier’s works as well, but is slightly less of a damage sponge in exchange for hitting slightly harder (not much, though).
I hope someone finds some fun in this build. I know I’ve had my share of it.
Also, Shortbus was supposed to be Shortbow, but I’m posting this on my phone and autocorrect happened. Happy mistake? I think so!
(edited by Viking Jorun.5413)
u should take fury on phantasms instead the sneak at 20%, its not reliable coz it can proc when u use gs auto atk and unsneak u right away
Now you know how every thief feels, except imagine being forced to take it as a 5 point trait to one of the two trees you take if you want any sort of survivability.
The proposed changes to critical damage gear aren’t specifically PvE-focused, but focused rather on the stat weighting of critical damage itself. We’re not aiming to make crit damage unviable, just to bring it closer to other gear sets.
As for the first feature build, there will be other factors coming into play that could very well offset the changes, including reworked runes/sigils, the ability to use sigils in new combinations (including 2 on a two-handed weapon), and the profession balance changes. Just something to keep in mind.
Its good Necro’s have runes and sigils.
I’m afraid to even respond to this, but what could you possibly mean?
He means to say that necros will also be benefiting from the new redesign of runes and sigils, and the benefit isn’t exclusive to power builds which Josh was saying would balance out with condition builds because of the new rework, although he did say that there were “other changes” coming in the Feature Patch, so I wouldn’t make too many judgements yet.
Potato potato. They still go through the same training, and you can’t make that comparison.
We’re the thieves. Deal with it. Please stop posting ignorant opinions.
A security guard is a police officer. His job description is different. You still go through the same process and have a badge as a security guard, just a different employer.
Thief are good, but people wants necro warrior guardian
Nobody wants a necro in serious PvP. Their lack of stability, condition removal, almost 0 sustain, and ghastly lack of mobility pretty much make them a liability since they can’t hold their own on point for very long as a bunker, can’t burst like a thief/ele, and can’t stack conditions like they can in PvE/WvW due to their lack of condition duration, making Dhuumfire necros the only mediocre PvP build that is viable outside of MM AI spam in team fights.
Most good teams have:
- A warrior
- A guardian
- Another guardian
- A thief/burst ele
- Condispam; Engie does it better. So does Spirit Ranger which also has team support (their new spirit heal essentially gives healing signet to the entire team)
(edited by Viking Jorun.5413)
Nah just kidding. Love you all! Been having some pretty good 1v1’s against some skilled rangers.
~a thief
Stop being bad? I mostly pug TeamQ’s and I’m micromanaging every fight. My w/l ratio isn’t half bad either, especially since most people lost 66% of the time they TeamQ pug. :P
Since the suit is already a pretty lackluster elite, would it be possible for the duration of the golem to last 240 seconds as to be able to keep it up for role playing purposes? Just a thought, I don’t think this would disrupt any sort of balance.
I play soley thief since game release and done fractals since their release and not once have I been kicked from a fractal group for being thief. I don’t understand the obsession with berserker gear. No matter how good you think you are you will die in berserker gear. Stop using it in fractals.
Up until recently I’ve ran fractal 49 with pugs daily without ever being kicked on my thief. I’ve been kicked one time when on my warrior because everyone kept dying (keep in mind there were 3 necros and one mesmer… Yeah.) while I survived, and they blamed me for their incompetence. Not to mention how many times I banner rez’d them without thanks. Running S/P and swapping utilities for high blinds/group stealth and running SoM is a lot more useful than most classes. You shouldn’t be kicked simply for being a thief.
Reduce condition damage scaling by 10%, problem solved?
theres a way to run flashing blade actualy without running it on evade
The principe of the elite is to make foe unable to strike you due to the light reflecting on your blades right in their eye. You practicaly blinding them with a shine of light to prevent them from striking back. How the elite could work is that for 15 second every of your auto attack cause blindness to mobs in a 300 ft radius. That way we keep the cool principe behind the flashing blade without making it a constant dodge. How it would be designed would look like…
Flashing blade
type: trick
Cooldown: 210 second
Effect: for 15 second all of your attack apply blindness to every ennemy target in range
range: 360 ftIn theory this works the same way necro blind spam in plague form is done and allow you to strike a target with impunity for a set amount of time and this for as long as you can keep hiting it.
That would definitely be an elite I could get behind, but it might feel pretty OP. Blind is a very strong condition, and thieves have pretty rapid attacks. Even 8 seconds of being able to blind someone on every attack would feel pretty powerful. Plus, I don’t think that’d work with dual pistol thieves who don’t use any sort of blade..
Am I the only one who doesn’t get kicked from things due to the fact that I’m a thief? L2P much?
“-_-
just delete us
why? i’m tired to read posts about nerfsand give us free lv 80 warrior in full ascended armor with legendary ty
Then sell legendary, buy full ascended for teefz and pwn face.
All is Vain.
Ninja, that wasn’t what I was saying at all. I, personally, am able to survive much better stealthless than most people can with stealth. I’m not making any claims for what is more survivable overall.
Yep. I love the challenge of having no stealth and the absolute need to time my dodges before a big burst or face the consequences of defeat. And yeah :x, I feel that SB 3 might also be a bit spammy. It’s hilarious though, to be immobilized for 6 seconds with both R4I and Withdraw on CD and have 10+ people on you, only to SWAP TO SB and spam 3 until something’s off CD or the immobilize wears off, and is fantastic for surviving that kind of situation.
I stay alive without stealth better than most thieves do with it, Burnfall. I also have 4 stun breaks (shadowstep is 2, fyi). I don’t think you play thief. Please stop.
Actually Jorun’s first post could be summed up by kittenl2p noob" as his opening line is dripping with derision. Impact’s reply however was factual and non-aggressive and i learned more from impacts’ posts than any of joruns’ because jorun got emotionally involved and overlooked some of the details in his skill list. I’m not an Impact fan nor a jorun hater but those are the facts.
Anyway, OT: I have little experience in wvw (which is what this thread is obviously about) but even so i’m not phased* at all if a warrior can cover more distance than me as long as it’s running away from me. The warrior can run as fast and as long as they want because thief has superior mobility, which is more important in combat.
Yep, I did get emotionally involved, which led to some poor arguments and blind desperation. The conflict is over, however, and I’d ask that you not try to start it again by pointing out fallacies.

What: Initiative regeneration under chill
Why: We know that Chill causes 66% movement and cooldown speed reduction, which is pretty powerful. However, Thieves don’t have cool downs on their weapons because of Initiative, so doesn’t this give their weapon skills immunity to that part of the condition?
Suggestion: They should get some sort of penalty instead, like a reduction on Initiative gain.
Thread: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/balance/PvX-Chill-vs-InitiativeOriginally by: Hitman.5829
What: Shadow Embrace
Why: The thief can remove 2 conditions each time he goes in stealth, if and only if at least 10 points are spend in shadow arts. This means that a thief can remove 2 conditions every 3-4 seconds since they are constantly in stealth. Thieves have access to: (A.) Infiltrator strike on the sword #2 skill, which allows the thief to remove any condition any time he wants. (B.) Hide in shadows (the healing skill) that removes burning poison and bleeding (and 2 more condition because they have shadow embrace treated.) (C.) Shadow step which removes 3 condition and 3 more condition removed when shadow return is activated. (D.) Shadow refuge which can remove up to 6 condition (because they can last in stealth for 15 seconds which means that one condition is removed upon entering stealth + 5 conditions removed in the 15 seconds of stealth). By just spending 10 points in survival, the thief can have access to an incredible survival build. Keep in mind the following: (A.) Shadow step will also break stunts TWICE. (B.) Infiltrator strike will return to original place confusing the attacker, if you are immobilized, just use infiltrators return so your attacker cannot get to you. (C.) Shadow refuge 15 seconds of WTF where Is the thief. (the condition removal skills recharging, him gaining initiative/health). Now the thief can use the remaining 60 points to make a powerful damage build.
Suggestion: If the thief wants to have a survival build, then change the shadow embrace trait to grand master. That will force them to spend 30 points in survival.

Initiative regen under chilled has already been discussed by Jon Sharp, who says that -66% initiative regeneration would be way too big a hit on thieves, and he likes that we’re somewhat of a hard counter to chill-based builds altogether.
The pistolwhip (short Story in 11 chapters)
1.it will be good
2.many thieves will try this Set in pvp
3.warrior: “kitten cant Do anything. Dat teef stuns me den evades evrythin, nerf dat anet!!!”
4.anet: "warrior has Problems, we need to “shave” pw"
5. Ini cost goes up by 1
6. Warrior: “teef still stuns me n evade All my hamr attacks, nerf more”
7.anet: “hm…better we reduce stun time back to 1/2sec But leave upped ini costs untouched”
8. Thief: "but…you wanted to buff pistolwhip? "
9. Warrior: “So many stuns, so many evades, clearly op”
10.anet: " ok we nerfed pw twice after buffing it, so its Not pw what makes thief op. We better nerf other skills from this Set. Blackpowder 2sec casttime to add counterplay. Sword AA dmg reduced by 15%"
11.thief: “i didnt want this buff, i knew what would happen…”
End+1 Love this post. Been playing PW thief for a few months now. When I started playing it back in September I thought I found a “secret” kick #ss build for thief that no one knew about. Now it’s out in the open and we will be seeing more and more PW thieves, especially if it’s buffed. Guess it’s time to find the next “secret” OP build lol.
I’ve been running PW for nearly a year (was the first set I used when I started my thief and switched from warrior) and I honestly can say that I don’t think you’ve found some “secret” build that works magically. I’d love to see it and have you prove me wrong, but I’ve been running a no-stealth 10/0/0/30/30 for ages (10/30/0/0/30 in PvP because CS is what makes an effective thief in that mode) with loads of success, especially with the PW buff December 10th.
I’m glad my theory is catching on! (Been saying this on Reddit/forums since Southsun, although at that point I though it would have been Kasmeer and Faren)
there is no thief build that can stand up and attack that priest of grenth.
There is nothing in the entire of the PvE scene that evasion + SoM cannot beat.
I have also solo’d this before, it’s not even remotely difficult. When you’re the only one around you can just pull him towards the back of the temple (near the skill point) and then to the side (breaking LoS), and the Shades won’t even pay attention to you in that corner.
If I find an empty server that hasn’t bugged and can get to that stage then I’ll record it, but really, just try it. SoM will easily outheal any incidental damage from Ice Elementals and the Priest himself doesn’t use anything dangerous up close until the big circles which take a few seconds to land.
Thanks man. This is what I’ve been trying to say. SoM Death Blossom Caltrops in apothecary can solo any PvE content in this game with relative ease. Even Lupicus is a joke (although this takes ~15 minutes of the same monotonous rotations) when running it.
What did you expect? You’re running enough Cleric’s gear to start your own religion, and you have very modest damage as a result. You have a lot of Armor and green numbers, but were doing squat for DPS once your party members went down.
Ironically, your Thief might have had better luck here, since the mobs of enemies at Grenth make things like active evasion, blinds, and Signet of Malice a hell of a lot more useful than Aegis. Although this was a nice fight for Symbol of Faith, at least.
Im just sticking up for anyone that thinks thief isnt OP, I know conditions arnt the best, but a Dire condition thief with SoM, Caltrops and Dagger storm can live FOR EVER.
A good s/p SoM thief can too.
A mediocre D/D apothecary/settler’s thief can do that by spamming 3 and caltrops.
Yes, Matt. Most thieves think that if you aren’t doing 20k backstab combos, you’re doin it wrong. And god forbid you use sword for anything but spamming pistol whip in a “zerker or nothing” build.
Why is that bad? Taking more then half your life in 1 combo? Then watching you run away?
Maybe if you watched the video you would understand.
Wow, I guess the sarcasm was too strong :x I thought people would get it with the “as only over 1000 HPS without much investment into healing power”, but I guess that one flew over too. Sarcasm was intended, people!

I don t call these thiefs skilled , I just call it cheap.
Thread: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/balance/PvX-Nerf-Shadow-s-RejuvenationWill agree that Shadow’s Rejuvenation needs to be nerfed. A lot. Assassin’s Reward shouldn’t be punishing people for actively staying in combat out of stealth while Shadow’s Rejuvenation rewards people for staying in stealth, healing them completely in a short amount of time.
I mean … do you even play a thief ? 320 hp/s while sitting in stealth… daaaaaamn that’s a lot!
I don’t think the base needs to be nerfed. It’s in a Healing Power tree though, and the trait itself scales too well with Healing. I’ve been known to run an “invincible” condition thief using Apothecary gear to troll zergs for days, and you’re able to get well over 1000 HPS in stealth with even a minor investment in healing power.

Impact, just stop. You’re almost trolling with how right you need to be, and it’s bordering on a personal attack. Please. Stop. I missed the part where you were arguing over land speed without a target, which having one is what my entire argument was based on, hence having all passive mobs and critters mapped out in WvW to maximize my land speed, and when I’m pathing out my shadowsteps I’m much faster. That was all I was trying to say, not make a big deal out of it and look like some piece of kitten elitist who needs to be right about everything. Get over yourself, because everything is situational.
ANET doesn’t care. You all will keep playing your thieves each patch. Until there is a dip in thief logins the nerfs will keep coming to appease the rest of the population.
Probably. No point in saying thieves are on par with warriors when built right, because nerfs will just ensue our land speed and distance.
Impact, shut the hell up. I’m tired of your kitten. If you browse that discussion you’ll find that I was also a part of it, as well as the “Warrior = Usain Bolt?” Discussion currently ongoing in the WvW subforum. I’ll be happy to post as many videos as it takes when my hard drive replacement arrives so that I can rub your nose in this argument. Keep it up. People don’t whine about thieves having a fast land speed because most thieves don’t give up stealth to do it. You all pick on Interceptor for the same argument, yet we both know what we’re talking about. Thief may not have a faster land speed when there are no target, I’ll admit that as well. As I’ve said before, I have both EB and the Borderlands maps mapped out by distance between mobs and critters to maximize my land speed. In using my knowledge of what to target and when, I’m able to easily outrun a warrior. THIS is my point. I won’t sit here and argue it with you any longer. Know what class can outrun a warrior as well? A FGS ele with superspeed on attunement to air, resulting in a 2400 range whirlwind on their FGS when every 10 seconds for a full minute, as well as their burning speed (which puts them into combat, mind you. Not recommended).
Anyway, just stop. You’re now arguing for the sake of arguing.
There are different sets of rules for hotjoin, solo que and organized team arenas with voice com. In the first two, in which 99% players are (including OP and myself), you should go as glassy as possible. Explanation is simple – matches are more or less chaotic, and you have element of surprise. Surprise + burst = victory.
Who talks about serious gameplay in regards to SoloQ or HotJoin? The whole point of anything any serious player says is in relation to TeamPvP.
Pot kettle again. A warrior’s skills and utilities may not be off cooldown. This shaves 2400 off of their mobility. See what I did there?
The point is, from personal experience, I’ve never been outrun by a warrior, and catching them has never been an issue on my build. Telling me I’m not half decent for blowing my utilities to escape is moot, because of the fact that I’m escaping with those. You seem to have this notion that warriors have the fastest land speed and that’s final. Believe what you want, I won’t stop you from living this enclosed life and not accepting that things aren’t always black and white. All you’re doing is spelling out technicalities that we all know are pretty kitten obvious.
Here’s my build:

opening fight——thief does 1 dmg to you cuz it was a failstab and u 100b air. I closed the video after that.
Instead of getting mad over it, why don’t you watch the video? The thief in the first fight even replied to this thread.
sorry, no mug+cloakdagger+backstab as opener. not watching.
Hah. How laughable. Shows how most people who play this class really are bads.
[…]Hitting big numbers is about as helpful as standing in Lion’s Arch. Your team doesn’t need you dying.
Common combo in a teamfight of precast pistol whip + steal/infiltrator signet is an instant 5-8k damage against a non-bunker. It is also a cleave, and PW can be cast a few times in a row. If you jump to a target who triggered a shadow trap (10 might + fury) and you are lucky with crits, you can hit even +9k PW… 2 times in a row.
You don’t die, you make people die, and they die in a fraction of second. Go full power/crit build or go home. Anything else other classes can do better than a thief. It is a fair trade.
Don’t mistake me: I still hit those 5-8k pistol whips, and maintain cleave. You don’t need to hit the highest numbers, because there comes a point when that’s better spent on survivability. I was once in Team Legacy playing tPvP up there with Team Paradigm, I think I know PvP. You’re essentially free points every time you walk out of spawn if you go pure glass.
opening fight——thief does 1 dmg to you cuz it was a failstab and u 100b air. I closed the video after that.
Instead of getting mad over it, why don’t you watch the video? The thief in the first fight even replied to this thread.
