I highly doubt that the CEO and Director would stand there for 90 minutes without having anything substantial to say. Just imagine for a minute if they came into this with nothing major to announce, how nasty do you think the response would be and do you really think they would expose themselves to that willingly?
Also as far as hype they have posted several screenshot that have nothing to do with the current story line and certainly nothing that will happen in the conclusion tomorrow. There isn’t a doubt that Rytlock has changed and whatever this represents, a new profession or ascension it is something likely too big to roll out in an LS. Besides quoting something like “The Living World was just the beginning” means something else is coming so what else can it be other than an expansion? I truly believe the " New framework" they are referencing is going to refer to expansion tied in with LS and feature patches going forward.
(edited by Vlad Morbius.1759)
Here is something to keep in mind, every other time something out of the ordinary and almost wishful has been put out there on other sites, such as Reddit, it’s usually squashed, these rumours haven’t been at all so that tells me where there’s smoke there’s fire.
Too many coincidences, I’ll put my money on an announcement at Pax with the crux of the framework being LS coupled with expansions to tie all that in which is very revolutionary as far as the industry goes. Also expect an announcement that in between these expansions the LS will continue to move things forward, this alone will separate them from all others in the MMO industry.
We’ll see come January 24th, I still think a company in Korea with interests and their finger on the pulse of local business has more than just random speculation to go on, at least more than we do being so far removed from that economy.
The old personal story was, defeat Zhaitan. If the new race’s personal story isn’t about that then they don’t need to rework the old one. The new races’s story could be tied into a new personal story arc if they release a new continent or possibly told though the Living Story.
Guild Wars 1. Every time they brought in new professions they brought in a new set of story lines. Could be the same here.
This exactly. Of course a new race c/w their own personal story can be brought in, in fact that would be much easier to create from scratch rather than reworking a story that affects all the current races. It likely takes a heck of a lot less effort to do this than anything else to be honest especially a total rework of existing stories and lore. So I do expect a new race along with a new class in a full expansion and in fact if I’m not mistaken a lot of work was already done on Tengu before they scrapped it and went with their current choices so it’s not only possible but likely.
Two things wrong with the above.
Oct 31 st is Halloween.
Oct 31st 2015 is on a Saturday.
The point isn’t that this is the exact date it’s that it’s the bloody 3rd quarter lol!
Here’s why I also believe that an expansion is coming; http://www.kdbdw.com/bbs/download/192028.pdf?attachmentId=192028
If you review this data they not only call for the expansion but say it will come in the 3rd quarter of 2015 which is key piece of information in all of this, why? Well if you go back to the trailer video and stop it at the frame where Marjory is looking at the worm stuck in jade there are inscriptions on the crates in new krytan which translates to “Oct31 live content” which to me fits exactly into the predictions with the stock company.
Now I know a lot of people argue this company has called for an expansion as far back as 2013 but I think that was more along the lines of them saying that they would be building an expansion. Also don’t kid yourself, if this company is making these claims and are way out of whack their reputation takes a massive hit and they wouldn’t risk that.
Don’t for a minute think that NCSoft stock success doesn’t take precedence over Anets want of secrecy because that’s not realistic, and this article is all about boosting stock value.
(edited by Vlad Morbius.1759)
They will livestream it. Or is your physical presence required?
I’d love to be there myself but due to work I cannot, thanks for info on the streaming I can hopefully tune into that.
“…we’re setting up a new framework for how an MMO can grow its universe.”
ArenaNet: perpetually planning to prepare to iterate big things that may or may not make it into the game.
This, two plus years of this, is anyone really surprised that so many people are jaded, apathetic or flat out cynical? I wish I could attend Pax just to see how this will all go down.
If this was any other MMO I would say that all the signs in the video would lead to a full blown expansion in the Crystal Desert/Elona and Ascension. However this is GW2 so I reserve the right to be as negative as the policy has made me over the last year and say I have very serious doubts.
Happy New Year all! 2014 is one I’m happy to lose, lost my stepfather, which ,means two in one lifetime. Not sure I’m any different than most since I’m sure many have loved and lost but I thought it was time i set all aside as far as the forums go and wish all a Happy New Year to you and yours!
Well here is my prediction for what will be announced;
There will be major additions of content added throughout the year which will be linked directly to the LS. These will include new lands, as well as new classes, starting areas, dungeons etc. all of which will be accessed to a limited degree through the LS but the full versions can be permanently added through a gem store purchase. These releases will continue throughout the year as the story progresses and the items will vary as they will pertain to said story. At the end of the day the promise will be the expansion level content most are looking for but will not be available all at once.
Positive notes: most players will finally get the volumes of content they have been asking for since the release of the 2nd season of LS. Anet is then said to be keeping to it’s guns kitten far as LS and non traditional MMO. People will only need to buy what interests them and jump in only when they choose, which offers more choice to those who don’t want a full expansion. The LS portion of the content itself will still be available at no cost for everyone.
Negative notes: content will still only be available in chunks and not as a complete expansion. The content available may not be what you happen to be looking for during that particular release which means you could be saddled with more of the same until they do release what interests you. The overall cost of getting this volume of content will be far more than any traditional expansion pack.
Concerns: two years in there is a tremendous amount of gold in the game and this will lead to many people being able to buy gems through conversion which limits the overall cash influx into GW2. This is also going to mean they need to make up for that which translates into the greater costs for the overall content. The other potential issue will be the fracturing of the player base but the overall freedom of playing what you want when you want to will rightly or wrongly be their justification on how this is still the fairest way to release the content.
You aren’t people. You are a person. You are irrelevant to what “people” like.
Yes, I’m a person who had no issues with the dailies and saw no reason to waste resources on a third iteration of the same bloody thing excluding me from getting what i was without pushing me into things i dislike.
That’s cool. There’s actually nothing stopping you from playing the way you want, but if you want to claim that there is…
I can no longer do the dailies the way they were designed to do due to a change nobody asked for, so yes again.
If players start dropping off all because they have to go a little bit out of their way to get AP (which, if you didn’t notice, you will have to do, period, if you want the major AP rewards) then the game has more problems than dailies. Clearly, they should completely ignore “fixing” dailies and work on other portions of the game.
The game has way bigger problems than dailies that worked just fine a month ago which is another reason i despise all of this, it wasn’t needed.
And if you’re already planning to leave… well, then they don’t really need to please you, do they? Clearly you’ll be difficult to actually please if the only thing keeping you here is the dailies. They should focus on the people who either are happy with the changes or don’t mind the changes, as they’ll clearly be easier to please and retain.
It isn’t, or wasn’t the only thing but it’s fast becoming another page in the book of changes nobody has asked for all the while they continue to ignore what everyone is asking for (trait fix, expansion). If they continue to ignore a majority of the player base the way they have been it will result in a loss for all players. Don’t kid yourself, when a game starts faltering and money starts disappearing it becomes less likely that it will be sustainable. So in the end they can choose to try and compromise and make everyone happy or blindly go about making changes ignoring feedback but in the end it’ll be bad for all you included.
My leaving is a culmination of a great many things and i won’t be the only one. They have continuously pushed their agenda with no concern or regard to their player base and this will not end well, so go ahead and push back but when its all said and done we’ll both have been forced out of a game we loved for all the wrong reasons.
People like fractals. People like vistas. People like gathering. People like not having to leave WvW in order to get 10 AP. Clearly, they are offering what people like.
Whether you like it or not is irrelevant to the whole. They don’t need to offer what you like.
I don’t like fractals and you certainly don’t speak for me. I don’t like this change at all and neither you nor the one behind it will convince me otherwise. Like I’ve said if they don’t want me to play the game the way i want to no problem i can just stop playing, actually I’m in the process of downloading DAI and upgrading WoW, so I’ll have plenty of options while they pull their heads out of the sand. When it hits the fan and the players start dropping off I just hope the right people take the hit for these poor decisions.
This whole change smacks of desperation by Anet and let’s call it what it really is, a subversive feeble attempt to push players into content they don’t normally play in the hopes they can keep them here while they scramble to bring what many have been asking them for, more new content / an expansion! You think the threat of punishing those who won’t fall in line is the right path to take, wrong you are so bloody wrong.
You’re trying to force players hands, through some petty blackmail attempt well you may not like the fallout for doing so. I got it, you don’t want me playing the way i want to play, message received, ill just stop playing!
So, let’s ask the real question: If grind sells over there, and not over here, then which way will ANet go?
We’ve already seen our version of the game get hosed over for the China version, so it doesn’t look good for us.
Well considering they have a new Lineage coming out my bet is they’ll hedge their bet on that for China and push Anet to win back NA/EU. Of course that’s a logical course of action and I’m not certain that’s been the path this last year. You know honestly the most amazing thing in all of this, GW2 had the most successful launch in gaming history and this will be the legacy they’re going to be left with if they don’t a miracle out of that studio in the next few months. Who would have thought we’d be here in August 2012, it would be laughable if it wasn’t so sad.
Well the only positive side to this is that maybe with China not doing well they’ll concentrate on getting us a lot more meaningful content and before 2016! I’ll bet they start talking to us again pretty soon in the new year. It’ll be interesting to see how they try to win many back after treating us like pariahs for almost a year.
Consolidation to a megaserver is likely due to the fact that implementation of content there and here will be much simpler to do with the systems being the same. It also leads one to speculate if it is being done to accommodate something for both sides of the pond at the same time, like say and expansion.
GW2 needs an expansion and it needs one badly. Nobody can deny the success or dollars a traditional expansion can bring, just ask Blizzard how well the latest one did for their subscription rate and box sales. Also don’t forget that this game is the only real successful western MMO title NCsoft has left and I doubt they’ll continue to let it flounder.
Anet knows how powerful a boost expansions can be to the bottom line so if they aren’t headed that way my only prediction is some heads will roll.
I truly don’t believe that people are complaining about the devs themselves, more so the fact that all their concerns and input has been stifled by managements policy. Anets own decision to shut off all meaningful contact with it’s player base is directly responsible for the vast majority of complaints. Nobody knows what is heard or taken into account so these complaints just keep circling around. You can’t blame players for being upset, it’s like yelling into the bloody abyss around here and management is sitting back giggling their butts off at all of us.
They stated that they wanted more content specific objectives and rewards and wanted to drive players to content the would have not otherwise tried. They wanted move away general objectives and rewards from all modes and make the rewards relevant to the content being played.
Which from PvP you could see that happening. Out of the 3 matches I played you can tell that alot of people went there not having PvPed before. One match everyone on the team but me went to home point to cap it for daily and you can tell they brought PvE builds. Why? because it was much easier and quicker then the fractal or silverwaste daily. We ended up winning that match and the guardians and necros completed their daily in one match.
Now does it mean those people are going to stay and PvP? Maybe/Maybe not, but it did get players to atleast enter and play PvP to one match and some might find they enjoyed it. But it did intise some people to enter pvp that would have never have entered it under the old system.
That is the entire point of this change. The only people that are going to be disadvantage or upset with this change are people that are to stubborn or afraid to try new things and WILLINGLY exclude themselves from objectives rewards. It really doesn’t get any easier than capping a point and earning 50 rank points for a pvp loss or capping a single sentry and spending badges in WvW.
Anet encouraging a wide spectrum of play is going to benefit the community more than catering to players with a very narrow and specific play preference. I am glad Anet is atleast starting to put more focus on promoting the other playstyles but still has a long way to go.
I don’t care what they’re trying to encourage, I do PvE only and that’s what I enjoy, so no I don’t want to try WvW or PvP because it doesn’t interest me and that’s never going to change. They’re doing this as a way to maximize the end use of the currently developed product as it’s a cheaper alternative than adding more, not for some altruistic expand your gaming experience mantra and to claim otherwise is laughable.
Why rework something for a third time, when there are dozens of far more crucial things that need attention, I’m looking at you trait system. I can’t even say for sure if they’re better or worse I’m just sick that they spent more time fumbling through a third go around on something as trivial as dailies when the real issues go untouched. Someone needs a priority check over there, k thanks.
I definitely believe, at least with regards to daily changes, most people aren’t unhappy about it. And I also believe we’d not be hearing these types of complaints if Anet had announced an expansion. People are complaining because they’re disenfranchised generally, even if what they’re complaining about at the time is relatively minor. And these changes…they benefit pretty much everyone who doesn’t care about dailies and many people who do care about dailies.
Haven’t tried them long enough to form an opinion on this but what makes me unhappy is the fact that this was reworked again for a third time. If the last 2 years of content is anything to go by the development time is a very sparse resource and shouldn’t be used to rework trivial things so many times over while many important items that really require development attention go untouched, I’m looking at you trait system.
I mean who the hell over there is driving these changes because if you ask me they don’t seem to resemble anything the majority of the player base keeps asking for, I defy anyone to point out a thread saying we needed to fix these one more time.
Why are things like these being fumbled about to the point they need to be rehashed so many times, who keeps dropping the ball? The point I’m making is a really don’t care if they are better or not, I would list a dozen more critical things that should be done long prior to this trifecta of dailies and wonder why management isn’t seeing this either. Priorities people please!
Finally something that doesn’t glow baby blue!
This games is built around the living story model and was announced before the game was released. Everyone knew this before they bought the game. If you really have an issue with it, why did you buy the game in the first place?
That is simply not true at all, in fact living story as a premise didn’t come to be until October prior to the launch of the Halloween event. The game was not marketed as never going to have expansions or solely with the living story concept, in fact I don’t think they specified any direction at all prior to release. This is the earliest information I’ve found on LS; https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/colin-johanson-outlines-guild-wars-2-live-game-development/
(edited by Vlad Morbius.1759)
I will reserve judgement until this is rolled out to see how it actually works. It’s been my experience lately that nothing is added unless there is some kind of underlying reason that will benefit Anet. Sounds cynical, it is but hey i didn’t start playing GW2 being that way it’s happened over time for a lot of reasons, most of which are things that were supposed to make the game experience better for me but were the polar opposite.
(edited by Vlad Morbius.1759)
I don’t think this was unexpected and I don’t think that’s the real reason for the rage I personally think it has more to do with disappointment. There has been far too much disappointment lately stemming from many things;
- No real information or forecast due to their policy
- NPE
- Too many unanswered storylines
- No new dungeons comment
- RNG/TP
- Long & more frequent breaks between content
- Rehashed holiday content
- SAB
- Balance issues
- PvP match-up issues
- WvWvW concerns
- Megasever/roleplaying
- Condition damage
- Zerker Meta
- Traits
Those are just the ones that immediately come to mind. It all boils down to feeling completely shunned by Anet on many levels and very unappreciated though many have supported this project from beta stages. I know that the predominant feeling I’ve had is that the customer base is nothing but an unwelcomed pain who’s every attempt at getting real answers is met with the door being slammed shut and there doesn’t seem to be anyone over there willing to open it again.
At this point we have nothing to look forward too except the next LS and for a lot of us this is no longer nearly enough. Nothing to be hyped about down the road but more of the same. We’ve been given no plan, no direction we are just outsiders trying to get a glimpse of what the future holds and being told that it’s none of our business.
You know, I could make an argument against this and so on but now I don’t care. I’m finally annoyed at how infrequent content updates have become and how they rely on filler releases (WvW tournaments, holidays, etc) to bridge the gaps.
Having to wait until next year for the next episode is ridiculous.
Welcome to how I’ve been feeling for months now, not very pleasant is it. It seems one disappointment after another and nobody here to explain why, that to me is the worst part.
People keep saying that there is only one episode left, where is that confirmed? People have speculated on it for quite some time, but is there any actual confirmation that Episode 8 will be the last of season 2?
People speculate because that’s all they can do. Once again I’ll point out that the flames are being fanned by Anet’s policy not the players who have nothing to go on but speculation.
We now have a new holiday Wintersmonth! Frankly maybe it’s my age showing but I just can’t throw snowballs for that long anymore.
You’re completely ignoring all of the content that we got during season one although quite a lot of it was temporary. So which games regularly release updates like the living story as well as doing expansions?
Almost every MMO in existence today does this, WoW does it, SWoTR does it, heck it goes as far back as Asheron’s Call and Everquest. I’m not sure what your experience with MMO’s is but I’ve been playing them since the onset of their very existence and I can tell you from that experience that this format has been used extensively. It may be monthly or quarterly but the amount will be roughly the same, it is the reason those games continue to exist and many flourish still today.
I don’t think monetization is a terrible thing but I am very reluctant to spend anything when we have been kept in the dark for so long on what the future holds as I’m certain many people are.
The fact of the matter is if they continued to add these items but were committed to building expansions as well as the gem additions through living story I don’t see an issue. People would at the very least understand what their support is going towards but at this point I’ve no idea so why the heck would I continue to drop money if I’m not happy with the direction?
Anet hurts their own cause by being so tightlipped and at the end of the day we have no idea why they’re following this path but hey they may be happy keeping it status quo, can’t imagine why but the current path sure seems to indicate that to me.
If they had the staff to do both, don’t you think the Living Story episodes would be larger?
People go once they’ve gone through the content and there’s nothing left that interests them. Many players rush through it so that they’re the first ones done. I remember someone beat Factions the very first day.If you don’t like the way they’re doing it with the living story then this may not be the game for you. I say this because I doubt they’re going to change and start doing an expansion.
Two plus years is not rushing through content, granted there are game locusts that’s a fact of life but I don’t see how you can justify there not being a need to expand the world at a much faster pace. As far as staff that argument has been dealt with many times in many threads over the last few months, Anet themselves have confirmed that the LS staff represents a very small margin of it’s total development staff.
So it is entirely possible to develop both LS and expansions and it isn’t out of the realm of feasibility that they have been working towards one over the last few years at whatever rate they could.
I highly doubt Anet realistically believes that they can keep the game growing with the marginal amount of content being released through the LS. It comes no where near the type or volume many different players are expecting this far post launch.
You can’t do both.
Of course they can considering the size of the LS team. It’s been done in several MMO’s in the past. It makes perfect sense to do both, it would give them the right combination of content and story plus earn decent money from players who are always engaged and want to stay in Tyria.
Not everyone dislikes the living story and believes it to be a failure. Of course people are going to want more and it’s split into two week segments compared to an expansion. However, you’re going to still have the same gap without new content whether it be with the LS or an expansion. The only difference being the duration of the gap.
This is exactly why i said the LS could maintain interest and be a way to bring cash into the game between expansions. I truly believe at some point this was the strategy and may still be, we have no way of knowing since they shut us out of their plans (which is totally bizarre considering we were the ones that made the game successful in the first place). I suspect that their plan may have changed at least time wise due to the China development and they are now having to stretch out LS longer than planned. As I’ve said if the change in strategy is now something they are considering long term i truly believe it will fail miserably at least in my circle.
Wouldn’t it be great if they would just lay things out so all this speculation could finally be put to rest. I think the real danger long term is that they’ll lose a good chunk of people out of shear frustration of being left to rot in the dark. Either way the whole NPE had to have some strategy behind it because two years on I doubt they would expect word of mouth that to spur new players into the game so an expansion makes sense there.
Anyway as i said the LS has a place in the game but is nowhere near enough to replace traditional expansions and I highly doubt I’m in the minority on that point.
So you’re assuming that creating 10-15 new maps will not take much time? You’re expecting new races, classes, traits, utilities, etc to not take much time either? I’m not saying it’ll take the entire length that it took to create GW2 but to expect all of this within a year or two timeframe doesn’t make much sense.
You’re speaking as though this was their first foray into the MMO world. Anet knows exactly how long their content should last and what’s needed to keep it profitable and growing. They know they can’t continue to just push through LS, it won’t work long term, heck it’s already showing signs of petering out. Many players I know personally gave up on that whole format after season one, heck my entire original guild bailed and none of them will return unless and expansion is coming.
The living story should be nothing but filler used to keep interest going and as a way to continue to draw income in between the expansions. If the decision was made at some point that LS could play both those roles, it was a bad decision because I guarantee it won’t be enough to sustain a healthy population.
New Class in Season 3 “The Gardener”
Weapons; scythe main hand / weed puller offhand
Range Weapon; Poison Spay Gun
Ascended Weapon; Edward Scissor-hands (who also turns out to be the mysterious mister E)
Traits; Weeding, grooming, trimming, arranging, pruning
and so on….
You’re setting yourself up for some major disappointment.
Actually in my mind it’s Anet that is setting themselves up for major disappointment. I do not feel that the LW, feature patches and holiday content will be enough to keep the game healthy over the next year. If they don’t add expansions along with the type of content that they have given over the last two years this I predict this game will plunge into obscurity for many players.
I know a lot of players who have only hung on through this year’s story to see if it was designed to lead for something larger and if that doesn’t happen they’ll disappear altogether rather than logging in every few weeks for the LW, I’m one of them.
I cannot see how this could all possibly tie up in one episode so perhaps it’s a sign of something larger down the road. As usual don’t hold your breath or bet your mortgage on it.
How’s this for a theory…the water bug while running through SW they fixed yesterday wasn’t a bug but it was turned on too early and the SW will be transformed into a jungle area by Mord that will tie all of this together?
Woooo boy…. can you imagine how much more interesting the game would be if all foes could hit as fast and as hard as raptors from GW1?
Considering the speed of the mordrem wolves it would not surprise me in the least.
Dont forgot that this was said in the blogpost; “Season 2?s final episode will feature an unforgettable end for all of you who go on this journey with us. So make sure to jump in and join the ride starting on November 4.”!
Especially this part "For Tyrians, the awakening of each of the previous elder dragons led to catastrophic world events: earthquakes, tidal waves, and the raising of a long sunken continent are just some examples of the destruction left in their wake. These have seared their marks into the face of Tyria. "
Those are some mighty big claims so let’s hope it pans out into the ops theory.

Please don’t disappoint.
There’s a bigger technical issue—during “in game” scenes, the NPCs are moving around and things are happening (gadgets might be activating, props may be animating, etc.) and if you just skipped all that, it could lead to some really bizarre behavior. Trying to manually set a “failsafe” to teleport the NPCs, fire off effects, etc. to replicate what the world state is if the cutscene plays is extremely tedious and error prone.
That’s why the old style “dialogue cutscenes” are skippable, because we aren’t doing anything to the world while the dialogue plays, so skipping it doesn’t have any effect. We’ve moved away from those, because the in-game scenes are a lot more satisfying, but there’s a trade off.
Update, perhaps I am wrong on this, if so my bad.
Well maybe my mind is a little foggy on this and I might need to go back and check but haven’t there been cut scenes like this in previous episodes of LW much the same as today and we could skip through them? It seems to me this has only been an issue recently like the last 2 or possibly 3 episodes? If I’m wrong I’m wrong, I’ll chalk it up to age!
(edited by Vlad Morbius.1759)
Honestly, at some people will just not bother doing content x/y/z at all anymore because of stupid mechanisms making it a drag… which would really defeat the purpose of trying to make it last longer.
I secretly still hope that this isn’t the reason why there is no skip button for cutscenes.
Well I can’t really draw any other conclusions since we’ve historically had the option to skip these scenes. The functionality could be added at a later date but for now and based on the size of the content additions I’m pretty much thinking this is done purposely.
As I mentioned in another post, they won’t add the option because its meant to drag out the time it takes to complete the content otherwise known as forced repetition for the sake of faux longevity. I can almost guarantee that this topic was discussed and the change was made a few patches back for exactly this reason, or in short working as intended.
Btw. are we still calling it Point of no Return , is that the official discription of this season?
Yes, it’s on the bottom left corner of the pic.
Well, one can only hope but man that will be a hard fall if it doesn’t pan out that way. Personally I’ve found way too many chunks of coal in my stocking to believe in Santa Colin anymore myself.

It’s just a little sad to see the dream die. That’s all.
I agree completely, it’s been a really hard coming to that realization especially after following this since it was but an idea talked about online.
