Engineer:

Strengths: Condition applications and CCs as well as okay sustain through blocks if using shield or Tool Kit. Pretty good at Single and AoE dmg.

Weakness: Countering stealth players unless using Nade/Bomb build since since Engi has no real melee to just swing around randomly except tool kit but that just isn’t viable when fighting a stealth player due to lackluster dps/range in TK. Poor Condition removal and not very group supportive.

Kryponite: Hammer Warrior and Stealthy Thief. I have Still never managed beat a Condition Thief or Condition Mesmer.

Bug/Fixes Elixir Gun Tool Tips for Elixirs would be awesome if they were affected by Elixir Traits. This would allow for more Condition removal for the Engineer (since the Automated Response nerf hurt our condition defense with nothing to make up for it yet). Fumigate could be traited to cleanse the Player as well and both Elixier F and Super Elixir could then be used as additional group cleansing support! This would be super awesome! Hobosack options would be valuable to end-game aesthetics. Static Discharge still really needs work on being more accurate…I have yet to find this to be at all reliable and worth using since it can’t ever seem to even hit the largest of Norn.

I’m honestly just looking for a tier that has a WvW presence, no queues, no big perma zergs, small havoc crews but plenty of solo roamers, occasionally dead time zones and plenty of flexibility in the server rankings to compete against many different servers. I want a break from the constant zerging. There really isn’t too much solo roaming in T1 lately since there are SO Many randoms everywhere and most people roam with 3-5 other people. Most of the time they seem to always be Nike Warrior, Thief, Mesmer combos. I just want a break from the over populated servers with meta class play style and get some variation going. If I find a fun server I may possibly just transfer my main account at this point. I didn’t really want to be in T1 in the first place and with the mega server system TC’s funny pve ambiance is sort of disappearing (which is too bad).

Basically I’m just looking for a fun lighthearted server with lots of wiggle room in rankings.

Thank you for the recommendations! I actually first started on AR when the game first came out but transferred after a couple months to learn more about WvW. I have my alt account exploring DR and FA so far. I always had an affinity to “Fort Engineer” [NERF] in FA after running into a team of all Engis that were super fun to fight against. (I mostly play Engi myself). Both of these worlds seem to be in a sort of mid range area and seem to have plenty of competition both above and below them in rank. I kind of think FA is a little higher in rank than I would prefer for an Alt account though…but an Engineer Guild is just so tempting haha

I actually have to modify what my build is…It is a combo of Celestial and Rabid gear (exotic). Just a bunch of stuff I through together while crafting since Dire was too expensive. So if I was running the build properly I would have a lot more vitality and a bit more condition dmg. than I initially thought. Still survive really well though.

Yes, P/D condition Thief is the pinnacle of the low-risk/high reward associated with condition play-style and part of the reason it has received so much criticism. And it still remains a major balance problem.

Thankfully D/P is probably one of the few counters to the build. Constant Blind spam is the only effective tool for denying P/D Thieves a Cloak and Daggger and thus denying all the benefits that come with it (Regeneration, Condition removal, Sneak Attack etc.).

At least it has been a while since I lost to a P/D Thief.

Yeah I totally agree with you. I only died to a P/D thief and really struggled against the meditation GS S/f Guardian. Both of them were spamming me with blinds! That is a really great point that can be utilized!

Thank you!

And no, just editing the post does not cut it. Be nice if you want to be treated nice.

Alright I’ll give you that one. I came off a lot more negative than I had meant to (was trying to get a chunkle) but it was bad humor. I recognized that and altered it. So I apologize for that. But just responding “reported” on the thread is not helpful to the situation though.

Thank you for your feedback though it may not have been topic related it was a good reminder.

snip

Double Snip

I believe Wiseman has something worth talking about. Right now in WvW, the the fact you can burst via stealth auto bleeds + tormenting that is making Stealth more of a nuisance than before for me also. While thieves do have lots of survival aspects to them, they were still mostly squishy targets, so In most cases when you did die to a thief using stealth, they were indeed probably better than you because if they got hit on directly more than 5 times, they were usually close to dead. They were playing a somewhat dangerous game (one they could escape, yes, but still dangerous).

But right now, that problem is slowly no longer a factor. The reasoning for their high mobility and stealth has always been because they are squishy. It makes very much sense. but lately the new builds are using stuff like Apoth and Dire, relatively tanky sets in a toughness line. When you throw these together you get something short of single targeted burst similar to necromancer and sustain similar but with mobility. In some cases, it barely feels like a big deal such as sPvP where there isn’t much to be used to actually get the sustain outside other players, so counterplay is possible via dodging, evades or well placed CCs. but in WvW, there are other factors to account for. Also, mobility can only get you so far in sPvP because you have to be within a certain area.

In all honesty, It makes you wonder what really is the culprit in all of it. Sure, stealth abuse causes this to be insane, but maybe the condi application or tankiness of the set is the real problem? Maybe its just the fact that WvW in itself causes mechanics which are normal in other formats to go to levels of absurdity. Necromancer Life force is a good example. In sPvP, most people are starved to death of life force. But in WvW, they practically Bathe in it to the point that if their group is taking objectives well/consistently, they almost become something similar to ADCs in League of legends.

Anyway, sorry if this is rather long post.

Agreed, its the combination of survival, mobility and stealth coupled with the Conditions. Its easy to build up to 2000condi dmg 60% bleeding duration. Obviously this can be done in PVT gear too which I think many WvW thieves use but they have to come out of stealth to hit you (and jump back in). Its this combined with conditions that use the stealth, Acro line and Dire gear that make the thief surprisingly tanky and somewhat untouchable And can disengage and run away when warranted. That makes this build super powerful for WvW to the point of being very very difficult to fight against.

- Using full dire I couldn´t beat eles with diamond skin. With thieves guild, mug, cnd and sneak attack I brought them under 90% but they just switched to water and healed.
- Most p/d thieves rely on cnd for stealth. It has a 1/2 s cast time and a quite obvious animation which makes it easy to dodge. Even with steal precasted cnds can be dodged.

I could out cleanse Necros since stealth clears conditions so just CnD until they don’t have much left.

- This is not always going to work. I know that cnd gives 4 s stealth. If the thief was low on health he is most likely to wait the full time to either attack or cnd again. Just count and dodge. Or if you are playing a x/d thief cnd on them.
- Reflects are also a good counter especially if the thief just spams sneak attack without thinking what the enemy does.
- Classes I have trouble against are mostly eles and engies. Most eles I fought lately could easily outheal and outcleanse my attacks. While their attacks weren´t hitting so hard the fight becomes very tedious and it is more likely that one makes mistakes.
Condi engies with grenades and bombs are probably the enemy I have most problems with. They are applying too many conditions for me to just cleanse via shadows embrace and using cnd on them is difficult thanks to their many aoe attacks.
Also a well played d/p thief. It should also be possible to build a warrior that is practically immortal against a p/d thief but I´m not sure if he could kill you so it doesn´t really count.

You can easily sit in an enemy group and pick them off especially having the #2 skill so not even Nike Warriors can get away…

Most warriors I meet that I have trouble to follow are using either sword or greatsword. In combination with mobile strikes body shot becomes useless against them.

I was hoping someone would comment about Diamond Skin. I felt it was pretty strong against the full Dire builds but Celestial type builds could probably still be pretty powerful against them maybe. that is interesting about the Engi Nade/bomb. I have a hard time liking Nades but I could see them being nice under these circumstances. Nade/bomb builds (well most engi builds) lack in condi removal though. So it would be risky but I will have to give it a shot. Thanks for the input!

You also have to realize that stealth is a thief’s only form of defense (unless you’re an acro thief). All classes have their own defense system: warriors are innately tanky and have a high health pool, Guardians regen a lot of health and are tanky, Eles regen massive amounts of health. Stealth is the only was a thief CAN survive. Also, thieves do still take full damage while in stealth, so they’re don’t go into god mode like you see to believe. Stealth kittenes most people off because it’s different, and takes an entirely different strategy to play against. It requires you to THINK, okay he went into stealth, what is he going to do now. After a few stealths you should be able to tell how the thief plays, and from this, how to counter him. And finally, if someone kills you as thief, remember that it is entirely possible that they are simply good (and yes, possibly better than you).
On another note, If you nerf stealth, you need to give thief another reliable means of survival (not all of us want to go acro thieves; I personally find it quite boring).
But ya, you shouldn’t be able to stealth off of walls etc.

You also need to remember many forms of combat require you to be able to see a target to continue to hit them. Warrior swinging a sword can still damage you but a gun will not do any damage. etc

My biggest problem with this constant stealthing is you can easily burst conditions every 4 secs as a thief or have clones constantly apply conditions while you just sit in stealth regening as the opponent swings around wildly. Mix and repeat until the opponent puts all their cleanses on cool down. It is Stupid easy to kill people with a stealth condition build…stupid easy…its fun and kind of funny but that combination that a condi thief has is just plain unfair for most professions to compete against.

Countering Condi Thieves

Wiseman.4075

I posted in the thief forum to focus on their input as well but how about from my fellow engis!!

I am sitting at still never having been able to beat a Condi Mes or Condi Thief in a 1v1!!

The stealth (especially the thief) is so hard to counter. I played my own condi thief for a past couple days to get an idea of its weaknesses. Build was Koroshi’s Immortal thief build. Dire Gear with HP regen, Init regen, Condi cleanse with 50% increase in movement. Basically I could out cleanse and out apply conditions on anyone. I only died once in a 1v1 and that was to a Stealth->Back Stab thief. I had a little trouble hear and there with heavy Condi Cleansing builds but could always disengage and get away. Otherwise, with the Dire Thief you just totally smoke people while jumping around twiddling your thumbs in stealth while they slowly die a painful death. Its a nice build but holy kitten How do you beat it on an engi? Full Melandru Runes/Lemongrass combo?

What are your strategies to beating this Super Powerful Dire Beast?

Alright so all puppies safely aside and the Powerful synergy of Dire Stealth Thief understood as being super powerful…how might you recommend taking them down? I recently had some trouble with a Meditation Guardian…(never really happened before) but he had lemongrass food on so my guess is he was fully geared to counter conditions.

So I suppose I will finally come to my final conclusion:

Dire Condi Thief is Crazy Strong!
Countering it is just having the Counter Condition Meta
Or run the kitten away if possible

Its definitely fun to play and can absolutely reck people but its not much of a challenge unless the opponent has tons of cleansing or you are outnumbered. Happy to hear of any more input for strategies against them.

I know you thieves will probably all punt a puppy when I say Condition thief is just Way crazy strong and probably needs to be toned down but I have to say it: Condition thief is CRAZY strong!!!

I mostly roam on my engi and tend to only have troubles fighting Dire Condi Thief/Mes…like never have ever beaten one 1×1. I finally had to grab my own thief and followed the “Immortal Condi Thief” build. Yup easily destroyed people without hardly trying! (Only person to beat me 1v1 was a stealthy backstab thief…I claim no fame to thief play) But seriously the amount of survivability/stealth/regen/condi cleanse/mobility and hitting 2000Condi dmg (higher than my engi even) and I could out cleanse Necros since stealth clears conditions so just CnD until they don’t have much left. And this build allows for your own Condi burst every 4secs. The Dire Condi thief is just plane Crazy OP! You can easily sit in an enemy group and pick them off especially having the #2 skill so not even Nike Warriors can get away…

The point of the post is How do you recommend fighting one?!?! After playing mine for two days my conclusion is you just can’t unless you are a thief yourself or maybe a Diamond skin ele (maybe)?

I am really curious if anyone has given Celestial armor with bomb build a hardy try. I like the idea of elixer infused bombs, nades and elixer gun with celestial stats but I’m not sure if that is lacking in the end. Nades/bombs is good for both power and condi builds so it seems viable. Adding elixer infused bombs seems like it would help with sustain over all. Anyone try this?

I gave it a try in PvP earlier today but felt strongest in Settler’s gear. Really strong actually but celestial still seems like it would really capitolize on a 30.0.30.0.10 type of build.

Any thoughts from people that do a lot of pvp/wvw?

WvW Tankiest Elementalist Build

Wiseman.4075

For Uber tanky (don’t plan on dieing much) WvW zerg build. I go with a combo of Soldier/Knights Armor + Cavalier Trinkets. 0.0.30.30.10 using Diamond skin. High Toughness and as long as HP remain above 90% I’m immune to Conditions. Rune of Melandru with Food switching between more dps or tankiness depending on the situation. Staff as a the weapon of choice. Very very tanky and probably a bit over kill but it is really good at mitigating both condition dmg and direct dmg.

Normal balanced build is running Celestial armor + Scholar Runes with Cavalier/Zerker Trinkets. 0.10.30.20.10 usually swapping food and weapons depending on how feel about the situation.

I am guessing…and I stand to be corrected, is the DS allows he to be more aggressive bombing into a group because he knows he has a good chance of escaping because most of the CC will be absorbed.

DS does nothing after taking around 1800 damage. You don’t try to escape when 90%+ health. Does not compute.

Like I said, it would make a lot more sense to run the cleansing flame fire trait and
+10% fire damage, both of which always work and both enhance burst. Not to mention 200 power is way more useful that 300 condition damage in a GC spec.

DS is very underrated. I can not tell you how many times condi specs have just unloaded on me just to sit there confused on why i’m not dying. Not to mention it stops people who open with CC. It is a very powerful trait and very underrated you just need to know HOW to use it. This of course is a roaming video and so in a roaming environment most do not run into diamond skin eles as it is not the meta. So most are very confused making it quite funny. However this build is very powerful against the most skilled condi players even if they know you are DS as I’ve test in OS… it is really bad against pure power builds as you lack the boons and EA which really helps your survivability.

Going 30 into earth is for DS of course but also for the 10% damage mod with full endurance and the 300 toughness. With lack of protection boon you need all the toughness you can get. Going 20 into fire would drop you down pretty low making you even more squishy. That would truly make you a glass cannon. I’ve experimented going 10 into fire before.. it does not pay .. diamond skin is what makes this build work hands down you just need to know how to play with it…….

I agree DS is underrated. Using this with Cavalier trinkets virtually shuts down all builds that run the Dire gear. Playing in mostly WvW, I can say I have been targeted by Necros trying to unleash their Condi Burst/ Epidemic on my team but I completely negated their burst. I also really like this when it comes to condition warriors using Pin down right at the start. DS may not be the Best most useful trait to have All the time but it sure has worked out a lot for me. It is super useful but that 90% HP line makes it so it isnt OP.

Feedback regarding Conditions

Wiseman.4075

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not really complaining about not being able to fight condition builds. They are easy enough to counter like direct dps but you just have to build directly to counter them.

I am merely bring up the idea of separating Soft CC from damage dealing conditions. I was curious if that would be worth looking into or would it just cause further problems. Just like Stun, Daze and Knockbacks are different than immobilze and freeze. I could see where in some cases an immobilize would be more deadly than a burn but the immobilize isnt going to be the cause of your death.

Just having the projectile move faster would make this much better. The only time I tend to get it to work is shooting it at a group of people running at me or hitting somebody that just ran into a static field. Cast time is whatever in my opinion. It is the projectile speed that would make all the difference.

Feedback regarding Conditions

in Profession Balance

Posted by: Wiseman.4075

Wiseman.4075

I have been reading a lot about how to defend against all of the condition builds I have been running into lately. My personal solution to this has just been running an Ele with Diamond Skin combined with Celestial Armor and Cavalier Trinkets. This allows me to defend against the initial burst of condition builds if not totally negate their damage if they are running Dire gear since they have no power.

However, for other professions people have been talking about the lack of condition cleanses to account for the non-stop application of conditions.

So I had a thought, why not separate damaging conditions from soft crowd control conditions. This would allow for those condition cleansing utility skills to clear damaging conditions by priority. This would allow you to use your condition cleanse to clear that burning, poison and bleeding before clearing the immoblize, cripple or freezing.

Just a suggestion I thought I would throw out there to be talked about. Maybe it would a terrible idea in the end or maybe it could be really useful.

My favorite has been GS; Sw/horn as a very aggressive pve build. Swapping out of GS for LB during large boss fights.

Man I feel you on this topic! I have been giving my fully geared level 80 ranger another hardy try to be competitive. I really enjoy this class but there are just too many things that the class lacks! Breaking combat when jumping around like an idiot with Sword is super annoying! I’ve been trying to get torch slayer but half the time I sit there tapping Torch 5 but he wont stop sticking them with the pointy end. Longbow barrage has almost got me killed due to retaliation in WvW. I literally sat on a wall, did barrage and almost died…The survivability is lackluster. In WvW last night I was trying to help kill a warrior…I had 2900armor and almost died to whirling attack while he was immobilized. In WvW I try to use the “Protect Me Shout” like warrior’s immune to damage stance but my pet is dead in 3sec to random aoes rendering this utility useless everytime it is needed. The only saving grace is you can fight the endless fight underwater…but who cares. Sorry, I was avoiding complaining but I really enjoy Ranger in open world pve but urgh…cant take him anywhere else.

I would be SO happy if dps/survivability was improved, sword was redone and pets could be stored perma for a boost in personal stats. Pets are good in PvE but are useless if not a total liability everywhere else.

Upgrade to turret Idea

So I was thinking of ways to upgrade turrets. Maybe its been said before but why not have an elite upgrade to make turrets mobile? It would be the same concept as spirit rangers making their spirits mobile. Along with the mobility upgrade, the turrets should have an ascetic upgrade to look like mini golems or at least be given crappy looking Charrgineering junky wheels. I thought I would throw this idea out there. It would make me play turrets instead of ugly hobosacks just for the funny quality of it if anything. Plus it would be so awesome to see an havoc group of Engis with their army of little golem robots!!!

Why are there not more engies?

in Engineer

Wiseman.4075

I can agree to the majority of what is already said. I love my engineer but some issues have made me shelve it most of game play now. Things that I often hear as a big turn off: 1.) Hobo sacks 2.) Legendaries are weaksauce 3.) Hobo sacks still have exotic stats even if you have ascended equipped 4.) Dps will always be weaker than other classes (due to having a large variety of skills with kits having no cd) 5.) They aren’t the most flashy 6.) They are a non-traditional class 7.) They aren’t really “best” at anything 8.) Playing an engineer effectively is like playing a piano

Personally, I like that most people don’t play them and don’t understand them though. This gives an advantage in PvP and WvW and almost every engineer I run into is running a different build and different weapons and you just never know what they have up their sleeve.

It is my understanding the crit dmg stats are best on trinkets but would that include celestial? I am super curious if anyone can understand this crazy theory craft stuff.

So I played around with the build editor for awhile trying to get near the stats that I personally want. What I found was using Full celestial armor versus a mix of armor stats the celestial looked better. With the set up with full Celestial armor there was a loss of 100 points in power and 60pts in armor but a gain of 2% crit chance (not much I know), 210 health, 147healing, 147 condition dmg, 11% crit dmg. So for me personally…I think I have convinced myself to go full Celestial Armor for my build personally. I play a balanced staff build so it looks rather nice.

My final stats with my celestial armor build were:
Atk: 2863
Crit: 29
Armor: 2903
Health: 17215
Conddmg: 347
+Critdmg: 63%
Healing: 447

If you include the 25 stacks of Precision from weapon plus 100 Power/condition dmg and 250 vitality bonus from the guard killer/defense buff I feel the build would be siting comfortable.

Going full celestial is a mistake. You get more stats but you are losing power.
Using a few celestial pieces for trinkets or armor can work very well however.

It’s the overall stats that count anyway. Doesn’t matter what the stats on the armor are, what matter is the sum of your stats after when you mix it with trinkets.

This is why a legendary weapon is so great: change your build to a more offensive one then change your staff to vitality/toughness to balance the stats, etc.

Im using half berserker/valkyrie armor, defensive/celestial trinkets, offensive build (0/30/0/20/20) and defensive stats on Bifrost.

Overall my meteors crit at 4-5k with a few stacks of might and with my stacks of guard defense and food I have 22,500hp (took me a year to optimize my stats, they are quite epic… – all ascended except armor)

I’m curious what your overall stats are siting at? I’ve been trying to find a good balanced build for staff myself and though I like the idea of celestial, I like the idea of making small tweeks and adjustments using various armor/trinket stats rather than going deep into celestial primarily as it is expensive and time gated. I’ve been thinking, rather than celestial, going with Valkyrie/knights Armor with Cavalier trinkets. I figure I can swap the trinkets in and out with condition/tanky/dps depending on the situation.

Well you forgot about the Guard killer and Defense against Guard buffs. So until Wxp becomes account bound a little later down the road you’re also looking at facing people with 100 extra Power, Condition dmg and 250 more Vitality. So just level your Guard knowing you can’t compete on “even” ground for a good long while and don’t let it bother you if you can’t take on a fully geared fully stacked enemy in WvW. Sucks but that’s how it is I guess. I play five characters in WvW so I feel your pain.

My Elementalist will be my first profession to gear in Ascended since every little bit helps. I was leaning between Knights/soldiers or Celestial for WvW Staff/scepter play with Trinkets filling in stats that I feel I lack. Celestial is nice to be able to swap builds based on Healing support or Conditions or direct dmg or tank but seems to always lack. So Idk, I’m going to keep watching these threads to get some good gear advice. Celestial always seems like the safer bet though.

I noticed this last night too. I like the land change but it rendered it totally useless underwater and I was pretty disappointed. My guess is they didn’t think of the underwater aspect of the change since it is pretty obvious it would be useless. Hopefully, they change it back for underwater combat as the skill was very useful underwater.

Hmm I had 53 with me and I am aware you can only charge them once per day. I guess it’s likely I charged one the night before and forgot that I did. I was thinking there would be a little hint saying you had charged one already for the day but I guess not.

I personally really like the new Arcane Wave targeting. However, it is totally and completely useless in underwater fighting….
