There’s not much permanent going on right now. WvW has a new ranking system so if you like WvW you have that to get. Today a new patch came out that added a new temp zone and some new recipes. We also get achievement rewards; you get a chest at 100 points, and then 500, 1000, 1500, etc. If you’re in a guild there’s guild missions you can get in on.

The design of Guild Wars 2 makes it seem like there’s far fewer players than there really are. In a game like WOW, end game is standing in whatever the capital city of choice is these days and waiting for LFD/LFR/BG to pop up and complain how all the other classes are overpowered. In GW2 there is no reason to stay in the cities rather than go do stuff out in the world. You also have WvW and SPvP taking players out of the world.

Gems are a safe place to store your gold since it’s in ANet’s best interest to keep the exchange rate sane. I’d be wary of buying items since ANet has purposely made item prices rise or drop. Then again it’s risk vs. reward, if you’re lucky you could buy an item that’s cheap now and skyrockets in price in the future, or you could buy something that drops to vendor price.

Im sorry but don’t be selfish, they don’t have to all die because you couldn’t do it. Either wait til they legitimately wipe because they aren’t able to do it with fewer people, or let them win it without you. You don’t deserve chest items if you couldn’t do it either. This play style makes rezzing strategic. Waypoint zerging doesnt make any sense and makes content way to easy.

That’s not how it works, for anybody to res everybody has to die. If somebody ends up in a spot where they can’t be reached then everybody has to die since there’s no way for them to come back. If anybody disconnects or leaves everybody has to leave.

Do you think events should increase in difficulty?

in Dynamic Events

Posted by: Yaos.4528

Yaos.4528

Another problem is the context in events. It’s like the difference between Doom and Call of Duty. In both games you’re running through long tunnels mowing down everything that gets in your way. What’s interesting is that you have less to do in COD than Doom; in Doom you have to find key cards and solve puzzles in addition to killing enemies with guns or big guns, in COD you follow a linear path and shoot enemies with guns or big guns. Despite this I’ve found COD to be more interesting than Doom since I know what I’m doing and why (though the story makes less sense than Doom).

Many events in GW2 usually have no context, just a flimsy story from an NPC that does not hold up under scrutiny. One I’m reminded of is a swamp where some inquest are trying to poison a swamp. I have no clue why they are trying to poison the swamp since nobody is around to tell me they are evil, but they have red names so they are evil. If the event fails you have to go collect kelp from a nearby lake to cure a bunch of hylek, once that event is completed that’s the end of it. There’s no conclusion or explanation, the inquest are still in the swamp, the hylek don’t seem to care they are there even though they just poisoned the swamp. They don’t attack the inquest, they don’t march over to their base to tell them to stop poisoning the swamp, it’s like they completely forgot it happened.

Escort quest could be interesting if there was any context around them. As a bonus the context of the quest would actually provide ideas for the event creator to make the event better. Like the pack doylak events that lead you to another town, they have little context in the world other than monsters attacking it that just happen to be the same subject of the zone. So in human lands it’s Centaur attacking, in Norn lands it’s Sons of Sanvir attacking. You can’t fail these events, and nothing is effected by the pack doylak making it or staying dead for hours on the road other than a merchant that has items nobody would want to buy. From a story perspective these events serve no purpose. The player will find the town without the event, nothing bad happens if the event fails and nothing good happens if it finishes. Nobody says, “we should probably do something to stop these raids on our pack doylak’s.”

Some may say that the doylak’s are needed to guide players, but if this were true you would see this at the very start of the game; none of the newbie zones have these events until you have already figured out you need to run around the world on your own.

When making an event the question should be asked, “does this event serve any purpose other than to exist?” If the answer is no, create a reason for the event to exist. Create supporting events to help the event exist. If I’m escorting a pack doylak why can’t I take the fight to the enemy once I’m done? Are we just going to let the centaur harass our supply lines?

Do you think events should increase in difficulty?

in Dynamic Events

Posted by: Yaos.4528

Yaos.4528

So I’ve almost made it to the end zones (level 76), and I’ve discovered that my initial complaint of events being too easily defeated is just a tiny problem, all those cool event chains I came across in the early zones have completely vanished. Nearly every single event is a completely disconnected experience.

In Straits of Devastation there’s supposedly a war going on, yet nothing in the zone actually shows this. Despite the fact that the “front line” had moved quite a bit inland absolutely nothing changed, risen were still rooted in place behind us doing absolutely nothing of consequence except making players cast swiftness on theirselves. There were events, but for this war they make absolutely no sense. Why is there a random giant walking around in a circle and why does he have an event? Why is there a downed chopper in the zone; where did it come from, where does it go if we win the event? Why are there choppers being attacked by AA? After we beat the event they did not do anything, I’m fairly certain the ones that survived just vanished.

There’s no possible way for a single player to do anything in the zone, so naturally everybody in the zone will join up with the huge group running around (or leave if they can’t get through the sea of risen) completing these events that repop minutes later.

The events themselves make no sense, we are in a war zone, yet attacks consist of escorts to the destination where a final boss that is either very easy or absolutely impossible will spawn. There’s no lead up to these events, they just happen, this occurs in most events in previous zones as well.

I’ve only been able to take part of the Balthazar event, so let’s take that as an example. As far as I could tell it was stuck at the end point, where we continually were attacking the temple and getting stompped on by a boss that instantly kills you if he targets you. This should be the final event in a long chain, not an event that restarts every 20 minutes.

There should be events getting supplies to attack the temple, getting NPCs to the rally point, getting siege weapons into place. There should be events to recon the enemy forces, find weaknesses in their defenses. There could be events where you have to take out enemy emplacements, commanders, supplies. Each event would contribute to the difficulty of the final event; the more events we win the easier the final event will be. We could have a huge army behind us, siege weapons to hit the monsters from afar, reduce their difficulty with the loss of their commanders. If we fail too many events then they decide attacking the target will just be too difficult and they have to reorganize and consider a different target.

Once we take over the tower the enemy starts doing the same thing, with each event getting more and more difficult until there’s pretty much no way to stop the oncoming horde of risen. The front line moves back and forth, but the power of the undead keeps pushing us back.

The thing is, there are some tiny glimmers of this in the zone, they don’t appear to actually have any effect on anything other than winning or losing the event, but they are there.

Do you think events should increase in difficulty?

in Dynamic Events

Posted by: Yaos.4528

Yaos.4528

I agree with the OP, but I don’t think this hits the core of the problem.
The major problem with the event chains are the choke points.
Instead of increasing difficulty, event chains should start circumventing choke points, when they get completed by the players all the time.
Centaurs keep on repairing the bridge over and over without any success?
Have them attack another location, they normally wouldn’t at this stage of the chain!

I was actually hoping high level PvE zones would take gameplay elements from WvW where the monsters are actively fighting against the players instead of wandering about and spawning in with events. That’s another thread though. I do like the idea of a different objective. Only an insane person would keep trying to the same thing expecting to get a different result, maybe those Centaurs should find a shallow place in the river to cross.

There are a lot of ways to scale the difficulty of an event, but in most events they scale by adding more of the same monsters. They don’t add new objectives, new monsters don’t appear, and monsters don’t use new tactics. In my opinion ,events for a single person should be fairly easy unless there is a gameplay reason to make them difficult, like the difficulty scaling we’ve been discussing or because there is a story reason that the event is difficult. I don’t think anybody would expect to beat a “stop the invading hordes” event all on their own.

Anyways, back to increasing difficulty. As difficulty scales up monsters should start to use new tactics.

Imagine this, a horde of monsters are heading your way, your group readies theirselves as the horde approches, it will be a tense fight, then everybody fires off their AOEs and kills everything within seconds, not counting any veterans that may have made their way in, they will take about 10 seconds to take down.

Now imagine this, the same horde of monsters are coming, but you see some enemies you’ve not seen before, obviously a programming mistake since we can only have one type of monster in an event, maybe two if we wanted ranged and melee. It will be a tense fight, then everybody fires off their AOEs and suddenly the new monster puts up a reflective wall that bounces the ranged attacks straight back at the caster (only the caster, I don’t want griefers killing me with this) and stuns any melee attackers.

The wall goes down and the melee attackers get back up, we’re in hand to hand combat, the monsters use some more tactics that keep players from being able to just AOE spam, but sometimes the players can get an AOE attack in. As you’re fighting, off in the distance you see a group of monsters running your way, obviously not part of this event because monsters can only attack in one group at a time. Down to one monster, this will be easy! You close in for the kill, only for that group of monsters to come through with their own AOE spam from behind.

This is just an example, no need to make it that annoying, but it’s a bit better than harder means more monsters that can be easily dispatched. I’m not saying you can’t make an event filled with monsters, those guys in LOTR could kill the heck out of Orcs.

Keep it random though so people can’t say, “we have 10 people so the anti-AOE monster group is next then the group that attempts to draw us into an ambush spawns.” Create different groups of monsters that could spawn in the event, apply tactics that the groups are allowed to use, and let the RNG decide which ones can go in. I know this would be fairly difficult, both for the AI and to make sure it’s actually fun, so it would be a long way off to get anything like that.

Just don’t go nuts like Diablo 3 with the random elites that can kill you in seconds after they stunlock you.

I’ve not fought it yet, but from what I’ve read he’s a very basic tank and spank boss without any tank and whole lot of spank. There are gampelay elements they could have thrown in that does not require coordination between players (standard don’t stand in the red circle, watch the pattern so you’re not in the wrong spot, give some players new enemy friends that will not disengage), so it’s odd to see them not have much going on in the fight.

Do you think events should increase in difficulty?

in Dynamic Events

Posted by: Yaos.4528

Yaos.4528

Right now there are certain events that can not be lost. In Kessex Hills the Centaurs are never going to repair the bridge, in Norn land the Sons of Sanvir will never take any territory. Thing is, the losing events have some cool things that happen that most players will never see, like when Centaurs siege the human town. I think it would be a bit more interesting if events scale up in difficulty as they are beaten. To keep events (and event chains) from seesawing in difficulty maybe not have it based only on the last event only, it could be a percentage of wins and losses in a certain amount of time, and maybe even include surrounding events in the difficulty scaling.

The invisible hand is working, since you are no longer putting food items up on the TP you have decreased the supply. Once enough people stop putting cooking items on the TP the demand will be greater than the supply, causing the price to go up. ANet can increase demand by giving cooking items more buffs if they feel demand for cooking items are not as high as they want.
