Leveling guide?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Yramrag.3026

Yramrag.3026

There is no specific leveling build. Leveling is a great time to experiment since changing utilities, using different set of weapons, or even changing traits, are easy. So experiment away. As Zaxares said, as long as your character don’t die easily, that is a reasonable build to use at that point, at least until you unlock more skills or traits. Then you experiment again.

There is usually no hurry or urgency to do personal story. when it became to hard, just level a few and come back. That’s what I do all the time – I do my personal story 5 to 10 levels above the recommended. Sure, the loot gears becomes obsolete, but the XP are still good. I have done this with squishy profession such as my Ele and Thief.

Precision, Crit, Power, and Damage

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Yramrag.3026

Yramrag.3026

Here’s my take, in simple terms:

Power = the amount of damage you can dish out, consistently

Crit Damage = the amount of additional damage (on top of what Power allowed you) you can dish out, base on your crit chance. The base crit damage is an additional of 50% damage added to what your Power allowed. Additional crit damage (due to stats, boons, etc.) is added on top of this 50%.

Crit chance = chance to produce Crit Damage

Precision = Increase your Crit chance.

So base on the above simple description, what you want to increase will base on how you want to play your profession, and what kind of build. For example:

If you don’t care about dishing out additional spike damage and are more interested in making sure you have consistently good damage, than focus on Power.

If you want to dish out good burst and spike damage, you want to have a good crit chance and crit damage. Bit when you focus on this two (three actually, since Precision come into play for crit chance) , know that your Power will suffer. The result: not-so-good consistent damage, but when you do crit, you do some really good damage. How often will that happen? Depend on your crit chance.

Exception: Glass Cannon Zerker build can pack all these stats: Power, Precision, Crit Damage. But their survivability is greatly compromised. This build is base on “kill-them first-before-getting-killed” philosophy. So for this build, there is no need to balance between the stats, just get all of them!

So how you balance, depend on how you want to play your profession.

Human (or charr, asura, take your pick), by nature, are negative. Bad things always got remembered, mentioned, debated much much more than positive things/news. This is very common in real life – hence you see around you, more gossips than accolades, more criticism than praises. That’s just nature.

So I usually would not read too much into negative stuff on an internet forum, because it is usually magnified more than 10 times what you will experience in real life.

It would help if you also tell us what profession you are playing currently, and at what level now. But GW2 is a game you don’t have to try to level as quick as possible. Due to level scaling, even if you are much higher level in a lower level zone, you don’t get that much advantage (some, but not that much) over the lower level mobs because you will be scaled to a level close to theirs. So just play the game naturally, explore the area, gather nodes when you see them, participate in events, go from hearts to hearts, play your personal story, go conquer a vista or point of interest. There are a lot to do.

If you are only referring to the ones in the Personal Story at Claw Island, yes, they are tough even for your level, especially cloth-wearer. In fact, I find personal story are harder to do unless you are at least 5 to 10 levels above the recommended level. I have brought 4 different profession through this story and they are all tough. So don’t worry about it.

Transferring and the TP

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Yramrag.3026

Yramrag.3026

There is nothing to transfer. Think of the TP as a huge cooking pot where all servers have access to it (to grab stuff from, and to throw stuff into). When you list something in TP, you are throwing your stuff in this huge cooking pot. When you transfer to another server, your stuff are still in the pot, not with you. So just grab your stuff back anytime (unless someone else bought it off).

What gear should i get ?

I run with two sets of runes: 6Xsuperior Soldier to utilize my shouts (give boons and to remove conditions), and the boon duration combo (2 superior Monk + 2 superior Water + 2 major sanctuary). So depending on what I think is more needed in a run, I will swap to the rune set needed. If you think you can’t afford two sets of armor at the moment, I suggest you grab the 6xsuperior solders for added toughness and great utility.

As for trinkets, I started with all Soldiers (Power, Toughness & Vitality) that I get from Grenth temple (any PVT trinkets is a good starting point). Then depend on my need, I re-adjust. If I needed more damage and crit, I trade in some Berserker to ramp up my crit and crit damage. If I think I just need more crit damage instead of vitality, I swap in Cavelier, or Valkyrie for more crit dmg instead of toughness.

So feel free to experiment, and mix and match, until you feel you hit the right spot for your toon in terms of damage and survivability.

More importantly, what build are you running with your Guardian?

I melee all the time at the Dragons (except Jormag) and no probelm surviving. You just need to know when to pull back, heal, and use your shouts and utilities. In dungeon run, I always run with Greatsword and Hammer, and has no problem with bosses. The idea is to intelligently use your shouts (as you might have guess by now, I use lots of shouts), virtues and other skills. Don’t think yourself as a “tank” where yyou need to face the boss and “absorb” hits all the time – you pull back and heal away from the boss when you need to, dodge when you have to, and (again) use shouts and distributes boons to your party members as much as possible (because I am running Altruistic Healing, that’s why).

I have both level 80 guardian and thief. Thief was my very first character, and explored the most with, while Guardian now has become my favorite and main.

For solo-ing PvE, nothing beats Guardian for its survivability. With Guardian, I am always raring to go, explore new world, and take on veterans and multiple mobs by myself. Thief on the other hand, due to the squishiness leveling, I tend to be more careful and reserve when taking on multiple mobs and veterans.

After attaining 80 for both, I also find myself running dungeons with Guardian more often. It is just that knowing my Guardian will likely to survive what ever surprises threw at him, that now I play guardian most of the time. About the only thing I miss when playing Guardian is the running speed I had with my Thief.

I don’t really care much about defensive abilities, I just want to be able to dish out a lot of damage, in a little amount of time. I can defend myself through my control abilities I talked about.

I know for a fact that “Stun” and “Immobilize” is different: Stun basically disable the target totally (can’t move, can’t use skills except the ones that can break stun), while Immobilize just root the target, preventing them from moving/dodging/leaping. Target can still use skills if within range.

Classes

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Yramrag.3026

Yramrag.3026

Almost every class is viable in PvE. Almost every class is viable in WvW (because, zerg wins). Viability of class in PvP really depends on build and (more importantly) how well the player handles their class. If a player like a certain style of play, he will certainly enjoy the class more, and hence, play more effectively (most of the time, anyway). If he doesnt enjoy the playing style, then even if the class is so-called “easy mode”, the player will have a hard time.

So. Try out EVERY class, see what you like.

Advice on gear at 80

in Players Helping Players

Yramrag.3026

You should equip exotics as soon as you can afford. They make a difference as you try to complete your world, finish your quests, do dungeons, WvW, etc. I wouldn’t bother with ascended too much, at least until you want to do higher level fractal dungeons. They offer slightly better stats than exotics, but not worth the effort to try to get them for anything outside Fractal dungeons.

If you are after exotics, it will be very hard to “get the armor and weapons as and when” you come across it. They are really rare drops from mobs or chests. What you want is to deliberately go and equipment yourself with the kind of exotics you want, either by
1. Buying from TP (can cost between 1.5g to 5g for a typical no-frill exotic armor or weapon)
2. Buy from Dungeon vendors using dungeon tokens (after you complete the dungeons several times)
3. Buy from Temple vendors using Karma
4. Craft them yourself

I find crafting and buying off TP is the easiest way to get the exotics with the stats-mix you want (most of the time). But they are generally more expensive to acquire (the materials).

Obtaining exotics using dungeons tokens are cheaper, but you will need to get into a group to do those dungeons that you want (each dungeon features vendors that sell 3 specific stats combo armor/weapon).

Getting exotics with karma from Temple is also easy, except that armors sold there are usually of unpopular stats-mix.

Here’s a great site that will help you decide how to get your exotics:

Leveling?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Yramrag.3026

Yramrag.3026

My advice is not to rush leveling. Take time to explore what GW2 has to offer, and it does offer up content even for low to mid levels.

GW2 gives XP for almost everything you do: explore a new place, get to a vista, place of interest, gathering, crafting, extra XP for killing new mobs. And when you run out of place to explore or quests to do in your starting area, consider visiting other races’ starting area, via the Asura gates found in Lions Arch, which can be reached via an Asura gate in your race’s capital city.

Yramrag.3026

Guardian has lots of skills to reduce, and even negate damages totally. This makes them tougher to kill than Warriors, despite their inferior HP pool. Very often my Guardian is the last one standing while my party of warriors get wiped one by one in a bad dungeon run. Less DPS than a warrior, but much tougher and can provide great support to allies via boons and other skills. Fine-tuning stats allows you to spec your Guardian to be more aggressive if you want ( in exchange for less durability). However with very limited speed buff, range skills and the nature of their other core skills, Guardian is not your roaming type.

I relog, when into the game, and less than 5 mins, I was kicked out again with the same error message. From then onwards, I am unable to login to the game.

At the same time, I could not access the GW2 forum (I checked, I can access other websites just fine).

After about 30 mins to an hour, I could login to the game again, and access the forum. All these happened at about GMT+8, just over midnight.

About the recommended levels on quests

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Yramrag.3026

Yramrag.3026

In my experience, recommended level for main quests are rather deceiving. Unless you are warrior or Guardian that can survive fairly well, you will almost always have a hard time doing main quest at the recommended level. I usually do main quest at 5 to 10 levels above the recommended level. sure, the reward might not be useful by then, but the XP still good. There is no actual incentives to do main quest at recommended level.

If you need to level, there are plenty of XP outside the main quests. After completing your starter zone, go to the other races’ starting zone for more heart quests and XP; gather everything, explore new areas for more XP. Before you know it, your level is a few above the recommended level for your main quest.

Best Profession for a GW2 newbie

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Yramrag.3026

Yramrag.3026

Warrior or Guardian would be your best choice. For newbies, you want to be able to survive relatively well while learning the various aspects of the game, such as combat mechanics, exploration options, quests, events, etc.

Both warriors (with superior health and heavy armor) and Guardian (superior damage mitigation skills and heavy armor) will help you to survive PvE while you learn the various aspects of the game. Both professions are melee-oriented. If you are more interested in range, than Ranger will be good for survival because your pet can tank for you while you dish out range damage.

Don’t go Elementalist – you will die a lot in the initial part of leveling while learning the game, and the profession is hard to master as it requires a lot of situation awareness to switch attunement effectively.

Edit: Just saw the other questions from OP. Both warriors and guardian are effective at end-game, and are welcomed in dungeon runs and PvP.

There is no law broken. But there is a betrayal of trust - something we all universally frowned upon. Unfortunately, some of you argued about the semantic of “stealing”, debated whether it is a guild leaders’ fault, etc., which has somewhat diluted the gravity of what OP is about to do. By saying “it is a bad thing”, yet immediately says “it’s the guild leader’s fault” or “it is not stealing” indirectly lessen the OP’s guilt if he does it.

If it is a bad thing, don’t make OP think it is “OK” to do it. He won’t read you argument – he will just see “it is the guild leader’s fault”.

Just say “NO” and “DON’T DO IT”.

Winterlove, have you tried asking this in your guild? If still no one in guild wants to talk to you, you might want to change to another guild.

Or, try using the Map channel to ask while in Lion’s Arch for all your questions. You will get answers quicker that way. People are irritated because you post lots of rather trivia questions which you could have gotten the answers by doing a bit of searching and take initiative to ask in-game. Multiple posts with just one single trivia question filled up the forum and push the other good questions down to the next page of the forum. If you keep doing this, people are going to ignore you or give you sarcastic answers when they see your post – and what if you have a genuine question you want to get answers for next time? So .. probably a bug, I guess?

How did I see those bigger numbers on the Slave Driver?

Does that mean Combat log do not reflect eventual damage on the mob, but rather my basic damage unmodified by mob’s vulnerability and other external buff (warrior banner) that I might have?

I also noticed this happened only with Whirling Wrath and not my other skill. Any idea why?
