Making rare-exotics through crafting?

in Crafting

Posted by: Yramrag.3026

Yramrag.3026

As someone mentioned, it is possible to get dungeons token to buy your exotic armor. But sometimes they do not have exactly what you need (in terms of stats combination). Also, getting into a group to farm dungeons might sometimes be hard for people who do not like to do dungeons (yes, there are people who dislike doing dungeons).

Crafting exotics can be expensive if you buy all your materials, including ecto, which are expensive. However I have crafted full exotics for my Thief without buying any ecto. You get ectos when you savage level 75+ rare or exotics (armor or weapon). I have been salvaging rares I found in drops and got 1 to 3 ecto per salvage (up to 5 if you are savlaging exotics), using the Master Salvage Kit, 75% of the time. I do farm for these rare drops in popular farming area in Orr.

Alternatively, if could craft the level 75+ rare armor (that does not require ecto), and then salvage them for ecto. I can do that because while adventuring and farming, I do get those tier 6/7 materials which I used to craft the rares.

Leveling Cooking is so hard

Yramrag.3026

I’ve 400 in Armorcrafting, Jeweller, Leatherworks, and recently trying to level up cooking. I had not much problem leveling the other crafts, but I found it hard going for cooking. the problem is with getting the recipes.

The Discovery method is so awkward, I have tons of food mats appearing in the interface, and I have to “guess” by trial and error clicking each one for various combination, hoping to hit upon a new recipe – it is so tedious! The auto-unlocked recipe base on level is so limited, and grey out so fast. I’m not sure where else to get recipes.

The only orange recipes left which I can get some XP are the rare dyes, and the mats are so expensive and difficult to farm (Yam anyone?). Can any good chef give me some advice please?

Plus Runes of Magic has an Aussie server so i get no lag.. like here..it has a lot more skills too.

I smile a little. Glad to see someone played this little game here in GW2 – I played Runes of Magic for almost 3 years, and only recently semi-retired. But I think you have been away for a long time: there is no longer an “Aussie” server.

Many things have since changed.

The Aussie-based GMs have been let go. There are no more Aussie staff running the game in Australia. And just a month ago, they move the “Aussie” server to Florida. Yes, the United States. So now the ping in “Aussie” server is the same one you get as if you are in a US server. No explanation, no notice – server got moved just like that in a small “regular” maintenance. Many regulars in Thalia has quit the game. I log on now and then to catch up with guildies, and to actually enjoy a round of Guild Siege. The Siege is the one thing I hope Guild Wars 2 will give us (basically a guild vs guild arena) soon.

Ever since the last major patch, my PC has randomly reboot itself (following a blue screen of death) while playing GW2. This could occur anytime, anywhere in GW2 – once it reboot immediately after the loading screen after character selection, another time it reboot while I am in the middle of a boss fight in a dungeon. I even had a reboot once when I was just running the GW2 launcher to login. This rebooting doesn’t seem to happen when I play other games on this PC.

What Gear With AH Build?

in Guardian

Posted by: Yramrag.3026

Yramrag.3026

Running the same trait distribution, I’ve been using full Knights armour (no siginficant runes yet, some MF stuff), with full soldier trinkets (P/V/T) inserted with Emerald Orbs (Pre/T/P). I am also running with a berserker Hammer and GS.

I feel I am not getting enough precision (crit rate is only 38%), so I instead go for full Knights trinkets (or even berseker trinkets)?

As far as spectacular AoE goes, you can’t go wrong with Elementalist. The ability to know when to switch attunements base on situation is almost a game in itself. Depend on builds, you can spec your Elementalist to be less squishy – not with heavier amour, but knowing how to master the 4 elements and know when to move, when to dodge. You will cast protections, you will throw AoE, you will pew pew, and you will heal.

But it is not going to be easy to master the elements – you will learn through hard work, die a couple of times in the beginning (OK, maybe more), and then you will learn how to move, when to run, etc. But it will be great fun.

One build to rule them all?

in Guardian

Posted by: Yramrag.3026

Yramrag.3026

I’m glad you like it =)

I realized some time after posting this that this isn’t an entirely novel concept (lol) and there are many guides about this build.

I’m still trying to figure out another build, one that is different than the normal that offers more damage for less survivability but without going so far as to have paper defenses. I sometimes struggle with finding the guardian’s place in a party. We can give our party a few boons but only 1 or 2 unless you go full boon push build for an extra retaliation or something. Our damage isn’t as high as warriors. And healing our party is not our specialty.

I surprise myself sometimes with just how little I understand the guardian still.

I am running an identical build, except I use soldier jewelries instead of berserkers. May I know what your attributes (Attack, Armor, Crit rate, etc.)?

What's the purpose of "attack" attribute?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Yramrag.3026

Yramrag.3026

Since Attack is the sum of Power and Weapon Damage, it does give the player an indication or comparison of his attack prowess, when he switch different weapons around or gears that gives Power. Maybe that’s all it is for. So instead of trying to track two different values all over the place, you just look at this one stat.

How to make gold?

in Players Helping Players

Yramrag.3026

The shelter and pentinent camp events are great places to farm stuff. I sold all Heavy Mold Bags (you can get 10+ each run usually) at 2silver each to TP. I sold most green equipments/weapons. I savage the blues and greens with mats I want. Plus, you get a chance to get rare or even exotic equipment dropped by mob, which you can sell in TP. By the end of the runs in 2 hours, I usually have at least 1 gold more than when I first started.

Dungeons are another great source of income. I just ran 3XCitadel of Flame dungeon (all 3 paths) the other day with a great group, and in 2 hours, I got about more than 5, 6 gold for my effort.

Q: Beginner Tips

in Thief

Posted by: Yramrag.3026

Yramrag.3026

An excellent place to start and learn about the profession, crafting and other good stuff, is the Guild Wars Wiki. http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Main_Page

Speaking from my experience as a Thief, the crafting that are useful to Thief are leatherworks, weaponsmithing, jeweler. Food are generally useful too.

However, you should, at the moment, treat crafting as something you utilize to give you Experience Points for leveling your profession, rather then seeing it as a way to supply yourself with gears. The reason is because it is more expensive to craft an equipment and time consuming than to just buy it directly from Trading Post. The only time when crafting is profitable is when you start crafting the end-game exotics gears.

Salvage kits is used to salvage equipments and salvageable items. The broken down components are stuff you will need for crafting (although many of them can be mined all over the world).

Different weapons (and main-hand/off-hand combination) gives you different set of skills you can use. Try using them and see how you like them, base on your play style. Generally, Daggers are single-target melee, Swords are multiple-targets melee, pistols are single-target range, short-bows are multiple-targets range.

For traits and build information, just search through the forum or the internet – there are a lot of information on Thief builds. Choose one that you find fun to play with.

you don’t have to wait till max level to participate in PvP or WvW. When you enter these area, you are automatically scaled up to 80. This is especially for PvP tournament (Mist) where all your skills and traits are unlocked for you to play around with.

With the new laurels, it is possible to get ascended stuff (a little bit better than the end-game exotic gears) without ever stepping to dungeons or fractals. Also, you can get exotic gears via crafting, purchase using gold from TP, purchase using karma at Temple (after it is cleared), and rare drops from mobs.

Maybe one of your armor with vitality stats is broke. When you die, there is a chance your armor(s) will be damaged. When you damaged all your armor and you died again, there is a chance one of your armor will be broken. You cannot enjoy the stats provided by a broken armor. To restore damaged armor, you need to find a repair NPC to repair them.

As far as I know, there is no death penalty when you die (other than a chance that your armor will be damaged)

Sage Advice for Next Toon

Guardian has some similarity with Warrior – heavy armor, melee-focused (not as many range option as Warrior though). However Guardian has a much lower base HP compared to Warrior, but comes with a variety of skills and traits that boost defense and mitigate damages. Generally more survivable than warrior but probably DPS a little less than Warrior.

But if you are really looking at a vastly different playing experience, I would recommend the Elementalist. Commanding the 4 elements and ability to switch between them depending on situation is fun. While Guardian or Warrior can usually just rush into a fight, Elementalist squishy body requires careful planning and tactics to maximize DPS and survivability. I feel it is a profession that generally requires a lot more attention from the player, even in PvE. But it is fun.

Newcomer here. Need advice and how's my comp?

in Players Helping Players

Yramrag.3026

Last but not least, I’d like to know how well my new gaming rig will perform. It’s an ASUS ROG.

CPU: Intel Core_i7_2.7_GHz Processor 2.3GHz

GPU: Nvidia GTX 660M 2G GDDR5

RAM: 16gb SO-DIMM

I’m likely to turn the resolution down as full 1080p is overwhelming on my vision and I hate shadows universally across games, so I’ll be turning them off too. If anyone has any info on how well this comp will perform, I’d love to hear it. I spent a pretty penny on this guy, and I’d like to make sure it’ll get me places.

Well I am using a rather low/mid-end PC, with Xeon CPU (3GHz), 4G RAM, and (gasp!) Quadro FX 1700 (which is really old and rather low-end comparatively). I run GW2 in windowed mode, turn most graphics feature to “Low”, with no Post-Processing option. The game runs rather smoothly and with respectable frame rate even when the area is crowded.

I reckon with your rig, you can tune graphics option way high, and still get very good frame rate.

When to Salvage

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Yramrag.3026

Yramrag.3026

For Yellow or Orange, you will want to salvage because
- You want the materials (or hoarding), and have a chance at rare materials
- You want the Rune/Sigil that comes with it

You will usually reserve the expensive Master Salvage Kit and Black Lion Savage Kit for higher level items such as those level 70+.

Otherwise, check if it will sell a good price at Trading Post.

No Weapon Swapping Build

in Guardian

Posted by: Yramrag.3026

Yramrag.3026

Not quite, but yes. An Altruistic Healing Build heals you for each Boon you give.

So with Hammer, each time your number 1 ability (3rd hit in the chain) lands, you will get healed for every person that recieves ‘Protection’ from the Symbol that it puts on the ground.

Apart from the hammer strike (which grant the protection boon to allies), you should utilize Shouts, which gives multiple boons to allies. So with a full party, you are giving out lots of boons, and consequently, receiving lots of heals. And of course, select traits that gives boons to allies, such as Empowering Might, as someone mentioned.

Note that however, and this is from my playing experience, the AH build is great for partying in dungeon and WvW, but not as spectacular when you solo PvE. The more people you apply boons, the better the heal. But the people must be in your party (except symbols such as the 3rd hit of #1 skill, where anyone within range will get the protection boon).

No Weapon Swapping Build

in Guardian

Posted by: Yramrag.3026

Yramrag.3026

Total noob question: How do you trigger the 3rd hit? Do you press 1 three times, or does it happen automatically?

The #1 skills are auto-skills, meaning when you have targeted a mob, pressing 1 once will automatically hitting the mob continuously with #1, until you use another skill, target another mob, or the mob dies. So yeah, press once, and the skill will cycle through first hit to 3rd hit.

However, I have experienced when the #1 skill stop hitting mid-way … probably because the mob moved away from range (which melee range) or you moved away from range. So I basically just spam #1 just in case.

No Weapon Swapping Build

Posted by: Yramrag.3026

Yramrag.3026

If it is PvE you are after, then having a Greatsword or Hammer would be sufficient. I don’t recall having the need to use ranged attack (scepter) for any PvE (except maybe in dungeons kiting boss). Greatsword will give good DPS while hammer provide some protection. So the AH build will probably meet your needs.

Deciding between Mesmer and Elementalist...

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Yramrag.3026

Yramrag.3026

Well, this being a RPG, i will just touch on the more important difference between Elementalist and Mesmer – how they kill mobs.

Mesmer – main mod of attack is to create clones of himself (up to 3), and summon another special clone to help the Mesmer kill mob. While the mobs are concentrating on fighting the clones, the Mesmer himself can continue to dish out damage on the mob. Also, Mesmer comes with a few class skill that utilise summoned clones for further DPS – he can choose to Shatter his clones for various effects – extra damage, conditions such as Confusion, etc.

This is basically how Mesmer kills. Plus there are some unique utility skills like create a Portal for party members, teleporting, etc.

Elementalist, on the other hand, kills mobs using their elemental spells mainly. These can be in the form of AOE spells such as Fireball, or single target spells. Each element (Fire, Water, Lightning, Earth) has different kind of attacks, and Elementalist will switch between them to maximize DPS and to suit the circumstances. This is your typical mage-type class.

In my opinion (I have played Elementalist to level 65, and Mesmer to level 61), Elementalist would probably suit you. Elementalist is a lot more demanding in situation awareness, requiring you to switch elements so that you can better survivie and kills better. It is IMO more complicated, on the edge, but ultimately satisfying. Mesmer has better survivability (due to clones), but might feel a bit boring once you figure out the best combo you like for DPS.

Culling?

Posted by: Yramrag.3026

Yramrag.3026

Notice how when you are in the crowded Lion’s Arch (for example, near the bank NPC), it seemed empty until you go closer and you see players start to materialized? That’s culling. This is ANet’s way to ensure you don’t get performance issue when a location is espcially crowded, allowing players to slowly materialze when you get closer.

Unfortunately culling applies to stealthed Thief, causing their stealth to “appear” longer (because they remain invisible during culling).

How to play AH build in PvE solo?

in Guardian

Posted by: Yramrag.3026

I am currently level 75 Guardian with 0/10/30/25, base on the popular AH build. I mainly use Greatsword and Hammer swapping for maximum dps. I only do PvE solo at the moment. Utilities are HTL and SY shouts with Signet of Resolve and Judgement.

I understand AH works very well when you proc boons on allies/party members, and basically that’s where your constant healing/regen comes from – the more allies and members, the better the heal. Unfortunately I am just playing solo pve most of the time, and I am not sensing that sustain healing effect from AH. Is this normal? Or Am I playing it wrong? Or should I not even considering AH build since I am mostly solo-ing?

Any advice would be appreciated!

There is no specific out-right party “tank” role in GW2 (or healer, DPS) – anyone class can try to tank, heal or DPS. It all depends on how you build your character.

However if you are talking about a “tanky” melee character with very good survivability, then Guardian is the choice for you. Although the class has less HP than Warrior, it can wear the heaviest armor and has lots of skill to mitigate damages. Plus the DPS is not bad.

Yramrag.3026

Any ideas or opinions to this?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Yramrag.3026

Yramrag.3026

Couple of things at the top of my head.

1. In GW2, you need to move around during combat, A LOT. Not just talking about moving away (or running away) from mobs, but utilizing dodge (default setup is double tap the directional key (A-W-D-S). Dodging allows you to negate the attack totally. Timed your dodge and you will survive well while dishing out damages on the mobs. You need to practice this. You can learn about dodging in http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Dodge

2. Learn to swap weapons. Swapping will allow you to keep your damage high as your other skill goes to cool-down. It also allows you to use more skills to adapt to different kind of mobs/environment.

3. Update your gears – make sure you at least use the weapon that you can afford to use at your level. They are usually cheap in Auction House (Trading Post)

4. Many of the classes’ better ability comes at higher level, when you have enough Skill Points to buy them, or when you can invest trait points to open up traits. This will make you more powerful and survive better. Level 18 is really low level to see the potential of any class. So don’t give up! There are good stuff waiting for you at higher level.

5. There are at least 3 areas that are suitable for level 1 to 20, with many hearts and dynamic events. Don’t like the grinding for this area and already ran out of heart quests? Try the other starter areas! Explore new lands! Make use of the Asura Gates in your capital city to use the Asura Gate to reach Lion’s Arch. From there you can go to any of the races’ capital city.

One word: Survivability.

I have leveled an 80 Thief and a L65 Elementalist. They are extremely squishy and I often have to think twice and strategize how to go about tackling a group of mobs. With my new level 45 Guardian, those fears are gone. I simple swish into the group with my GS, dishing out spin-o-death, then switch to hammer and smash them to pieces. I was a wonderful feeling, and highly therapeutic.

I do miss the running speed from my Thief and Elementalist though.

Seconded. If you keep thinking of GW2 as an MMORPG of the traditional sort, you’ll be easily frustrated with this game. If you think of this game as an action game instead, you’d already have improved just by switching your mindset.

This.

In GW2, you need to be constantly on the move, unlike many MMO out there. You can’t just stand still and dish out DPS. Move around, use dodge (a lot), use line of sight if there are barriers around. and while moving, constantly switch attunement to maximize you dps. I am playing a Secpter-Dagger elementalist and currently now level 45. I have survived a four-mob group that are 2 levels above me, with the help of summoning elementals to help tanking while I run around nuking.

Well, first off, this is a must read: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/players/OMG-If-you-only-knew-this-tips-for-new-players/first (it is stickied on top of this forum also)

Just remember when playing MMO, the other players are actually human at the other end of the terminal (OK, except bots. But that’s another story … ). Treat them as you would want to be treated. And don’t feel shy about chatting in zone (map) or asking questions. Even if you don’t get response straightaway, don’t feel discouraged. Just don’t spam the channels lol.

As for participating in raids and stuff – actually this game makes it easy to just jump in and participate in dynamic events with other players. Other than that, it is not difficult to level from 1 to 80 soloing all the way. Dungeon runs are really optional.

Lastly, join a guild.

With the elemental, I was able to survive and kill three mobs that are 3 level above me. I user Sceptre+Dagger
