Kitten almighty, I feel embarrassed for JQ (and FA a bit too) and I don’t even play on those servers. Why do people even consider T1/T2 a worthy goal in WvW? There is some serious self image problems going on if anyone considers it a worthy goal.

it’s not really a goal so much as a necessity

glicko is an accurate reflection of coverage, so if you’re over/undermatched then you end up basically doing nothing for a week. (i bet you didn’t know this.) This is less important outside of ranks 1-5 since you can’t control getting an awful, awful matchup outside of those ranks w/ new system.

Back in the day cusping between t2 and t3 was, well, it wasn’t really much fun to go back to t3, so it made the fights in t2 pretty fun since they had a sense of urgency.

If we were playing glicko for realsies then I think we probably would have/should have pushed mag a lot harder this week since mag doing an average performance is a much bigger threat to glicko than jq winning big

glicko is still an accurate representation of coverage and it’s accurate within 200 pts.

When FA/JQ/DB fought it was a much more even match, even though JQ still had huge coverage advantages. When FA/JQ/Mag fights, Mag is out of depth in coverage so JQ’s coverage advantage balloons

Unless there’s been recent transfers, almost every match where there’s a glicko difference between first and last of greater than 200, the match up is going to be awful. This isn’t hard to figure out from almost a years worth of data.

I mean, is winning really that big of a deal to most people? Because honestly, a server winning is 99% due to coverage, and that’s a very passive thing to hone… at least in open field or lower tiers, what you do as an individual actually matters.

Playing for PPT is pointless. The points will be there whether or not you do anything.

Come to T3-T5 (but not Maguuma). Ask [Agg], they seem to enjoy it. There are actually some quality guilds on servers like YB, Ebay, CD, SoS, etc. If you come down, you’ll get better fights, no queues, less pugs surrounding you and your enemies, and you get to actually make a difference.

Sometimes, [PYRO] is the only offensive force online, and when we take a couple keeps, that’s probably 1/4th of our total PPT for the night. It feels good to actually have something to do with our server’s PPT, and at the same time playing well in open field fights and having fun.

Think about it.

I heard the mag commander of blue BL ragequit last night. If this is true, outplayed.

I was commanding the map for the first 4 hours last night for JQ (SF’s commander) and was sort of wondering where Maguuma went.

You guys pushed pretty good at start, took our north west tower but no further. I’ll admit i was on my heels for the first bit of the night with a very good attack by FA. (nice duel attacks by RET and RAM most of the night) I almost cheered when for some reason Maguuma thought it was a better idea to go hit FA’s spawn tower.

Within a half hour of that i had bay again and FA had wiped maguuma off the map.

For the next three hours i didn’t see much of an organized fight from Maguuma. Their commander leaving the map would explain why.

All in all though, really good fights last night RAM and RET i look forward to seeing you guys again.

PYRO sorry i missed you guys, did you come on the map after 12:30 eastern? I’d have liked to give you guys a fight.

yeah it was weird

for some reason maguuma went straight for us. JQ made one or two really really passive pushes at hills, more or less just to prove we were there, then the monopoly game unfolded in pretty much the way it was going to unfold. It probably would have gone a lot worse for us if mag had made basically any other decision but hey whatevs.

Just curious, what happened to FA? Before week 25, the end-week scores between TC and FA was much closer than in more recent matchups. Did you guys lose transfers or something?

Nothing. We get about the same amount of points we usually do. There’s no third server and we’re out-covered. You’ll notice that in week 22 we actually out-performed our regular average against you despite the fact that the margin was greater than in previous matchups.

This patch pretty much put together a lot of things that at least I had yearned for since release.

This is a better WvW patch than the WvW patch. World ranks? Ok, whatever. That’s cool I guess. No culling? Eh, that’s cool too— now if you could give us a way to cut down the graphical pollution.

However, nothing in the prior WvW patches holds a candle to the improvements and love WvW got in this patch. New PvE skins with an easy path to obtain in WvW, tradeable blueprints, and consequently new ways to make money in WvW.

Add to that the fact that the achievement rewards are a significant boon now that there are so many WvW dailies. This is no joke, the best patch since release for WvW.

I feel like the way WvW interfaced with the temporary content in this patch was the best iteration of that so far. Is anyone else with me on that?

ZN’s version of bag farming is pretty neat since I usually get a lot of stuff. ZN was not a good fit for FA, and there’s nothing wrong with that, but it’s worth explaining why they weren’t a good fit.

First off, ZN didn’t have very much experience fighting in the open field back then, so militia weren’t willing to follow them very much. Second, ZN cared a lot about PPT, but they had to learn the hard way that PPT is a product of coverage until you hit a threshold of coverage like in t1, where they came from in the first place. Third, they wanted us to treat them as if they had a certain reputation that, frankly, we were (and remain) unfamiliar with.

New thread, as the prior one was made by someone who has parted ways with the server.

I regret to inform each of you that Fort Aspenwood has completely and utterly failed to implode. Although the wonderful man who generated our last thread has left the server, Fort Aspenwood remains.

Therefore, as God Emperor and Consumer Relationship Manager as well as Chief Evangelist for Fort Aspenwood, I have been asked to invite each of you to frolic and bask in the glorious halo of Fort Aspenwood.

My consumer relations research department has informed me that people who watch significant amounts of Japanese Animation between the ages of 16 and 28 tend to have the highest coverage per player, therefore, we have carefully crafted this video to attract this target demographic.

The consumer relations research department has also informed me that this is the part of the post where I inform you of the generic reasons to transfer to Fort Aspenwood that actually apply to every server looking for transfers. Great queues, great community, great generic quality statement here- there, the consumer relations department is happy.

You might reasonably ask yourself, why, Zoel, why should I or my guild transfer to Fort Aspenwood?

1. Have you ever wanted to date the goth girl on a syndicated american television show about high school because you sympathized with how she is too cool to have friends? We have no less than seventeen polls conducted by independent polling corporations that indicate we are more like that goth girl you wanted to date than 8 of the 9 major leading brands of toothpaste.

2. Seismologists have failed to indicate via official statement— yet with a wink and a nudge (and a few beers) were eager to mention (strictly off the record, of course) that we’re more stable than an overactive volcano, which is a pretty low bar when it comes to the numerous private islands I own, but happens to make us the most stable server in Guild Wars 2.

3. After a recent congressional hearing we are obligated to make the following statement: Fort Aspenwood has little to no desire to enslave you to the good of the server. A wise man once told me: “Stuff gets taken, stuff gets lost.” I have since trademarked that sentence and you better believe I have a team of lawyers who are enslaved to the good of me suing the pants off of you if you use it. Additionally I am told by our legal council to state that we have no war council and as such pose no significant threat to the United Nations or nearly any sovereign nation. The extent of our control on one another is to make disapproving posts that nobody else reads; just like 85% of the employee handbook infraction notices human resources places on my desk. Our loose reset assignments are first come first serve because no business has succeeded issuing participation ribbons; and exist solely and completely to avoid over-queuing one borderland- which my staff assured me is important.

4. One person- either a hobo or Albert Einstein just told me that we have the best coverage to glicko ratio in the game. I want to be clear that this does not mean we have low coverage. Also allow me to make this bold yet unqualified assertion: Glicko is an accurate representation of coverage within 200-300 points. Accordingly, we have somewhere between the 5th and 8th best coverage in North America. Consequently, we likely have the highest coverage of any server you could transfer to without waiting for it to cease being “Full.”

5. Once again due to prior congressional hearings we are further obligated to inform interested candidates of the following: we are basically the evil server or something. Yeah, we allegedly kill people in the JP for fun. We also allegedly kill yak parades because they drop bags. We even more allegedly take keeps just because they looked at us the wrong way (which happens constantly.) The prosecution in our pending court cases have also suggested the ridiculous idea that we privately make fun of our opponents for being poorly geared and/or unskilled. These are the allegations levied against us, but they have yet to be fully proven in a court of law among a jury of our peers.

6. As a corollary to #5, we are awesome.

This has nothing to do with wvw participation. During NA prime time our servers are fairly even. Just saying you have a huge group mentality. The big elephant in this room is you have more SEA/Oceanic coverage which is where your “greater WvW participation” occurs, I’d say compared to DB we are holding up much better against it(but I hate to even mention that because it turns into a cesspool of hate/crying so that is as far as I’ll go with that).

Not to disrespect the FA that do run by themselves and in small groups. I’d just love to run into more of you guys. Since this match-up is going to FA, barring some miracle, it would be great to run into more 1v1 or 2v1’s from FA.

We’re just as baffled by this on Mag as you all are I think. The squishiness of FA zergs is… phenomenal.

The main issue is that as you get higher in tiers it works amazingly well because you’re up against servers with the same weakness.

If there’s nothing to fight people are only going to stay in WvW for so long. Eventually you’ll find a time several times throughout the day where FA is sitting at +500 but we’re not actually there.

1) Don’t talk bad about math. Though I concdede that I am a bit odd for doing math in my free time for fun, I contend that everybody likes math; just those who think they don’t just haven’t realized it yet.

2) What would be less fun: total certainty or a lot of uncertainty? A very interesting question, since you claim that total certainty is the only thing that is not un-fun. Unless, of course, you mean some artifacts associated with the implementation of a pseudo-RNG in this game are un-fun (which you should say instead—words mean things after all).

If you’re good at math tell me what numbers you want to make analysis of whether glicko was accurate or not and i’ll pull them from millenium and put them in excel for you.

you guys are both good you just don’t have any coverage, and glicko and points measure coverage. You don’t lose fights any more often than a T2 or T1 server.

clarification: they measure coverage first and skill second. It’s accurate within 200 points.

The concept of tiers has little meaning at this point and you should try to stop thinking of matchups in those terms. Servers are matched up by proximity of rating, not proximity of “tier”. If the tiers have ratings that are within the range of the random adjustment, they can end up fighting each other. This is going to result in blowouts, no doubt about it. However, we are not going to make changes to this after just 2 weeks of the system. There are things we can do. We will almost certainly end up adjusting the total added to each server rating to group the matchups a little more closely. First however, we need to let the ratings adjust by having more varied matchups like these. If you look at EU, which is using the exact same system, you can see matchups with numerous surprising results. The same will likely be true by the end of the NA matchup.

TL;DR: We are going to wait at least a couple more weeks before changing any of the math behind the new system, but it is very likely we’ll decrease the size of the variation at some point.

Do you really need to wait for new data? You have months and months and months of matchups where people changed tiers and went into new matchups. I could try to do the math and research for you but a short glance at match histories, not disproven by current numbers, suggests glicko has been accurate within 200 points for quite some time.

We didn’t wholesale reset ratings the last time there were changes, why do it now?

And even so, why do we need week long matchups to test this? You could just as easily reset ratings to 0 and do day long matchups with much less pain and boredom for everyone.

Maguuma is a good server with good guilds, they just need coverage. You wont be bored.

Personally, I don’t mind BT and VK leaving because it allowed me to become God Emperor of Fort Aspenwood. I think the vast majority of us are still on good terms with the people who left, and most of VK actually came back in different forms because the grass was not in fact greener.

We will soon start a new recruitment thread in order to spare Malose of any random pms. (In fact, if this thread could get a courtesy lock, that would be great.) Glicko doesn’t match skill. It’s never measured that and any notion that it did is comical.

Glicko matches coverage. kitten did amazing in the Maguuma/FA/EB matchup, but FA has more coverage so, yeah, FA is going to win.

Glicko is accurate within 200 points. Or rather, it was accurate within 200 points.

This also tiered-out the top 9 servers. If you are in the top 9 servers, you have no where higher to go. You’re done. You can be matched against #1. There is utterly no point in worrying about your glicko rating, because it doesn’t prevent you from playing harder opponents anymore.

You’d never tell from the forums but I’ve found that FA and TC to a slightly lesser degree, have conducted themselves well on the field, with bowing after good fights and such.

That being said, I wish you two would mix it up a little. I know we look like PPT hanging low on the vine, but I thought it was a little cheap that FA BL was pure green while Blue was upgrading keeps on our map.

Of course we would have never flipped TC’s garrison yesterday if you were so I guess you can carry on with your Plan A.

WvW chests aren’t spectacular and the speed of ranking is too fast to get excited about them even as a chance to get something.

If they only dropped rares (and no piece of gear when it would be green) they would be infinitely more exciting. Other than that the drop rate is basically fine per chest, although I think they should be rarer. Maybe once per two levels. But seriously no coal please.
