There is actually quite often blob fights in EotM. You would know if you actually played it a bit…..

Perhaps? I’ve found that actively pursuing fights in EoTM results in a lot of toxic hostility.

I’m not sure why kills even have reduced WXP anymore; since the mechanic was introduced, every other form of WXP distribution has been increased and new ones added, save for that.

There has also been the introduction of WvW traits 230 deep that are effectively mandatory (On par with the new Guardian Grandmaster trait force of will!), should newer players be punished for playing against a server with a lower success rate of taking objectives? [Thus depriving them of the opportunity to take objectives.]

You’ve also significantly increased the number of WvW gold sinks in this release with both gems to bank usage and the trick— has consideration been given to the cost of upgrades, bank use, etc. in light of these changes?

(Aside, I’ve seen win trading happen with objectives, but NEVER with regular WvW kills, unless you count letting the enemy res after a GvG, in which case the amount of time between rounds— based mostly on the warrior banner cooldown— greatly exceeds the threshold. I think you’re preventing behavior that does not occur.)

If the goal is to prevent spawn camping, why have we seen an increase in strength of snow-ball traits? Applied Fortitude was once removed on down, but no longer is. Do you think consideration could be given to modifying balance instead of rewards in order to make spawn camping less of a problem?

Will we see additional nerfs in the future to prevent tower trading now that a stronger server has an incentive to catch-and-release on spawn towers?

Yeah, I hope you guys are enjoying the new k-train meta.

This COULD be a viable change if cap circles were all the size of vale… but they aren’t. It COULD be viable if circle didn’t cap so fast… but they do.

The circles are just too small. Range has no real way to affect the fight because you need melee to contest, but they’ll just die and rally anyone you get down with ranged. You need to have an entire melee stack ready to go before you push in, but the circle caps too quickly for you to be more than 3 or 4 seconds away.

I mean, you COULD contest and defend, but attackers have such an enormous advantage now.

It is a good change for those who dislike strategy.

It’s not ‘strategy’ if the tactic is simply ‘drop 5 superior rams’. That’s doing the same monkey thing over and over again. That’s rote, not strategy.

Now for attackers it’s just “are you in the circle first? Cool. Can you manage to put your damage in that tiny cap circle? Awesome you win.”

Myself and a couple of guys from my guild prevented the cap of EB keep for over 2h. Just us even, no other players from our side, so they focused us hard. Eventually the map blob was forced to leave. If that isn’t a significant period of time than I don’t know. It was stupidly OP.

It’s possible that the ‘blob’ wasn’t actually a significant number of people intended to take a keep. It’s also possible that they weren’t very good. Either way that’s pretty anecdotal.

I think this basically only got put in because people complained that it was imbalanced, but I don’t think there’s a rationale for why it is imbalanced. Currently if someone is already in the lord room, the circle just caps way too fast for you to do anything other than onesy-twosey in and get wiped. You might as well just not respond unless someone gets siege disabled from the get go, at which point they might as well just leave anyway without you showing up.

I think it’s really funny that players are defending this tactic saying their small group of Spartans were holding out against the Persian Empire by chaining Battle Standards. Reviving the Lord does not let you win; it just wastes everyone’s time. Every fight should resolve themselves eventually. Delaying the enemy until they get bored is not fighting.

Siege disabler trap

I’m really torn on this.

On the one hand it’s imbalanced, but on the other hand using the trick is pretty satisfying.

They removed the banner ability (which I really, really don’t agree with) to make up for this, but it seems like the net result is fewer fights. Either someone goes ahead and takes a structure with no response because they got in, or they never get in because you have disabler.

As an aside, overgrown grub (and oakheart) wouldn’t be so bad if it weren’t out of line with the other champions and events in WvW, specifically hylek champion (which can be killed before the event ends b/c of randos easily) and the harpy champion in EB. Compare also to like, veteran worm outside bay. At that point they would just be regularly done events that the WvW community as a whole wouldn’t be annoyed by someone wanting to do.

As it stands doing overgrown grub will generate an orange sword notification, which in turn will likely result in you not finishing the grub.

Hey guys, I wanted to pop in and make a few points about the siege disabler.

  • This is a thrown projectile, and as such, can be countered by abilities that block or reflect projectiles (Shield of Absorption, Swirling Winds, etc)
  • It has a ~5silver, 10 supply and 15 badge cost. This cost coupled with the above point, will likely limit the amount that these items are used to important tactical plays.
  • Siege is not permanently disabled, the disabler is just meant to open up a window of opportunity. Players may choose to spread their siege out more to be less vulnerable to this tactic.
  • As you are probably aware, we are adding Golem Mastery in the same update. This provides a new, viable option for countering a golem rush.
  • The traps we’ve added in the past, have seen low use. So we intentionally created this trick to be a bit on the stronger side. However, it’s still hard to say exactly how it will play out in the live game, but if it ends up hurting gameplay more than helping it we are open to adjusting it in the future.

I’m sure you mean well, but your reasoning is rather awkward.

The idea of blocking siege projectiles with swirling winds is something that was removed a rather long time ago presumably because it isn’t fun and chained elementalists to siege. It was bad enough when it was re-added to catapults. Why is it being added in yet another form now?

Does the trick require line of sight? If not, how is it expected for players to counter the trick when placed behind the gate? The only way I can figure is by spamming the ability on the gate; this is only feasible with golems since elementalists don’t have the health pool to sit on the gate.

Golems have an intrinsic projectile-absorbing shield bubble at 1000 range as their third ability. Are you quite sure this is an effective counter to 10+ 20+ 30+ 40+ etc. golem rushes? It sounds more like this trick + golem mastery is making golems the end all of gate attacks.

Traps aren’t used often because most tiers are underpopulated; when you leave a map, the trap pops, so more often than not you’re just throwing down a trap for no reason if you have to move between maps. Even then, the traps are weaker forms of other siege abilities that already exist with less recurrent cost. Supply Gas is flatly better than the supply trap.

They are also limited to one per player per map, and other players can’t use supply on them— since a significant number of players are free riders (it’s not profitable to spend money on traps), this also significantly diminishes the number of times the trap is used.

The amount of time that you need to tear down a ram with free-casting might be significantly less than you think it is. If we’re allowed to graveyard rush rams via waypoint, then it should only take 4-5 traps to clear any rams on a waypointed keep. Even then, the 45 seconds is an eternity when chained together.

Three or four players can inhibit rams for at least 2 minutes- this is long enough for an omniblob to reach the objective from almost any point on the borderlands and eb maps.

A 1600 supply keep can throw these down for two hours; even in that extreme case that should never happen in reality (players will not sit on rams for two hours, and it will not take two hours to get defenders to the rams) the cost is not prohibitive.

The tools to disable rams are already immensely powerful; they are only ineffective when there are no players to defend. Supply gas, inner cannons to outer gates, death from above, and trebuchet damage require ram rushes to be very fast already; why is it necessary to add yet another defense to the already formidable kitten nal against rams?

How will you determine if this is overpowered? Rams are already exceedingly weak as a result, and mostly limited to situations where you can spam them before being scouted— what do you see as their place in the overall WvW game?

Would the commander system be functional enough with more markers, guild only tags, less suppression, better supplyinfo, and possibly additional marker shapes?

Yeah. That or just extra target markers. I’m not entirely sure the commander system needs a million bells and whistles. I’m weary of a system doing too much because I don’t want to see every task micromanaged by the commander. I just want to see enough that delegation is more feasible and visible.

So you’re admitting that your server is conceding/collapsing in Silver League?

But no, we’ve been one of the most stable servers and getting out-coveraged in tier 2 for months and fighting more T1s than your SBI 2.0 Bandwagon. What makes you think it’ll happen when we go to the league where we should belong?

I didn’t admit to anything. SBI is a strong server and people that fail to see it and ASSUME we are falling is false.

And to answer your question, I will ask a question. Compare week 1 to week 7. How come you guys are struggling to destroy us like you did in week 1?

SBI will have a mass server exodus within the next 6 months. Just look at whaf happened to DB and Kain. You guys arent special little snowflakes. Also, its because we have DB in the matchup, who actually contest stuff unlike ioj who had a mass exodus prior to the leagues. (Thank Brother Alaric, MVP of FA season 1! Basically destroyed a server by himself)

Right, a doomsayer, never been on SBI but can predict the future for us. Our community is very bonded and i highly doubt that would happen any time soon. Although, 6 months is a lot of time so anything can happen to any server. It always depends on x guild(s) looking for a change.

Although FA has been stable in T2/3, you guys woudn’t be there if it wasn’t because of IoJ guilds leaving ans joining your server.

We were in T3 forever before IOJ joined us, although it’s unlikely we would have gotten into T2 without them.

out of the SBI guilds I’ve faced since this matchup started I’d have to say [DR] is the most impressive. Good cohesion, good spot picking, pays attention to cooldowns, and most importantly does things for a reason.

Always fun fighting you, RET. Keep ’em coming FA. Filled my 140 bag slots so many times last night.

So much fun to harass Bay for so long. Hope we didn’t frustrate you too much last night. :P Also, ninja supply traps are the new meta.

Collaborative Development: Commander System

I’m not even remotely ashamed of saying this: Commander tags are a customization opportunity that I would be willing to throw down a lot of money for if monetized. Given that a skin for a tag that could be seen by anyone on a map, they would be a hugely significant graphical cosmetic. I would easily value it more than an armor skin and be willing to pay more than an armor skin for one.

If you switched commander into a trait mastery, a skin of this sort for legacy commanders would be a pretty gosh darn good refund per tag.

I see a lot of ideas here that seem pretty complicated. They’re good but I think a simpler solution is out there.

I think the easiest system is one that players are already familiar with, specifically, chat codes. Interacting with a chat code linked to someone’s squad could be used to join it, and this simple mechanic makes a lot of organization possible, and also removes the need for stuff like guild based tags.

Simply put, give commanders the option to show their tags to everyone, or only people in their squad. Then make squad join be based off of seeing and clicking a chatcode. Let commanders be in other squads simultaneously. You can also see the tags of commanders you’re following.

1. Give the commander access to a linkable chat code, anyone who gets the link can join the squad. e.g., [Join Squad: Commander John Doe]

2. Allow players to be in more than one squad. (I realize that this could be a fundamental rewrite issue right here.)

3. Only allow commanders and commanders that they are following to link their squad code.

4. Give players 2 squad view options: 1. Show all visible commanders . 2. Show only commander groups I am following. (Default 1, switches to 2 if you join a squad, can just be set back afterward if you want.)

5. Give commanders 4 squad show options: 1. Show my tag to everyone. 2. Show my tag to people in my squad, and people following them. 3. Show my tag only to people in my squad. 4. Don’t show my tag to anyone, even if I lead a squad. (Default 1, switches to the option of a commander you follow.)

6. If a commander is following another squad, anyone who follows him will also see the squad he is following.

From the end users perspective, this is easy. You click on a chat code. Boom. Done. Finished. Doesn’t need any explanation at all for someone who can read a chat code. No complicated steps required.

From the commander’s perspective, it’s a little more complicated, but very customizable. Main commanders could give out the code to everyone, and then select subcommanders that everyone could see, or for a less messy view, the commander could give out his code only to the subcommanders, who would be the primary tags joined on; this would hide breakoff groups from one another, but not the main group. It would also discourage players from running in one huge ball against the commander’s wishes.

This is insanely easy for anyone to use or set up, makes spying more difficult if you really want it to be, reduces griefing, and sets up the ability to use subcommanders (who could just have a different looking tag) with a minimum of hassle.

Fantastic weekend of fighting. Two best servers in the league battling in the final week, shame it doesn’t have an effect on the final winner. Great fights, FA and DB.

Not entirely true, league placings are pretty much decided but Coverage Wars placings are still up for grabs. It’s looking like 1. FA 2. SBI 3. YB though.

Have you been taking crazy pills when you do your math?

YB is second guaranteed, and FA is first guaranteed. SBI is playing hard for a third place that they will get regardless of how this week finishes.

Novus, you’re going to keep running into the same problems over and over again that made you come back to FA in the first place. FA has it’s share of problems, but those problems are marginally less detrimental to you than the problems you’re going to face anywhere else.

If you’re done with pugmanding you could just do the thing that all the other people do who want to command militia and… just don’t? I’m pretty sure we can carry the load.

That said TC would hate you for the first week or so then they’d forget that they hate you and think you’re the best thing since sliced bread.

Fun fights on FA BL tonight. Holy crap RET you guys were rolling deep. I wish we could have engaged you by ourselves more but you guys had a ton, we had to resort to the kind of tactics employed at NW ruins (great fight their btw, was like playing kitten zombies). Good job and good fights out there hopefully we can GvG later in the week.

Rewarding Scouting and Yak Kills

I think it’s been hard to figure out a way to reward these two activities because we’ve grown accustomed to thinking of the event system as the primary mechanism to reward players. The event system isn’t very good for this because it doesn’t reward effort so much as happenstance. (You happen to sit in a keep, you happen to be around a dolyak.)

These activities could be more equitably rewarded with seigerazer like buffs. For example, you get 0.5% magic find when killing an enemy near a yak, with some CD, or 1% for every minute standing at an objective, to be whittled down as you kill enemies. This has the advantage of rewarding players for doing these tasks but not giving out the reward until something is actually done to earn it.

It would also incline players who intend to spend more time in WvW to do the more tedious tasks, since there would be more reward for someone staying in a map for a long time to do these objectives rather than someone who just wants to get in and play for 15-30m.

The perverse nature of this game is that to have smaller fights you need more people, sorry. :/

The alternative to zerging is for those extra 40 people to stare at you or otherwise sit in an objective you don’t have the people to attack.

In other unexciting news, [RET] has had a leadership shuffle. I’ve stepped down as leader of the guild so FA will surely collapse in the next five to ten minutes owing to my massive sense of self-importance. De Sade and Stawker are current guild leaders and contacts for GvG. Tsorin is no longer GvG contact. I plan to re-assert dictatorial control of [RET] in the first or second quarter of 2014.

The vast, vast majority of players you kill in wvw play for less than 45 minutes every day, regardless of what server you’re playing on. This creates the illusion that you are much better than your opponents and convinces everyone who plays halfway consistently that their opponents must be zerging trash piles. The alternative is that everyone who posts on these forums is lying and there are entire servers full of hardcore WvW players with almost no WvW kills.

I think the matchups might benefit from being scored twice in one match. That is, once at the end of the weekend, and again at the end of the week. Whether for leagues, or for glicko.

Generally, the most hype in a match is in the first 48 hours or so, so it makes sense to place an evaluation on that first 48 hours. The scores wouldn’t be reset, but you’d have a second evaluation based on how well each server did for the week.

So you’d have two results per matchup, one from the weekend, one from the week as a whole.

The weekend score would be less affected (though not immune) by nightcapping, since coverage windows are generally larger on the weekend, and you’d have a more meaningful chance at some sort of upset in the first calculation.

Disclaimer: I am on a server that would benefit from this change.

Apparently many have failed to realize that a lot of people on FA sandbagged the final two weeks of pre-season and “let” Mag take the final week to get out of Gold league and all the 100 man blob and skill lag crapola….

If this is FA sandbagging against tryhard Mag (http://mos.millenium.org/servers/view/38/113), I really don’t want to immagine what they can pull off when they’re poopsocking it!

Given that only one of our guilds decided to book it for gold league, I suspect that we are actually the least gold league reject out of any server in silver league.

Don’t blame us for the fair weathers of every other server in silver.

The schedule is kind of baffling. If coverage changes significantly between now and week 7, there’s probably a 2 way tie for 1st.
