Yes many do not read the forums but I doubt those from FA that were with us did not yell and cry and scream for everyone to hold fire…which was not done. While it is understood that not all are responsible for the actions of few, it is an unfortunate fact they are still on the same team as the rest of Fort Aspenwood, and the bitter taste in my mouth will only be washed out with blood.

you wanted a rivalry and a mortal enemy or whatever and you got one. we double teamed you with kaineng because that’s what the character would do. j/k, we double teamed you initially because we wanted a GvG that TC was in the way of. Then it was just kinda fun until our respective guilds felt like this was getting long in the tooth.

I think rise really got the better of it and we won b/c we had a # advantage, but it’s hard to tell from the video. I made the call for it but I sort of stayed off so that not too many militia would come.

when ioj and cd did it there was a substantial difference in that the thread wasn’t spammed with WE’RE DOING THIS B/C WE DON’T LIKE YOU and guild tags that said good luck in tier 4 fa

i.e. it was b/c we were percieved as the weaker server, as opposed to when you guys made us bite and scratch to say in t3, which was fun i guess.

As much as I’m excited to see new items for badges, i’m a little concerned about the appearance options.

Will there be ways of getting the identical skins outside of WvW? It would be unfortunate to have an influx of people in WvW who don’t want to be playing WvW and taking up spots from those who do while spamming the jump puzzles

we had really great fights against warmachine and tysm last night, and I look forward to more of them throughout the week. This particular T2 matchup is the most fun most of us have had in a long, long time, and I think we’re all learning a lot by going up against your compositions.

You can say it’s futile all you want; meanwhile AoN is going to do what you aren’t interested in figuring out. You can tell from the excitement in our voices that contesting AoN was a big deal.

I play primarly in a very small guild in NA prime on servers that have a weak NA prime time slot. I also maintain a 12/1 K/D ratio which is respectable even if it isn’t particularly remarkable. So I am decent or better, I play in some of the tougher time slots and I am in the majority that believes significant numbers own pretty much anything.

I have been run over by RET’s large roaming packs somewhat frequently and I have fought AoN. Once a server like FA hits prime time and the opposing server cannot even field 6 players in EB, there is VERY little a small squad can do. They might take an objective or even repulse a superior force but that just brings a bigger zerg than the one that came before it.

RET was so bored last night they built siege in front of DB’s EB jump point at 9:30pm EST:

Virtually no amount of skill can have a player consistently winning (and by winning I mean killing) against a significant number disadvantage unless they are some kind of super phenom player that I have never seen or heard of aside from forum warrior posts.

You have had a sheltered WvW existence then.

Why would you say that?

I have played almost universally on servers that have a low population during my normal playing time (NS, CD, DB). Sheltered… no. Do I know what it means to get run over by zergs and large packs? Yep and so do most players which is why they generally don’t like to play during low pop vs high pop hours.

He is telling you this because he is part of one of the best WvW guilds in the world that consistently wins (or at least avoids a wipe) against a significant number disadvantage. If they released more videos, people might put them above red guard.

I put together an unedited video of RET mostly fighting AoN where RET and FA take ogrewatch thanks to on point calls by Brother Alaric, but does not wipe AoN.

You’ve taken a few paragraphs and combined them into one inaccurate sentence. FA, as a server, believes in building inter-guild ties and server-wide strategies – team building.

Also, we were the lucky recipients of a lot of very skilled players from IoJ. They brought a lot of great ideas to our community on FA and we welcomed them with open arms.

Blix, go ahead and ask any of our former IoJ members if they’ve liked FA since they joined. Or, conversely, go ahead and ask what team building things we like to do as a server. However, please don’t just troll our thread with irrelevant nonsense.

I would like stomping the other servers in the tier for 3 week stretches, too. I just find it laughable that what was once a middling tier 3 server now has this giant ego because they got the bulk of another server to transfer to it. To act like ‘team building’ has any impact on WvW is silly, it’s all about time zone coverage, which is why this thread exists in the first place. By asking more people to transfer to you so you can move up a tier you have acknowledged the futility of whatever you’re doing over on FJ.

But by all means, feel free to pretend you’re an elite squad of pro-gamers with a top tier practice schedule. Enjoy tier 2.

You’re not the first to do this, you’re just red guard copy cats.

I’m willing to bet that just because you dropped that name, you have watched videos and read things to make yourself a better player.

I’m willing to bet you have used some of the information others who play this game have posted online to tune your build and improve your game.

So, why would you debase yourself in an attempt to degrade your opponents for using … tactics? If they’re as you say, Red Guard copycats, why aren’t you countering their ‘highly predictable’ tactics with some brilliant maneuvers of your own?

To summarize, I don’t think it’s right to suggest that learning from others is a bad thing.

I probably read the same forums that guild does. Wow, here we both are on the same forums. I never called BT unskilled, I did call them copy cats and they are. I have played against them several times now. In the past match up’s they played allmost nothing but thiefs, they ran a pack of them who would sit in camps and insta gank. This was the OPed tactic of that time in the game, or so it was believed. Now there is a better tactic that has been found, by another guild, and they’re doing that.

Now one of that guild called everyone other then the few guilds he wants to jump ship to his server in this match, “unskilled zerg”. “Unskilled zerg” coming from a copy cat, irony. A few of them are now kitten because I have pointed that fact out.

If they dont want people questioning thier posts, then I would say stop posting like they are doing something that hasn’t already been done, by someone else and use a tactic that Anet hasn’t already acknowledged as being an issue that will be nerfed in the upcoming patch.

1. How dare you say that about stephano, whose sponsor kindly hosts the score tracker.

2. WvW is about comps, working as a group, and using builds that compliment a group rather than a 1v1 setup. If this isn’t your thing, you might want to reconsider your time investment in WvW.

3. Talk to AoN for ideas about how to deal with groups larger than your own. They’re on your server and stuff, and they might be the best WvW guild in the world at picking the right engagements.

I’ve noticed that. When I see the [OG] tag in a larger ball I tend to say to myself “Oh, so this must be everyone they have.” But that implies a higher level of intent than is usually there; I think you do have one or two members who just tend to roll with a ball from the getgo every so often.

In reality, OG has become infamous to the point where our mere presence on a battlefield contributes to our server hugely. Even a single OG tag is enough to make an entire zerg stop what it is doing and chase in the opposite direction. Just by playing the way we play, we can make ourselves cancel out 5-6x our numbers easily. Also, we always kill more than we lose, even if it’s not as many as we’d like, meaning we’re taking more people out of the fight than our own number.

You overestimate the amount of times that we see OG tags. Yes, we do run after you, and you can be certain that there’ll be a few of us that break off the zerg to chase down one of you, but you also have to realize that we have multiple times your population as well, so in the end you’re not doing much.

And to be honest. I don’t typically see this from Dragonbrand, I typically only see it from FA. Furthermore, I’d like to point out that while you may be helping (you overestimate your contribution, but yes you do contribute) in the field, you are hurting your server by forum warrior’ing and provoking the wrath of the FA zerg.

Have you noticed that you’ve been focused down much more often by us than Dragonbrand has? Even though dragonbrand was outmanned and you weren’t?

So while none of us care about the score (except that we would greatly prefer to lose and drop to t4), you better believe we do more to help our server than a lot of you who actually do care.

Believe it or not, in lower tiers our groups get more accomplished when it isnt always 5v30.

Being in a zerg ball of players doesnt always mean your getting more done. If anything I see zergs wipe and its an enormous setback, more so than organizing a 5man group together again. While we may not capture SM on the daily we make sure we hold at least 15 points in supply camps while we are on the BL. Thats contributing to the team is it not? A consist 15tick the whole time we are there. Even if we never own any of the castles around the supply camps, mag zergs get an easy supply run when needed.

We do have a fun time picking off the slower members of RET zerg Untill you guys realize just how many we are killing, do a 180 and eat us.

Well that is what you’re supposed to be doing as a roaming group so more power to you.

Roamers do generally contribute; the point contribution is minimal next to the scouting information they provide to the battlefield at large and killing stragglers en route to reconnect with a larger force.

The fact is, you do need a significantly sized group in order to take keeps and smc, or to defend keeps and smc. That’s regardless of whether or not it’s one organized guild or an entire server sharing a teamspeak. However, many people disregard the fact that having the entire server on one circle means you have nobody anywhere else.

FA has been kind of bad about this lately, which is mostly a by-product of our not having been able to form such a zerg previous to six weeks or so ago, whether in terms of communication, willingness of people in the zone to participate, or organized guilds.

Mag is in a great position to exploit this weakness, but so far I haven’t seen it. OG should be a key player in that strategy. For better or worse, I doubt many guilds have nearly as many people who would be interested in that sort of role.

If my server wouldn’t flog me to death I would probably attempt to convince OG transfer through subsidization just so we could have dedicated roamers; most people who would be good at that would rather spvp.

This matchup has officially run it’s course and has become just plain boring now. I don’t know if I can take another week of this matchup it’s just the same thing every day

- 12AM-5 AM EST FA makes the maps green
- 6AM-12PM EST DB makes the maps blue
- 1PM-7PM EST Mag takes back there stuff and pushes both servers and for a while the battle is even.
- 8-11 PM EST FA wakes up and starts taking the majority of the map while Mag goes to bed and DB starts to trail off.

It’s like clockwork now. Something needs to change.

Ya, it’s a pretty lame tier. My only hope for the future of wvw here is that eventually FA and DB get tired of being zerg servers and start actually doing roaming pvp and maybe eventually learn how to compete.

I felt bad in the morning because I was basically like, ok, well magumma isn’t on so i think we have to take their towers while they try to get their keep back

This is a beta guide that I’ve been working on. I haven’t gotten sufficient chances to use the strat and tweak it, but feel free to comment on it, tell me I’m full of BS, etc.
[RET] recently ran up against a guild in Tier 2, which used culling as an offensive tool to great effect. After bashing our heads against them for a bit, I began to determine how they were using the culling system to their advantage. The new culling system is, frankly, awful, and I release this guide in order to put players on the same playing field, and in hopes that this guide will eventually become useless due to culling changes.

Why it works
Culling is now proximity based. Previously, characters who were rendered would remain rendered unless they left the field of vision for a specific gameplay reason, such as stealth or natural distance (about 3000). However, the proximity of culling (specifically, the distance at which you are guaranteed to un-cull an enemy) is now roughly 1600 range. By roughly moving in and out of this range, you can effectively remain near invisible until making an attack. Of course, the downside to this fact is that you have issues rendering the enemy as well. In theory this is a perfectly balanced state of affairs, if and only if everyone understands the mechanic.

Note
Culling is peculiar in that if no one is in your immediate proximity (INCLUDING ALLIES), distant objects will not be culled regardless of number.

The basic method
You use a canary, or blood god sacrifice, in order to determine where to drop an AoE. The canary’s job is to act as a forward scout who renders the enemy. Preferably the canary should have a commander tag. when attacking, the Canary suicides into the enemy line, and gives the order for a massive aoe attack on their corpse, which is guestimateable through the minimap. As mentioned above, the main force should remain roughly 1600 range away from the canary in order to avoid an enemy attack. We’ve recorded some video of this strategy as proof of concept. * (Video pending. it’s hard to get a good video because, well, culling utterly ruins fraps sometimes.)

Details
Your canary is best a mesmer, thief, or guardian, or otherwise excellent at 1v1 fights with great mobility. Mesmer’s have an obvious advantage in this, but given the mobility of most pbaoe, a mesmer portal isn’t a must have. It wont make a huge difference, but your canary should have a baller as hell computer. There’s nothing to stop you from using more than one canary. If you have individuals who suck at aoe and don’t have important support roles, they might as well hang out with the canary; most fights are over in five seconds and are performed with no ability to single target.

Techniques
If your main force can see someone, you’re far too close (unless you’re attacking). This opens you up for an attack more than it enables you to perform an attack. The mobile force will generally render the other side first. The only situation in which your main force should begin rendering the enemy is when you are performing an attack.

Mobile pbaoe is mandatory. Lightning flash/churn is currently the most popular form of this, but there are equally effective methods such as guardian judge’s intervention + spin to win. To VERY limited effect, canaries can use 1500 range to poke at an enemy force.

I have an unbelievable amount of footage from this weekend’s brawls.

This video is KnT/BG vs. RET/FA in our attack on BG-held Bay in the TC BL (So closer to our spawn). We knew that we’d have to defeat KnT to take the keep—and every time we did we had to push our advantage HARD to get those walls down before they could rally to defend it. Nevertheless, we got 3 engagements over the course of the siege.

I included, also, all the footage of KnT wiping us as well to keep it as unbiased as possible (as close to a battle-report as I could manage). But keep in mind that we fought KnT half a dozen times after-the-fact with mixed success.

GREAT fights, and I hope nobody misconstrues this as a troll. I have nothing but the utmost respect for KnT after these many engagements.

This video also demonstrates some particularly bad culling issues. In the third fight VS TC in the NE part of Bay, myself and some other people in a gank squad are killing from the west side (you can see the dunk marks on Azi’s minimap) but we didn’t render to friendlies for the entire fight.

The last fight with KnT shows what appears to be a peculiarity with the new culling mechanic I suspect, in that it appears to have a variable range at which characters are forced to cull past a certain range, even if already loaded. At the start of the fight it’s around 1600, but for whatever reason (I suppose proximity) that range deteriorated to around 800 mid fight, as you see us flow in and out of vision depending on Azilyi’s perspective. It’s equal in so far as neither side has any idea how many people the other have

Zerg breaking is gaining as much of a culling advantage as you can, running into the middle of the other zerg with as many boons and invulnerability as you can get, and spamming as much damage as you can.

Frontal warfare is an ebb and flow between two zergs across a front where one trys to gain a positional advantage and make the other zerg use up all its room behind it to wipe it, move it, or commence a siege. The zergs engage or disengage at will. This ballet happens across the map.

So zerg breaking is like frontal warfare minus one dimension. I prefer frontal warfare. Others like immediate annihilation. To each their own I guess.

I could be wrong but I think the developers intended for immediate annilation to only occur in a throne room once a zerg has completely run out of space.

One thing I’ve noticed from FA is that a lot of them seem to be running some pretty scary damage builds. That, when in the right position, they can nuke just about anyone, but when caught unawares or in the open field, things tend to take a turn for the worse. A human ballista if you will.

All servers have to adapt while moving up tiers, as naturally the higher one goes in the tiers, the more heated it becomes, and the faster the meta advances. We experienced a similar thing going into tier 1, our customary style of play being rather detrimental to our lives. If given the opportunity from the rating system, FA too will adapt in time

Well, I’m going to put a foot in my mouth so I’m going to open with a disclaimer that I am not the greatest strategist in [RET]. After going up against a particular BG guild who used the new culling mechanics VERY effectively, we changed our strategy and to a lesser extent our composition to compensate. The nature of the comps you are facing is very likely intentional. At the least I can tell you that it is a weakness we are by no means unaware of.

The biggest problem with the system is that it is now numbers agnostic. For people on lower end machines who culled on every fight easily, this is not noticable. However, the new system nearly ALWAYS culls people outside of a much more limited range than previously. Before, rendered characters would remain rendered. This allows for various strategies that were not possible before the change, and are not fun to enact or fight against, yet will become necessary for WvW.

This will be my first post on these forums, and it pains me at such a message. I, Commander Jadon of Principality Of New Katulus [PiNK] (guild leader), very much enjoyed the dolyak walk that was meant to be done in peace, but ended up in sad state of affairs. [PD] and [BT] as well as other randoms that joined in from Fort Aspenwood server made short work of all three servers fun. Yes many do not read the forums but I doubt those from FA that were with us did not yell and cry and scream for everyone to hold fire…which was not done. While it is understood that not all are responsible for the actions of few, it is an unfortunate fact they are still on the same team as the rest of Fort Aspenwood, and the bitter taste in my mouth will only be washed out with blood. For this next week, I as a commander, intend to personally push Fort Aspenwood as a whole as much as possible and will bring the wrath of the Golem God to their door step. Prepare yourselves Fort Aspenwood, for good ol fun times.

Maguuma stopped worrying about BT a few days ago.

edit: I feel bad that FA will never know how truly boring a “huge lead” actually is.

We’re well aware actually. A review of our match history on mos shows that we bounced around being steam-rollers to steam-rolled until we settled into tier 3. In fact, the only close one I can recall prior to this stay in T3 was Vs. Maguuma.

Tier 3, Tier 4, Tier 3, Tier 5, Tier 4, Tier 4, Tier 3 FOREVER.

e: and this isn’t even close to a steam roll, DB and Mag are sitting over 100k.

My impression is that people on higher end machines have seen a massive performance downgrade while people on low to mid machines have seen an upgrade. Personally, I have a higher end machine. Accordingly targets and friendlies now cull and uncull seemingly at random. Worst of all, enemies and friendlies get far enough away from me to render-stealth at less than 1500 range.

It’s taken FA roughly from release till about two months ago before we got decent matchups. Looks like we can look forward to another 3 months of nonsense.

Oh well, at least the last week should be super exciting on NA. The last tier 1 slugfest of old ratings, dolyak war v3 in T2, battle of the new Maguuma and the new Kaineng in T3 with special guest dragonbrand, in T4 Yak’s Bend gets a favorable matchup, and T5-T8 i dunno I don’t keep track of those.

idgi on the bunker guard comment. I’m not a god of wvw strategy or anything but my current impression is that wvw is about comps and bunker guards are all but required right now.

If you don’t like the current wvw meta that much (not many people do) you might want to just spvp until they nerf the SEIGFRIED AND ROY MAULED BY TIGERS out of pbaoe.

supposedly EU has a better meta that’s dominated by small group play that beat the zerg, which might be more your speed.
