It may help if you tell us more about what weapons you use and your build.
The CPU is decent as an i5, but the speed is 3.0 gHz. That isn’t horrible, mine runs max setting and is 2.7gHz but has 6cores, which helps make up for the speed a little bit.
Honestly, clock speed isn’t that big of a deal, it’s all about the cache size/architecture. Efficient memory access goes a long way to improve performance.
Those alienware packages are very overpriced for what you get FYI. It’s like putting a little apple on something and then charging 30% more.
As it stands, GW2 stressed my CPU pretty hard. I’d suggest nabbing an i7. I also suggest one of the Nvidia Fermi cards ( GTX 4xx, 5xx ). Extra money spent on a decent cooling system/case is well worth it ( for some reason GW2 is the only game that makes my system overheat ).
Just happened to me as well. Thanks for your response, I’m glad you’re looking into it.
It’s just the profanity filter replacement term. These forums have a weird filter that picks up on quite a bit of things that probably shouldn’t be filtered. Some people have resorted to actually typing “kitten” to purposely make things ambiguous/funny.
Hi, I’m a thief, and I’ll stealth up to open on a Guardian, and I can’t 2 shot them like other classes because they usually have an Aegis up, but I’ll still backstab into it. I’ll continue to spam my kitten skill with my 10k hp full glass cannon spec/gear, but I can’t kill you in 2s like every other class. Not only that, but while I mash my kitten button, you do damage to me? Retaliation is OP. I don’t have much health, so I should be able to kill everyone before they have a chance to do damage to me.
God, I hope Anet can find more ways to limit this OP retaliation crap.
By only worthwhile is PvE, I’m assuming you mean only worthwhile while you’re solo-leveling ( hearts and DEs ) because they get insta-gibbed by so many things in dungeons.
I’d love to see:
1) Pet attack bugs be addressed ( F2s and moving targets )
2) Increase in pet survivability ( They get absolutely mashed in dungeons )
2) Useful spirit builds ( i.e. spirits don’t die when I fart and take forever to re-summon )
3) Longbow/GS damage revisited ( perhaps make them more “active” )
4) Useless utility skills re-worked ( mentioned by Mod )
5) I don’t want to be rooted while attacking with a 1h sword ( “I was going to roll out of that 1-shot, but I too intent on whacking this thing with my sword that I couldn’t move” )
I think that those are the biggies. I feel the offhands are in a pretty good place and if the QZ shortbow bug is fixed, that will be in a good place as well. Axe seems OK.
Agreed. GW1 did the same kind of thing, and it was beyond annoying.
Oh my god, I want to use spirits!
What’s this Nigro profession you speak of?
I’ve been wondering this myself. It’s effectively free right now, but the process really fluffs my kitten.
Reducing the spawn rate and making some adjustments to spawn rates including DE’s may deter a lot of the botting, I’d also like to see some roaming bosses that require groups to kill in specific areas of each map or hard roaming mobs that use specific fighting tactics to interfere with bots. This was done in FFXI to deal with fishing bots and worked well.
Like the Fel Reavers in WoW. It was always humorous to see someone get stomped by a two thousand foot giant evil robot like they didn’t see it coming or the ground shaking.
If conditions are your issue, use the signet as your heal, use shouts with Pure of Voice and Soldier Runes, and trait to drop another condition every 10 seconds. Guardians have the lowest tier of hitpoints, but have tons of condition removal to make up for it.
Crithammer/Shouts/Altruistic Healing is boss. Everything except for our dodge heal scales so horribly with healing power, it’s probably best to try power/precision/toughness mixed with some power/precision/vitality/critdamage to taste. You can easily maintain 8-12 might stacks, you’re really tanky, you still get decent crit damage numbers, and you provide a lot of group support. IMO, it’s win/win.
Protection is so good.
Yeah, it seems like there are places where either (1) The respawn rate needs to be toned down or (2) The aggro radius needs to be toned down. Either of these would alleviate the problem.
If you spec deep Water/Arcane Ele’s are actually extremely tanky characters.
If you want to be a bit more tanky while leveling, try a hammer. You’ll have a really good protection uptime, which is 33% damage reduction. Also take a look at your shouts. I’d at least get “Hold the Line” for leveling. It’s extra protection and regen. “Stand Your Ground” becomes really good later on too ( stability is boss ).
Went with a tanky crithammer build, never looked back. I love this class!
This pretty much forces players to run through huge groups of mobs because killing things on the way to your destination is not feasible. Then other people get hit by the big group being trained by the guy running through. It’s a giant cluster-kitten of kitten proportions.
I think you’re using DS incorrectly for damage. There is no reason to stay in DS past the fury duration as you said, having less LF means less DS 1 damage. The sooner you get out of it, the sooner you can get back in and gain fury again. Reduced CD on DS also helps a lot.
Gotta love those “aha” moments. I just switched my guy to mainly hammer, and he’s an absolute juggernaut now. IMO, protection is one of the best boons we can get.
Haha, just needs dyed purple and silver. That’s definitely a Shredder helm.
Hammer 5 is fixed? I gave up on hammer when I spent so much time setting someone up just to watch them dodge-roll out of the ward.
Think of it like a super watered down D2 Thorns aura.
I rock this:
With axe/focus and staff, berserker gear.
DS is a beast, you can hop into it for the 5s that you get fury, and blast huge ( for a necro ) numbers, then get out of it. With the reduced cooldown, I rarely use axe or staff auto, it’s just there if I happen to need a filler. Remember that you can swap weapons in DS, but it will interrupt casts. It’s not difficult to swap between casts.
Axe 2 is OK damage, but it’s a great LF generator. You get bonus damage for keeping your LF above 50%. You keep weakness and quite a few vulnerability stacks on your target. Target the Weak is also a great damage boost. Targetted Well of Suffering. Signet of Undeath is great utility, but I swap for Spectral Armor/Walk when you need to have a stun break handy.
No, no.
15 characters.
For wvw if you also learn the staff you can put up a barrier that can block a gate entrance & won’t let other team in a bit longer
Until they realise that they can dodge roll through it or just jump through it. Welcome to broken skills.
Main-hand damage stats are used for your main-hand attacks. Offhand damage stats are used for your offhand attacks. Any stat bonuses ( power, etc ) are cumulative across both weapons. AFAIK, sigil bonuses work independently of which skill you use. So, a 5% bonus damage on an offhand will count for both main-hand and off-hand skills. Be careful with sigils. A lot of them are bugged, and a lot of them don’t stack.
Thief dual wielding, I’m not sure how the number 3 skill works.
EDIT: ooh, Rainbow doesn’t think sigils work the same way. I could be wrong.
I highly suggest playing each class until about ~16-20 to see what you like best. There is no hurry to get to 80 in this game. Choose a class based on play-style, not what others say is powerful at the moment. GW2 will go through tons of changes and balancing iterations.
Ranger – Fairly versatile pet class. Pets are nice for leveling in the open world, but die very easily in dungeons. That kind of sucks, as they make up a substantial portion of your damage.
Elementalist – These guys are pretty cool. You can switch elemental attunements ( air, earth, water, fire ) to gain access to different skills and bonuses. Definitely a lot to do here, and they can be fairly complex. They are the normal spell flinging “wizard” type class.
Necromancer – You deal death, plain and simple. They are great at spreading conditions. Their summoned minions seem rather lackluster. Necros can also shift forms into virulent clouds, death shrouds, and liches. Definitely a lot to do.
Engineer – They are pretty fun. They can equip kits that change the skills available to them. You can use a pack of different grenades, throw elixirs that buff/debuff, strap on a flamethrower, etc. They can also set up turrets.
Mesmer – You’re a spellcaster that deals with illusions and confusion. You’re a trickly little kitten.
Warrior – Pretty self-explanatory. You hit things. Hard.
Guardian – They are mostly a melee support class. They give out a lot of buffs and can be fairly tanky. Their range options are limited and somewhat lackluster.
Thief – You hide in the shadows and pop out to do burst damage. They have the best escape mechanisms of any class. Think of them as skirmishers.

Agreed. I loved Dervish.
That being said, the Gargoyle Staff and Final Rest are shaped like a scythe and the Necromancer gets a shadowy scythe blade at the end of his staff while in combat.
AFAIK, precursors are random drops or can be made in the forge. You either buy them off the TP or play the RNG game.
The one-shot mechanics in dungeons is what kills pets. We can’t stow them away without them popping out, and they can’t dodge 1 shots. You can’t even call them out of some one-shots, like the guy in AC that pulls everyone to him and spins. My pet is honestly about 35-40% of my damage while I’m not bursting. Boo!
Much appreciated Aelial. Makes my decision to stack toughness easier
Is the depletion rate of life force in DS a fixed value or a percentage of total life force?
Am I the only one that likes power necro for DE tagging? The Axe 3 ability tags quite a few mobs, as does a ground targetted Well of Suffering and the DS 4. Focus also has a bounce skill and staff auto attack pierces. It is by far the easiest time I’ve ever had tagging things.
Disclaimer: He’s new, so he’s not 80 yet, I don’t know how it will change later on.
I rocked jeweler and tailor on mine, and I had no issues with out leveling the gear I made. It usually sat in my bags waiting on me to catch up to the gear to wear it. It made leveling much easier, always having level-appropriate gear. I relied on drops / heart vendors for weapon upgrades.
Meh, more minions just means that the first AoE will kill more minions.
Haha, I wouldn’t worry about rangers out-damaging you any time soon.
Things will change over time. I suggest choosing a “main” class based on flavor, not on forum whining. Mists lets you play the FotM broken things anyway.
I’m glad Asuran head sizes are correct now. That was my biggest concern, and it’s nice that it is laid to rest.
About tree fitty.
You can always reset traits, so it’s impossible to permanently screw them up. You’re also not going to get into the highest tier until level 60, so they’ll be spread around at low levels, and you’ll specialize more when you unlock higher tiers.
Some traits of note for leveling are the regen at 75% health ( 5 points in Nature ) and the quickness on pet swap ( 5 points in Beast Mastery ) are definitely worth taking. Get used to swapping pets for F2 cooldowns and fat buffs.
Just so you know, the regen from Dolyak(6) is hot garbage. There are probably much better runes for whatever you’re trying to do.
I still don’t understand why PvP balancing is going on when so many classes have bugged skills, traits, and mechanics. Even runes and sigils are bugged. I can’t get completion of half of the maps because I’m missing a single bugged skill point. I stand in a DE area for 10 minutes waiting for waves of enemies only to realize that it is just a bugged out event.
It makes more sense to me to work on fixing the bugs, and worry about balance later unless there is something that is going around insta-killing everyone. Nobody knew this animation bug that nobody knew existed until it was “fixed”, but there are huge stickied lists of actual issues that are being pushed aside.
Disclaimer: About the bugs, they can get frustrating, but this is actually a pretty good game. The sound and graphics teams did great work, it’s beautiful. The devs gave me a wicked case of alt fever.
I mainly sPvP as a GS/LB ranger. Power/Vit/Toughness gear, fairly tanky. He’s difficult to bring down. His damage is kind of lackluster, but a dead ranger deals no damage. Quickening Zephyr is boss with GS, you are constantly evading with the 1 skill. I’ll also pop it after I use LB to put on vulnerability and then channeled pew some faces off. Usually best to line this up with a canine knockdown so you don’t get interrupted.
Just find what you like that fits your style. I really liked GS and LB so I tried to make something that I enjoy playing.
I made an ele where only the minor traits are attunement specific. 10 Earth / 30 Water / 30 Arcana. You get insane bonuses for hopping through attunements. Ironically, water has the most points, but I usually try to spend the least time in it, so I can get bonuses on re-entering.
She doesn’t do “loldps”, but I’ll be kitten if she isn’t the most survivable build that I’ve played.
2 seems to fail when I hit it right after I get into the downed state. It will pulse like it is being activated, but it will never do anything. I have to keep reminding myself to wait a second before I use it, so it doesn’t really help against people finishing me with quickness. Anyone else notice this? Could be latency, but I rarely have any latency issues unless I’m in WvWvW zerg.
3 rarely works, it pretty much just calls my pet back to me and he stares at me.
EDIT: It tried to format this in a list, apparently the # is a special tag. Hmm..
Does anyone know how the condition damage % ( from trait lines ) stacks with +condition damage?
So if I have no condition damage gear, but 25% condition damage from traits, does that still add damage or is the 25% a modifier on my existing +condition damage stat?
Trying to figure out what to do with my Ranger while I’m stuck at work for a bit longer. I swear, I was extremely productive earlier
Thanks!
