I named my cats “Cat Five” and “Script Kitty”
The wiki lists an effect recharge of 8 seconds on some of the spirits. What exactly is this?
I’m just sayin’, if you want a game that is purely designed around pvp, that’s your option. Don’t play a game that is designed to have multiple game types, and then complain about stuff that exists for that very reason.
There was some improvements that people were very happy with a patch or two back. I think it had to do with tracking moving targets better.
its not for eveyone that is true, its for players that are new at mmo’s… or are bad at them…
i cant stand this pve game build system, pve and ANet DEV’s ..lol has much i hate BDO quest system and history.. its hoooorrible ive been playing more bdo than gw2… while im waitting to for some other mmo to go alpha… pity that my +8 gear isnt that good for pew pew…
Meanwhile ill try to apear on WvW just to team up with some players while Anet keeps borking up WvW even more…
Even Disney would create a better pvp game…
Ok, just because some of us like co-op play over trying to prove who has the larger player kill count doesn’t mean we are bad at mmorpgs. If this was a moba, sure. That’s designed for one thing and one thing only. This game is more diverse than that, and if that’s an issue for you, I hear LoL calling your name.
Yeah, I’m hard pressed to think of a set of utilities on any profession that needs to be redone more than those guardian spirit weapons…
no? lol it’s a very strong trait. condi duration increases dps A LOT.
Spoken like a pve hero.
While I want Anet to focus more on WvW, I very much understand pve will always be the main focus of the game in an MMO. Maybe you should understand this too.
I would argue that they haven’t focused on pve anymore than they have on the other game types. I suppose you could argue that they haven’t done skill splits for WvW, but then that is a mix of pve and pvp (since you are working alongside a lot of other people against a lot of other people and it’s not about personal glory like pvp is). So I’m not sure how that works.
Does WvW get the pvp or the pve versions of stuff? I feel like it should get the pvp version, but not sure…
I actually agree that guardians are not paladins, and that’s why I like guardians. Can’t stand paladins in pretty much every game they’ve ever existed in. shrug
The trinity does exist if you are doing raiding, where roles are more defined. So if you want to tank in a raid, mesmer is your best bet.
I’d say that even in raids, it’s way, way less “trinity” than in, say, WoW.
(and FWIW I like the lore of guardians way more than traditional paladins, I just can’t stand the gameplay. which makes me really sad.)
agreed on the trinity stuff. Another reason I like GW2.
What aspect of the gameplay, if I may ask? (i tend to be flexible on gameplay, one of the reasons I have most professions at 80 with elite specs unlocked.)So, keep in mind that this is about how I feel about the gameplay, and I don’t think guardian is “broken” or anything. It just isn’t good for me — which is fine, there are other classes I enjoy, and no doubt people feel the same way about them.
I had three big complaints about guardian, which I did play a bunch at 80 including full elite, etc.
The first one is that aegis is a great defensive tool, but I have close to zero control over it. I can’t “save” it for a specific mechanic, because it pops up on a timer, and is eaten the first time anything does damage. (eg: random add pops the shield with a ranged attack, suddenly I’m defenseless against the champion I’m fighting.)
The second is that so many of the attacks feel slow, while also feeling weak. Part of that is damage output, but part of it is also just the animation and sound effects not quite doing what they should for me.
The third is that I just didn’t enjoy the hammer-sigil model, or the greatsword, or the bow. They all felt like they had two or three useful buttons, and several that were just a waste of time. Most other classes there might be one utility that’s not frequently used, but most stuff seems like it has value somewhere. Guardian, not so much.
So, that’s what did it. I think I’d probably have been OK with the second two if I had more control over aegis, so that it felt more like an active defense than a random, uncontrolled damage reduction that was better ignored than payed attention to.
The closest thing to an active defense that is more targeted is blind, which is the condition form of aegis, and I don’t know that we get much of it, but yeah I can definitely understand your point on that one. If we had easier access to reapplying it, without devoting half your traits to it, it would be a little better.
I had the same impression when I first started playing it in terms of the speed. Hammer AA is really slow, and the whole class feels slow because of a lack of access to swiftness. I know a lot of people haven’t liked it for that reason alone.
Utilities are definitely a problem. The spirit weapons we’ve been promised a rework, but nothing so far. Meditations are decent if selfish, Consecrations work well in group content, so those two kinda balance each other there. And traps… I’ll be honest, I’m hoping the next elite spec is better cuz personally I hated DH. I’m looking to play a support guardian at this point, so speed isn’t as much of an issue, and I can focus on what I do like about the class.
But no, all valid points and I completely understand why you feel the way you do. Hope you’re enjoying some other class at least.
Oddly, I tried a norn and an asura mesmer, and the one that finally did it for me was a charr. Was not expecting that.
Haha, that is interesting, you are the third person in this thread to like the Charr-Mesmer combination even though most consider that as odd.
Female Charr mesmer is my very first and main character (Ash Legion of course). I love everything about her, including the chatter (i find “might means right” or “looks like new territory” hilarious).
After that, for the sake of diversity, I tried out the other races except human. My Asura Ele aside, it just did not click with the others. Even though I like the look of my male Sylvari Revanant and my female Norn Thief, I do not like playing the human-based shape and the animations. It just feels dull to me and I cannot relate to them.
In contrast, even though I find Ranger one of the simpler (or boring) classes, I enjoy playing mine just because he is a Charr. Just taking him for gathering and watching the running/gathering/skill/idle animations is so much fun. Running around on a Shiverpeaks map and knowing that “I” have fur against the cold.
My most recent creation is a classic Charr Guardian. I was not much into the guardian theme before (heavy armor class plus that “saint” thing did not really appeal to me). I mainly created him because they are so useful in WvW large scale fights. Turns out that this character is just amazing and a ton of fun to play, no surprise that so many Charrdians are running around.
So yeah, I am a huge fan of Charrs to the point that I zoom into most of other peoples Charrs I see running around to have a closer look. That being said, Asuras can be nice as well.
You’re not the first person I know who has a mostly if not all charr cast of characters. XD
I do like the charr a lot, but I like variety too much to settle for one race. My toons so far:
Charr: Ranger (female, blood), Mesmer (female, ash), Engineer (male, iron)
Norn: Guardian (female), Reaper (male (I made this specifically for reaper)), Ranger (male)
Human: Necro (female), Warrior (male)
Sylvari: Elementalist (female), Daredevil (male)
Trying to get an asura idea that works for me. Thinking about ele, thief (now that condi for them doesn’t suck), or maybe (MAYBE) herald, and specifically for herald, since base rev is unplayable to me.
I’m really picky in strange ways as well. I love Charr, and love the necro as a profession, but Charr necro just hasn’t jived for me. Maybe I need to try again? Or maybe there’s another race that fits better.
I love my female Norn elementalist, and I love my Charr mesmer and warrior. Still trying to find something that seems to fit well with Sylvari, but nothing has so far.
Have you tried a Sylvari necro?
I have not! Would you recommend that? Why or why not? I like male Sylvari but their voices are a bit…so so for me. I tried a female Sylvari mesmer and hated it, but loved a Charr mesmer. Maybe if I couldn’t enjoy a Charr necro, that means a Sylvari necro might work?
I have a norn male necro and a human female necro. They both work great for me, the norn is the reaper and the human is my condi minion backwoods priestess of Grenth. Think witch but not the stereotypical ugly wart covered ones lol
Oddly, I tried a norn and an asura mesmer, and the one that finally did it for me was a charr. Was not expecting that. Gotta be willing to experiment. (love charr btw, just didn’t think a light armor class would work. Using the tier 2 cultural armor. Loving it.)
My ele is sylvari, which works well, considering a second ele as an asura. not sure yet. I don’t have an asura, I want one, but I keep hitting a mental wall with the ones I’ve tried. The mesmer lasted a while but I got tired of it, started a thief, but that was a little too bouncy lol.
Do the voices and animations mesh between norn and necro for you?
Hearing a Norn yell “Suffer” and “You are All Weaklings!” is pretty awesome. Totally happy with my choice on that one.
I was seriously confused when I started reading cuz I was like “Deathly Chill doesn’t work like this at all!” and then I looked at the date… >_<

Then I made a female Norn Necromancer. Perfect. Holds a greatsword strongly, runs with daggers as if she was born with them, looks Majestic with Nevermore weilded.
You forgot trots like a horse. Thats majestic too. It makes you forget about the back hair and constant drunkenness.
So sad. So much norn hate. I think everyone is just envious of them for some reason. My first reaper is male norn and he’s amazing. Looks exactly how I wanted him too. Even more so now with that ice armor outfit. My second (yes OP I have two necros too!) is human female in the dry bones garb and has that primitive witch priestess of Grenth thing going on.
OP, make the character you want to play, and will enjoy seeing running around on the screen. I leveled a mesmer 3 TIMES before I got it right, and it ended up being a female charr (Ash legion of course) lol! So seriously, make what you want to play and play it. You can always sell/salvage/etc the gear and remake it on the new one. Ascended can just be tranferred, anything else isn’t that much to craft (unless you are using some of the more expensive stat sets like trailblazers).
Here’s a little norn love. I dusted off my norn necromancer with a new look, but I’m not sure which way to go. What do you think? Angel or Devil?
Devil, but I think you need a staff that doesn’t look so lovey with that lol XD
Otherwise, very nice!!!
@Rabbitup and Aeolus, I used metabattle to show the fact that Guardian has way more build diversity over all the gametypes then revenant does. Your opinions about metabattle aside, that can’t be argued. I will disagree on Aeolus’ low opinion of our build diversity, since I’ve seen both power and condi builds using almost every weapon we have, and used effectively, at least in pve. I can’t and won’t speak to pvp or wvw, don’t play those.
Edit: And again, I’m speaking purely about the comparison of guardian to revenant. Guardian to any other profession, that’s a different conversation.
i tend to ignore pve on this game… i tend to forget about that as well…. still quantity does not means quality…
im actually trying to get into pve with SW and burn build… but all i can spend is 2-5 minutes in pve until i want to press alt-f4,pve is dammn boring…
It’s not for everyone. I can’t stand pvp. I refuse to even enter that part of the game. That’s what makes this game really cool, is that there are so many ways to play it. But as I’ve said repeatedly in multiple places throughout the threads, people need to specify what gametype they are talking about before starting a thread. Saves a lot of time.
Edit: my suggestion? try dungeons fractals or raids. OW is generally boring, except for some of the map meta events in SW and HoT.
I actually agree that guardians are not paladins, and that’s why I like guardians. Can’t stand paladins in pretty much every game they’ve ever existed in. shrug

It is strong, especially considering that this +50% doesn’t count towards the +100% condi duration cap!
THIS. So much THIS.
It doesn’t even affect Shroud damage.
What Dadnir said. It is only in effect when the scepter is wielded. DS or RS is basically a different weapon set.
I’ve been thinking about this a bit too. My experience with using them has actually been decent, as I’ve been able to drop them in each fight when running fractals (with obvious exceptions like the jumping puzzle part of uncategorized), and was able to see positive gains with the trait for my group. That said, most of the kill switch abilities on them aren’t that good, with the possible exception of spirit of nature.
Then I decided to compare them to other similar abilities. The first that came to mind was banners. Banners also provide a buff, but they have a smaller radius (600 as opposed to 1000), but have the upside that they can be picked up and moved, even used in this mode to provide other buffs, including swiftness, which is useful in running battles with pugs or OW events. I forget how the durations compare between the two.
I know they aren’t ideal for other game types. Not sure if this one can really be effectively balanced across game types.
Edit: I get using a trait to unbind them, but it would have to be a GM trait for that, cuz that is too big of a tactical gain.
Also, food for thought. If the spirits follow you, they would get hit by AoEs that target you, whereas their lifespan would probably be longer otherwise.
Edit again: the petting zoo complaint should apply to necros before rangers. They spawn way more followers than we do.
(edited by bearshaman.3421)
You should look into our base damage and coefficients then. If Anet did more PVE-side tweaks to power weapons, then maybe Rangers can have some semblance of a DPS option rather than sub-optimal viability.
But instead, they make odd – even stupid (to be blunt) – choices like increasing Mesmer’s Blurred Frenzy by 100% in PVE only (for…?) and giving Whirling Defense a damage boost.
I’ll make another effort to understand those at some point.
Realm won’t matter (beyond a US one) unless you want to play World v World, which you didn’t mention. If you do, you will want to get on a high pop realm.
Beyond that, I would say one of the heavy armor classes, most likely Guardian, with Warrior a close second. Revs don’t have good tank builds imo.
I personally just went about leveling every profession, it makes you understand the game a lot better and the leveling process is really fast/smooth. Looking at your list, maybe a ranger/druid will be a change of pace. While condi druid is the meta for top tier, power is still viable for lower tier stuff.
That depends on game type and role. Power glyph buffer druid is top for raids because you’re primarily there to heal anyways. What game type is a huge factor when talking about these things, and you have to be careful because most of the people on here are gonna assume PvP and won’t advise on other gametypes unless told up front.
Heh, you people are a bunch of enablers!
New asura necro has been rolled, and I even bought her a pink quaggan backpack. So far she’s been great!
Making people happy, one character at a time.
And yet, guardian has double the number of builds as revenant on metabattle, and is more readily accepted into groups from what I’ve seen. I’m not saying we are doing great, but to say that we are worse off than revenant? That’s just crazy talk.
It is strong, especially considering that this +50% doesn’t count towards the +100% condi duration cap!
THIS. So much THIS.
It’s not that power ranger is bad (It’s not), it’s that condi for rangers is really good. It’s not that power ranger is bad, it’s that power scaling and coefficients are low while conditions are not limited by skill coefficients.
FTFY
I said what I meant. Coefficients aside, we wouldn’t be as effective at condi if we didn’t have multiple skills that drop a lot of stacks of a particular condition up front on cast. The tradeoff being that the duration of the conditions tends to be shorter, but that just means we end up seeing that damage get used more, not wasted because its drawn out over time.
You’re not wrong either (or at least I have no idea, I’ve not looked closely at those), but what I said is very true as well.
Healing/power druid is meta for raids. PS warrior will do well everywhere. Elementalist is still top tier dps. All are very effective power build professions.
If you are wanting to continue progressing the personal story past zhaitan, I would suggest going into living story season 2 next (though I’d watch a youtube vid for the season 1 playthrough storyline). After that, get Heart of Thorns, complete its storyline, and go on the living story season 3 (which is about halfway done I think, and they are releasing the episodes as we “speak”). Want to do that soonish, before LS3 isn’t free anymore.
If you don’t care about the storyline, then GW2 doesn’t have just one set endgame.
Dungeons earn you money, loot, and a specific currency that is the only way to get certain items and gear skins that are unique to each dungeon.
Fractals are like dungeons, but they get progressively harder the higher the level of the fractal, and require ascended gear and more of it the higher you go. They are a great way to get ascended gear as well as money and other loot.
Raids are larger group “dungeons” with some serious fight mechanics. You will be expected to use certain builds here, even more so than with fractals and dungeons. This is similar to the raiding you had in WoW.
If Co-op play isn’t your thing, there is PVP and SPVP. (these are not my thing, but you can jump in at any level, as you will be treated as lvl 80 and have full access to pvp gear at lvl 1. This is to keep pvp from being dependent on money as to who wins.)
If you want a mix of the two, there is World v World. People from your server fighting a grand melee against people from other servers. This gametype has its own build considerations different from the rest, and all players on your server benefit from how well your server does in WvW battlegrounds. Both pvp and wvw have their own reward systems as well.
End game is entirely up to you and what you enjoy doing. I’d suggest giving everything a try and see what you enjoy. There is also lvl 80 map events to join in on, world bosses to defeat, achievements to earn, jumping puzzles to solve, collections to complete for other unique loot, etc.
Then I made a female Norn Necromancer. Perfect. Holds a greatsword strongly, runs with daggers as if she was born with them, looks Majestic with Nevermore weilded.

It’s not that power ranger is bad (It’s not), it’s that condi for rangers is really good. We have several condi skills that load up a lot of stacks initially, instead of needing time to build up, so the condi has more burst as opposed to the slow burn that people usually associate with condi builds.
Now compared to other power builds, yes we fall behind Warrior (they have way more access to might and other things) and Reaper (Decimate Defenses and Deathly Chill make them pretty powerful). Revenant doesn’t get good until you have Herald. But ultimately it’s up to your play style.
Each class has only two underwater weapons at most. So just take one of each and mess around with them, see which one you like better. But it isn’t a choice you have to make really…
There is a karma merchant in Orr that sells lvl 80 exotic breathers in about 3 different stat sets.
The vendor sells Masterwork only (which I feel are sufficient).
The only exotic breathers are the rime-rimmed mariner’s (only from wintersday). The only rares are the Benthic, from Tequatl fights.
I stand corrected. Oops
There is a karma merchant in Orr that sells lvl 80 exotic breathers in about 3 different stat sets.
Honestly I’d never use the boost. It’s a great way to be able to mess around with new characters at lvl 80 to see if you like them or not.
And trying to learn a class once you are already at lvl 80 is also a bit overwhelming i think. Just me.
You are crazy. Revenant is unusable. Herald isn’t even wanted in raids for boon support. That class is the only class I couldn’t stand to level to 80. It needs a complete rework from the ground up more than any other class.
My advice for a new player.
Choose thief. One of the two skill balance developers mains thief and it’s been top dog for five years and never gets nerfed. It’s amazing now and in the expansion (according to leaks) gets 1-shot kills while being invisible and maximum range. FACT.Don’t touch necromancer. It’s garbage, can’t do anything and has infinite cooldowns on everything and no movement abilities. ALSO A FACT.
Please realise these are slight exaggerations but they are also… pretty much true.
except not really. Necro is one of the most played classes in the game, and Thief is only now getting a build that might get accepted in raids. So it really depends on your playstyle and what content in game you want to play. ALWAYS ask what game type people are talking about, because most of the posts you will see are talking about pvp, and that might as well be a totally different game from anything else.
Season 1 can not be played, however there is a in game cinematic that will explain some of it. However if you really want to experience Season 1 (which has the back story of a lot of recurring characters in it), I would recommend looking for a game movie on youtube for it. I watched one and it explained so much stuff that I had missed….
just search for gw2 season 1 game movie and you should find a few…
I know where to find the information about them, I was asking in terms of cost and time which ones have people found to be cheaper, and/or quicker to craft.
So what legendaries have people found to be the most useful? I have all professions except revenant, so regardless of weapon I have a character that can use it.
Also which legendaries are the easiest to get all the stuff to craft it?
and I’m including weapons, armor, and trinkets.
Yeah, the first three parts of the personal story are tied to your race, so it would seriously break the game to allow people to change races.
Legendaries are Account Bound, not Soulbound; and no, they are not mechanically better than ascended. They are designed to be an aesthetic choice, and a little bit of a convenience.
They have (PvE) stat combos available, and are updated with any new ones, so I guess “future proof” is another feature.
If they are Account bound, then why are there legendaries on the trading post? I didn’t think you could sell account bound items…
Also keep in mind that there’s a pretty simple recipe using the mystic forge to change the stats on ascended gear. So if you have stuff and wish it was a different stat set, you can do that!
https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Ascended_armor#Prefix_change
Thanks on the might question. I played the game for a year using double tap (and using the ASWD keys for movement) and recently have been trying to retrain myself to use the mouse for movement, but dodging is proving hard to adjust to using the V key, and some movement still requires the ASWD keys (particularly when gliding). So I’m wondering if it’s worth the hassle, cuz holy cow am I dying alot now…
You can get exotic rampager armor from one of the karma merchants in Orr. The information on which one and where they can be found is in the wiki.
For quickest impact, you should focus on weapons over armor, and trinkets before everything. You can get ascended trinkets and backpieces that can be set to whatever stat set you want from farming the LS3 areas.
Here’s a similar question. Is there any real benefit to legendary items over ascended? Best I can tell it’s basically you can change the stats on them whenever you want (though I don’t know if that includes the new 4 stat HoT sets) but that seems to be countered by the fact that they are soulbound unlike ascended gear which is account bound. So given that most weapons are intended for particular builds, not sure why being able to switch stats on a soulbound weapon even matters. Is there any other benefit to legendary stuff?
1. Does might have an affect on the damage done by conditions that you have already applied to an enemy, or only to new condition stacks?
2. Aside from jumping puzzles and other similar areas, is there any other times where using double tap to dodge is disadvantageous?
Agreed, particularly for raids and high level fractals, which require more skill and teamwork to complete, and thus people have more expectations on you in the group.
However, for lower level fractals, dungeons, and group map events, you can play whatever you want. I love both classes, but druid definitely wins in terms of support.
Necro has the ability to manage and manipulate conditions, pulling them from your party to yourself and sending them back to the enemy/boss, as well as spreading them around. It also has the ability to give life steal, which isn’t huge overall, but does give everyone a passive heal and damage boost just from attacking. Reaper also has considerable access to chill, which is a great debuff to slow the mobs down.
Cool ty
Altho I’m not a fan of grenades since there is no auto fire. I guess I’ll get used to pressing 1 repeatedly lol
I don’t know that autofire works with any of the kits.
