Warrior is a straight forward, no frills class. It’s perfectly fine to not like that playstyle, that’s why, you know, we have different classes in games like this one.
No.
If I wanted to play a gear threadmill, I would have just stayed with my old MMOs. Yes, we don’t know that many details yet, but the information ANet did release leaves little room for speculation about the basics unfortunately. They’re doing a 180° turn at full speed.
That build is built around Cloak and Dagger ( dagger 5 ). Basically the move puts the thief into stealth and gives him access to Tactical Strike ( Sword 1 while in stealth ), a full 2 sec daze – that’s the “global cooldown” you experienced. With the right trait setup you can get the initiative cost down, so you can use it quite frequently.
Everytime when in stealth you’ll get some crazy regen and condition removal too.
Pretty OP build in my book as well, but at least you get a chance to actually react.
Respectfully, the HabibLoew response is clouded by developer sensibilities and ignores the real pain point. HabibLoew argues technicalities and presenting facts that, broadly speaking, are irrelevant from a customer satisfaction point-of-view.
[…]
I believe the HabibLoew response presents a myopic perspective that tries to suggest that we simply ignore the smell and taste of bacon because it is high in fat and cholesterol. The response speaks to the wrong question. The response is a non-starter towards addressing the real concern.
Have to agree unfortunately. With Desolation and Black Tide actively recruiting North American players the separation of the ladders is largely irrelevant already, no matter if ArenaNet acknowledges it or not.
Necro is one of the easiest classes to level, thanks to the general tankyness and the many AoE abilities. Just drop dagger 5 and a well and go grab a coffee…Not very exciting but a good option if GW2’s fast paced combat and the need to constantly move and dodge for most classes isn’t your thing.
I believe warriors need a tuneup vs conditions and on banners.
Chilled, Cripple, and Immo destroy nearly all builds especially Axe. They have no good ways to cure conditions either and usually must trait for removing immo or cripple on heal or take a 45 sec signet. Evis may also need a look at in my opinion cause I tend to get a “miss” even though I could pretty much see the opponent touch the axe.
On the other side, Haste needs to be looked at if not Hundred Blades itself.
Use a Warhorn ?
Edit: If you’re playing Ranger because they use bows; Thieves shortbow is better and Warriors longbow is better than Rangers.
Uh, wrong. The Warrior longbow sucks except for the AoE fire field combo. It only has 900 range. Not better than the Ranger longbow AT ALL.
Actually there is an adept warrior trait that makes Longbow range 1200. What now?
Great. Now you have a trait that’s basically worthless, a range that’s the same as everybody else, and you still only have one combo attack that’s worth anything.
Anything else?
Worthless? Like 85% of the Ranger traits? Doesn’t change the fact that warrior longbow does more dps and is more useful than Ranger longbow.
Anything else?
Be as smarmy as you like, but you’re still wrong. Warrior longbow doesn’t compare to Ranger longbow for DPS.
I’m pretty sure it does. If you enjoy attacking once every 3 seconds then be my guest. Warrior longbow surpasses ranger longbow in every aspect.
Being “pretty sure” doesn’t make you right. Sorry. Just because you keep saying it over and over doesn’t make it true either.
Warrior longbow has it’s advantages over the Ranger longbow, but it’s not better by any stretch of the imagination (except yours, apparently).
The facts make me right. The fact that your only argument so far has been “warrior longbow isnt as good as ranger longbow by any stretch of the imagination, it has 900 range” makes this my last reply to you as you are clearly just a fanboy with no valid points.
Don’t worry, the other 99.9% of players are pretty sure warrior longbow is better than ranger longbow.
Warrior and Ranger Longbow just have different purposes. Warrior LB is a utility weapon for WvW sieges and laying down the huge fire combo field in groups when using a support build. It’s not something pretty much anyone would use for personal DPS though.
Ranger LB has the longest range of any weapon in the game ( talking traited about both here – 1200 vs 1500 ), control effects on almost every skill and a lot better single target dps. The problem with Ranger LB damage is not so much the weapon as such but that glass cannon builds aren’t really viable and the penalty for being in close range punishes builds with longer time to kill way too much.
Because Rangers are so weak compared to any other profession. There’s nothing like fighting alongside a warrior, for example and seeing them kill 4-5 mobs in half the time it takes the Ranger to kill 1 (or maybe 2-3 if you have piercing arrows and can line them up properly).
Complaining about the performance while leveling is utterly ridiculous. Shortbow/Sword+Torch and traps is just as hilariously faceroll as the GS signet warrior.
I think a big reason is that the game in general and not just the class pretty much requires you to use two weapon sets and to be effective one of them really should be melee. The pure ranged nuker build most Ranger players are probably looking for doesn’t really work.
That’s not to say the class doesn’t have any problem, it does. There are a lot of players of the other classes struggling with the same issue though. Picking one weapon set ( in the Ranger’s case usually the Longbow I guess ) like in virtually every other major MMO just doesn’t work in Guild Wars 2 and that takes some getting used to.
Definitely playable, but unfinished.
In WvW you can be very useful in stationary zerg vs. zerg situations, both a conditions based epidemic and a wells build can really put the hurt on. For roaming there are better options though.
With the predominence of bunker builds Necro is very useful in tPvP at the moment, but sort of a one trick pony. Engy and Guardian bunkers rely on boons and Necro is one of the two classes that can reliably remove them. Guardians in particular melt if you just look at them.
In dungeons the many combo fields are nice, but you need good teamwork to make use of them.
There are a ton of bugs though and the traitlines and some weapons need serious attention. Generally speaking the Necro is the most tanky class in the game outside of specialized tPvP bunker builds. If you like a somewhat slower pace and can deal with the bugs it can be a rewarding class to play.

How does the “coated bullets” trait cause one to miss out on wall suppression?
The trait doesn’t, using pistol does. Nades and AoE in general overlap on castle walls, so you can hit players and siege equipment outside of your line of sight. So you can force people completely off the walls or finish them if they retreated a few yards from the ledges. Can’t do that with pistol ( or rifle, for that matter ).
If you aren’t landing 90%+ of your grenades, you are doing something wrong. the spread isn’t that much, unless you are throwing at 1500 range, down off a cliff. And even then..
Poison grenades have a pretty big spread even when used on short distance. I don’t have that problem with the other nades. For close quarter combat I usually use something else anyway though, mostly bombs or toolkit, I swap utilities quite often.
I have to agree with flamethrower being quite underwhelming unfortunately. I’d kinda like to use it for the style, but the actual use you can get out of the 5 primary skills and the toolbelt one is just not good enough. I read somehere here that Asura struggle even more with the obstructed issue than the larger races and that may play a part in my experience with the FT, my engy i Asura.
Health care in Tyria is probably really poor and some dragons flooding the world with those pesky undead doesn’t help.
The popular shout build with Sword+Warhorn and Rifle for roaming/Longbow for sieges is excellent in WvW. Great mobility, great support, decent damage with some investment in condition damage.
This thread should give you an idea where to start:
Warriors are a useful and flexible class in all aspects of the game. The constant whining on this board is completely detached from reality.
The one thing ANet should have another look at are the F-skills. They’re one-dimensional and boring for the most part, having a burst and a defensive option per weapon would be a start.
In response to Rythgar.2896 ( why is quoting such a pita with this forum software ?! ):
The ratio of mid and high pvp levels within a class is a pretty good indicator for whether good players stick with the class. The distribution of levels within a class is actually the useful portion of the data in fact.
Let’s have a look at the Ranger – about 50% of the observed players are PvP level 0-10 and roughly 75% are lvl 15 or below. Of the observed Engineers otoh more than 50% are lvl 20+ and less than 10% are lvl 1-5, by far the smallest bracket.
Interpreting data is always much more difficult than collecting it though. Going on more than 10 years of MMO experience and a job dealing with that kind of stuff here is my take:
Rangers are very popular for style and their excellent PvE performance, so you have a lot of them trying tPvP. Their players either don’t stick with the class or don’t like the game mode though. Combined with the data on classes played released by ANet there are two likely conclusions:
a) the Ranger class is not competitive
b) the Ranger class attracts more casual players than other classes and they just don’t like the very competitive nature of tPvP
Probably both apply, no way to tell how much of the variation either option explains from the data supplied.
Engineers are not very popular with the silent majority ( aka casual and PvE players ) because they require more attention and effort during leveling. People taking them to higher PvE-levels and sticking with them in tPvP are much more likely to be well informed and competitive players – indicating the class performs better at that particular part of the game.
In my experience class distribution varies a lot depending on the origin of the server’s players though. Germans, French and Russians will on average look more for group contribution , while Americans and Asians value 1vs1 performance more. A limited sample like the OP’s is therefore to be taken with a grain ( or two ) of salt.
Hmm, kinda disappointing that those too are the worst, but setups currently are effective? And thank you everyone who has replied so far, I thought that having that companion would be pretty sweet and you guys are confirming that, still undecided though.
With Sword+Torch/Shortbow and traps in your utility skills you’ll rip through pretty much everything in PvE. The Ranger in general is easier to level than the Engineer, all classes in this game are perfectly playable in PvE though. Engineer like the Elementalist just needs a little more effort than most.
Pretty much all builds in this game are much more effective when swapping weapons/kits/elements regularly or even require doing so to function at all, that seems to be part of the design. The exception are some cheesy burst builds.
For Warrior Rifle/Bow for a pure ranged character has some good synergy, imo it’s mostly suited to a support build and not that good 1vs1 though. Same goes for the popular Rifle/Sword+Warhorn combination. Rifle and 2xSword can stack bleeds with the best of them and is excellent sustained damage in a condition based build. Some people also go with Rifle and Axes in a power based build, I haven’t tried that myself though.
One thing you have to keep in mind regarding ranged weapons in general is that they do less damage than melee by design, so when using a primarily ranged build going full glass cannon is usually a bad idea. You either need tons of control ( i.e. be a Ranger ) or go for some defensive stats and utilities in a more balanced build.
Plague.5329:Please go to the Warrior forum for a while. Warriors have a MASSIVE amount of problems and need buffs across the board.
No, they don’t. Warrior is one of the most finished classes, argueably the most finished one.
Plague.5329:The class’ problem is with build viability.
No, it doesn’t. Warrior is also one of the most flexible classes. Flexibility isn’t having 10 options to omgwtfbbq an opponent down in 2 seconds flat though and that seems to be what most of the whiners struggle with.
Elona Reach
You won last weeks tier 1 match. Unbelievable. Then you dropped straight to t2. It was amazing that last weeks winner, the best of the best, could drop to second tier matchup.
While the recent success has attracted some international players, Elona’s population is still predominantly German plus some Austrians and Swiss and with the other servers stocking up on people located in other time zones that makes it so much harder to field a competitive force around the clock. The night and early morning shift are actually playing at night and early morning their local time – Those people just need the occasional break and they took one last week.
Wouldn’t sword main hand for the second weapon set be the better choice if you invest heavily into Arms and adrenaline generation anyway ? It lacks the burst of Eviscerate, but I feel the F1 is much better than axe’s with the enhancements to bleeds.
As for lacking AoE damage, just carry a longbow for sieges in WvW and zergy DEs. Arching projectiles and the huge fire combo field are pure win when aiming at targets on castle walls. Too bad the bow sucks for everything else.
Pretty much everything AoE goes straight through the gates in WvW.
Warrior is a very flexible class actually, no idea why people seem to think they are pigeonholed into certain builds and weapons – they have a lot more viable options than most if not all other classes. All builds have the no frills playstyle in common though and I guess that’s the reason many players get bored easily.
Necros counter the annoying Guardian and Engineer bunker builds.
Antiriad.7160Hm, if badges depend on kills/damage you do that means there is no room for support builds and instead everyone should change his gear to glass cannon (and a few protective spells) I guess.
Arrow cart > glass cannon
You still won’t get any badges for actually supporting though.
Necromancer is the best area denial class in this game. Extremely useful in WvW.
With the overnerfed pistols and rifle being more a CC than a damage tool, one of the damage oriented kits is pretty much a must have unless you’re running with people you know all the time, in which case you can go full out support of course.
I don’t swap as often as I would like. Necromancers don’t really stuff that works well with weapon swapping. I’m running Staff right now for the AOE, and switch over to Dagger/Horn when I want to travel far for the Swiftness buff (with Horn + Spectral Walk, you can have swiftness on permenantly). Other than that, Dagger, Scepter, and Axe don’t really do as much damage as I would like for being in Melee range in light armor.
I’m swapping all the time on my Necro. In PvE, when I’m actually in melee range, even more so than in PvP. Scepter + dagger or dual daggers are my primary set, the AoE slow ( scepter ), channeled dagger mainhand attack and both of the dagger offhand skills are great – just slap Blood is Power on the mob, put the poison field down and transfer both the weakness and the bleeding to the mob with “4”. Drop the Aoe bleed “5”, swap to staff and put marks down, pretty much everything around you will drop dead by now. In PvE Necro is one of the easiest classes to play tbh.
In PvP I’m using the staff as primary weapon. Going into melee range with dual daggers is often not a good idea and the non-damage effects of marks are much more useful than in most PvE scenarios, having 1200 range over scepter/dagger’s 900 helps too of course. The dagger offhand skills and the scepter 2 ( the area slow ) are still great though and I use them regularly.
The reward system in WvW is terrible and needs to be reworked. That’s all.
Um, I’m pretty sure MOST classes have maximum range of 1200
The only class I know that can have its range extended to 1500 is the ranger through a trait. But just because you have two classes – ranger and warrior – and one has 1500 range while the other has 1200, doesn’t mean you can automatically assume every other class has 1500 range. I have no idea how you even came to that conclusion honestly…
Engineers can get 1500 range for grenades with 30 points in the explosives trait line and a very limited number of Elementalist skills work at that range as well. Ele is not at all effective at 1500 thoughand as you probably know Engineer grenades aren’t player targeted and have a substantial travel time, so that extension is pretty much only useful in siege situations or zerg vs. zerg. Hitting anything moving is exceedingly difficult.
The problem with turrets isn’t really their performance, they can be quite useful for a variety of purposes, but the terrible handling and massive downtime. When you need one of the kitten things, you can bet they’re either on cooldown or just ouf of range and because of the cooldowns you can’t set a new one…
Mobility is king in this game and turrets in their current form just don’t support it.
Hidon.4680That being said, I personally believe the real issues with guardians in WvW lies in how people are rewarded.
Yup. A Guardian actually playing to his strengths rather than doing some pitiful damage with scepter or staff is a great asset in WvW. He’s just not gonna get any marks…
With the new Spectral Walk you can kinda get by without Focused Rituals even in defensive siege situations.
Pop SW inside the keep or on the walls, run outside, drop your wells, teleport back.
Doesn’t help you much when attacking though.
It’s a start and the new Spectral Walk is definitely an upgrade. Now on to add some Oomph to, well, most other skills, so we can actually fit it into some builds…
Warrior is the most flexible class in game. If you can’t find a build that suits you, I doubt you’ll succeed with any of the other classes.
The German server Riverside does pretty much the same thing. Zerg every WvW map at 3-8 am…
