We’ve seen a lot of new weapon skins added to the game since launch (Which is awesome!) But the only new Armor skin we’ve received was a rebreather.

When are we likely to see some new armor Skins?

Fastest moving character in the game?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: codingCaptor.9428

codingCaptor.9428

All characters can currently move the “Fastest” (except theoretically thieves, but that’s theorycrafting.) It is simply a matter of figuring out how to get Permanent switfness on that character..

The easiest I’ve found is with Warriors. They have an elite skill Signet Of Rage which gives 30 seconds of Swiftness. Coupled with their trait Signet Mastery and a Warhorn using the skill Charge you can easily get 100% swiftness uptime, just by spamming those two buttons whenever they’re up (every 40 seconds/20 seconds respectively)

I also like to equip a sword for Savage Leap as that makes things even quicker.

There are no Potion buffs that provide Vitality/Toughness. All we have at the moment are Power, Preicsion, Condition damage, and Healing Power (Healing power being new, from Ice Cream)

There is however, food which gives flat bonuses to Vit/Tough. Check out This Page

What minis does Mystic Forge provide?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: codingCaptor.9428

codingCaptor.9428

I am currently trying to finish my mini collection. With the price of exotic minis being greater than some of the precursors, This has left me with a bit of a predicament.

I’ve been looking to the mystic forge in an attempt to make obtaining these minis cheaper. According to my math, I can do this, assuming the following caveats hold true:

1. You cannot get the Karka minis through the mystic forge.
2. You cannot put the Karka minis in the mystic forge and get a non-karka mini.

Could someone clarify for me if these things are true or not? Please and thankyou.

Party Perma Regen?

in Elementalist

Posted by: codingCaptor.9428

codingCaptor.9428

I’m building an Elementalist to run around in WvW and dungeons. I thought the other day, how cool it would be to have a build that provides Perma regeneration for the whole party, so that everyone stays nice and fresh for fights. (Along top of the normal Staff healing paluza that I’m normally doing.)

I know it’s probably not good. That’s not the point. This is 2 parts “For fun” 2 parts “Math excercise” and 1 part “Hey, my party needs to not die!”

Looking over the ways Ele’s can grant Regeneration, it looks like the best option is “Inscription” As it provides 10 seconds of Regen. Unfortunatly, it doesn’t say if it effects Party members or not. (Wording is “Grants a boon” which suggests not, but I’m not sure)

Anyone have any insight on the best way to accomplish this? Or is it not possible?

(I plan on running full boon duration runes, in PvE, so you can assume +100% boon duration in your math.)

I bought an Unbreakable Choir Bell to sell later for profit (Spent all my money on it. I hope what I know about game economics holds true.)

However, I wouldn’t mind running around after my friends ding-a-linging all the livelong day in the meantime.

Is this a thing that I may do? Or is it one of those “once you use it once, you can’t give it away anymore” type items?

They’ve said previously that it is possible to get the rewards from a dungeon if you missed it.

Also: note that you cannot buy Mysitc Cogs or the Griffon Frame from the Trading Post.

Best weapon and armor -level 21 elementalist?

Vitality and toughness will increase your surviveability.

Power will increase your killing power.

The thing is, at the point in the game that you’re at, Increasing your survive-ability really won’t help you that much. At around level 20 the game takes the kid gloves off and starts hitting you with more damage than you can soak with your HP pool (even with the right armor) The idea is that, at this point in the game, you’re going to have to learn to dodge and evade and mitigate damage, which is a key skill you will need to continue on to the rest of the game in the future.

I’d personally grab a set of level 20 Green(Masterwork) armor off the marketplace. What you’d be looking for is anything with the prefix “Strong” That will give you power, which will give you damage, which means you’ll kill things at a reasonible speed.

If you haven’t gotten jewelry yet, I’d pick up a set of masterwork jewelry as well. Garnet is the prefix for damage jewelry at that level. Turquoise for survive-ability.

You should also apply “Upgrade Components” to your armor/weapons, as that will give you a LOT of stats at your level for very little investment. You can do that with either raw Gemstones or Marks That will give you a BIG boost, and you can pick pretty much any stats you’d like (I’d recommend power/vit myself)

At the end of the day though, what you’ll want to build when you get to higher levels varys highly on your playstyle. If you find yourself trying to kill things all the time, power/precision builds will be your thing. If you find yourself taking a liking to being an unkillable tank (Which you CAN do once you get enough traits at level 60ish) Then you’ll go vit/tough. But you have time to figure that out for yourself.

For the time being, load up on power, and go enjoy the game.

how does the combat work?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: codingCaptor.9428

codingCaptor.9428

When you press a button to activate a skill, you will use this skill.

If there is something in the way of the attack, the skill will hit.

Naturally, this makes hitting things with ranged attacks difficult (they don’t want this to be a shooter, after all) So what you can do, is select a target, and everytime you cast a skill you will turn to face your target and attack. If the target is too far away, you’ll still miss, but it will do the aiming for you.

Some ranged attacks also have the added benefit of homing (which can make it feel like WoW at times) But most classes only have 1 such skill (their auto-attack) while the rest of their skills require a bit more finesse.

The combat is Very action oriented, but not neccessarily because of the way attacks work. Positioning and movement are VERY important to not dying. So when we say “action” Don’t picture jumping over enemies and bouncing off trees or something crazy that you’d see in, say, a fighting game. Picture more kiting them along, circle strafing while waiting for an opening, perefectly timed dodges to end up behind an enemy where you can sit and stab them for a while till they turn around and you start the dance all over again.

At least, till you add a 2nd person. Then you make that guy do that job while you stab the enemy in the back with your daggers till he stops moving.

how to group up with friends for sPvP?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: codingCaptor.9428

You have 2 options. You can do what you’ve been doing, which has its obvious problems.

OR you can party up and join free tournaments. The upside to tournaments is you can join as a partial group (at least, according to the tournament browser. I haven’t actually tried this yet) meaning your friend and you will be on the same team! Hurray!

The downside is you’re in it for the long haul (tournaments are 3 games I think?) And the possibility of getting set up vs. a 5-man premade who knows what they’re doing.

Unfortunately, the only method of reporting them is if you remember their names. If you remember their names, you can add them to your friends list, right click on them, and select report. A screenshot should do the trick too.

Otherwise, your only option is to not worry about it and move on to group with a better bunch o’ folks.

What profession to play for dungeon?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: codingCaptor.9428

codingCaptor.9428

Traits are where most all of your power/build/individuality come from. Without being at least level 60 (for your grandmaster traits) You won’t really have the full picture about what a class is capable of.

Dying really fast is a thing at lower levels. It’s actually worse on some of the tankier classes (Guardian, Ele) Because of the way the level scaling and traits work.

The best solution, without putting a bunch of time leveling characters till you find one you like, is to do some sPvP. pick a class, and tinker around in sPvP for a day or two. Then pick a different class. You can try all 8 classes this way (just delete and recreate) And get a feel for what they’ll be doing at 80. Now, you’ll have to remember that PvE and PvP have a lot of different goals, and you’ll be stronger in PvE than you are in PvP (against dumber opponents) But it will give you an idea for how the classes play.

And finally: Play with a friend. All dungeons involve running with multiple people. Your survive-ability increases 300% just by running around with 1 extra dude. This really is all about team play, and while the content CAN be soloed, death is a thing you’ll have to deal with until you get better at your chosen class.

TL;DR: That’s normal. You can solve this problem quickly by playing with more people or gaining a higher level, or you can solve this problem by continuing to do what you’re doing until you get better at the game.

Honestly, if you’re trying to get skillpoints for your legendary, the fastest way is to start a new character.

Leveling a new character and picking up the skillpoints in the field is a lot faster than getting them through leveling up your existing character ~200 times. And since the Bloodstone Shard is accountbound, you just buy it and transfer it through the bank.

It all depends on how close to 200 you are on your existing character.

Guardians can build as “Tanks” And considering their name of their class involves “Guard” people assume that you should be tanking.

There is also a very popular guardian build (called more appropriatly a Bunker build) That is used in sPvP to achieve a neigh-unkillable state. This is why people are suggesting that you “Tank” the enemies.

Guardians cannot tank. If you stand in front of a boss (Or even regular mobs) and you stand there and take damage, you will die. There are not enough heals in the world to keep you healthy and alive if you do this. Do not bother attempting it.

It sounds like you want to DPS (with a bit of healing on the side) You seem to be happy with your playstyle, but generally unhappy with your overall survive ability. Luckily, I know the solution to this problem.

THIS is a link to all of the stat distributions which currently exist in game. What you want is gear that has POWER as it’s primary attribute, with a mix of VITALITY, PRECISION, and CRIT DAMAGE, in that order. If you look at the list, you’ll notice that such gear Doesn’t exist.

That’s okay, you can mix and match.

What you’ll want to do, is grab “Berserker’s gear” (POW/prec/crit dam) Which is primarly used by glass cannons. You will then mix it with “Valkyrie’s gear” which will give you surviveability. YOU DO NOT WANT TOUGHNESS. Guardians have so much armor base, that vitality is better than toughness in every instance. If you were building a tank build, you’d want to grab as much of both (tough/vit) that you could. But you want to hit hard.

How much berserkers vs. Valkyrie I don’t know. That’s up to your personal preferences. I personally run all Berserker’s weapons/armor, and all Valkyrie trinkets. You may find that you’re still too squishy after that, and want to put some Beryl Orbs on your armor for more liveability. Keep in mind that you’re sacrificing Precision (Crit % chance) for Vitality, so your damage output drops for each piece of Valkyrie you get.

That should get you the stats you need to hit hard, and live. I unfortunatly cannot help you with traits or weapon skills, as I’m not familar enough with them. DPS guardian isn’t a thing that I do. But if all you’re doing is PvE, you should be able to get by with what you enjoy the most.

Just remember to dodge!!!

You should be running dungeons. Each exploreable path you clear each day will net you approximatly 1 level per run.

For double the bonuses, Run Fractals. Every 35 fractal relics (Which is 7 mini fractals, or 2 runs at low levels. Higher level fractals give more relics) Can be traded in for a skill point. So not only do you get the exp/skill points from leveling up in the fractal itself, but also from trading in your relics.

Yes, the particle effects with the hearts/stars persist while it is sheathed.

I do not own one, but I saw a screenshot of it sheathed a while ago. Unfortunately, a couple minutes of digging did not turn up my source, so there exists the possibility that I’ve mis-remembered.

That being said, on some of my other weapons with a particle effect, it seems that sometimes it does not display while sheathed. That’s probably a bug, and I should report it.

My only question is: how do I get it?

codingCaptor.9428

There is currently no content in the game that you cannot clear while wearing a full set of Rare MF gear, with the possible exception of High Level Fractals. (But I think Fractals are the exception regardless of what gear you’re wearing) As such, there is nothing wrong with you wearing full MF Gear into any content you feel like doing.

If you’re going to get a set of Fully Stated gear, I would HIGHLY recommend you keep your MF set, either on your person or in the bank. Just so you can switch to it if you ever get the feeling to just go out and mindlessly slaughter karka for a couple hours.

That being said, I really like killing things with big numbers. I love my exotic damage-dealing set of gear. It makes me happy. I rarely wear my MF gear anymore. Since I like to run dungeons, and the primary reward from dungeons are the chests and tokens (Which aren’t effected by MF) It’s just more effort than it’s worth to wear my MF gear.

I have spent time farming old plinx/Lost shore both with and without MF. The difference is noticeable. Large, I would even say. Not in the terms of “I got an exotic!” Nay, that’s not the difference MF is going to make (Exotics/rares are so uncommon that it requires a HUGE sample size to measure any discernible change). The biggest difference are in your Blue:Green ratio. That’s where it’s most noticeable.

need help leveling up

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: codingCaptor.9428

codingCaptor.9428

First things first: Killing mobs in this game is not how you level up. The XP isn’t that good.

If you want to grind levels, what you’ll want to do is Explore and do Events. Run around the open world, grabbing every heart/waypoint/PoI/Vista you can. Skillpoints and Hearts are good exp, but take a bit more time and effort to obtain. Your choice there.

You can also go to WvW for XP as well. Follow around the zerg and participate in events for fast XP. You can technically do this at any level, but you won’t have all of your skill bar unlocked till 30 which can be a problem.

If you’re level 30, you can run a story mode dungeon (AC)Which is pretty much a free levels worth of XP. You can do that every 10 levels. At level 35 there are exploreable dungeons which require more work to clear, but will also give you around a level per path per day. (It’s closer to 80-90% of a level, but it’s still a ton of XP)

There are also fractals which reward decent XP, and crafting which is pretty much a method of converting spare gold into XP. (Skilled/smart people can make money off of it, but the margins make it barely worth it)

Killing mobs? Not important.

How do I keep calm in tight situations?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: codingCaptor.9428

codingCaptor.9428

I think the best thing you can come to realize is that Guardians are not a Healer/Tank.

They are not the person responsible for keeping the party up and alive. They provide support, they make the rest of the party more effective at what they do. But at the end of the day, if you get downed in a dungeon, it’s no ones fault but your own. (There are exceptions. There are always exceptions.)

These people are not your responsibility.

But, ya know, if you’re not doing anything else important, and someone falls over unconscious, throw a couple protective abilities in that general direction and try and get them up. It’s the sporting thing to do.

Keep in mind that regular transmutation stones (that you get from 100% map completing an area) Will only work on items up to level 79. To get the skin onto a level 80 Hammer, you’d need to obtain Fine transmutation stones somehow (through the cash shop, daily rewards, black lion chests, etc.)

Since the Explore achievement just requires you to go everywhere in Kryta, it’s entirely possible/probable that you’ve missed a jumping puzzle, or a part of the map with no hearts/PoI’s/etc.

If that doesn’t do the trick, I’m not really aware of any other way to check your progress towards that achievement.

Need help in WvW with exp

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: codingCaptor.9428

codingCaptor.9428

EXP in WvW can be gained by:
1. Killing people. EXP here is about the same from killing mobs. A.K.A: Low.
2. Ressing People. Same as ressing people anywhere else. Mid EXP
3. Completing Events.

Events are everywhere, and many of them reward large amounts of EXP. The amount of EXP depends on how hard it is to accomplish said task. Successfully Taking stonemist rewards about 3-4 times the normal event completion reward, whereas killing a doylak rewards about 1/2 normal event completion reward.

It is not uncommon to wander into a supply camp, take it, kill 2 doylaks, and have completed 3 events worth pretty good EXP. Defeating Sentries (The flag guys on the mini-map) are easy, and will flip regularly, and worth good EXP as well.

As a general rule, you’ll want to run with the zerg, but only so much as the zerg is doing events. If your zerg is spawn-camping the enemy team, then you won’t gain EXP very fast at all.

Finding Players for a Guild?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: codingCaptor.9428

codingCaptor.9428

“How do I find active players who would make good officers” You have just asked the biggest/hardest question facing anyone running a guild ever.

From my time as guild Leader (many moons and games ago) You got a couple options.

Method 1: Stratification. What ya want to do is invite everyone and their sister into your guild. Get those numbers up. Advertise in the forums, in LA, everywhere. Invite random newbs in starting areas. Invite everyone you PUG with for dungeons. And then, once those numbers are high, you have a lot of people that you can look at, and pick/choose the good/active ones. Or, more accuratly, kick all the kitten and trolls that you’ve accumulated over time. Basically, the Chaff will sink to the bottom, and the cream will float to the top (if ya don’t mind me mixin’ my metaphors) This is what I see most new guilds or new guild leaders doing to get their guilds off the ground. I HATE THIS METHOD. It works. But it can lead to bad PR for your guild.

Method 2: Fascism. Run PUG dungeons/fractals. A lot. And then start singling out the good people in your PUGs and inviting them to your guild. ANd then get them to do the same. For the first month or so, your guild wont do anything together. You’ll always be split up, so you can pick out the best of the best of the best, and get them in your guild. It’s a long, slow, painful (VERY painful) process. The larger your guild gets, however, the better of an idea this becomes. “PUG-Recruitment Tuesdays!” becomes a great group activity where everyone can sit in voip and talk about how bad/good this group is, see new builds, etc. etc. This is what I’ve always used.

Method 3: In the Navy. Spam recruitment messages, but direct people to a website with some kind of competency test. Very similar to #1, but you have filters in place to get rid of the dumb people. Unfortunately, this will probably also get rid of the veterans who think this is a stupid way to run a guild. Is basically the middle ground between #1 and #2.

It sounds like you want to make something that helps newbies. You can’t do that without people FIRST. Making the guild, and building up the people to make your newbie helping thing happen, is the best idea. Before you actually start trying to help people. Get the manpower, solidify your bases, and THEN have your grand opening.

List of rewards for map completation

The rewards are both random and not random.

You will, every time you complete a zone, recieve 4 items.

3 Transmutation stones (can also a different cash shop item, like a Black lion Key. This is rare)
40 Level Appropriate common Crafting Materials (will sometimes recieve 20 food instead. I’ve also heard of fine crafting mats, but I’ve not verified this)
2 High Rarity Items of appropriate level. These will be the highest rarity item that can be obtained at that level (Greens at 10, Yellows at 30, Exotics at 60) They will be approximatly the highest level of the zone. (So level 60-70 area will give level 68-70 gear)

So if you clear a level 80 zone (Such as Cursed Shore) You could receive a BLKey, 40 Mithril, and 2 level 78-80 Exotics.

What you get is completely random. A warrior may get 2 peices of Healing light armor, for example. And Leather crafting mats. All luck o’ the draw.

The reward for 100% all maps is 2 Gifts of Exploration and a title. There is no other big reward for 100% completion.

You can invite anyone to a party (or guild) From any server. Character names are unique across all servers, so that’s pretty easy.

You won’t be able to see each other unless 1 of 3 conditions are met.

1. Guesting gets finished. A.Net is working on a feature that will allow them to just hop over to your server and you can play together. It’s not done yet.
2. One of your party is in an Overflow server. You can then all right click on his portrait, and join that member. This will allow you to run about the overflow instance and have lots of fun together. Until you leave that map…..
3. One of your party members enters an Instanced map. These include Dungeons, Personal Stories, and Home Instances. Everyone in the group will recieve a screen pop-up prompting them to enter the instance. WARNING: This does not work for Fractals.

If you want to create or join one of these groups, it’s super simple. You type /invite <playername> Or use the party interface at the top-left of the screen.

Thief or Engineer for pvp?

Make both! You don’t have to level characters in sPvP, so you can play around with either of them, deleting and remaking as neccessary. Engineers are apparently good for bunker builds (holding points) while Thieves are good at bursting down squishy enemies.

If you’re talking about WvW however… Thieves are probably the superior option, as bunkering in WvW isn’t as important. Being able to stalemate a 2v1 is all well and good, but it matters not to the 15 enemies coming over that hill.

Northern Shiverpeaks is my server, and Lions Arch is almost always a bouncin’ place where people help each other out, answer questions, etc. etc. If you want to change servers, and you want a server with nice people, well, I’ve never had a problem with the population on our server.

Now, I do have to bring up something: Lower level areas are pretty much devoid of players in general. IT’s not that they are ignoring your question, it’s that there’s probably no one else in the zone to bother answering it.

Although I did see a large heard of people running around kessex hills the other night…. Felt like release week all over again…. But I digress.

Head to Lions Arch and see if what you’ve said still holds true. It’s possible you’re just not in areas where people are. If not… well… Change servers away!!! This game is designed outright to encourage people to work together. If they aren’t working together, then something is wrong and you should scadoodle out of there.

I had a friend run into a similar issue the other night. It looks unlocked, but the game doesn’t actually think it’s unlocked.

Go kill enough things that you’d unlock it, and it should unlock for you. Assuming this is the same issue, of course….

Rune and Sigil Shenanigans

Runestacking: Yes, that works. I currently have an Engineer who can get permanent 9 stacks of might utilizing 2 Runes of Water, 2 runes of Monk, and 2 Runes of Fire (15+15 boon, and 20 might duration.) It appears to add all your duration up, and then multiply it by the base stat. Keep in mind you have a trait line that also increases boon duration!

Sigils granting might: Yep, that gets increased too.

Stack-per-kills: YOu can kill the enemy with any attack, so long as you have a weapon with a stacking sigil on it currently equipped. As a general rule, Sigils don’t care which weapon they’re on, they affect you the player, not the weapon. That being said, effects on the mainhand will take effect before the effects on the offhand. SO if you have 2 stack-per-kill sigils, only the mainhand one will work. How EXACTLY that interplay works is….. very complicated.

Charge Per Kill sigils? Totally not worth it.

As a side note, Keep in mind that you can also use Gemstones and Crests to upgrade your weapons/armor. You can’t use the upgraded gemstones(jewels) But if you’re wanting a glass cannon type character, you can take Ruby Orbs and put them in all of your weapons/armor for added POW/prec/critdam.

I would like to second this. It is needlessly confusing.

CM Exp; Feedback/help request

So, my guild and I (small, 5 person guild) Have been running a fair amount of dungeons. We’ve done most of the story dungeons, Done a couple of runs of CoE, SE, and A LOT of AC. (Don’t ask why it’s such an odd combination.)

The other day I decided I want the CM Medium Gloves for my thief, so we geared up, ate our food, drank our potions, and went back to the mansion to try our hands at Exploreable.

We picked Path 3 (Because “The Butler Did It!”) The first boss killed a few of us during our fight with him, but wasn’t too big of a deal. We’d probably be able to handle him with no casualties at this point. Then there was a corridor full of turret ambushes (annoying, but doable) Then the corridor full of missile turrets (We wiped once before we figured out what to do. My personal favorite encounter in the whole place.) There was another bandit boss who hit really hard, but we dealt with it. Then a trap filled corridor (a lot of those here) With 2 snipers at the end.

This was the start of our serious problems. That encounter was increadibly painful. We eventually made our way down there and dealt with it, but we had a pretty hard time. The traps couldn’t be dodged, we couldn’t discern a pattern, and the bandits kept on shooting/killing us, because we were moving. We basically ran down the hallway at 1 second intervals and managed to get an off-hand pistol thief to blindtank while the rest of us healed up or walked back. Horrible. If there’s a better way to do that segment, I’d like to know.

Then the Nightmare started.

Room full of mobs. 6 normal, 6 Silver Veteran per group. Practically impossible to pull one group without pulling the other. Even when we do, 6 silver bandits were able to wipe our entire party without us being able to focus down a single one. We sneak past them using Shadow Refuge, and get to another room with 2 guys guarding a door. We manage to kill them, but then 4 sharpshooters appear behind us standing on the catwalks, and kill us. We tried chaining Shadow Refuges to get past THAT mess, only to walk into Another room FULL of more bandits.

We tried pulling them slowly and working our way through it. Nope, Dead.
We tried rushing through it throwing caution to the wind. Nope, Dead (Well, 1 thief made it through. But Shadow Refuge OP and everyone else died for it)
We tried carefully avoiding the groups one by one, waiting for cooldowns before sneaking/assassinating key groups. Not even close.

I have no idea what the proper tactic for dealing with this room is. I don’t know what We’re supposed to do.

Our later digging found some posts suggesting that CM was bugged and that bandits had no cooldowns. Not sure if that’s true or not, but it would partially explain why we all got our kitten kicked so hard.

It was incredibly demoralizing, and I was hoping someone might have insight into how to approach this dungeon in a reasonable fashion. Maybe we just picked a bad path, I dunno. It looked like other routes would also go through that room, and I can only imagine it would be just as bad.

Our group has not been so upset/angry/sad by anything. Even non-nerfed AC Lovers caused us this much frustration. (And we rage quit that and vowed never to do it ever again twice.)

TL;DR: CM kicked our kitten and was really demoralizing. It was not fun, and sparked arguments in our normally happy group. It should probably be looked at. Also: Halp!? How do I deal with the giant room full of Bandits?

The source of the Bleed will still be from you (if you hover over the bleed icon) So it will be using your Condition Damage. The Damage dealt is based off of the Condition Damage at the time of application, so if you are using a weapon with no condition damage, and they get a stack of bleed, they will take less damage than if you were using a Condition Damage weapon.

Basically, Clones don’t have stats, they just borrow yours whenever it’s appropriate (With the appropriate damage modifiers, which will generally be low or non-existent)

Salvage Kit differences?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: codingCaptor.9428

codingCaptor.9428

Okay, There’s some wrong/misleading information here, so lets get things straight.

Each Savlage kit has 2 different variables displayed. %Chance for rarer materials, and %Chance to salvage upgrade components.

Now, Every time you salvage something, you’re going to get a crafting mat. Generally Light armor gives Cloth, Medium gives leather, and Heavy gives ore, with Weapons giving wood or ore. Jewelry gives ore as well, btw.

The Tier of crafting material you receive is based on the level of the item. SO salvaging a level 60 piece of light armor gives you Linen, while a level 80 piece of gear gives you Silk.

The % Chance of rarer materials determines the % chance to get the next higher tier of materials. So if you’re doing the level 80 light armor example from above, with a master salvage kit (25% chance of rare mats) you will get Silk most of the time, and occasionally Gossamer. Testing has shown that the % chance isn’t actually at 25%, but it’s far more likely than using a basic or Crude.

The % Chance of Upgrade components simply determines whether you get the Rune/Jewel/Sigil out of the item. Crude has a next to nothing chance of getting the component, while Master has an 80% chance. Black Lions can get them 100% of the time, which is really good when you’re extracting very expensive sigils/runes (Superior runes of divinity, for example.)

Ectoplasms (Which drop from level 68+ Rares/exotics) are thought to also be a part of the “% chance for rarer items” That being said, they drop incredibly often (Average salvage rate with a master kit is .9 Ectos per Rare) I am unaware of anyone doing testing with Ecto salvaging rates with Basic kits. It would not surprise me if it has some effect, but I’ve yet to see anyone provide evidence to this effect. And who can blame them, ectos are ~30 silver a pop, no one wants to make that gamble.

Keep in mind that Exotics will salvage 0-5 ectos, where Rares will salvage 0-3. How many you get has nothing to do with the salvage kit quality. It’s possible how often you get them has to do with kit quality but, as I said, no research as of yet.

TL;DR: Use higher Level kits only on items over level 68, and only if you want to recover the rune, get Tier 6 mats, or get Ectos. Otherwise use a Crude
