Thank you SO MUCH for the answers Mike, that’s the sort of thing all players need – communication, feedback, clarification; not necessarily just silent bug fixes, or upgrades and updates.
Awesome to see you posting here, and +1 to the idea of sticking this thread and making it an AMA about W3 that would be regularly visited and answered by a dev.
we will do everything in our power to reject the PvE guilds that will want to get Surmia, and at the stubborn ones we promise to do everything possible to ruin their game.
We earn our space as WvWvW players, at all costs.
I feel sorry for the folks on RoS already.
Seriously, if you want to make a ‘pure WvWvW server’, and upset the balance again, please at least wreak only one place, not two. Vabbi is enough to accomodate you all, BT hoppers.
e:
A-net killed this server 2 months ago for not closed the transfer.
No – you killed this server by creating a way too strong W3 alliance there and getting it high in the tiers.
Now you’ll transfer over to RoS, bring it high in tiers (not necessarily t1, but still), attract bandwagoners this way again, and then complain you’re full and still outnumbered in your tier.
You should have sticked to Blacktide, drop one or two tiers more until you find the one you can compete in, and play there. A transfer like yours would only make sense if BT fell to t8/t9 and was smashed there, which ain’t an option.
When a lot of W3 guilds left Gunnar’s Hold for Blacktide, GH kept losing in W3 until this very week, when we finally start getting on our feet. You’re just trying to get out of the situation the ‘easy’ way, what will end up in repeating the whole process, wreaking fun and upsetting balance for everyone around, too.
(edited by drkn.3429)
You might be surprised at how many problems that might cause. “Fast cast ground targeting”, for example, is an option you have to turn on under Options, but I regularly see posts from players who can’t figure out why siege weapons won’t work for them. (It’s trying to target their mouse cursor.) If you click on the title line for story steps, meta events, etc., it will hide all of the objectives. You’ll still have the green step title, but it will clear some of the clutter.
Knives can kill people.
We all have sharp knives at our homes.
I understand the need to care about all players, including those who accidentally click everything and think later, but having a tick-able option in the Hero panel, under Personal Story, that would hide it off completely would be awesome indeed.
Default:
[x] Display the Personal Story steps on the main screen interface.
It was nice and balanced. Some guilds decided to move away (talking about all three servers) with no one talking to them. On the other hand, with the new power in t9 rising, the idea of sort of consolidating the low tier servers together comes up again, possibly getting more low tier teams together in one place and then oppose XAOC.
XAOC always seemed a success hungry team, and while there’s nothing particularly wrong with that, they just hit two walls on their way.
The first problem was reaching top1 spot, meaning there’s nothing more to do here, and lots of people leaving out of boredom that comes after fulfilling one’s main goal. Same thing happens to lots of people who finally got their legendaries – a month of ‘grind’ and then they’re gone pretty soon.
Then they had enough leavers from BT (transfers too, but mainly just people leaving the game) to start losing and dropping in tiers, impeding their successes.
Transfering to the lowest server seems the best thing they can do for themselves, as it secures them some rising in tiers, giving them the illussion of success again. I guess we all just have different expectations from the game and seek different things.
The sad part is that the ‘success’ Vabbi is about to witness and experience will not be real and the current Vabbi folks will have a hard time catching up in higher tiers, losing a lot of fun themselves; not to mention the other low tier servers…
The difference in organisation and actual effects when dedicated guilds are present or not is showing. On all sides, GH included, but especially with WSR – [rddt] is the force that carries the server atm, with some sightings of [WAR] and [TEO]. Without Reddit there, the server would organise itself another way, the other guilds would be more prominent, but the way it is now, there are some teams carrying stuff much more than ‘other guilds which mix PvE content with WvW’. Ain’t much different on GH.
I’m mostly an EB player, and all i can say is that all the good fights i’ve seen there so far were mainly comprised and/or lead by folks of the aforementioned guilds. The only strong pushes into our map were mainly carried out by those groups.
RoF = ICON and NP.
WSR = rddt.
Without those folks there’s virtually no opposition in EB and no pressure in our own borderland. All the others seem to cling onto their own map and try to defend it, but then it’s usually pretty chaotic. Hats down for ICON, NP and rddt though, for you guys are worthy opponents.
Abuse the transfers and… transfer lower.
Low tier servers actually make use of defense. All and any upgrades are worth much more, since there are less people to breeze through upgraded keeps. There are no zergs around because… there are not enough people to zerg.
The fights are more tactical. More use of siege machinery. And the fights are actually worth more – staying in the tier, advancing up, not dropping…
Gunnar’s Hold would welcome you, yes.
So far two smaller guilds have fully joined us, and we’re still looking for both single players and whole groups of people who’d like to play in a bit bigger, more developed guild.
We’re open for pretty much everyone – we don’t care about your activity level, in-game experience, toon choice, in-game focus and other silly things. We value people and what they can bring to the guild when they’re there, not how much time they have to play.
We have ~15 people online around noon and ~50 people online in the evenings, up to ~65 on weekends. Everyone representing MM, that is.
19 online at the moment, with guilds teams rolling in AC and the Tixx instance, some chilling in LA, some roaming in W3.
After christmas, we’re pushing our internal organisation, with more nights dedicated to W3 and the less popular PvE activities, like story mode dungeons or low level fractals. We will probably open some of those nights to the whole server, with everyone welcome to join – and not only social events like the Costume Brawl Extravaganza, which will see its redux, but also dungeon nights or achievement hunts.
1. Farm some AC.
2. Get your ele pow/tough/vit gear for PvE.
3. Enjoy your ele in PvE again.
Kill 2 of the three mobs at each torch.
Keep the final mob alive and ‘manage’ it without killing it or dying until everyone else is at the same spot.
Stay close to your torch, ready to hit F any time. Being able to hit F 90% of the time and managing one mob – that’s when you’re ready.
Someone counts down (probably the one at oozes).
Everyone hits F and pops instant blocks/stealths/reflects/distortion/etc right before the remaining mob hits you. The shots aren’t that frequent, they are slow and telegraphed. All mobs are ranged,
So if you’re an ele, kill 2 mobs, keep running left/right with the third one staying really close to the torch, and when everyone’s ready, hit F, then pop staff earth 3 (or just Mist Form – imba ele skill for such things). If you’re a mesmer, get 2-3 illusions up and pop Distortion while channeling the torch, so to speak. If you’re a thief, pop the stealth field utility skill before channeling. If you’re a guardian, pop the third virtue before being hit, or use Retreat for aegis. If you’re a warrior, use Fear Me! to interrupt the shot.
And so on.
More so, the mob at two torches (both oozes, i think) can be stuck between the rock which keeps the torch and the wall, so they stay there and keep shooting at you but keep hitting rocks and never go out from there. Makes it easy for the less organised players and/or professions with less instant control/aegis.
Well, pugging is the social side of rng, isn’t it – you may find people who not only understand the basics, but also can cooperate in more advanced stuff, or you get halfwits who get downed every seven seconds.
So it’s hard to generalise when talking about pugging – if you want to be on the safe side, just run stuff with guildies; even if they’re bad at the beginning, it’s the same people you play with over and over and they have a real chance to improve.
The devs said once or twice that (1) lots of bugs are caused by skipping and (2) they are trying to rework the scripts so that they are not affected by skipping (or at least not that much) but it’s not something easily done and usually only causes new issues.
If something bugs out after skipping, blame yourself now, since it’s known to cause problems. Skipping is a legit tactic, yes, but be ready to see it leading to nasty stuff until the scripts are fixed – which isn’t coming anytime soon.
It’s down to survival mechanisms of toons, but also of specific builds.
Examples – most eles are built around dynamic active survival mechanism, with low hp/armor pools but ways to quickly manage their own hp; ele bunkers in w3 are known for going from 10% to 90% in seconds. They have lots of survival skills, both on weapons and utilities, which are pretty much always there (even d/d, the ‘offensive’ weapon setup, has defensive/mobility skills).
On the other hand, warriors have less tricks in their arsenal – but higher hp/armor pools. They can dish out and take more hits before they need to do something, but if they let their hp to drop down too low, they’ve screwed – possibly not enough ways to manage it and bring it back up.
It’s based on professions, but also on builds, of course – some professions, though, have different inherent and suggested survival ways than others, like thieves making use of stealth to withdraw from fights when they need it rather than overhealing like eles.
Detha bugging if you skip jellies is common knowledge, for weeks now.
It’s pretty easy to comprehend, really.
KnockBACK cc skills (and now fear, too, since it finally doesn’t work through defiant yet is pretty close to the generally least useful knockbacks) are used to tear down defiant stacks. When the boss is clean and can eat next cc, don’t spam the hell out of your skills – wait for a big hit to interrupt or for your mesmer to drop time warp before you knockDOWN the boss.
With the amount of cc most professions can throw, fighting bosses without defiant (or working in any other way) would end up in 2 people cc-locking the boss and 3 others safely dpsing them, leading them to the creation of PvE duo – the glass dpser & the controller.
Kholer can be interrupted just fine. There is a bug, though – you see ‘interrupt’ on your screen even when you drop a cc skill onto a defiant stack.
About coordinating cc in pugs – just ctrl+click the defiant-rending skill before using it, then drop it to avoid hitting with two knockbacks on the last defiant stack.

The cone is about 270*, i’d say. The problem is that people assume it’s smaller.
Skipping is known to cause problems. If you don’t know what you can skip safely and how to do it, just don’t.
Very clever use of otherwise omitted tools up until recently. Gz.
It’s actually a great learning boss.
If you’re a melee, get used to dodging out of – or through – the most painful attacks. It’s telegraphed and slow, there’s no reason you should eat it as a melee warrior, unless you get into a really bad lag or eat the even-slower burrow attack.
If you’re ranged, stay at 1200 range – both screams have roughly 1000 range (even the collapsing ceiling), making it safe as long as the boss doesn’t burrow at you.
There was something found in CM ‘thanks’ to a bug. I’m open on possibility there might be more accessible in AC right now, through whatever means.
Anyway, anyone knows anything in any other dungeon?
You might want to read it again, in relation to the video/spot this time – the prize is not for finding another ‘sandbox’, as you were kind to call it, but something more in the AC unfinished puzzle.
Nah, as that’s something i’ve seen already – but maybe, just maybe, there is something more yet to see without any updates
AC, the Ghost Event:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nb2qWkRlzqs
- the music is there by accident, didn’t know fraps would record youtube from the background, too :p feel free to mute.
AC, jumping puzzle after the bosses:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-oK-yKQHVb8
- 5g prize for anyone who finds anything more out there (before any potential updates :p)
Does anyone know more of such things?

We’re the ones behind the Costume Brawl Extravaganza social event on our server – https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Gunnar-s-Hold-Costume-Brawl-Extravaganza/first#post993980

We held the first Costume Brawl Extravaganza social event on Gunnar’s Hold last night. Was pretty fun, with a follow up afterparty at the keg brawl – first time for some
Hopefully we’ll attract more people with each time we organise it
Gunnar’s Hold is the best place for disheartened folks who are thinking about transferring over to a decent community with strong W3 backbone, but only lacking numbers… yet whistles
Gunnar’s Hold has weekly Balth run event on Wednesdays around 7.30pm GMT. See you there tomorrow.
I have to ask where this information comes from, since its pretty much rubbish.
Several people from two different guilds on UW, as i said, mostly PvE folks but fielded some events in W3 during the matchup with GH.
Ironically we managed to end our last game less than 20k behind Gunnar’s Hold which you’re from while KISS was still on the server, since you came down from the higher tiers that says a lot.
Oh, GH used to be in tier2, back when we had the original INT alliance up and running. This doesn’t mean much, though, as we had more leavers than UW’s total W3 population since then. KISS was far from being ‘the force’ of GH’s W3 as well – they were one of our biggest guilds, but other GH players and KISS had their issues, what was one of the factors of them leaving.
Still, despite your 7+ commanders and organised big scale events over comms, you lost to GH which is already much weaker than it used to be, but has the core dedicated players that learned to work together. That alone tells something.
Sorry if you felt offended by my comment on UW – i passed on impressions from my friends playing on UW, as well as my own from having played against you for a week.
@drkn: Yeah, like Phoenix said the info is rubbish for AG too, I am an active Aurora Glade player and we accept, I repeat, we accept any kinds of players, WvW , PvE, sPvP, you name it, we are trying to make a very healthy and friendly community
An AG player just above you has said that he wouldn’t like any more people joining, i presume it’s especially about folks playing during your primetime.
I talked with AG people, from KISS as well, and heard quite a lot about working with what AG has already, tighting the bonds with the newcomers, doing more organised stuff, and so on, as well as fears of becoming a zergy mass. AG has potential to break up from the low tiers, especially now, but all i heard from some ten-ish AG members i talked with is that the server needs more internal organisation, which is already pretty good, and not really more numbers yet.
Still, Gamble’s post is enough, i guess.
heh. Still bitter.
I’m actually one of those few who never really gave a kitten about who’s leaving and who’s staying, as long as no bad blood is kept between the two sides. I was sure to clean it up with Disaproval before KISS left, and i am one of those who try to focus Gunnarsholdians of fighting a good W3 rather than following any silly feuds against the hoppers.
That said, i’m not the best diplomat as i don’t really care about semantics.
Now, about LoE – i’ve faced you guys en masse three times, i think, maybe four, each time your formation broke down and scattered, with plenty of LoE tags to kill after using Lines of Warding, pulls or simply ganking LoEs into corners (at Vale, for example). We hardly had more people and we’re not really known for proper portal bombing or being quick about setting siege machinery when taking a camp (GH has too many defenders, atm), yet still you guys started running instead of fighting back with everything you had.
I fully understand the idea to retreat and regroup rather than wipe, but it’s something you need to practice – just saying, no bitterness, bragging or any other kitten.
AG has the numbers and has the night/morning coverage. They will rise in tiers for a bit until they face servers with even more numbers and better morning teams.
They are a tough server, working hard, but still far from perfect organisation. KISS, a guild that transfered from GH, is a force to be reckoned, but they are not really known for best attitude, towards their allies as well, and they’re not cooperative enough. LoE, another GH jumper, has been fielding decent numbers lately but they break down and flee much too soon, although that will hopefully change. UNTY and FURY both field formidable forces, but are pretty zergy – unless they outnumber their enemies, they have troubles taking anything; usually they do, though, so no biggie.
AG strives to become the new W3 power and might not welcome not fully W3-oriented and dedicated players too well.
UW doesn’t have that many people – i mean, quite a lot for that tier, and yeah, they are disorganised and mainly so because of lots of small guilds that don’t really cooperate with each other, but they are far from ‘zerg’ server. I have some friends on UW, in 2 guilds – mostly PvE folks but they have organised several W3 outings lately; UW lacks coherence or coordination and is only so-so active during their primetime. There aren’t that many commanders either, making the zergs even less organised.
Piken is probably the best choice out of the three. BOON and Tainted are enough alone to carry the server, and they are backed up by other more or less known but also strong teams. Piken is already quite busy, though, being one of the first targets for most transfers, both those more recent and those a bit earlier.
Each of those servers has its issues, each might be a decent choice – or a total miss.
Just like Gunnar’s Hold, which only lacks numbers at the moment – both during primetime and outside of it – and everyone’s welcome to try it out o/
AG will rise up in tiers until another server has stronger night/morning server coverage, aka pretty soon. The rats who just joined AG will then abandon the ship, seeking glory elsewhere, bringing zergy numbers to the winning side again.
You can lose in t7 because of not enough people in X timezone but people forget that unless you’re the top1 server, you will be beaten yet again because of something, in any tier. Even if AG gets boosted by even more guilds hopping there, at some point – and probably soon – you will be stopped by a yet ‘stronger’ world and stomped just as you were stomped earlier.
So why was this thread unpinned?
Hoping for a change here might be a bit too much, but seriously – W3 is not a ‘never-ending battle’ now, it’s about who has more people across more timezones and can PvDoor. In our current matchup, as the red side, we can get the highest pointgain during evenings or at least get to solid second, despite not owning EB or steamrolling everywhere and being outmanned in 2-3 maps; but then the last veterans log off at 2~3am only to see everything lost at 8~9am. Literally everything – same with the other server, too, with one dominating in the mornings due to more people in more timezones.
GH and AG have a weird way of fighting out feuds since you both seem to prefer targetting our borderlands. GH decided to snipe bay while we were fighting AG then basically gave the keep to AG…
Bay was a diversion meant to keep both AG and RoF away while we took our golems to your garrison, but that attempt went awry due to our mistakes and one lucky defender who spotted us much too soon.
If we were to team up with anyone against the other server, it would be RoF against AG, not the other way around – at least after 1am, when AG seems to wake up while we both drop down in activity.
In regard to the part of KISS staying on GH, i’ve already sent an open invitation to anyone in KISS forums, and i’d love to see the ‘GH-KISS’ to join other guilds rather than keep the old tag, if they are not moving over to AG.
When there were fighters in the field, Ring of Fire led in points and points per tick, followed by Gunnars Hold. When we go to sleep, they come out to cap.
Perhaps this is why those outmanned GH and RoF at odd hours should be fighting AG, and AG only? After all, devs continuously pointed at the option to band up together against the strongest server – whatever ‘strongest’ means at the moment.
It might be time to actually put the devs’ idea of ‘two weaker servers ganging up together to beat the strongest one’ into use ~whistle~
enemies becomes allies, allies becomes enemies … like a real war.
Only traitors and spies are ‘enemies who become allies’ in a real war, if you compare a server to a country, or only those who would sell their own mother if it meant cutting their own losses, if you compare a server to an alliance – you might want to watch your similes.
Great reaction time from AG in their EB keep last night – we got in, we killed the lord, but got trolled with AG repairing the gate and destroying our golems quickly. It was our mistake, though – we should have poured in asap and fight the lord inside rather than allowing him to get out, and then stomp the outnumbered AG defenders. Oh well, you learn something new every day – hats off for how you executed us there.
Also thanks to RoF for hard clashes at Ogrewatch all the time, you kept pouring and stopped only after getting beaten for the nth time, and rerolled to AG leaving us at peace at 3am. This is also where i learned proper countertrebbing and seen where to put a treb at the ogre NPC camp You were really close to breach Ogrewatch, if not for our quick reaction and running supplies like our pants were on fire you’d taken it for sure.
At least we had some payback time last night =)
It’s 10~15 from DSun, and you guys are doing amazing job holding your map, but you also have 1~3 people from several other guilds, summing up to quite a crowd. I really enjoyed the fight for Vale with you on Sunday evening, some crazy ballista positioning from both sides, and while we held the camp for a longer while, at some point we simply got outmanned (with the ‘buff’, too).
I understand your position, though – not enough numbers and timezone coverage for the next tier, but much more than enough of both for this one. After all it’s more about the timezones coverage – we may have more numbers at some point, but then nearly everyone goes off to bed for work in the morning, and we have pretty much no one from 4am onwards until people are back from work.
Anyway, thanks for some back-and-forth fights and a threeway at Ogrewatch in EB yesterday o/
I personally would LOVE to see the AG WvW guilds together with KISS, MARA, MDA, and WvW all together on one server.
Feel free to join Gunnar’s, then, one day – despite falling in WvW tiers, we still have a very strong and active PvE side, and we’ve managed to forge a cooperating community all across the server.
More so, KISS has already tried to transfer away but came back after a week or so, so i doubt they’d be willing to transfer over anywhere – be it AG, WSR or a ‘unique’ server; i guess they’re much too numerous to pull a total transfer off.
Everyone is welcome on GH, both the WvW players as well as your more PvE-oriented guildies, and everyone will be treated with respect and friendship. We’ve already shown we can honor our old opponents and it wouldn’t be any different with anyone joining GH o/

Add Outmanned buff to NPCs.
Add the following effect to Outmanned: “If you are an NPC, you get +x to all stats and +2 levels”.
It will still be easy to PvDoor, but will at least take a bit longer, giving more time to the truly outmanned defenders to respond.
Having fielded over 20 guildies in W3 last night and organised EB liberation on a commander duo, we’re setting our foot in the mass PvP format. We’re also getting into sPvP a bit, although mostly just to do dailies/monthlies… for now.
Just like Gunnar’s Hold, except our pointseekers abandoned GH much earlier. And we’re not the only ones with a very similar history.
Good luck in rebuilding your ranks o/
Ended the Night with some fun in EB & noticed a New commander I haven’t seen before (Some very long name of which I have forgotten )
Yours truly, kind sir. Thanks for the defensive sieges!
The chance of getting a precursor from forge is like that. The chance of getting an exotic drop is like that (even lower). The chance of getting Abyss dye is like that. The chance of landing 2 crit hits in a row is like that.
I could go on like that.
You can buy a precursor off tp. You can get exotics you need from dungeons (no rng). You can buy Abyss if you really want it. You can go for a different build than crits.
And so on.
If you really must get the ascended rings now, then go ahead and farm them.
You can also wait for an update that will make ascended items easier to get all across the game – and such an update is coming.
If you enjoy grinding FotM, do so!
If you don’t, do FotM when you feel like it and then do anything else you find enjoyable at the moment – get into sPvP, play some W3, do dungeons, explore the map, get achievements for jumping puzzles, prepare a guide for the community, fraps videos, organise social events for your server, organise a costume brawl event (you will surely find several people with the witch outfit willing to help you)… and more.
If you find nothing of the above fun or rewarding, it’s time to change the game.
Ditton’s right, actually – there’s loads upon loads to do in the game, even if you’re not into PvP at all. Fractals is just one last addition on top of it, not the new and only thing to do.
Thing is – AC can be done in a duo. Two lv80 people can complete it. If not for defending NPCs, it could be soloed.
As i said – get a full party of undergeared, underleveled toons, by at least 4 levels each. Use exceptional tactics, dodge each hit, coordinate each and every combo field. Fraps it, without cutting anything out.
Until then the point is moot.
And it’s not about ‘caring lowbie vs lv80 idiot’, either.
