I am an extremely defense-minded warrior (and probably should have picked guardian). I am level 80 now (and have a huge gripe about how things should be accessible before then, so it is a sore point). Level 75 to 80 doesn’t take very long at all, even if you’re not trying. I want to contribute and help out, even if I’m not as effective 1-1 as someone fully maxed out. That shouldn’t be strictly necessary.
Ultimately, I wasn’t asking about levelling, build, or gear. If my allies are saying they need more help defending a tower, what can anyone do about it? Nobody’s actually answered that very basic question. Presumably someone can do something, or they wouldn’t ask.
From my point of view, I can’t get inside to help with defenses. I don’t see any waypoints on the map. The enemy clusters (since the term “mobs” is confusing, but I mean player mobs when I say that) around the entrance, so there’s not way in. I feel like I’m missing something very, very basic.
There are definitely good points in this thread, and I’d like to thank people for being respectful — I was dreading a fight.
I’m a little concerned that people seem to care mainly about DPS, and these damage differences are actually really small.
The reason I use whirling axe is not the damage. Maybe I’m mistaken about this, but it seems like anything around me gets locked down while I’m dealing damage, so I don’t take any damage. However, I can still move around. It’s great when the screen is so busy that I can’t even tell where the enemies are and need to reposition. It also damages 5 enemies, but the other abilities handle 3, which is usually enough. I run into a nest of gravelings with whirling axe and won’t take any damage, while locking down those critters. Finally, it builds up adrenaline like crazy. So, in short, you lock down the enemy, while doing some damage and building up adrenaline. It’s a great defensive/control ability, even if it does slightly less damage.
Axe/Mace seems like a solid choice. I tried it once, and I was fine with it, but isn’t crushing blow a bit redundant with cyclone axe? Also, maybe I’m not using tremor effectively. So, while I like axe primary, I don’t see why mace secondary is better than the other choices. At the moment, I don’t have a good mace though (last drop was level 60).
I can also see the argument against hammer in PvE — I switched back after getting some better weapons. It’s a good control weapon, but you don’t really need that much in PvE. That’s true.
Finally, the argument against rifles doesn’t seem to make sense. There are two arguments here. The first argument is that warrior should have 2 melee sets. I agree that melee will do more damage than ranged. I personally either need a ranged weapon or a better healing skill for when I’m low on HP. The only way I would not take a ranged weapon is if I got better at using defiant stance. However, no ranged weapon + healing signet just doesn’t work for me. Unless someone wants to make a better healing suggestion — I am human and thought Prayer to Dwayna did less healing than healing signet on average?
The second issue is rifle versus longbow. I genuinely don’t understand why longbow is preferred over rifle. I understand not having ranged at all (even if it’s not my playstyle), but why longbow? The single target damage is significantly better on rifle than longbow. The single-target issue is the biggest restriction, so I focus on the biggest thing, and it seems good for that. The autoattack builds adrenaline quickly on vulnerable foes — and they should always be vulnerable, and Volley does immense damage, as does the burst skill. The other skills are very situational, I agree, but you can say the same for all weapons.
I guess I like how offhand axe pairs well with rifle. You run into the thick of combat and whirl. If it’s a swarm, you’re locking down and damaging 5 target, and you just need to mop up after that. This works really well against gravelings. In other situations, you might start taking damage afterwards, so you dodge back out and use single-target rifle, but you need to focus on volley, autoattack (making sure the target is vulnerable), and burst — sprinkling in vulnerability or cripple if you happen to need them. (I never use Rifle Butt, since if it’s useful, I want to switch back to melee instead.)
Can someone make an argument for longbow in a situation that isn’t swarming?
Some experimentation suggests that it is my keyboard wearing out…
1. Always be moving before you jump.
2. Many jumps are easier or cannot be done without at least a 25% speed boost.
3. Dodge Jump is an advanced technique where you press V and Space at the same time for your jump, it gets a slight distance boost as well.
4. You can actually jump after you’ve left the platform but you have only 2ms(milliseconds) to hit the space bar or you fall, this also gives a slight distance advantage.Techniques 1,2,4 can be combined with 3 to enhance your jump.
So, I don’t believe dodge jump currently exists. I spent an hour practicing and never saw it once. I fully believe it once existed, but either it did not when I practiced, or my keyboard will not allow it. If I can’t trigger it once in an hour of practice on solid ground, I can’t do it.
Can anyone explain why it doesn’t work for me?
It’s your timing.
Can someone please tell me what the exact, precise timing is? Because what I am doing does not work. Repeating the same thing over and over again will not get it to suddenly work.
Build advice is on a different thread — I was not expecting this to turn into a build topic. My build changes constantly, so it’s not relevant. I’m still learning and experimenting. I also mainly pay attention to advice that gives a reason, rather than telling me to use a particular weapon or skill.
The voice comms advice is useful — I haven’t used any of those services before.

I’m a newbie and have had a hard time getting started. I show up and ask. People scream “NEED MOAR HELP IN SE.” I go there and get killed by the mob outside without getting a chance to help. As far as I can tell, there is no WP inside (or maybe I have never activated it, or does WvWvW even work that way?).
I’m willing to make supply runs and build siege. (Sometimes it lets me build siege and sometimes it doesn’t, and I don’t see why.) I’m not sure how I’m supposed to get past the huge mobs when I die in 2-5 seconds from the horde. That doesn’t seem like helping to me.
Note that I still don’t even have my first rank up.
I’m level 75 and trying to see if I can wrap my head around the opinions here. I’ve read a guide but I’m trying to understand why the conventional wisdom is the exact opposite of what I’ve found so far — guides don’t seem to go into enough detail why. Keep in mind that saying things like “rifles suck” are not going to be helpful to me unless you can explain why longbows are better than rifles. So, I’m looking for explanations why I’m wrong. :-)
My weapon choice has been largely dictated by which weapon I get that is higher level/quality than the others. This has let me switch around a lot and try various weapons.
So, right now I am running hammer/rifle. I’ve also liked axe/axe and sword/axe.
I don’t get greatsword. I don’t see why mobility is a good thing because I usually end up running past my target and missing. Damage is hard to compare when you’re constantly upgrading weapons. I liked hundred blades. Whirlwind attack takes too long to position correctly, or you don’t end up where you want, and you usually go past your targets anyway. Bladetrail takes too long and doesn’t do enough damage. Finally, rush goes way past your enemy and always misses. So, I end up just doing hundred blades and the basic chain.
Longbow I’m not a big fan of either, but it’s okay. Largely, longbow is spread out and rifle is focused. Maybe I just know rifle better and have a better rifle than longbow.
Axe is fun, and you can always reposition yourself after you start whirling. Plus, the enemies seem to stop while they are being hit.
Hammer knocks people down and knocks them back, which is nice and gives you breathing room.
Sword and mace were meh, but I could cope with sword main. Sword had the one mobility skill I used to get closer if things had drifted, but that went to the foe rather than past them.
Shield and warhorn are underwhelming.
Spear works well with multiple close-up enemies underwater and harpoon works at range underwater, but it’s not like you have a choice.
Folding in healing/utility/elite, I haven’t found any I like yet — either warrior or human. I go with healing signet because it seems to give the best healing per second over the long haul, and it’s really only when you have an uninterrupted chain of enemies that you have any problems in PvE. I’m ambivalent about Shake It Off. I think Dolyak Signet maybe is doing something, though it’s hard to tell. Endure Pain can be useful if you are suddenly losing health quickly. For Great Justice seems to last as long as its cooldown, so you can constantly cycle it, when you notice.
I’m trying to get the Eternal Battlegrounds Lowlands (SW) Keep vista point. Near the top, there are a set of radial spokes to jump and stand on. However, I’ve tried it 5 times and always fell short of the first jump. I looked up a youtube video of it. In the video, the character backs up and does a running jump. Does that actually work? How do you do that?
How do you make a profit? Ingredients are usually more expensive than the results, so value seems to go down.
If I ditched crafting now and sold all my materials, would I regret it? Is there something I would want crafting for?
Unfortunately, I have to do this while being attacked.
I’m trying to weigh down two pressure plates with boulders. I grab the boulders, stand on the plate, then press ~, which drops the boulders. However, I’m not triggering the plates.
This is in Provernic Crypts, by the way.
I can’t find it in options. Perhaps it will unlock when I level up?
It’s not on my map. How do I get it to appear? Options?
Argh. I think you answered the wrong question.
I’d like to know how many vistas/points of interest/etc I’ve found (numbers, not icons). I’ve just looked on the map, and I don’t see it there.
Yes, I’m a newbie and just started today. When I find a new vista/etc, I get a little progress bar that fades away. How do I check my completion % after it fades away?
(I’ve checked achievements, but I don’t see it in there.)
