Anet, HoT = Free world transfer?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: ekarat.1085

ekarat.1085

Transfers are already free.

Yes it is 1,800 gems, but that can be earned by transferring gold to gems, costing you nothing but the electric bill for playing the game. They only cost real world money if you choose to make them cost that, it is entirely optional. Similarly, there is no indication that there will be fully free world transfers in the future, aside from those on higher populated servers to move to lower populated servers preceding a WvW tournament.

So set yourself a new goal and start saving your gold.

I’ve talked with other players that have played this game since beta gw2 off and on (myself included) and I’ve never had more than 240g in my bank at one time. I’ve certainly never had more than 500 to 600g collectively over the past few years. I’m not a high school kid that can farm silverwastes 12 runs a day (I have to work and I like to enjoy things in real life, such as spending time with my wife). The only people that could afford the time to farm gold like that are younger people or people that prioritize games (as an adult) more than real life (neither of which am I).

I never said anything about having to farm the gold, just play as you usually do and save. Eventually, you will have the amount you need to transfer into gems.

In your case, I recommend a very easy method through crafting; every day, log in for 5 minutes to make a ‘spool of silk weaving thread’, and turn each one into a ‘bolt of damask’. After you have three of them, make a ‘zojjas berserker inscription’ and sell it for ~55-60 gold.

You will likely have to buy some silk materials to start you off, but once you get started, you will make an income on average of about 30 gold per inscription from this method.

Easy gold, quick gold, no farm.

  • Bolts of Damask make Insignia, not Inscriptions.
  • Inscriptions require Deldrimor Steel Plated Dowels.
  • It is (often — it depends) cheaper to buy those dowels than craft them.
  • Neither Inscriptions nor Insignia have a profit of 30 gold each. It’s more like 3-6, and sometimes not even that much. (Caveat: It varies a bit and depends on factors I’m not going into here.)
  • Each of them takes globs of dark matter, which someone may or may not have an excess of.

TL;DR: I think you are confusing Insignia with Inscriptions. You are taking the sale price of an inscription and subtracting the crafting cost of an insignia. You can’t do that.

Minimum Upbidding

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

A better system would be like how eBay works. Allow the buyer to secretly set the maximum price they’re willing to pay for an item, and have the TP auto-raise your bid if you are out-bid. That would immediately raise the market price to the second-most any single buyer is willing to pay + 1c (until his order is filled and he drops out of the market). Sniping would not be a problem because unlike eBay, nobody knows when a seller is going to sell an item, so you can’t swoop in a few seconds before he sells to raise your bid. I suppose someone could place a bid, see that yours auto-outbid his, and re-place his bid until eventually his bid was higher than yours. But that shouldn’t bother you because the system stopped auto-bidding for you at the amount you set as your maximum – he paid more than you were willing to, plain and simple. It’ll only bother you if you lied about what was the most you were willing to pay.

One more time — the difference between the trading post and eBay is that if you get outbid on eBay, you don’t get the item. Here, you generally do — it just takes longer.

A bid is a buy order. If someone outbids you, your order still stands and will get filled after the person who outbid you gets theirs. It’s more like the stock market (except for the TP tax, which is the biggest difference). Markets are better for large numbers of identical items. Auctions are better for one-of-a-kind items.

(And yes, the min bid botting problem more or less exists on the stock market — it’s called “high-frequency trading”.)

If they are going to just change only one thing about the tp it should be not letting bids below the minimum selling cost of the item (and removing the ones already there).

I’d love to get multiple simultaneous stories, with enough braiding crossovers to make them part of a greater whole. It’d be lovely if there was so much complex narrative that only dedicated lore hounds could experience all of it. Or at least if the world had enough happening to allow for more branching tales, ala S M Stirling’s Emberverse, which he likens to Hyperborea’s conglomeration of cultures.

A woman can dream.

I’m not familiar with the Emberverse, but I otherwise agree with this sentiment. I wish the plot were less focused on a single main threat, but more on several threats of approximately the same magnitude. That allows for more interesting writing as the threats interact.

Does anyone have a link to where the designers discuss their earliest plot ideas for the game? If I recall correctly, there was going to be a plot with demons invading, in addition to the elder dragons, but they later decided to cut that plot and focus on the dragons, but I’d still be happier if someone else knew what I was referring to and could find the link (since I can’t).

Ecto Gambling - Dangers and chances [merged]

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

ekarat.1085

I generally only gamble after I look at the odds. In this case, my interpretation of the wiki is that the dab is a straight-up loss (assuming you have 0 chance at goo-covered objects — not enough data to know if you can or not). The exotic one seems to covert gold to ectos at a rate of 35 silver each — when I tried, I gained ectos and lost gold at a rate of 10 silver lost per ecto gained. The ascended one seems to be a net loss (with ectos valued at 35 silver each) but give you parts for the mystic forge conduit, but at a cost where it is cheaper to buy off the TP (about 70-75 gold per goo-covered object, which is a mystic forge conduit part about 50% of the time). Cheaper yet would be to buy the parts off the TP and forge it yourself.

However, only the most expensive version seems to contribute to the achievement, and if you can sell items from the portal, that may be worth getting.

Is that about the gist of it?

Once you have unlocked the collection, you can complete it anytime — it took me several months to get around to completing it. However, you could only unlock it during Wintersday. I suspect (and this is an uninformed guess) that there will be a way to unlock the collection next Wintersday too. I also suspect that you won’t be able to get it without doing the collection, which is Wintersday themed.

I recently heard that high armor values (and possibly other defensive scores) aggro mobs. Is this true? If so, isn’t it yet another benefit of Zerker gear?

Also, wouldn’t you be able to give people a reason to wear something other than Zerker gear if the opposite were true — mobs aggro by characters with weak armor / defenses? It makes sense that they would attack the squishiest characters first.

The way I see it, Anet deliberately put in lots of tomes that are easy to get, plus some birthday boosters, for vets that want to learn in the mists. Using tomes is a deliberate feature that Anet endorses, and that Anet doesn’t want to force alts into the NPE if they don’t want to.

As someone who started his first character under the NPE, I didn’t find it to be that bad, since the lockouts were brief. Plus, Anet has now dialed back on the lockouts (eg weapon swap from level 15→10).

The only issue I see is with new accounts, and I see that as a niche issue.

Excellent point, Randulf.7614 but let’s take this to it’s illogical conclusion. If for example they continue on to another person, etc. sooner or later they will grow tired of being the only toon standing there. The psychological message is important (assuming they are smart enough to understand it). Abuse and people vanish and that means there is nobody around to bully. It also creates a situation wherein, if their actions warrant reporting then ArenaNET will receive a flood of reports about that individual (irrespective of avatar) and will notice that they are actively engaged in abuse of other people which comes back to the point of my opening comment.

Exactly why you should REPORT them.

Low level more powerful than down scaled

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: ekarat.1085

ekarat.1085

Two responses — one snarky, the other serious.

Snarky:
I will believe that scaling is a problem when lowbies dominate WvW. (Actually, I’m curious what happens if someone tries this.)

Serious:
It sounds like Anet tested this and found that if a level 80 had the same stats as a lowbie, then the level 80 would vastly outperform the lowbie. So, in order to make things more even, they had to have the level 80 have lower stats to compensate for all the advantages they have.

I agree that it’s counterintuitive for the lowbie to have a higher power stat (at the cost of weaker other stats — yes, the lowbie can better approximate a glass cannon because their gear only has 1 stat instead of 3 — we haven’t tried to equalize all stats yet and see how they compare then). However, this ends up giving the desired result.

The comparisons on the blog are artificial — the average lowbie will not have perfect gear, as it’s too much time/effort/money to constantly replace your gear as you level. Similarly, the downscaled character did not use anything that lowbie didn’t have access to — eg no elite.

In short, a twinked-out lowbie can do a better glass cannon than a downleveled 80, so the lowbie will have higher non-crit damage. However, in practice, lowbies don’t feel overpowered and downscaled 80s don’t really feel underpowered now. So, while I recognize that the stat difference seems odd, it is what is necessary to give the end results, and I care more about the end results.

You people have no idea what dumbed downed means or how to apply it. This update increases your actual choices. Less is more with MMO talents. Having a lot of talents just makes it a nightmare to balance, and most of it is false choice anyway. Now ArenaNet can balance each talent directly with only 2 others, rather than dozens of talents at once. If anything this change will increase the diversity of builds since you don’t have so many horrible traits.

This thread is hilariously ironic.

Thank you. I’m glad someone else recognizes this. We may have fewer combinations, but most of those old combinations were not something someone would realistically use. Now we have more interesting choices since more choices are useful.

So, I’m not shocked with the current arrangement. I’m also not shocked that to get a character slot, you have to either spend gems or prepurchase the xpac or upgrade your edition.

It seems crazy to me how they keep drip feeding us one new feature at a time.
Why not tell us how many new zones were going to get and if there are gonna be new dungeons.
At the moment its just looking like a living world update to me.

Which is why we probably shouldn’t pre-order/pre-purchase HoT to begin with. The problem with doing that for any game is that you are buying something without know everything about it. You are making a personal investment and making it more difficult to back out if you change your mind, albeit not impossible.

If for no other reason, we shouldn’t pre-purchase this game or any other game based on principle.

That’s generally the case for preorders (or more recently, Kickstarter).

As an example, look at what happened because of the art with the land spears. If they (hypothetically) said they were thinking of adding them and took them away before release, how would people react?

On the other hand, I think they could stand to either bring back the Collaborative Development Initiative or start something similar in its place.

I don’t get how someone can complain about this and talk about steam sales in the same breath. You buy something on Steam just to have them put it on sale later! What about the people who paid more for it just before the sale? What about people who paid full price at release? Is the sale unfair to them?

This is the same type of thing. Not only that, but the idea of an expansion including the original is an old trick to get new people into the franchise (and I welcome new players). Anet didn’t come up with that trick. Some people have issues with this, and others don’t. I happen not to have a problem with any of this.

I’m sorry, but what do existing players gain from buying the game again?
Plus it was 39€ to buy the core game, which indisputably has way mroe content than the expansion. So you mean it costs more to buy the expac than the core?

Saying i’m disapointed is a huge understatement.
You guys need to realize that riding the hype train is gone. The hype was drowned by 3 months of barely any new content.
If we’re to buy something we already have again, even if its “free”, which COME ON, who are you kidding? We should have something to show for it.
I mean its bad enough with the heroic edition being cheaper and with more content than the pre-purchase of the original game. Now you throw another curve ball.

Not to mention you throw this one up after the AWESOME idea of PET ROCK?

Sales are normal. New customer deals are normal. Giving the base game away with the expansion to new players is just good sense.

What about bundles on steam? Or steam sales? Or any other kind of sale? How about when older games get cheaper? Is that unfair to people who bought it earlier?

This really is perfectly normal and reasonable and commonplace.

Also, I do not believe that they planned to give away the base game all along. I believe they did not yet know what the final deal would be when they had the original sale of the base game for $10.

I bought the core game for $40, just two weeks before it went on sale for $10. I do not feel that I was cheated.

So, you’d be happier if they gave you the same deal you’re getting now, but new players got a worse deal than they are getting now? That’s terrible business sense. You want to give new customers deals so that they have an easier buy-in — that’s much better business sense.

I bought the game for $40, only to have it go on sale for $10 four weeks later, yet I thought it was fair to pay $40 when I did. Such is life.

But its pretty much everything else surrounding this expansion from the announcement yesterday to the very little and poor responses we got from Arenanet since then (+ decision from the past that make the current ones even worse).

Let me start off by this, I expected the price tagg and planned on pre purchasing the game as soon as I could, planned because this is not the case any longer and the price tagg itself has nothing to do with that.

It is however that they decided to go with a bundle that is pretty much a big middle finger to the people that already have the basic game, their long time supportors + the fact that ever since they announced HOT they have been scamming people to buy the original game because “it was needed for HoT” and now they just say “yeah it is in there and you did not have to buy it seperately”, simply ripping off all those people that bought the original these last few months and making the people who got their friends to buy it
look bad too.

The least they could do is make 2 bundels, one if you already have the original and one if you dont. Or discount sell the expansion alone, because lets face it no matter how many times they want to use the BS excuse we made the original free now, it isnt, its calculated in the price like with all marketing stunts and the players that supported their company from the start are being duped by that.

If they just put HoT as a single item, no original GW2 included and put it at 50 the IMO justified outrage would be a lot less, sure some people would still want a character slot, but a lot of people like myself would have gladly paid it, but not now that I see how they chose to deal with it which is giving the middle finger to long time supporters aswell as scamming people who recently bought the game. And unless they automatically refund each and every person automatically nothing will change the fact that Arenanet in my book have changed from a company that I would gladly support to mere frauds because in the end of the day you scammed lots of people (all buyers from of the orignal version starting from the HoT announcement till now ).

Yes you can say contact support, but you know aswell as I that only a minority will and you will still have scammed all those others out of money.

Yeah but what people seem to forget about is that, you have to do more to open current functionality of your toons. Everyone seems to be putting this into a perspective of having to do 65 challenges on ONE toon.

Nah now its all my alts. Having to do the same crap over and over and over again on each one to get the same functionality I currently have.

Then on top of that, I still have to do more for elites as there are 220 hero points after the 400 they give you from leveling.

So if its going down to zero. To fully open a toon I have to do 220 X 9 hero skill challenges? Screw you. 1 toon yeah whatever I would probably do it anyway, but after that WTH?

Something about the math here doesn’t sound right. Either it will take fewer than 220 Hero Points, or a skill challenge will worth more than 1 Hero Point, or there will be a lot more ways to earn Hero Points (hopefully including WvW).

But if it really did take 220 skill challenges per character, I think that would be worthy of complaint. I just think that somehow the situation will not be that bad.

All signs currently point to ArenaNet not caring whether they erode player trust by setting back progress and requiring that we earn it over again.

History also shows that they are not firmly committed to their early statement that WvWers could completely progress their characters without leaving WvW. Some design choices over the last three years have taken steps in that direction, others have taken steps away.

I think they do care, and I am not ready to give up hope that they will have a solution for WvWers other than “get Hero Points in PvE”.

Its going to get even better once HoT comes out. Since based off what was said about the Elite Spec during the Core Spec reveal live stream you are going to need hero points to unlock your elite specs. My best estimate is ~100 hero points (5 Hero points per skill/trait x 12 traits/6 skills/2 skins).

So while you may have an argument about the skill reset taking away progress being unfair you are still going to have to grind the Skill challenges on all your characters.

Just a quick check — do we know for certain that each Skill/Hero Challenge will give only 1 Hero Point? You have a valid point, which is why I suspect ~165 sounds like too many, unless they are a lot more abundant in HoT, there are more ways of getting them, or you get more than 1 Hero Point per Challenge.

This isn’t a progress reset, not exactly. You don’t have to repeat the exact same things to get back to the exact same place, you have to do some different things to get to a new place. Future leveling and gaining of traits and skills will be so much nicer than they’ve been under the NPE/world event trait unlock system that it boggles me people would rather keep the current system rather than invest a little sliver of time in stepping onto the new path.

Ok so lets play this by your games.

Lets add 65 addional SPvP ranks, and an additional 65 WvW ranks along with the 65 Hero challenges to the requirements for unlocking all the skills and traits.

how would you like that?

I think you need to remove the “additional” requirement since it counts past progress. Also, with the effort, it would be more like “have played 65 sPvP matches total on your account ever” and “have reached rank 65 in WvW”.

However, there is a valid point that people who don’t want to do PvE shouldn’t have to do that if they just want to play sPvP or WvW. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought sPvP lets you use skills/traits you haven’t unlocked in PvE (or is that only equipment?). It does seem to leave WvW players out, unless there are enough Hero Challenges on the old + new maps. If they did add enough Hero Challenges to WvW, I’d be fine with that. Alternately, I’d be fine if ranks in WvW gave Hero Points (though there’s the character vs account difference, so that wouldn’t work precisely).

It doesnt. Pop into the mist and note the trait unlock vendor. What you believe that person could be there for?

So, does sPvP let you use skills but not traits that you haven’t unlocked? (I genuinely don’t remember, hence my hedging.) Since the the skill and trait unlock systems are becoming the same system, I would reasonably guess that locked traits would become useable in sPvP after the patch — also, that’s presumably why others on this thread say sPvP isn’t an issue.

Anyway, that’s good to know (and I did say to correct me if I’m wrong), but it doesn’t actually change my point — WvW people shouldn’t need to play PvE to unlock their skills/traits, though I would not consider it unreasonable if they could do everything they needed to in WvW instead of PvE.

People have been asking for trait changes, so here they are. Personally, it would have been enough for me to make unlocks on characters account-wide — if one character has an unlock, then all characters get it unlocked (by deed accomplished to unlock the trait, not the trait itself, since some professions have some small changes in what deed unlocks which trait number).

Whats going on with tiny snowflakes?

15 million snowflakes at 2c each = 3k gold. It’s possible it was done by people very intentionally. However, as someone else pointed out earlier, it’s much faster than the usual drain rate of supply, so it represents a sudden shift, not a gradual workthrough of the backlog.

Given that these changes weren’t in yesterday’s patch notes, does this mean these changes are for a future patch? Would this likely be in 2 weeks?

Can you take your own portals? I’ve never been able to.

So, I keep seeing people use portals in ways that don’t actually work for me or match the description. Specifically:

  • I can’t use my own portals. Yet I’ve seen videos where other people do. Has this feature been removed? Is there some way to take your own portals?
  • The tooltip says you place the entrance first and then the exit. Yet I see people create portals to the end of jumping puzzles, which should only be possible if you create the entrance, do the jumping puzzle in under one minute, then create the exit. Yet, that’s clearly not what’s happening. How do I create portals to the end of jumping puzzles after solving them?

Clearly, I don’t get it. How are people doing these things?
