Gotta agree with the above. The only reason I could find for mantras was as part of my phantasm build, where I ran around spamming mantra of pain and getting 2.6k heals over and over while the phantasms finished off the target.. and even that was pretty meh. I wished I had taken a more useful utility.

So what should we run now in SPvP?

X/d ele is still op. You will still be able to survive against 2-3 average players. You just won’t be able to disengage and then reengage at full hp in the time span of several seconds.

As I read this thread, I was wondering when people were going to mention the fact that we’re reflecting, blinding, and stripping boons!

When I first heard about the Confusion nerf, I was a bit upset as well, but then I remembered, I only used Glamor Confusion to begin with because I like the Glamor skills, and the rest was added bonus. I wasn’t even expecting adding one or two stacks of Confusion to do much anyway.

Blinding and boon stripping do not tag enemies. Neither does shatter if you use it at range as they die before they get to the target. Gs is bugged. Confusion was our best tagging tool by far.

I think the issue is that 2222222222 is neither skill nor is it effective.
So if you manage to catch a 20% hp enemy in the middle of a fight with 6 heartseekers in a row, chances are they’re gonna be rolling their eyes at you/

If you allow the enemy to get away, then you did not control the fight as you thought you did.

Unless it was a rtl ele. Ain’t nobody stopping that until the patch. And even then.. it should be affected by cripple.

Makes sense.
Useless signet gets swiftness in order to buff mesmer speed.
Warrior banners get increased stats to buff warriors in spvp.

Have you experimented with healing mantras in the Inspiration line? 20% phantasm hp, 20% glamour cooldown, remove 1 condition on heal and heal on mantra are all not amazing, but it heals for 2600 and can be spammed if you pair it with the direct damage mantra – mantra of pain. The mantra itself is instant and you don’t have to be facing the target, so it’s a nice handy fire and forget heal + DD while you’re waiting for the phantasms to finish the job. It can also proc air/fire sigils. It also makes our mantra heal the top dog for heals, and makes things like centaur runes be perma swiftness.

We have too many amazing utilities..

I’ve been starting to beat some good x/d eles 1v1 who thought they could take nodes from me with this lately. Getting better with it.

I’ve been finding I don’t need the signet though. Even if the phantasms die.. the recast is ~12 seconds at most. If they die I usually have at least 1 if not 2 off cooldown ready to come out. I’ve been running with decoy (brilliant for getting both phantasms out in stealth or to delay a fight… if you start out with mass invis and bring out the phants, you can decoy during the fight. Very easy 1v1s). I often run with decoy, null field and arcane thievery now. With so many guardians and engis around, thievery is insane. I’ve also used it to steal whirlwind ele stability and return caltrop thief bleeds… very interesting. Only if there are multiple melee (thieves, warriors) on the other team do I swap thievery for blink and use it as a lifesaver.

Who else has been experimenting with weapons?
I’m still using sword/sword + sword/pistol. With 6 seconds on sword #3 and 7 seconds on sword #2 I can’t imagine anything else being more useful whether for invul defense or 3->2 offense. Both pistol and off-hand sword are amazing too (riposte omg, I use this for the daze ALL the time.. and magic bullet) so I don’t know if I’d be okay losing either of them.

My favorite part of this build though, and the reason I can’t go back to shatter… is that when you down an enemy, chances are you have 2-3 illusions up who just did the killing for you. They are not needed anymore since the target is down. Hit F4 and guarantee the stomp. Shatter builds can’t do this as they usually need the illusions for bursting. 2 phantasms and sword 3->2 is usually enough to burst anyone into either into the ground or running away very quickly with all their defensive cooldowns firing.

When you sign up for a tPvP you make a commitment to stick with your team throughout the match.

Disagree sir. I’d say you sign up with the expectation of a fun and fair fight using arenanet’s sophisitcated matchmaking algorithms and rules. If that is delivered, then by all means fight with your team until the end. Close matches are everyone’s favorite, I’m sure. When that is not delivered I think a player has every right to walk away, since it’s not what they expected and certainly not why they are playing this game.

It works alright in a perfect world, but issues like 5v4s, unfair team comps etc can screw it over.
Basically if your team’s average rating is lower than the enemy team’s average rating and you win, then your rating will go up to match it. If you lose it doesn’t matter since they were likely to win anyway. Their rating does not go up and yours does not go down.

Eventually you will catch a break and be fighting people above your rank, and you may have the team mates to pull it off (lol like the matchmaking here works). You will either be carried or pull your weight in order to win. Either way, your rating goes up to match your enemies if you win, and theirs will likely drop since they lost to a low rank player. If you lose your rating won’t change much since they were higher rank. Chances are theirs won’t either.

Now, next game. After last game your rank went up. If you were carried then you’re going to have a bad time. Because your mirror on the other team is genuinely high rated.

If you are sure of your skills , create a premade with skilled players. When you beat an enemy team with a high rating, your own rating will shoot up to match theirs. Next game you will be surrounded by high rank players, but you better be prepared.

You cannot penalize people for leaving until the main reasons for leaving are addressed.
(5v4s, premades vs pugs, afkers etc).

Another cautious issue is being placed in a group with a load of heal spec warriors and signet mesmers. Why should you spend the next 15 mins of your life as a corpse because of a bad team? I think I’d rather auto run into a wall and go do something productive.

Been playing spvp all evening. Had a few 5v4s in a row now. Getting ridiculous.
It’s either 5v4 or a bunch of dps guardians and healing shout warriors vs 2 bunker guards and 3 dps. Whichever side I end up on, it ruins the fun. WTB fair games.

Focus on Self. Realize that you can’t control the 3 other people that you get placed with (lolhemadea4v5joke), and assume that yeah… you probably will go up against a top 50 premade. Don’t be like “solo vs premade GG HurHurdurrrrafk”. Yeah they’ll probably stomp you, and yeah they probably think you’re the WORST PLAYER EVER and would punch you in the face if they ever saw you on the street. (protip a lot of them are actually pretty nice guys so please no BM)

Yeah but the oddly r40 mace warrior and the r50 sword condi ranger on your team skirmishing the whole game while you lose 500:100 are going to sink your rating like a rock when you’re up against a few r20 eles/guards/engis.

There are faults. Major ones. I appreciate your thread though.

Finally, when you’re getting stomped in a 5v4, a premade, or they’re just far better players than the clickers you’re grouped with – I don’t know if I believe that the elo based rating system ignores all the deaths and time spent playing and not managing to do anything useful. I doubt elo is ALL anet use. Better to log out and avoid deaths per hour, kills per hour, caps per hour etc.

Win/loss is completely insignificant if you were outclassed on all your losses, or played above your head in all your wins.

Bit frustrating though when you’re grouped with a bunch of fairly high rated mace warriors against some low rated bunker guards/eles and lose, watching your rating drop like a stone.

If it’s not 5v4s it’s usually 3 mace warriors and a power necro on your team vs a bunch of bunkers. Why would you not log out in this instance?

Games that include the trinity promote bland, formulaic play. This guy is going to hold aggro. That guy is going to heal everyone. Those guys are going to use the same rotation over and over again to bring health bars down. If something new or unexpected happens, it is probably because someone did not do their job properly.

Shade of Aran, Magtheridon, Hydross, Lady Vashj, Kaelthas, Alar and the other nine thousand bosses who weren’t simple tank-n-spanks would also like a moment to laugh at you. In fact the only bosses who were simple tank-n-spanks such as patchwerk were unique due to that fact and used as dps benchmarks.

Trinities allow for interesting combat mechanics.
I have not seen anything noteworthy about gw2 boss mechanics.

The trick for a phantasm mesmer like myself is to wait until he switches out of water attunement, then hit the leap->frenzy with 2-3 phantasms out. If everything times right he should be dead or almost dead, shatter if you need to finish him, and magic bullet/riposte to buy a couple more seconds for phantasm followups if you have to.

All this assumes mist form, eath armor, teleport are all on cooldown, and he’s not quick enough to rtl away. Also assumes he switched from water to fire or air, since earth gave him protection. Also a good idea to hope he switched to fire rather than air since he can just rtl away otherwide. So yeah, basically pray he swapped to the only attunement which doesn’t give him a get-out-of-jail-free card, and pray all his other “lol you can’t kill me” buttons are off cooldown.

That or just yell to your team for support.

On the plus side anyone who is complaining about eles can go ahead and roll an ele themselves. I was defending the tranquility buff vs 3 other players all the way from 400pts until victory the other day as an ele. It’s not that hard.

The pessimist in me is saying that anet will soon add nodes higher than Ori, rendering your new purchase obsolete.

The economist in me is saying that even though $10 might save you a lot of gold/picks over the next X amount of years, you will return more money by saving that $10 for X amount of years and then buying gems -> gold with it. GW2 is already in an inflationary period, chances are gems (or dollars) are a better investment long-term than the axe itself.

If you cannot defeat an ele that spams skills off cooldown, the problem is you.

I don’t recall ever saying that I couldn’t beat a bad ele.

But I think it’s silly that 80%+ of the effectiveness of a d/d ele can be achieved by spamming random attunements/abilities and RTLing to safety.

That top 20%… yeah. Now that’s where I’m likely to end up as a corpse.

People keep saying it’s hard to be a good ele. No it’s not. It’s hard to be an amazing ele, it’s still surprisingly easy to be a good/op ele.

Ignore them, they’re overpowered and are sure to be nerfed. Decent damage, immune to conditions, perma boons, plenty of get out of jail free cards, and to top it all off ride the lightning = immune to cc + escape.
I say this because if anet does not nerf these eles, spvp in gw2 is going to be even more of a laughing stock than it is now. The remnants of their reputation is on the line.

Been using this build a while and love it. Except I use sword/sword + sword/pistol. I don’t see the point taking anything else in my main hand when I have 8 sec cooldown on frenzy. If I wanted to swap to scepter for a block I’d have to wait 10 secs to be able to block/blur again anyway. Also I use centuar runes and mirror heal for plenty of swiftness.

I run with decoy, arcane thievery and blink.
There are a lot of boon engineers, boon eles and bunker guardians around atm… arcane thievery feels SO amazing when you steal 20 stacks of might or a bunch of prot/regen/swiftness. Also helps with our condi weakness.

Each shot of pistol #4 is a 100% chance projectile combo… so if you hit feedback (no global cooldown) right as you spawn the pistol phantasm… boom 8 stacks of confusion. I sometimes swap thievery for this.

In 1v1s I usually open with decoy or our elite invis (phantasm summons do not break stealth OR trigger weapon swap cooldown) and bring out the swordsman. Decoy is preferred because the player often assumes that if there is only 1 mesmer at the start of the fight, then that is the real mesmer. Then swap to pistol (no wpn swap cd incurred) and bring duelist out, followed by a barrage of magic bullet, swap again for sword #4.. 3…2.. not many people recover from those 2 phantasms and 3-4 secs of stuns/immobilizes within the first few seconds of a fight.

Added 1v1 opness… swap in phantasmal defender.
50% less damage taken for you and all your illusions until they kill him.. and he has retal/regen and a cooldown of 24 secs.

I’ve found this build amazing in group fights, but then I am used to playing a thief.
If you play it like a thief… as in skirmishing around the edges, finding weakened players… you can drop them before they even realise they have 2 phantasms pointing at them and a leap/immob/frenzy ready to be hit. The phantasms will live long enough to do what their job was (down the target). Once the target is downed, shatter them with F4 and stomp while invul.
