The races of GW2 -- Elves, dummies!

I think of charr more like gnolls, to the point I even named one Gnoll Steakcutter. Anyone play DDO? The Black Citadel is reminiscent of the Burning City, though a hell of a lot prettier, and the Burning City was a dungeon.

now that you mentioned it, yea, they do look like gnolls.

On the topic at hand, yea, the tropes are there but have been ‘reskinned’ with a few traits changed around to mix it up a bit. Overall I think that’s better than just slapping on an elf race. I’ve never been fond of elves in their typical type anyways (like in warcraft example). I dabbled with elves in Dragon Age because instead of ancient, powerful race we get a race that is enslaved by humans and are like second class citizens.

Also asura and charr are cool. I like playing an asura, though charr is hard to jump around.

I wouldn’t mind items being account bound instead of soulbound to a specific toon. For me, my lvl 80 warrior just got an ascended back piece, so my exotic-plush-quagganized backpiece is stored in my bank. Would be nice if I can pass it to my newly 80 ranger :P

If 10 is the tallest a character can be, and 1 the shortest, I generally aim for 7 or 8, taller than the medium, but shorter than the tallest by a couple of notches.

agree to this. I am surprised though, for all the hassle people complain about too tall toons in JPs, running around in my rather middle height norn, i see a LOT of other norns taller than my toon

Having came to this game some time after my dissapointment of Diablo 3, I have begun to wonder. I sympathize with the OP and kind of share his sentiment. But I really do gotta ask, can somebody explain to me why RNG is a necessity in games? I mean I’m no fan of maniacal grinds, you know, harvesting thousands of X and hundreds of Y and Z just to get something, but at least if you keep at it, you will get it eventually. I don’t know why however, there should be a mechanic that sort of makes you do a grind all the same yet it is possible to not get your goal still.

Honestly it’s because RNG is relatively simple. Yes, you can make a perfect MMORPG that has no gear grind or RNG and takes nothing but pure skill to get anything, but it’s going to take way more dev time and money than anyone is willing to throw at it. RNG is simple and cheap to code and easy to tweak as you go on to produce the desired results.

Well I suppose I can accept that. As long as its not a blatant “coz we want ur $$$$!!!” kind of thing… hehehe

Skipping in Dungeons

3 types of dungeon players

A) been there done that. doing dungeon just for reward/alt exp. experienced to speedrun.

B) wannabe-speedrunners. doing dungeon just for reward. often not experienced enough to skip nor fight their way through. sometimes end up slowing the group.

C) kill all ze things. ruthless killers. sadists in nature. doing dungeon just for more slaughter.

I have to be a “C” . Yes I’ve been on speed runs, and it is faster. Most of the time it is better in terms of rewards/ time spent too. But I for one just love to whack stuff. And I said “Most” of the time because I actually got a precursor (Storm, for meteorlogicus) from a trash mob in Arah p4… which I sold for slightly cheaper price to my guild leader..but hey still more cash than selling regular exotics

Thoughts on the March 26th Patch

Wow so many replies already

I skimmed through some but I can’t be bothered to read ALL, so just to put my two cents worth, and sorry if I’m repeating:

1. Quickness nerf. Some people say it’s a stealth nerf (anyone clarify?), I don’t know, but regardless, my opinion on stealth nerf is bad ethics on part of devs because these kind of things should be announced and not left quietly for players to find out when theyre doing runs or such. but for the actual changes itself, I’m feeling a little let down as I’ve been aggressively levelling a new (melee) ranger toon, who happen to use quickness. Here’s hoping some other aspect of the class will even out this matter.

2. Living Story: Finally a “add-on patch” that I quite enjoy. I did it in a party of 3 (yes i know you can solo but playing together is always more fun ) and it was entertaining. I’m a bit confused as to Rox’s eyes as some people are, but I don’t find it too big an issue (hehe :p ). Braham has cool design and for once I like a norn npc over a char. (I always liked norn as a race, based on the idea and what devs wrote early on about the race, but I always find npc charr or asura to be more interesting, and norn npc always felt more.. flat.. a number of em anyways.)

3. WvW upgrades, havent really done it yet, just followed a zerg for less than an hour but on paper the new concept looks good.

4. WEapon skins (design): I saw some skins on websites, guild ones and molten ones as well as those super pvp ones. Most look cook, molten ones are like improved CoF designs, a bit better but still not my taste. My personal annoyance is greatswords as I’m not a fan at all of big wide, slab-like, Final fantasy-ish square greatswords. Or even most oversized blade ones. Kymswarden and AC greatsword are my favourites so I’m still a little let down at not having more of such greatswords.

5. Weapon skin (acquisition). specifically on the molten skins from BLC. another RNG thing. Really? I despise RNG, to be quite blunt and honest. Maybe because lady luck seems to reaaallly have an issue against me. I hate grind as well, but I’d rather grind something 100 times over and know im making tangible, observable progress towards a goal rather than contantly letting luck be a factor. Not that I am advocating grinds, merely to show how much more contempt I have for RNG/luck based stuff (looking at u as well, mystic toil… err.. forge..). I am just not THAT lucky. :p

I think it is quite true in some ways there is a considerable less of a penalty for mistakes with the downed-state mechanic. And therefore getting people up/healing etc could be considered covering up people’s mistakes, when looked from a certain point.

But to be against that kind of thing, that to me seems more to gratify twitch gamers and really I’m not good at it so I’m always happy when a game is not dependent on twitch, and even more so if twitch players can be countered in some ways by non twitch ppl like myself. However to not veer off the topic so much, I have query: Why must it always be about harsh punishment in games?

Why I've considered leaving GW2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: generalraccoon.3857

generalraccoon.3857

In regards to the title of the post, well I know lore and storytelling can mean A LOt to some people. I for one stopped playing Diablo 3 because of the how the story was, in addition to other factors.

But enjoyable aspects of story and characters are subjective. It works for some, but probably doesn’t for others. OP might expect Tybalt to be wrong in being so goofy, but I personally liked that. For me it’s ok, in fact probably right he seems so considering his missions with players are his first field ops. I don’t fault anyone who disagrees, but I think in such matters we can only go so far as to agreeing to disagree.

Also: Equally some people like Trahearne, most don’t. I don’t fault his ‘rank title’ in the game, merely that he acts as if he is the main character. Why this is an issue to me is because as almost everyone else have said, it’s suppose to be a ‘personal story’, specifically the player character’s story is what the ‘personal’ is meant to refer to. So it feels off that Trahearne goes doing stuff, decides on stuff and all the while we simply play lackey. It’s like, to me at least, watching Star Wars only to see Han solo defeat darth vader. I mean Han Solo is a kitten cool character, but with the story having invested so much focus on Luke… :p

just to add in a few things. I did notice a somewhat of on increase in the chance to get badges in WvW. Two days ago I was running around with 2 guildies for LESS than an hour, mostly trying to get map completion. We followed a few zergs here and there and the entire thing netted me a total of almost 20 badges.

I’ve joined my guild since december or so, and we have regular WvW events every week. But back then when i first started (but already lvl 80 toon) , i remember killing and tagging like.. a bazillion people (exaggeration..yeah :P) and spending like… 3-4 hours there yet only obtained 4 badges.

Did they up the drop rate for badges? Because this is cool. :P But if so then i would say back then the jp would be better way to get badges. But now…. lets kill ppl!

hmm the flavor of responses gravitate more and more to the griefing mind set :P mind you as much as i detest griefing I cannot argue with it because it is in the area for such. I think the devs expect some ppl will be doing this. As for making the design so that one person can counter these campers, I don’t think that will happen (even though I know i will appreciate if it does happen) because the game is largely about team play. So you will need a team to counter them, or a large group to control access to the jp.

Also mentioned, try doing it at right time when not many ppl around. And watch map chat, sometimes ppl warn that there are campers in the jp; i once entered the jp then decided to look at the map chat (a habit brought from my.. paranoid EVE Online days :P )and saw ppl complaining abt some ‘morons killing ppl at top of the jp’ so I wisely left the place. Next time i came back, i had fellow guildies with me, and i got the chest at the top.

Remove the badges from the chest reward if the jp gets removed from a PvP zone.

if theres still chance for precursor, id still do the jp so this mgiht be good. also with this, i’d stop calling the badges as “badges of jumping” because thats how most ppl get most of their badges :P

Hmm.. I got pushed down, ganged up on, and bullied a few times in that jp. It is annoying as hell, but even more so when the people do it near the end of the puzzle. Some of us arent ‘master jumpers’ and we take some time to do this.

Hmm.. I got pushed down, ganged up on, and bullied a few times in that jp. It is annoying as hell, but even more so when the people do it near the end of the puzzle. Some of us arent ‘master jumpers’ and we take some time to do this. However I will note 2 things:
1. As long as its in a WvW area, its likely going to be allowed. Some will say it’s part of the challenge for it. I won’t argue even if I would admit to hating the fact.
2. On my server at least, quite often I find an unspoken truce going on in the jp. There are quite several times we politely ignore other ‘invaders’ and they ignore us, and sometimes we give way so that they can pass first. So its likely just bad luck/timing to stumble on campers there.

Guild Wars 2 Taught Me Something About Myself

That’s quite an interesting read

But no, I don’t think getting through dungeons is about “individually just managed to live by the skin of our teeth”. Maybe it’s just me, or maybe because in my guild we really work well together, but many times i know i owe my survival to one or two of my team mates during dungeon fights (especially at bosses). guardians in particular help keep me alive a lot! in turn, i make sure i can dish out good amount of dps as well as bringing up downed team mates. We usually run with similiar ppl so i guess the advantage there is we can spec our toons more precisely to work with each other, but then it goes to show fights are not just about individuals surviving.

There’s a lot of talk saying gw2 does away with the trinity roles. I prefer to think the trinity is there, just not as obvious perhaps, and not in the same way other MMOs handle it maybe. The key difference is that not any one class/profession is really just for a specific role. Some may perform roles better/easier but all can contribute to a role, if built right.

its probably been said to death, but i really do suggest finding a good guild. its easier to define into a role, if thats what you really like, with a set of people you run with often. added bonus is they could also give u tips on how to be better at specific roles when playing specific class.

Best of luck and Hope you stay in the game :P

Are Patches Creating Fun or Not?

Well for me…

•Nerfs/Buffs – largely has not affected me or my gameplay so I suppose it is mostly ok.
•DR – no comment/opinion because sometimes it works for me and sometimes…not. I am quite neutral on this
•Fractals – I do fractals every now and then, and it is nice place for loot and such but I’m no glutton for punishment… err i mean, uhm.. ‘challenge’ :P, so there’ll be a limit to how far I’d go with this, but so far this seems a good thing.
•Ascended Gear – I want these things but it is also a worry. I’m usually not too keen on ever increasing vertical progressions of item tiers. I hope it will end here. I’d hate to keep on grinding in later pathces for ..what’s the term… ‘best in slot’ gear every now and then. You can say its optional, and probably its true, but it will nag me everytime i think someone with (vertically) better gear doing the same thing I do with the same kind of toon but better…
•The Lost Shores – couldn’t really get in then, also had limited time
•Mad King’s Day- wasn’t around for it.
•Wintersday- while i can say im not too fond of THAT kind of jumping puzzle they had, I enjoyed wintersday enough. Plush Griffon ftw!
•New balancing factors relating to farming, items drops, etc. – In the latest patch, after release I got two rares from mobs quickly… and then.. almost no rares at all… I hear ppl say they’re getting lots and lots of rares but… I don’t really know what to say except… I need ectos. :P
•New balancing towards dungeons- Fun, heard AC was revamped and ppl say its more a challenge now. Notable mention also: Arah path 4… you know… that one lil boss wasnt too fond of previous high dps check/ perfect execution with little to no room for error thing, but thats just me.
•New gem store items- im keeping my plush quaggan!
•Bug fixes – always a good thing
•New sPvP maps – i dont do spvp.
•New WvWvW mechanics – havent experienced it, i will check on this soon
•Banning bots- they say bots ruin economy and all that, so yeah of course this is a good thing! :P
•Updates to how you play the game, dailies monthlies etc.- its good to have choices if sometimes the list available is still a nuisance :P but thats small concern. Also keep monthly off pvp related stuff, and im sure to do it. February was nice and March is looking good.

curious if grfx card change causes these...

I don’t know, maybe because its near the weekends after this one big patch and people are scrambling for the new ascended gears, guild events and living story achievements ( a friend of mine wanted to do the event in wayfarers but could not land even a hit on the enemies because too many people farming those events)/ I’m glad though if its not my graphics card, otherwise i would have to wait a whole month before playing again.

That said, if it is server congestion, hopefully it will return to normal, or otherwise hopefully itd be fixed. For now, I am going to opt to stay away from this game for a few days and check back in game later on.

It’s 10.30+pm server time, here on Ehmry Bay. Almost everywhere I go on three toons from Wayfarer’s, to Lion’s Arch to Queensdale and Bloodtide coast, I’m getting lag spikes every minute or less and eventual disconnects. Since playing the game in November I don’t recall this much of a nuisance and the only thing that changed recently for my hardware is downgraded my GTX 670 to a GTX650 temporarily while warranty to my 670 is being processed (it got busted).

I’m no tech wiz but I dont think graphics card affect game this way. I’ve toned down graphic settings and all, and most of the time things run fairly well. But then after awhile theres serious delays between skill activation and action (about 1-3 seconds). All actions eventually stopped and resumed after several seconds later (as far as more than 10 seconds) in super fast mode. After several of these eventually i got disconnected. Fps wise seems ok and as I said seems more like a connection related issue, but I am asking just incase, to be sure. Is there problems with the recent patch, is it just congested server traffic or is it me?

POLL: Would you like level cap to be raised?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: generalraccoon.3857

generalraccoon.3857

NO.

I always find raising level cap as a lazy way of implementing ways to further a game content. There are probably more meaningful ways to expand game AND enjoyment than making players once again scramble for XP grind. For me, new skills, new mechanics that can alter the way you play, new race (and lore) and new professions (3rd heavy armor class maybe so all 3 types have 3 classes each? :P) that adds to the existing dymanic are better ways for expanding the game than raising level cap.

Additionally, for new players/toons you could add stuff for them too so it isnt too dull being a lowbie. Yeah sure lvl 80 is where most things are but nothing wrong with making the journey there more fun yea? :P

Just chiming in to add that I am also experiencing these lags recently. Granted we had a few changes and upgrades to our wireless LAN coincidentally at the time of the new patch but what’s odd for me is that the other users on the network does not seem to register any difference. I have not experienced this regular lag in game prior to the recent january big patch.

Symptoms include what many here already mentioned but most prominent are skills activating after several seconds delay. I’m not certain if this is a world server related thing, im on ehmry bay, but i have no intention of moving to..less populated servers if thats the case as im quite invested in this one. thanks..

Old guild wars 1 armors...

I’m just curious. I never really played the old Guild Wars 1 that much, but I did play during the Beta, and I loved it. Were it not for financial troubles (unemployed at that time :P ), I’d have happilty gotten myself a box. Anyhow, I loved some of the designs they had back then, and even in Beta it was quite a pursuit of vanity for me.

I saw some screenshots and pictures of the Eye of the north, and having a female warrior norn toon myself, I’d have to say the Deldrimor armor for the hero Jora back then looks really wicked (and sexy).

http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Jora/Armor_gallery

Would be cool if they can have that in game right now. anyone else feel the same? :P
