Noticing the amount of finishers increasing and thought… what would I give my ranger. Unfortunately not exactly liking the ones available, here is an idea: why not a bed of flowers/moss/grass finisher?
It would fit with the ranger because,
(Directly from Anet)
The Ranger is a resilient profession that excels at skirmishing by drawing from nature to support themselves as well as their allies. Alongside their pet, they have some of the best single target and sustained damage that will whittle their opponents down.
drawing from nature to support themselves as well as their allies
A passive, nature oriented finisher would make sense to a ranger and it would also be unique where most others are about displaying power or aggression.

I’ve been trying to get Sword + dagger / Shortbow to work for a while now and what I was really missing was the use of the firetrap and completely throwing out precision all together for vitality.
The build focuses a lot on evading, keeping distance and conditioning the opponent to death.
- Shortbow is used most of the time with a boon removal sigil [nullification] for those pesky might stackers
- When combat gets close or rough Sword/Dagger is a great way to avoid getting hit by skills [even when immobilized] and reopening the field.
– use Monarch’s leap to get out of combat but it needs to be pressed early. If a heal isn’t needed, leap back; people don’t dodge it.
-Never use S/D auto attack unless the target is running away; if they are it’s great damage
- Notice the adventurer’s Rune and Vigorous renewal trait. A 200% vigor bonus on healing gives immediate dodging ability which really comes in handy because people B-line to you when you go to heal.
Short comings is that fights can take a long time against guardians and warriors that have a lot of toughness and healing but with constant poison condition causing 33% reduction in healing it can be done, plus if you do it right keeping away is simple enough.
-getting immobilized sucks still so avoid that -.- however I see that is being changed in a coming patch

Might think I be crazy, but it has worked wonders for me.
I just got the halo moments ago. Though I am happy to have it, I agree it’s too transparent. I would say increase its opaqueness by 30-50%
also with it disappearing… it would be nice if it only disappeared when you logged.

Heirlooms can drop from the Alliance bags. Alliances bags can be gotten via Black Lion chests, and a massive amount of grinding.
Hence, get as much Alliance bags as possible plus some farming = bam, 250 found Heirlooms.
so 36 rubble piles x 2 days = 72 heirlooms from rubble piles
I have 83 heirlooms total at the moment… 11 heir looms out of about 1000 bags that I have opened from 10 runs with ~100 bags each… I must have some rotten luck with bags.
bunker builds…
is it just my server that does this?

my 2 cents for short bow + sword & dagger
the advice that helped me the most is to not be overly aggressive, kite with the bow, let them get close and evade. If they get close and you run out of evades by dodging and bow, switch to sword/dagger and use those. Also there is a trait you can get that replenishes 100% of endurance when using a healing spell which has helped me a lot.
It’s surprising how much damage you can do kiting with a ranger’s poison effects because 33% reduction of healing spells really hurts more than one would think against warriors and guardians.
o o! and just because you are immobilized doesn’t mean you cant use the evading attacks of sword/dagger. Countless times I have been immobilized and the opponent decides to nuke me, but I just use the sword/dagger evading skills and come out mostly untouched. [if only lightning reflexes could have helped instead.]

IIt’s okay to use Sword 3 and Dagger 4 to simply evade things, but nailing that poison is huge. Especially against Warriors, Eles, Guards, and some Thieves. Hornet Sting/Monarch Leap is used primarily as a disengage in dueling and gives you some breathing room to heal and let your mind process what’s going down. Just make sure you drop target before you do your leap.
I see I was playing too aggressively and that I needed to work them as much as they tried to power me down.
The quote above helped a lot especially in times when I get immobilized. Evasions still work during immobilization so I can use 4+5 to come out with no damage. I still wish lighting reflexes removed immobilization though :\
I’m not winning every fight, but its much more success with this insight.
I am trying to play my build above on duel servers… but I keep getting my butt handed to me by every class except thieves who only win if they perma stealth. Are there any videos out there that can tell me how to play S/D ranger?
What’s your current build?
I just put down my traits and skills, didn’t bother putting down armor. What i have now for armor is precision/condition/toughness which is not exactly what I need; you both are mentioning power so, I left it blank.
Edit: What armor set should I be going for though. I went on to do some research and found “aidan’s” armor which has power/precision/condition but I am going to be pretty squishy if I dont go with something that has vitality or toughness

as much as I see people posting about using sword torch, I would really like to keep that evasion from the off hand dagger skill #5.
I’ve been trying to do it myself, but I have been getting my butt handed to me by just about every class… maybe I suck shrug or my build is off.
any build suggestions on traits/gear/strategy for Sword/Dagger?
The arena area in Obsidian Sanctum has some invisible walls or something that is preventing most of my ranged attacks from landing, mainly throwing skills like Bollas and Impale. The arena is very flat; it is very odd that anything can get obstructed there.
If you aren’t able to get into WvW much, you won’t get the rewards. So it is absolutely taking a risk to transfer to a world that has a large WvW population.
soooo I’ve been in Jade Quarry since prelaunch… WvW queues are very long now to where I can’t even get in when I have time to play.
I guess I get to be suffering the consequences of other people transferring too.
WvW gives exp and WvW mode exp. Why doesn’t sPvP do this; give glory and exp? It might bring more people into sPvP… I mean I would play my lower level characters in sPvP if it gave exp because at least I would be rewarded with permanent effects that mean something in the grand scheme of the game and my characters in all other instances.
Today has just been bad for me as well. These last 3 weeks that I have been playing a lot, I have seen a lot of great sportsmanship, but today… yaaaa exact opposite experience to that.
I wonder if reporting players for verbal abuse in game does anything.
yep, I noticed it since pre-release and posted in-game with the bugs function. Sooooo, forum post?
seeing how you have links to previous posts… it might be around for a long while still…
What is the best way to get rid of blind conditions? It seems that a lot of people are running multiple skills that have blinding effects. When running Hammer + Greatsword, a free miss with any of the skills is really not on the menu and has gotten my butt handed too me a couple times lately.
Running in snow and sand as a Charr shows the paw marks appear as if I was running in the all directions other than the one I am going…
The warrior hammer skill Earthshaker can hit everything on level ground or uphill, but it will always miss targets that are on lower elevations. Not in the sense that people dodged it or glancing etc, but the ability hits the air of equal elevation from where your character jumped from whether its down a couple steps on the stairs, into a rutted road, or even from atop a small hill. The cooldown begins but no adrenaline is lost nor damage done.
This bug has been in for a looong time now and I was hoping it would have been fixed, but it hasn’t.
if you read this AN, please just leave a post that you read it and you have relayed it to someone who can fix this frustrating bug.
Firefall. It’s in beta, but its not too hard to get a key.
like always, JQ and SBI playing fair, but the third -insert server- has to bring the hack strategies
like the DOS attacks to JQ’s teamspeak server this last week >.> No one knows yet who did it, but it was lame.
it can be pretty pricy to play in WvWvW. I mean along with buying siege because everyone else is a cheapskate/never drop theirs, the repair bills only make it harder to come out positive.
the argument of “don’t die” is not a good one. Its war, you will die, a lot if you play for points and especially if your commander likes to be on the offensive.
Turn off shadows, they eat a lot of processing power.

its lag
I am also getting rather copious amounts of lag. It can be pretty difficult to kill people with hammer when you realize that your attack you pressed over a second ago never started….
Every class can dodge. Its a counter to every move.
a dodge is not a punish. Tell me how to punish it as the classes I posted above
Heck I can run in to a group of like 30-50 people, drop reflect shield and back peddle my way out…. I’m kind of missing what the point of your thread is??
the point was to inform me on how to stop blade storm with my hammer warrior and shortbow/great sword ranger.
A counter to blade storm is retaliation, a counter to not being hit by a massive dmg ability is to dodge.
is dodging really the only option if I don’t have this skill? that is pretty lame
You could dodge out of the way….just saying.
what I want to happen: I should be able to slam them over the head with my hammer if they get that close.
dodging isnt a proper balance. I mean they jump into a cluster of 10 people and get away for free
So I have been playing a bit of WvWvW and noticed a lot of thieves love to use dagger storm where there are a congregation of enemies. I have to say its very effective but being on the receiving end its rather frustrating that they can jump in and get away. It is frustrating because I have tried all kinds of ways to punish it with my shortbow/greatsword ranger and hammer warrior and I have no positive results with stuns, immobilizes or cripples.
It seems to me that thieves are dagger storming with no consequences. How can I punish them for blatantly jumping into people to dagger storm? They must have some kind of protection but I don’t know what it is since I haven’t checked and now that I am looking for it… I don’t see people dagger storming -.-
you’re right, I’m crazy.
The way the dialogue went, it seemed like i was choosing one of them, but apparently it was just a small quest and they required to choose the other 2, instead of any of the 3…
so I was playing my 2nd character and got to the point in the storyline where you choose an order. Whispers, Priory or Vigil.
My first character, I chose the Priory, and later in the storyline, I chose to learn more about the skritt instead of orge and grawl. I was also wondering about the ogre though, so on my 2nd character I wanted to choose priory again and take that path when it came to it.
Unfortunately, I am unable to choose the Priory on my 2nd character. Am I forced to join one of the other 2?
Are the other orders different to where I won’t get the experience with the orge that I was expecting with the Priory?
Also, what happens if I make a 4th character? There are 3 orders, and if the orders are blocked when they have been chosen already by other characters, what happens when there are no more to choose? (3 orders – 4 characters = not enough orders)
