Nobody uses FGS on the burrows in p3. That’s ridiculous. What you do is get 2 eles, so 4 icebows, then go in teams of two. 2x Ice Storm on the 1st burrow = insta-dea. 2x Ice Storm on the 2nd burrow = insta-dead. Then on the run to the 3rd and 4th burrows at the far end on the room, Ice Storm gets off CD for everyone, so do the same thing. There is no need whatsoever for an FGS. You should have given that ele a good scolding for using FGS where he shouldn’t have, and thus depriving the group of it for the last boss.

I’d literally boot you out my pug group if you scolded me or anyone for using an FGS at the wrong time.

Petty semantics like that are for record runs, for casual or pug runs, pretty much anything goes.

Actually mesmer is easiest until you hit Brie.

Belka is a joke, abom is a joke, Lupi is Lupi, Alphard is a joke.

Brie is … an annoying DPS race.

Soloing Belka and Alpkitten warrior is just extremely tedious. On mesmer I can tab out against Belka and browse the internet while she dies.

where the skips were trivial and the bosses were easy, you’d probably just run 5 ele. extra fgs is better than banners.

So, do you pull aggro from meleers, or is sitting at range “no risk”? You can’t have it both ways.

Sometimes you do, sometimes you don’t. When you don’t it’s just afk’ing, when you do, well you might as well have just gone in melee.

Frankly, I like the ability to pull enemies off of an overwhelmed ally with ranged attacks.

What if you were just in melee and you just rallied them off a mob, res’d them or just killed the boss/mob faster?

Why shouldn’t they? If they are contributing to the fight and not afking in a corner, why shouldn’t they be rewarded?

You do poor damage, pull aggro from melee-ers and don’t support your team. No, they shouldn’t be rewarded for being a complete detriment to the party. Bad play should never be rewarded.

And besides, my post was about introducing more bosses where fighting them in melee is discouraged. Imagine a boss with an aura around them that constantly inflicts three stacks of Bleed/Poison/Torment per second and a heavy hitting melee cleave attack; kiting him and fighting at range would be the safest strategy. Fighting this guy in melee would be tantamount to suicide unless you were ridiculously tanky.

Three stacks of torment/bleed a second and hard hitting cleave attacks? Do you even think these ideas through? That’s not discouraging melee, that’s just flat out preventing it, and there’s no need for that at all. All this would do is encourage five warrior groups starting the fight with berserker’s stance melee then just afk pewpewing with longbows until the stance goes off cooldown (if it lasts that long).

What makes sitting at 1200 “Zero Risk?”

The fact that (unless unlucky) your team eats all of the attacks and aggro while you just chill in the back and dodge every now and then so you can feel like you’re actually doing something.

^ Having enemies that attack frequently or more quickly would also make Confusion much more valuable as a condition in PvE. Something that would make my Confusion-specced Mesmer VERY happy.

Fundamentally, I don’t think that stacking is a bad thing either (although see my note below). What I would like to see, however, is more boss design that requires different tactics apart from stacking.

For example, General Zadarosky(sp?) in SE P3 is an excellent example of where stacking is the intended strategy. Having the players spread out means a greater chance of running into each other’s fire fields and taking damage.

On the other hand, what about a boss that has an unblockable lifesteal attack? The more players stack up, the worse it’ll be because you’re just giving the boss much more healing every attack he lands. In that scenario, players MUST spread out if they want to have any hope of beating him.

Bosses with dangerous auras (like Warden #4 for the Marionette battle) also discourage melee/stacking while giving ranged characters a chance to shine.

Stacking isn’t bad, but let ranged characters also have their time in the spotlight.

Note: I DO think that the FGS single spot tactic is an exploit. It’s making the skill do much damage than it would otherwise normally do, which I feel is not what the designers intended.

Why should characters with basically zero risk sitting at 1,200 range be rewarded?

It doesn’t reduce the effectiveness of boss mechanics. In fact it makes cleaving attacks more potent since it hits the entire party.

In parties without anyone to carry, they stack in corners, don’t know why they’re doing it, wipe and then wonder why they wiped.

That doesn’t actually help the OP at all.

In my limited experience of the troll, it’s a two-piece attack. The first ~10,000 damage hits while hes about to come down, the other piece hits when he lands. You can dodge both hits but you need to time the dodge well.

I’m honestly getting tempted to just record myself stacking and pressing 1 and wiping over and over again just to make a point of the fact that you don’t do that in dungeons. I’m pretty sure 99% of the time it’s four bad players mashing keys and the decent player carrying hard.

Then explain why Runes of the Pack are not a good Rune or as you put it “legit”.
I run 2/0/6/0/6 on my thief with Runes of the Pack for fury up time and synergy with thrill of the crime trait. I know other thieves that do the same. I rune 2/0/6/6/0 on my meditation guardian with pack runes because fury is hard to come by on a med guard unless you want to blow your meds with focused mind to get fury. Potato stated why he runs them on his Mesmer. You can make the case for elementalist not running Zephyr’s boon but needing fury and swiftness in WvW running a roaming spec.
It’s not like we said “Guys, try Rune of Citadel so you can bomb people”. Runes of Pack are “legit” as you put it.

They’re not an alternative to strength runes. Your thread presents them as an alternate to strength runes with the hilariously bad effective power comparison. Strength runes have no comparison besides Hoelbrak, which sits quite rightfully at 5g.

The application of the Rune set and it’s benefits to s/tPvP and WvW builds is known. Saying it’s average because it’s not Strength is silly we are talking WvW and sPvP here not timed dps trials. That’s like saying Pre-Patch don’t run Lyssa because it’s not Scholar.

It’s actually not. Lyssa was used because extra precision was great but the condi-clear on elite was incredible for classes with few cleanses and/or low CD elites. Scholar is just a generic DPS rune you would use either in PvE or some thief gank build in WvW where you want to make someone explode in like a second.

This is pointless anyway the Runes are good for WvW builds poster in here have stated as such and other profession forums agree. Just because it isn’t Strength doesn’t make it bad people trade damage for utility all the time otherwise nobody would run soldier runes, lyssa, hoelbrak, melandru or even traveler/speed. You are basically saying everyone not using strength is being a fool without giving any type of context as to why using pack makes you a fool.

I’m saying it’s not an alternative. And it’s not. It’s just another DPS rune, but it shouldn’t be compared to strength so that people try to “jump on the next strength train” and buy it up, then realising it’s average.

Alot of accusations in your post which can easily be pointed right back at DnT. “Hey buy some Strength Runes before I post this video. You know every time we recommend something the price goes up” example seaweed salad, strength runes, truffle steak, etc…..

I am not saying that is what DnT did because I don’t have some DnT grudge and like Nike watch his stream occasionally, and messaged Grouch for Dekeyz sticky when Nike said Dekeyz deserves a sticky when I mentioned it in his strem. This would be easy to point the finger for Strength and say DnT loaded up prior to Nike’s video.

I’ll just save you the speculation and just tell you up front we speculated on strength runes because we felt they were going to be pretty legit.

Feels like you have some underlying feelings toward us and are using this as a platform to vent. We can talk this out in game and you can vent just PM and I’ll listen so you can move on.

No underlying feelings, it’s just seeing you all make a cheap buck and fools buying it all up, and it’s just sad to watch. A bit how elaborate totems spiked months ago even though there’s like zero demand despite what was already there (which was low – so speculators just inflating it).

To add how do you make gold from s/tPvP by pumping a Rune?

WvW’ers try to apply it to their builds, obviously.

Not gonna bother quoting your book to save space. The benefit you get from Strength runes is the 45% might duration and 7% damage modifier. The damage multiplier doesn’t apply to my phantasms so it is effectively worthless for any build that isn’t shatter.

and what if … you are shatter?

That means I’m getting 4.5 extra seconds of might from mirror blade and 2.25 seconds of might from winds of chaos. That’s borderline worthless. I would rather have 16% crit chance and 65% swiftness uptime over that any day.

so you basically maintain ~6 might from mirror blades yourself and then whatever other sources.

I don’t get why people have this weird fascination with might stacking in pvp. This isn’t CoF P1 speed runs, there is a lot of counter-play to might stacking. a S/D thief will ruin you if stack too much might. Not to mention mesmers can very easily strip or steal it, and necros can corrupt it.

Yeah, we don’t mind hearing about exploits, but we aren’t going to use them ourselves since they’re prohibited in restricted world records (and we only do restricted). Unlike a certain guild which exploits in a pvp tournament.

Obviously I went a entire year and conspired to cause the runes to rise in price. My PSA about fixed and bugged runes was to gain reddit confidence for over a year and then boom one fell swoop I cashed in. Lol.

“Guys look, strength runes are expensive so get these cheap ones instead”. Price spike ensues, unload. That’s like TP flipping 101, mention something which is functionally similar to something which is expensive but have a ton of it yourself so you can unload when everyone scrambles for them. You say as if waiting a year to unload is crazy, but people do it all the time.

And the assumption for strength runes were insanely stupid since who uses strength runes without some sort of way to gain might? You can just run battle sigils – you maintain perma-9 just from in-combat weapon swapping. Then factor in mirror blade and if for whatever reason you used strength sigils as well that’s like perma-16+ might. Two might my backside.

Pack runes are particularly attractive to Mesmers, whose phantasms don’t benefit from might stacks

phantasms do benefit from the base 5.95% critical chance and 175 power from the runes though, and Mesmers always appreciate swiftness.

…and they are affected by the 175 power from strength runes too?

Pack Runes give extremely good raw stats, and give Mesmers 50%+ uptime of two boons they don’t easily get otherwise, and you think that’s weak justification?

The whole point of strength runes is the crazy might uptime which has no comparison. When I said “weak justification” I was on about the completely moronic assumptions made in the reddit post. “two stacks of might” lmfao.

since I’m sure you’re coming from the viewpoint that everyone in PvP has Spotter/Banner of discipline/perma fury and swiftness is useless since it doesn’t increase DPS.
Just go back to 100 Bladesing NPCS and leave PvP to people who know what they’re talking about.

Do you think we haven’t heard that crap from basically every single group we team Q against? Do you think you’re cool or original for saying that?

How about you go back to exploiting signet bugs and losing tournaments. Because you see, we can actually perform well in our game mode without underhanded tactics.

Dodging in this game is probably the biggest flaw of them all. Nothing funny about that.
A free way to neglect any kind of damage every few seconds at any place no matter of character build? Good luck designing any engaging content with this mechanic in game…

There is already engaging content in this game with dodging present.

Did you not play any of the Living Story? I mean how many complaints did you hear that people couldn’t just stack and LoS the Knights or Scarlet’s holograms?
Can you imagine the complaining if you could just all stack in one corner of Scarlet’s airship and auto-attack all the holograms in all phases to victory?

They complained they couldn’t just brain afk Teq, Wurm, Marionette, etc.

People said it was too hard yet all they require is rubbing your two brain cells together. People still complain Teq and Wurm are too hard. People have literally complained about it for months.

I mean this is pretty unique to GW2, being able to glitch out AI by stacking or LoSing the few mobs that can’t be skipped. Imagine a WoW or Rift raid in which all that was necessary was to huddle in a specific corner and press ‘1’ over and over.

Give me an example of stacking glitching the AI.

Now go to Arah, LoS the hunter and crusher behind a corner and “press 1 over and over”. I’ll even do it with you.

One of the most popular temporary content in LS1 was the Queen’s Gauntlet (which is actually set to come back shortly). This was also one of the most challenging content for solo players in the game.

Soloing Arah, soloing bosses or instances at level 79 Fractals, soloing open world bosses/champions. That is challenging content, not the joke’s gauntlet.

The Marionette was another extremely good example of how this can work. I don’t think I saw one complaint on the forums (which is amazing) about not being able to simply stack and LoS their way through to the end. Your ‘average’ player loved it because it required more than just standing stacked in a specific spot to win.

I don’t think you understand how many times this event failed because your average player is terrible and wasn’t willing to do any more than 1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1. The worst bit is we couldn’t even carry, if you got a group of weak players (happened all the time) on a warden it would repeatedly fail.

So I don’t need to be careful of wishing for more varied and challenging encounters, ArenaNet has been adding exactly that since shortly after launch. We just wish for more.

No. You wish for more. I wish for more.

Your average player is incapable of doing it. You literally need a herculean effort by everyone in the map to communicate the strategies every single attempt and then to hope to god that you can get in to a warden with the bad players so you can carry it. Otherwise you’re doomed to fail. The player base can’t handle content outside of pressing 1 against harmless champions in open world.

Lupicus, Mossman, Archdiviner, Svanir Shaman, Champion Ettin, Slave Driver, COE boon golem, etc.

Lupicus drains squishies, Mossman, archdiviner, Ettin, shaman go for the tankiest player, slave driver goes for the highest DPS, coe golem goes for squishies.

- no dedicated healing needed

guess what, it’s because most people don’t like playing healers

- self-sufficient healing for classes

in order to not require a class hardly anyone likes playing

- zero mob AI

incorrect again

- bugging out mobs in corners

need examples

- abusive skills (fgs)

urgently needs fixing

and yet most people still dont do it

If you like dungeons in GW2, you are not a player looking for challenges. You are looking for repetition, a one trick pony for everything.

I like doing them solo or low man. I am looking for challenge.

Come to think of it I can’t think of one example of new content that was added that didn’t at least experiment with stack-busting mechanics. This might be exactly what ArenaNet is planning, hope so.

Your average player will weep a thousand tears and your elite will blaze through it like they always did, always intended and always will.

One day, if you all keep asking for it, ArenaNet will get a “good” anti-stacking mechanic, and while we will mitigate it through superior skill, dodges and other sources, your average player/pug will not be able to get past it. They’ll wipe and wipe and wipe. And then they’ll complain that the game doesn’t let them stack.

Be careful what you wish for.

@maha: Having to CC an enemy so you can wail on them in melee actually sounds pretty fun. It’d be fun going around packing, Devourer, Balilisk and Icedrake Venoms.
I like some actual “fight” in my fights. When dungeons don’t feel like a struggle, when the only question you need to ask in a dungeon is “where do I stand?” the dungeon becomes boring straight out of the gate, and unsatisfying at the end.

It’s not actually fun at all. We literally spammed our CC skills off cooldown then just did standard dps rotations. It’s not interesting, it’s a DPS throttle preventing us from taking weapons and utilities to deal more damage.

If you want actual fights, honestly, just do Fractals. If your pug group isn’t trying to just safe spot everything, there are some pretty legit fights.

One question comes to mind, if all you care about in dungeons is getting the reward at the end as fast as possible, can you really say you love dungeons? From my PoV, you’re just forcing yourself to endure them so you can get your meager restitution at the end, and if that’s the case, if dungeons became too slow to be considered farmable, I assume you’d just find some other way to farm gold quickly.

You have me mistaken if you think I just care about getting the reward asap. I’ve spent hours in pug Arah runs because even though I could blitz away and solo the entire thing I keep to the pace of the pug group. I purely do the dungeons I do for fun, plus some nice loot and gold on the side. It’s why I basically just do Arah and SE, plus COF p1 every now and then (not doing it for months on end then starting to do it again actually makes it kind of refreshing).

If I’m not enjoying myself, I don’t do the dungeon, that’s my rule.

On a side note, I think I heard Coffeemug in that vid.

@maha I really don’t think a game where you just take pure DPS utilities and nothing else because everything else is useless makes a good game. IE, what GW2 is atm apart from a few select cases like 40+ grawl.

Actually I see it as the evolution from being a rookie to an encounter to learning it and being able to take a more offensive setup. I started my solo Lupi practice going dolyak signet, endure pain, signet of fury. Then I took the signet, discipline banner and fury signet. Then I dropped the dolyak signet and went full DPS for great justice, disc banner and fury signet. I also changed from furious speed to using hylek poison. I adapted my rotations to maximise my dps but to give myself just enough damage mitigation when it was needed. A game where there is a skill curve where you can go more DPS the more familiar you are with a fight is good. Try soloing hunter/crusher in Arah too, you might want shake it off, warhorn and/or signet of stamina to get rid of the immobilise, but the more familiar you get with it, the less defensive skills you can take until you just dodge the immobilise arrow, or just time your whirlwind so you do it while immobilised to dodge the crush.

Runes of the Pack > Runes of Strength?

Pack runes are just average runes a bunch of people from good fights stocked up on heavily and then told everyone was good so that they could unload theirs.

You don’t really think everyone in WvW is running Runes of Strength because they are one of the top PvE dps rune sets and work well in sPvP?

Not everyone has perma fury in their WvW builds, we or I posted about pack because they are a good rune set for WvW builds which was in my post on reddit and the profession forums. Thief, Guard, and Mesmer can make good use of Pack in WvW especially roaming. Sure if your running a GS and standing close to mirror blade, running might on shatter strength looks better but if you aren’t and have low crit chance pack is definitely a good option.

I saw the reddit thread and the guy made completely stupid assumptions for both rune sets to give a weak justification for pack runes. Then you all unloaded at the inflated price and made a nice profit.

You see, people recognise your guild name and get taken for suckers, but players with a few more brain cells realised that pack runes are still nothing special.

Running away and having to control the monster would be a good mechanic, for SOME bosses/enemies some of the time.
Yes its annoying, but the enemy is supposed to be trying not to get killed. A well executed running enemy, you get a thrill when you force them to take your burst. The thrill is catching them, and coordinating well enough that you get the best burst possible.
note this is not EVERY boss.

It’s not thrilling.

The reduced dmg from a certain side mechanic gives more depth, because it makes it so the players have to adapt to what the enemy is actually doing. If he is facing you, your goal is to survive, and keep him facing you, so other people can do more dmg, if he turns from you, your goal is to do as much dps as possible.

Lupicus already does this without making the player facing him do zero damage. Your goal is to survive by dodging kicks and swipes while the rest of the party do whatever (until he switches aggro). You don’t need a damage throttle. Other examples – Mossman, archdiviner, svanir shaman in snowblind fractal. Just to reiterate – damage throttles aren’t necessary, and this “person holding aggro needing to survive” already exists.

Stacking is fine in theory, but the enemies play into it way to easily. Stacking can be the optimal condition, but if thats the case the enemies shouldnt ALWAYS allow you to easily maintain your optimal case.

And they don’t. Do FOTM 49 and try to mindlessly stack the shaman in snowblind, mossman, and archdiviner. It honestly just doesn’t work, you need to play it quite defensively with solid reflexes in case they switch aggro and smack you for like 15k damage.

So… you’re saying have to bring different utilities other than DPS ones is a bad thing? I don’t mean to sound rude, but that’s the way I perceived your response to that.

It’s bad because it’s pointless. “I guess I’ll take Throw Bolas and now kill this mob 3 seconds slower” is not a good reason for making me switch utilities.

There’s already mechanics in game to stop stacking, but they either just aren’t strong enough or you can just dodge to avoid them. For example, one of the bosses in SE has an attack where he puts fire AoEs beneath every party member’s feet, but it’s just nowhere near strong enough and the fight inst long enough with full zerkers to stop people just soaking the damage and burn him up.

And now remember that your average player isn’t going to have the DPS to endure the burning because they’re not optimised. People need to stop trying to think of obstacles for optimised teams, because all you’re doing is amplifying the difficulty for pugs and ramping it up to 11 while giving speed runners like a 2 second speed bump with these “anti-stacking mechanics”.

Problems that would be solved:
Stacking in dungeons
People complained about the no-skill tactic of stacking in dungeons. That wouldn’t be possible anymore.

Nope, try again. We will continue to stack.

Once again, people trying to identify a problem that doesn’t exist and offering poor solutions.
