One Time Events: "Life's Not Fair."

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I do believe Mike Obrian said somewhere , I am sure someone will find the exact quote,

that no player will every be discriminated because of where they live in this game and all players have the same equal right to play the game as it is designed.

or something very close to those words. Well the One time event failed in the Bosses on words by totally discriminating against players with certain areas , and this is what we are all so very very upset about. Not only they did this ,knowing in advance, right after the games release but they CHOOSE to ignore it , then to completely rub it in they reward a select group hundreds of dollars of in game content, including themselves as alot of devs posted they played this event, and have basically told us in the affected regions tuff. That is not good enough for a paying customer who has loved and supported their game for up too 7 years.

if you played Guild wars you would know that all events ran for 4 days or over 2 weeks with every player having the opportunity to get the rewards from these events .
Now they want to change events to a 1 time event that punishes half the player base. this is not only a major discrimination on their behalf but from their company’s own boss not what has ever been intended to be part of the game.

But I don’t understand the logic. You don’t want people who have received chests already to get another chest, because it would be unfair. Okay, that is sound. But it already happened. I’ve talked to several people, and they’ve gotten more than just 2 chests. Because it was not considered an exploit, many people ran the event again on overflows on different characters, obtaining multiple chests even before distribution. And some of these people got another chest from the mailing. This is a pretty big disparity already. And how can you be sure that the same mistake won’t happen again? +1 chest value to the people who already had +3 or +4? What in particular did they do to deserve that over the people who couldn’t even log in for hours on end?

And to also add to this the people from the Asia and Oceanic region couldn’t even attempt to log in due to the timing was Monday during school and work hrs so we feel even more ripped of then most on this entire issue. to say it was even close to being a fair event with the rewards over $250. and to time it so 1/2 the player base was unable to attend is down right disrespectful and bias to a select region

oceanic player here. i played on the friday could not complete the quest due to bugs.
played saturdays , same thing bugged
your sunday event was well into my Monday work day and was over when I got home.
all the bugs to the previous days where fixed and over with while I slept

So no chest in mail here and very disappointed with this whole fiasco of an event and like alot of Oceanic players feel very discriminated against by this whole drama.

Would be a nice Idea for you Gaile to jump across into the main discussion forum and respond to the threads that Mike has spoken in or even started but hasn’t even given one answer to any of the complaints that are now raging , not many ppl know this thread is here and probable won’t come looking for it when a Dev has already respond once in that thread and are awaiting some answers.

In Guild Wars you allways took more time then anyone else to respond to this community which I thank you kindly for your time here, your counterparts should take some serous lessons from you in customer relations as you are without doubt the heart and sole of anet for alot of us .

thank you sincerely again Gaile

What A total disaster this event has been from start to finish, Only a few guys in guild got the chest and now alot are really tanked at the situation , and for a guild with over 500 members thats just not good.

Wake up Anet you have a mess of a pr job to do now, think its time for the big boss to get in here and have a look at his communities outrage over the handling of this whole fiasco from start to finish, and I think from everyone’s perspective Mike needs to say something on this and not leave it up to guys that don’t seam to have all the info, thats not fair on them or on us.

Wasn’t able to do the event due to the timing, so not really expecting to get one, but I know a few guys that also didn’t make the event for the same reason and they received one. One guildie now has had 3 chest- 2 from the event and 1 from today’s while other guildies who got dised haven’t received anything yet.Note I am in one of the major guilds , so we are all confused by what is going on

This is looking like a major stufff up all over again and not one comment from staff yet is very poor management for a world wide game that operates 24/7

if you really think logically about it regardless of the slight nerf to drop rates the main reason for big drop is that there are alot less players in zones farming as they are all sitting in LA waiting for a dungeon run.

I would assume that each area would be controlled by a separate drop equation with the loot specific to that area calculated in, so less players interacting with that equation the higher the rate of randomness to drops would occur.

less ppl =less drop rate of a particular loot

more ppl = higher chance of gain said loot

that how I see it, thats when u need to go somewhere alot off ppl are at,
I farm the events in cursed shores and have a pretty good chance of getting at least 1 dye a nite for the 2hrs I am on

Would be good if you could recruit the good guys to tag along to get a waypoint back under control, i know they need a buff to make them a little stronger to counter they risen but it would be good if they allowed players to start an event in one of the free way points to go free the hostile points, might see ppl then tag along to take back the risen controlled areas,. give the events slightly huger rewards then the events that are running smoothly

We want our chance at the event and to have a go at our chance in the rewards for the event, you have driven a big wedge into your Oceanic community.

Mate they did this a long time ago. Now they’ve just exacerbated it.

We’re the minority that ANet doesn’t think is worth the time to read. We’re paying customers also but the reality is I don’t think they can handle the logistical side of an event properly. Highest concurrency is tantamount to having the best times for the servers to fall over and people to whinge and moan they didn’t get to finish the event. I’ve put forth the idea of an Oceanic server since GW1 when I spoke to the ANet mouthpiece of the time, Gaile Gray. I mentioned this to her twice, and both times it’s been fobbed off. I believe it’s a fantastic way to take load off other servers, decrease latency for people in this part of the world and when events are available, they’re on a local server at local times.

The logistics side of things that ANet is worried about is that the server won’t be used, kind of like what happened in the Asian servers in GW before they got merged. I believe right now it’s the Sea of Sorrows which is the unofficial Oceanic server, but it’s still located in NA. As such our pings are way higher than anyone else in the world. When events like the karka come around, it’s almost unplayable from here, if you could get on at all. My info is that people were kicked out once they were d/c’d / culled from servers, and couldn’t get back in. Now what was that about “highest concurrency” again? Take everyone you can until the servers explode?

Summary is this: I think my suggestion bears more thought and deliberation than just “nah we can’t put one down there, it won’t get used…” and never thought of again. The Oceanics will still be around to tell you otherwise.

Totally Agree with you about a Server for us, At least with GW’s we got to play any of the events as they ran for a week or even over the whole weekend without this now one time only crap that really is a discriminating act on us all in this time zone, and you would think that we pay more for there game then 90% of the rest of the world they would at least make it fair on us .

Really does suck to miss out on an event like the lost shores and then to have them rub salt into the wound even more with them rewarding the chest drops that they did is just pathetic , Halloween was just a cinematic so that was ok to deal with but I know alot of Aussie players that have just ditched the game after the way this was handled.

And I can see that this is being ignored totally thinking we will just go away with time, but what’s the bet a One time only thing will happen again for Wintersday and we will miss out on that aswell

It’s not a matter of putting the blurb together, but for the team to investigate what can be done and how it will be done. That said, I came back to my desk to find an email with information on what is being done about the situation.

We have confirmed that we can provide everyone who did not have the opportunity to loot the chest with a reward for their participation. All affected players will receive a reward regardless of whether or not they have contacted Support. We’re working very hard on this, and you should have a reward in your in-game mail early next week.

I hope this alleviates your concerns.

And what of the people you have Alienated from Oceanic time zones?
Are you going to allow them to have a go at the event or is it just going to be ignored?

Well some of us still having the stuff left over from doing the phases, ie the map fragments and soggy bag that Head Researcher Levvi didn’t take from my pack. As to how to prove we were actually at Lost Shores but didn’t complete the event for whatever reason, the only way I guess they could do that is to check and see if we have the waypoints but not the reward bag. Since this turned out to be repeatable for every character if they managed to get on an overflow that hadn’t yet finished it, it would only be fair to those who didn’t exploit that by checking each character to see how far each character had gotten in the phases, those were supposed to be how you qualified to even be able to do the final event, correct?

That doesn’t make sense cause all the events were bug and for most of us oceanic players they were fix while we were sleeping and ohh yeah the next phase was in place before you woke up so was pretty hard to complete. Oh and since the timing was so great of the final nearly all oceanic players missed out. So what ever they do it won’t be fair, that I can see coming from a mile away.

That is such a great neutral answer. Certainly keeps us Oceanic people guessing till the next event huh? :P To be fair I don’t think he couldn’t have answered differently as the real answer will be how they handle their next few events. If I am not even given the chance to participate then I think this is the wrong game to be spending my time on.

I’ve seen it explained in other threads by ANet people that the timing is based on when they have the greatest number of people on. For us in the western pacific, GW2 is really quiet in our prime time, so to be involved in GW2 prime time event we need to wake up extra early.

If they continue to cater to their “greatest number of people” 100% of the time, then 100% of the time they aren’t catering to anyone else. I just wanted to know for certain, from the horse’s mouth, what their plans were for that.

Given that it sounds like 1 time events aren’t being ditched it will be interesting to see what they actually do. As previously mentioned, if I don’t have a reasonable chance to participate not sure I should stay. Also leads me to wonder why they have european based servers in the first place if they aren’t going to use other timezones. :P

Don’t get me wrong: I don’t mind missing events if I really can’t make them. But if almost everyone in my timezone misses an event due to timing that’s a different story.

Yet they knew before the games release date about this event and just iggyed us all in oceanic time zones, so i have asked Please explain? we deserve that much not an answer that is just treating us like dummies that they don’t care about.

E3: How will future events be handled in regards to timing? Oceanic players are upset that the one-time-only events were skewed to arguably unfavorable times for them, and that many didn’t get to participate.
Moving forward we are going to do our best to design events that are accessible to the community as possible. We really should have thought about some of the ramifications of the design of the Karka event in more detail. In short its not something we wanted to happen and we will be rethinking how we do 1 time events moving forward.

We know that this is a topic that’s going to be heavily discussed, and we definitely want as much of your feedback as possible, both positive and negative (so long as it remains constructive and within the guidelines of the rules of conduct). However I would just like to point out that this:
“…fact that it’s the highest concurrence time…”
is contradictory to this:
“why not choose a time where there’s a higher chance for people to choose to attend?”
The reason we chose the times that we did, when concurrency is at its peak, is precisely because it offers us the highest chance for the largest number of people to attend. By definition though, because concurrency rises and falls, that means it’s impossible for us to choose a time that offers us a chance for everyone to attend.
Offering events like this at multiple times for different time zones is certainly worth considering, but given our team’s goals and the timeline we had to operate in (we fielded our team immediately after shipping the Live game), it just wasn’t feasible for us to consider such an option for this particular event.
Having said that, this decision is something that we realized would not make everyone happy. Keep in mind that there is a tremendous lineup of content to choose from during the weekend and after, with both the island and the Fractals dungeon remaining active, and we will continue to listen to both criticisms and compliments about these special events in order to continually improve your playing experience.

So explain why you still went ahead with the event the way you did knowing this in advance especial given the reward for this event were so far added to $250. worth of in game stuff that , 1/2 your player base could not even have the chance of getting cause they were forbidden by Anet because of the timing?

We want our chance at the event and to have a go at our chance in the rewards for the event, you have driven a big wedge into your Oceanic community.

We do need a proper answer from either you or Mike since the offical stance is

We feel that everyone should have the ability to contribute no matter what time of the day it is. How we’ve came to this conclusion is that no player’s time is more valuable than another. Everyone has different off peak hours for whatever reason. Players should not be punished or unable to experience and view the same content as everyone else because they play at a different time. They too are paying customers.

So Please a decent answer would be nice

But the meeting isn’t what it seams as question have been asked 4 times now to be added about the event timing on Oceanic’s behalf yet the opp won’t have it as a question so the AMA is already seaming to be a fix.

The side note I understand your point of view however most of us had all ready been at work for hrs before the launch , We want the chance to play as it was intended and have our chance at the chest, if they cannot accommodate this then they have failed in there promise not to disadvantage anyone in game on the principal of where they live.
due to the excessive reward given they need to compensate everyone in some way = to what they dished out or allow us to play and have a chance.

As for your hoilday when did that start? as an Aussie I have no idea about Thanksgiving timing by FB its today , however it has been 5 days and no reply? that a little too long in my mind for a company not to give something after the mess that was

Well looks like so far 4 ppl have put in this question to be answered but the op doesn’t want to address it in the questions, so yes here it is again..

Will Anet be doing anything to address the Oceanic players grief over the Lost shores timing and the discrimination that is felt due to this, given you knew in advance that this would create grief and unrest within the community yet did nothing to fix it or compensate those ppl that could not attend due to your bias setting of the timing of the event?

So now lets see if the op ,that so far has refused to add this sort of question, is legit about his AMA or it a PR stunt by Anet and they will refuse again to address this sort of complaint

So really am amazed that anet goes on holidays and won’t address our complains from an Oceanic perspective this is just disrespectful

Ok if this is the level we’ve fallen to on the forums then, wow, quite frankly.

But to address the rest of your post, there will be an AMA meeting next Monday that will hopefully answer these questions that you might have.

But honestly, you need to chill out and let them have a holiday without some forum-based guilt, else you come off as a little bit insane. They are not the forum’s personal slaves, they are people who work hard and make mistakes like we all do.

wow an AMA meeting scheduled for gee lets see 7am my time Tuesday morning, and for some its 4am , other in my region 10 am so how you figure we could make time when we would either be at work, school or sleeping?.

let them have a holiday you say , I say no we were complaing about the schedule since it was realised with no respectful answer given then the one I posted up.

Point 1-They knew since game release that their decision would affect half their player base due to the timing of the event, yet did nothing to address this

Point 2- They stated that no player would ever be discriminated against with content because of where they live, yet they did so

Point 3-They then gave out up too $250.00 worth of in game stuff, driving a wedge in the community, by all accounts this is totally bias to all players whom could not make the event because of point 1

Point 4- You would find that a multi national company as such as Anet, Don’t get Holidays its bad for business, so there is someone there to answer complaints, And its been 5 days now in still no word , That is , very rude, to treat your paying customers in that way.

Point 5- They need to show they are addressing the complaints in a professional manner, instead we have seen they lock threads delete posts and temp bad some ppl. Due to the legality of what they have done their lawyers should be addressing the fact they they have opened them selves up to a mass lawsuit in some country’s ,

Point 6- Love the new map the designers have done an incredible job, the new foe are hard has nails and are so fun to test your ability against, Job Done amazingly congrats.

Point 7- the new dungeon seams to be great from what mates have said , haven’t had the time to do it yet looking forward to it, so will give feedback on that when I do

Point 8 the discussion over the new Gear is to me a bit of a joke. In guild wars we had elite players that would run UW sc, DOA sc, why cause they could and they would try and better the next crew that put up a time. Not to mention the elite mini’s ,ectos and so forth that went with these guys. So by Anet introducing this new class of Gear they have given these types of player something to do.They would be like kidds at xmas at having an area to work on to gain something elite that normal players would find hard to get. Leave them too it because they are that nuts that they will do it over and over again till they get that “OH LOOK AT ME”

Point 9- For all those in the USA have a safe thanksgiving’s

guess you guys are sleeping thinking what a great job.

the new map I will give the design team a big clap, looks great what I have seen.

the event, now you need to get damage control out it is one big fail to your community.
1.. if I was you ,remove the nice screen shots taken by your employee before the mob gets even more ferial, cause it shows a lack of respect for this community that have issues with the event yet your team got to play it?
2.. get the boss up and get him in here and read how upset your customers are, either they are pissed at being dised in the last few mins and not getting there rewards or they are like me feeling totally discriminated against because of where I live.

3. get a sticky up with a some what where sryy and working on it and address the now bs that you have cause by making an elite group within the game with one off special items, remeber Pandas and Kanza minis???

love the game and the hard work that the design team are doing and have done, now show this community that the bosses can deliver as good as their team has done.

So looking at all the drama, with the event seams like Anet should have listened to us about making the event into an Instance to stop all the drama.

We have been told to deal with not getting the main event on Sunday/ Monday and enjoy the other content throughout the weekend, but none seams to be enjoying standing around bugged npc’s to advance the story line.

So lets get it all in a nut shell.

No main event (deal with it)

Enjoy the other content ( can’t all bugged)

No rewards cause we can’t make the events

Select few getting rewards creating another bunch of elitism players favoured by Anet.

So can we get a soulotion ?

Take the week or 2 weeks to fix all the bugs.

Make events an instance playable only once per account to eliminate the lag

And finally give every players account ,only once, the rewards to the event’s and 2 of the new chests for the drama.

Oh and please consider an Oceanic Server Please please , so we can take some of the load out of the other servers, we seamed to not have as much drama in Guild Wars events due to the spread over the servers.

So there is going to be no chance that you will make this event into an Instance like our story mode so we in the Asia/ Pacific region can enjoy the event and gain the rewards which are for this event?

Just like Halloween finale where we here in Australia missed that as well due too your One Time event timing policy , it really needs to be addressed and given, since the announcement of the event, we have been voicing our complaint I think its a little to poor on the eve of the event to say srry deal with it.

I hope you can understand that we are very unhappy, In Guild Wars there was never this problem with events running for 4 days or up to a week allowing every player world wide to benefit from the content. Now for some reason you have decided that in gw2 from the start, with this being the 2nd event content added, that it is ok to have players at a disadvantage from playing the game the way in which it is intended .

Surley it wouldnt be hard to make the event an Instance, that ppl could enter once only and enjoy the event and get the rewards that go with it. Now we will have another elite class of players that have gained rewards form an event that 1/3-1/2 of the players can never get unless they pay for them.So heres hoping any reward is a scrap of cloth and not something super uber rair(ohh wait it will be cause we won’t get to play)

The one time event, and how i'm not gonna be in it

I think you might all be missing where he is from, In Australia , NZ and the other parts of the Asia pacific the finnal event is 7Am Monday , so yeah we do have a gripe about missing the event and with just cause.

So now we know for sure that , cause we are in a different time zone and will miss out of the finale we miss out on one time rewards that go with it, gees this is a great business thinking on Anets part , who cares about Asia Pacific region, just cause they pay more for our game we won’t accommodate their time zone in any of our events or even let them have servers

They managed to run gw events over a time frame, so as many ppl as possible could play and enjoy.
Now most of us players in Aus,NZ and Asia pacific, won’t get to play the event like it was intended due to the timing.
WE don’t want to watch youtube, we want to play the content as we should be able too , without being discriminated against because of were we live.
Thats all we are trying to get an answer on , yet I see we are being ignored bye Anet on the subject.

the Main Event starts on Monday morning Australian time, that is what we are raising our complaint about, most of us will either be at work or the kidds will be heading to school, This is the constant programming we would like changed so that we call all enjoy the game to the fullest without being discriminated against cause of where we live.

The black lion keys are a huge fail by Anet, give us back the old lockpicks from merchants for 1 silver as they are not worth the gems to open. here is hoping they will organise something soon

I see that Anet dosn’t want to address the concern that half there player base won’t be able to enjoy their event in its fullest. Don’t see why they can’t make it that you can set off the event chain once per account like you do in the story instance’s .

Hopefull they can see our concern’s and are working on it before the date.

If you ppl in the usa actually realize that here in Australia we get riped to the hilt by gaming companies constantly, We pay alot more for games even with our dollar being equal or better then yours, so why can’t we have equality in the game .
Sure time zones are effectively set for peak usage but really have a look at how many Aussie and Asian players there are, and to say just deal with it shows just how immature you are, when you grow up and get a job , see if your boss would then let you have time off for an event.

Why cannot Anet just make it so a player can have the opportunity to to do the event chain once per account, which would make it fair for everyone world wide to enjoy this great game to its fullest, without all the privileges going to a select few.

With everyone complaining about this cost, which I agree is a joke, maybe a solution to this is allow players to purchase , from the merchant in towns, a beacon that allows players in a team to spawn at the location that the beacon is placed .

This would allow players if they teamed up with their guild mates to port into the area free and join there team mates for the event, dungon , or just to run around with for some fun.
