Why GW2 just isn't working

I’m gonna reply with the same reply I give to people who are extremely unhappy about the game but give unrealistic suggestions: If you’re that distraught and the game makes you upset, then why are you still playing?

I for one enjoy GW2 VERY much. I try to branch out to all areas of the game, sPVP, WvW, PvE, Fractals, World Bosses, Guild Missions. And I have a BLAST. Part of what made GW1 so great was the story. And GW2 is finally building on that aspect. That is the only area where I felt something was missing in GW2 at launch. But now that they’re adding depth and breadth to the game’s story, I think GW2 is coming into its own. If you don’t want to be along for the ride, then… don’t.

I understand and agree with what you are saying, but I think it is more than just the story that is lacking in GW2. I think it is the connection to more than just a few NPC’s.

We had so much connection with Cynn, Mhenlo, Koss, Vekk, and many, many other NPC’s. Yes through the story they became characters we felt for. Other than the three order mentors, I don’t get that feeling from any of the GW2 NPC allies. I realize they are trying to build a connection with the DE2 NPC’s, but none of them have the same depth that the GW1 characters had IMO.

I think not only the story and it’s superb telling gave us connection to the game, but it’s very interesting characters did as well.

One thing I will also add. There was a lot more in GW1 than just killing things required to complete missions. Sure dungeons have some puzzles, etc. But most ‘missions’ here are just kill ’em and complete.

There is definitely truth to all of that. I guess I’ve had a different experience. I’ve tried not to take the game in all at once while I play through it and have had time to reflect on characters and develop them further in my head a little. Keil, Mai Trin, Destiny’s Edge (especially Caithe), Queen Jennah, Trahearne, have all made an impact on me and I genuinely care what happens to them.

I CAN say in support of your viewpoint, I do miss the connection/mystery around Gwen from GW1. Honestly I’ve never experienced a mystery in a video game that I was enamored by more than hers. All the way through the GWEN expansion, I would occasionally think back to her presence in the Pre-Searing and wonder just what happened to her. I want a connection like THAT in GW2 for sure.

As far as missions go, I think they’re attempting to take things in that direction in Dry Top/Maguuma. The Zephyr crystals vs. the Inquest, Tootsie, Rescue the Zephyrites, and Nochtil are all fairly unique iterations on events. Yes, they’re about killing things half the time but the fact that Anet is moving (at least slightly) away from just pew pew and win style quests is a positive sign to me. Hopefully as we move into other zones closer to Mordremoth, we’ll start getting even more quests that are interesting/fun to complete.

Mesmer Poll: Scepter Auto-Attack Torment

in Mesmer

Posted by: redux.1502

redux.1502

No. I think they should add a longer duration (say, 5 seconds) torment to the first attack in the chain, and leave the second attack without a condition. That way, clones will stack the torment, but not excessively so.

Another thing they could do is to change Scepter 2 to NOT apply conditions, increase the block duration to be similar to the old Mimic (say 1-2 seconds of blocking all attacks), and decrease channel time on Scepter 3 in order to provide a more reliable application of Confusion/conditions, while moving torment onto the first attack in Scepter 1 chain (while slightly increasing attack speed or damage). I think that would make the scepter a lot more viable, versatile, and useful outside of just PvP.

Thank you Anet

I’m sure Anet will balance the clone/torment capabilities on Scepter if it becomes too powerful. But I agree 100%, I was SO happy reading the notes. Let’s hope they deliver!

“Mind Stab: Increased damage by 17%. Increased radius to 240.”

What do you guys think of this change? I’m personally very satisfied with this upcoming patch if everything stays because it will be a HUGE boon to our AoE capabilities. This along with Mantra of Pain, Illusionary Elasticity, and the fix to iWarden will hopefully make tagging things a lot easier. Are you guys satisfied with how they fixed Mind Stab? I was personally hoping they might add a blast finisher, but this seems pretty legitimate too.

Also woo! for iLeap!

Wait SAB isn’t coming back ever??
I never got to play during SAB or the Back to School event!
That was the one thing (outside the LS) that I was extremely excited to finally play someday. On top of the skins, I just wanted to experience it…
PLEASE bring SAB back Anet.

No one said SAB is never coming back. Thats just people taking what was said to the extreme. What was said in the interview is something like: we dont see SAB fitting in the living story and we’re very focused on ensuring the quality of the LS right now so I dont see SAB being part of a living story release What he probably meant is SAB would be released in between Living story releases or perhaps during breaks like the feature as opposed to being released back to back with a living story update like it happened last time.

Okay phew thanks for clarifying!

Caveats/Side-effects in GW2

I miss this type of gameplay from GW1 TERRIBLY on the Mesmer. For example:
Signet of Midnight
Blackout
Psychic Distraction

Honestly, those types of skills and the ability to provide SKILLFUL counters to an enemy team (by locking down a Monk or Ritualist or a high priority target while the rest of the team spiked) were some of my favorite gaming moments. When I did well as a Mesmer, I felt truly satisfied with a job well done and like I had accomplished something tangible for my team.

Dungeon/Fractal Necro? Or is it Horrible?

in Necromancer

I’m looking at making my first Sylvari character after getting Thief, Mes, Engi, and Ele all to 80 to gear out for Fractals/Dungeons. And I really can’t decide on the next class to make. Ranger is just boring to me, Warrior too simple, Guardian too tanky, and then there’s Necro (which I hear is horrible for the PvE environment).

I’m very much into mobility and offensive utility (blinds, chill, immob, etc.) ankitten ot sure if I’ll find the Necro useful in those regards for PvE. Note: I mostly do casual runs with pick up groups and don’t really care for trying to maximize DPS all that much.

Are there ways to build a Necro that would work in PvE that way? And if so, do you recommend Necro for what I want to do or one of the other three classes I haven’t made yet?

7. Ranger: I despise pet classes, and really just don’t like anything the Ranger has to offer besides mainland Sword. And even then, that weapon isn’t for everybody. I guess spirits are cool? Not very fun in group play (with little to offer in dungeons).

-Juxt

Not to troll, but I think its ironic that you hate ranger for being a pet class, but like mesmer… which is even worse of a pet class imo, although prettier and more graceful doing it?

And ranger offers plenty in dungeons. After the next patch it’ll have roughly 10% more DPS, and everyone loves a good frostspotter. Plus everyone always forgets about axe 5, which is a handy extra reflect in situations where 100% reflect uptime is needed.

But I don’t really classify clones/phantasms as pets for the Mesmer in this game. If you ever played WoW, I just think of them like Shadow Orbs for Shadow Priests. Charges that can be useful, but are mostly (by me) used to power up/activate certain key abilities.

Hey fellow Mesmers! I was just looking at my alts (deleted a few because I realized I disliked the profession) and was wondering what you would rank each of the other professions at based on FUN FACTOR only. I’m just intrigued to find out why you like or dislike professions (Mesmer included).

I’ll start! I’m listing these in order from most fun to least fun/liked.

1. Mesmer: In-combat mobility and control, distraction, dazes, PURPLE. BUTTERFLIES., extremely useful utility in groups, that ability to really kitten up a team’s fighting capabilities using a couple skills (Moa, Feedback, Portal, etc.)

2. Thief: MOBILITY (imo, the king of it, and I love zipping in and out of combat more than anything*), stealth, backstabs, BLINDS, ability to control the opponent and sort of instill a fear of an ambush, ability to turn a fight to their advantage very well, great group support if played right,
* = I would put Thief #1 because of this but for the fact that I am a Mesmer at heart

3. Elementalist: versatility in multiple roles, team utility, ability to move in and out of combat with great defensive skills, ELEMENTAL MAGIC (<3 water magic), high burst, conjure weapons, only downside being that they are hard to master as far as combos and skill order goes

4. Engineer: highly versatile and can fill any role in any group, provides perhaps the best SUPPORT of any class, high damage, ROCKET BOOOOOOOOOTS, ability to use elixirs/alchemy, but never kept my attention for very long due to lack of efficient condi cleanses

5. Necromancer: Death Shroud, Dagger/Dagger skills are great, provides good self sustain. Downsides are that I despise how little mobility they have and how selfish they end up being in group play. I would love a decent power ranged option (might play this then).

6. Warrior: My least favorite profession in GW1 because it was so simple. I have never felt a draw to play one (ever) except because Longbow is literally the coolest weapon skill set in the game.

7. Ranger: I despise pet classes, and really just don’t like anything the Ranger has to offer besides mainland Sword. And even then, that weapon isn’t for everybody. I guess spirits are cool? Not very fun in group play (with little to offer in dungeons).

8. Guardian: GOD I wanted to like this profession in GW2. I really really tried to like it. But despite Staff making me feel like Gandalf, I hate their entire kitten nal of weapon skills. If they were similar to Ritualists, I might be using this profession. But as-is, there is literally nothing about it that draws me in.

So what are your opinions on why you like/dislike professions?

Cheers!

I agree, I got chills once I realized what was happening to me.
And I absolutely loved that the orbs represented the dragons.
I assume it goes:
Purple = Kral
Light Green = Mord
Greyish = Zhaitan
White = Jormag
Red = Primordius
Blue = Bubbles

However, I really hope there is a connection to the Realm of Torment aside from aesthetically looking like the map for that area in GW1. The biggest question on my mind is this: are the gods stronger than the dragons? And if not, is the reason the gods have been “silent” due to the emergence of the dragons? Are the gods being held hostage in some way? Just interesting for me to think about

Nope. The airship was a rather insignificant part of Labyrinthine Cliffs; all the events happened elsewhere. It was somewhat interesting, but an easy trade for access to the Maguuma Wastes again.

Interesting. I understand that point of view, there wasn’t a major story connection to the ship. But what about actually being attached to the airship/Zephyrites? Not just lore-wise, but just enjoying their release?

To be honest, I’ve always loved the Festival of the Four Winds and that airship. I love the aspects and the fact that the Zephyrites are one of the only throwbacks to GW1 lore (Glint’s protectors). It was one of my favorite releases last year and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed spending time in the zone again this year.

When I saw the trailer begin with the ship though, I knew. And it felt like a punch in the gut once the first explosion happened.

That is one feeling I never experienced in Season 1. So if this type of emotional impact is something Anet is striving for in Season 2, then I am ALL in. I am already connected to and care about the story/what happens.

Mantras PvE?

Posted by: redux.1502

redux.1502

I never really caught onto the whole Mantra craze in PvE because my guild has always liked me using a plethora of reflects (and I enjoy them too). So I’m curious with the Harmonious/Empowered Mantras changes, what does this build actually look like? (Or what DID it look like) And what are the current thoughts on mantras in PvE?

Mantras and Reflects used to go together very, very well. You could get maximum reflect damage + maximum reflect uptime in one build (the old 0/30 or 10/30 builds). Maximum reflect damage came from Empowering Mantras and 30 in dueling. Maximum reflect uptime came from Signet of Ether and traited iWarden (+ focus 4 + feedback). You could do all that with one build (just swapping the healing skill depending on the situation).

Now, the maximum uptime and maximum damage builds are different. Maximum reflect damage is 6/6/0/0/2, again with Empowering Mantras, and therefore depending very much on mantras. The maximum reflect uptime build is something like 2/4/0/4/4 or 2/4/0/5/3— these don’t depend on mantras at all. These have traited wardens which you can double with Signet of Ether and get 100% coverage on, as before. You could also do a hybrid like 6/4/0/4/0 to get Empowered Mantras + 100% reflect uptime— however this sacrifices 2 points in dueling so its reflect damage is decidedly sub-optimal compared to a 6/6 build. Its DPS might be better than the 2/4 builds, but I’m not sure about this yet.

I should note the 6/6 builds are probably more sword/pistol + sword/sword, and the others are all sword/focus + sword/pistol.

Which one do you take? Depends on the situations. Lupicus, for example, calls for maximum damage on reflects. Alphard calls for maximum reflect uptime. Be dynamic and trait according to the situation. The 6/6 builds are better at single target DPS because of Duelists; the focus builds are better at AoE because of Wardens. There are some interesting tradeoffs at play now, instead of one catch all build— this is annoying, but perhaps a good thing in the long run.

Okay! That all sounds awesome! However I’m a little confused as to what you mean about depending very much on mantras. Do you mean taking Mantra of Pain and Resolve along with say, feedback? What slots skills are you referring to for each of the build (6/6/0/0/2 vs. 2/4/0/4/4)? Which traits exactly are you speaking about?

I’ve always been curious to get people’s opinions on which race best “suits” a certain class because of the wide variety of responses I usually get for the question. For example, in asking my friends which race best suits a Mesmer, I got these responses:

“Human Female because that was the mascot for Mesmer in GW1.”
“Human male because I had one as my main in the original Guild Wars.”
“Sylvari Female! They’ve got the most elegant and Mesmer-looking cultural armor.”
“Asura because their color on the race select screen is purple.”

So I pose the same question to the Warrior forums!

Regarding Interrupts:

It seems fairly pointless to have FI as a Grandmaster trait when there are NO other interrupt-buffing traits in Dueling at all.

Why not get rid of, change, or move FI into another trait line in a Master or Adept slot? 3 seconds of quickness for a mostly random chance is pretty lackluster in the Grandmaster slot.

You would make the 15 minor useless to anyone who does not use a Mantra.

True.
Either way I really like the idea of Sig of Dom getting Wastrel’s Punishment.
The point being: why not put something like WP on a Signet in order to shuffle traits around and make things more accessible?

Signet of Midnight: Very good skill, maybe allow the blind to be AoE.

Harmonious Mantras:
Now baseline for all Mantras (all get 3 charges).

Both signet of midnight and harmonious mantras currently work this way.

You misunderstand me, and I worded my text badly. What I meant is to make Mantras always have 3 charges as a BASELINE. Either that, or make HM the Master trait (15) and move Dazzling to Grandmaster, and put Wastrel’s Punishment on Signet of Domination as its new passive.

The second option is the one I prefer, as it allows Sig of Dom to be focused on interrupts and dealing damage to people who are interrupted. It would synergize nicely with other interrupt skills and make for a workable interrupt build in either Mantras or Signets.

Signet of Illusions: Adding stability (since Mesmers lack a great deal of this) for several seconds to the player only on activation along with lowering the cool down to ~60sec?

Signet of Domination:
Geared toward stunning and disrupting (lowering cool down on Diversion as new passive effect)
or
Geared toward condition damage (activating it now takes three conditions from the Mesmer and transfers (or copies) them to the enemy).

Signet of Inspiration: Increase the duration of the boons it copies by 10-20% when it copies them. Keep the cool down at 45 seconds, and prohibit copied boons from being replaced/refreshed by another Signet of Inspiration cast to prevent super spam.

Signet of Midnight: Very good skill, maybe allow the blind to be AoE.

Harmonious Mantras:
Now baseline for all Mantras (all get 3 charges).
OR
Change it to the Grandmaster 15 trait, move Dazzling to 25, and add Wastrel’s Punishment to a skill (Signet of Domination, anyone?) so that HM is easier to obtain

New “proc system” where if a certain criteria is met, when you cast your next Mantra, its effect is twice as powerful (2 conditions removed, 2x damage, 2x length of stability, 4 second daze). This is probably overpowered but I thought it was interesting!

redux.1502

I love the idea of changing Mantras and Signets to be more useful, as I love both skill types, but rarely want them on my bars (besides Signet of Midnight).

I think Signet Mesmers are simply lacking far too much when they use their signets. For example:

Signet of Illusions increases Illusion health, but when activated that is disabled and you get to recharge your shatter skills. This is on a 90 second cool down and that down time is extremely detrimental in chaotic, AoE-intensive environments. Perhaps adding a functionality such as stability (since Mesmers lack a great deal of this) for several seconds to the player only on activation along with lowering the cool down to ~60sec?

Likewise, Signet of Domination is simply lackluster in many situations besides sPVP. I love stuns and interrupts as much as the next GW1 veteran, but having 45 seconds where your conditions do less damage is pretty intense in hurting damage output. I would have to say I think that the skill is interesting, but should be:
Geared toward stunning and disrupting (lowering cool down on Diversion passively)
or
Geared toward condition damage (activating it now takes three conditions from the Mesmer and transfers (or copies) them to the enemy).

As for Signet of Inspiration, I love this skill, but it’s really only great for running around because of the chance for extra speed, or in strict support builds. I think it’s great for its niche, but if it is to see wider use in groups, it needs tweaking. Not sure where you guys stand on this skill but perhaps it could increase the duration of the boons it copies by 10-20% when it copies them? But keep the cool down at 45 seconds, and somehow prohibit copied boons from being replaced by another Signet of Inspiration cast to prevent super spam.

Signet of Midnight is in my top three favorite Mesmer skills. The increase in boon duration is fantastic, AND it breaks stuns, AND it causes unblockable blinds. ALL on a 30 second cooldown! I have nothing to say about this skill besides MAYBE allowing it to be an AoE skill active effect.

As far as Mantras go, the main issue is that they are so hard to get charged during combat, and are so hard to trait for. I think that latter part is being addressed by you guys well though, so it’s mostly the former that is an issue in many forms of play. One suggestion I’ve always liked is that Harmonious Mantras could become baseline for all Mantras. OR change it to the Grandmaster 15 trait, move Dazzling to 25, and add Wastrel’s Punishment to a skill (Signet of Domination, anyone?) so that HM is easier to obtain.
I was also discussing something with a Mesmer friend of mine about Mantras, which included a sort of “proc” system in which when a certain criteria is met, then whenever you cast a Mantra (say within 5 seconds), that Mantra’s effect will occur twice. So you’d get 4 conditions removed by Power Cleanse, 2 applications of damage from Power Spike, 2 Dazes (and 2 chances for stun from Power Lock/Confounding Suggestions), and double the duration of Stability from Power Break. Possibly overpowered, but I was really intrigued by the idea!

Personally I would love to see Interrupting become a more well-defined Mesmer role as it was in GW1. I’d really like having Signet of Domination focused on Interrupts rather than on Conditions. Adding that passive effect to lower Diversion’s cooldown would simply make things a lot more fast paced and make up for the semi-random methodology that comes with Interrupt builds as of now.

Hope that helps and I look forward to the changes you guys come up with for those things

Cheers!

Hello, regarding Mesmer weapon diversity:

I’ve noticed in my own play-time that I rarely use the Scepter or the Torch. I feel like I have no real benefit to using my auto attack on Scepter, because it works so slowly. I love the Illusionary Counter and Confusing Images, but Ether Bolt feels lackluster and I always feel as if I’m going to have major problems in a heated fight if I switch to scepter.

It feels very disjointed as a weapon. On one hand, you have pure damage (or conditions) from shattering clones on the auto attack. Then, you get a nice block for defense and torment. THEN we get 5 stacks of confusion thrown in. I just feel like the weapon isn’t focused on anything, which would be fine if it was all-around useful, but it also isn’t really GOOD for anything either.

Same situation applies for the torch. We have the Prestige, which is a WONDERFUL defensive ability and perhaps one of my favorite Mesmer spells. Then, you have a phantasm like Mage that honestly doesn’t merit my pressing the button unless I want an extra piece of shatter fodder for a quick Diversion.

My point is this:

While I absolutely love that you are opening up our traits a lot with this build, some of the focus on certain traits seems unnecessary when two of our weapons are so lackluster.

For example: Mirror of Anguish, sure it’s a buff but we don’t REALLY need that extra thirty seconds off the cool down, and the Mantra changes (while useful for build diversity) don’t address Mantra’s main problems – being far too detrimental to cast during fights.

I’m sure you guys will make passes at balancing some of these things in the future, but I wanted to bring the weapons up specifically because they are unfortunately very underwhelming.

Cheers, and keep up the great work you guys at Anet!

FINALLY some build diversity is being opened up!
It’s really the one thing I was wanting as a Mesmer, and now it’s here
Great job Anet!

Collaborative Development Topic- Game Modes

In terms of sPvP and tPvP:

I would love to see some permanent form of progression come out of it that is visible or available for others to see in WvW and PvE besides the /rank command. I love the idea of making legendary skins available in PvP, but how about making ascended weapons obtainable (for both PvP and PvE use) by progressing a certain number of ranks (say 20) in PvP? I love the game mode to death, but I feel no motivation to play it when I really get no palpable reward that crosses over when I exit. I understand that PvP and PvE are MEANT to be separate game worlds, and the separation of stats and traits all make sense to me. However, if cosmetics were transferrable to PvP in some form by participating in PvP, then it would make it a lot more rewarding.

For example:
- Completing the monthly PvP achievements grants you an item that allows you to choose a piece of armor in your inventory and copy its skin into a permanent sPvP skin for use whenever you like.
- Gaining 20 ranks in PvP grants you an item allowing you to unlock a legendary or ascended skin that you own in PvE for PvP.
- Capturing 10,000 points in PvP unlocks the ability to display your current PvP rank on your nameplate (similar to the map completion star, but with the animal figures).
- New discoveries possible in Mystic Forge using a new tier of materials that you gain by completing challenges in PvP
(Challenges being timed events that you can start at any time. If you finish (say get 200 kills in one hour) then you gain a specific crafting material for the challenge you started)
- Unlockable PvP-only miniatures (could be other rewards for Challenges)
- Completing Daily PvP achievements gives a chest that now holds only items usable by your profession/armor type rather than being random.

Just some of my ideas! Glad you guys are doing this, and happy to know you’re listening to the community

Can’t wait to see how you guys change game types and modes!
Cheers!

I’ve played a Mesmer only since a while after launch and have had no real experience past level 15ish with most professions. At that point I just lose interest. But I’m getting an insta-20 scroll with my Mezzie’s birthday coming up and I am trying to figure out which profession will be similarly satisfying as my Mesmer is. The thing I love about being a Mesmer is that I have so much diversity in my tactics: I can go all-out, stealth, kite, interrupt, confuse them by hiding among clones, shatter, teleport, and am all-around very mobile and quick in movements. I’m looking for a class primarily that has mobility, quick movement skills, and is able to get around easily in fights (isn’t cumbersome like the Necro). Do you think Thief fits that criteria? Thanks guys for your input!

FULLY support the idea tbh. I love Mantras but I just find they’re lackluster unless doing Shutdown on a specific target.
