I’m gonna reply with the same reply I give to people who are extremely unhappy about the game but give unrealistic suggestions: If you’re that distraught and the game makes you upset, then why are you still playing?
I for one enjoy GW2 VERY much. I try to branch out to all areas of the game, sPVP, WvW, PvE, Fractals, World Bosses, Guild Missions. And I have a BLAST. Part of what made GW1 so great was the story. And GW2 is finally building on that aspect. That is the only area where I felt something was missing in GW2 at launch. But now that they’re adding depth and breadth to the game’s story, I think GW2 is coming into its own. If you don’t want to be along for the ride, then… don’t.
I understand and agree with what you are saying, but I think it is more than just the story that is lacking in GW2. I think it is the connection to more than just a few NPC’s.
We had so much connection with Cynn, Mhenlo, Koss, Vekk, and many, many other NPC’s. Yes through the story they became characters we felt for. Other than the three order mentors, I don’t get that feeling from any of the GW2 NPC allies. I realize they are trying to build a connection with the DE2 NPC’s, but none of them have the same depth that the GW1 characters had IMO.
I think not only the story and it’s superb telling gave us connection to the game, but it’s very interesting characters did as well.
One thing I will also add. There was a lot more in GW1 than just killing things required to complete missions. Sure dungeons have some puzzles, etc. But most ‘missions’ here are just kill ’em and complete.
There is definitely truth to all of that. I guess I’ve had a different experience. I’ve tried not to take the game in all at once while I play through it and have had time to reflect on characters and develop them further in my head a little. Keil, Mai Trin, Destiny’s Edge (especially Caithe), Queen Jennah, Trahearne, have all made an impact on me and I genuinely care what happens to them.
I CAN say in support of your viewpoint, I do miss the connection/mystery around Gwen from GW1. Honestly I’ve never experienced a mystery in a video game that I was enamored by more than hers. All the way through the GWEN expansion, I would occasionally think back to her presence in the Pre-Searing and wonder just what happened to her. I want a connection like THAT in GW2 for sure.
As far as missions go, I think they’re attempting to take things in that direction in Dry Top/Maguuma. The Zephyr crystals vs. the Inquest, Tootsie, Rescue the Zephyrites, and Nochtil are all fairly unique iterations on events. Yes, they’re about killing things half the time but the fact that Anet is moving (at least slightly) away from just pew pew and win style quests is a positive sign to me. Hopefully as we move into other zones closer to Mordremoth, we’ll start getting even more quests that are interesting/fun to complete.
