Gating Content on Dailies?

in Blood and Madness

rodadams.5963

Best as I understand it, there’s another mission that can be done after we complete the meta. However, the meta requires the completion of several dailies to achieve.

Many of my friends and guildies have life schedules which prevent them from playing much more than a couple nights a week, and thus have limited exposure to be able to do dailies. Ordinarily, this just means they make less money/progress than if they played more, which they are fine with.

However, now, it seems like this seriously hinders them from doing the content…

This is…. a disconcerting choice.

I think I’d be a lot better with it all if I could queue up a number of something, and they all happen for me in the background, and at the end of “x days”, I get them all then.
What I’ve found the most frustrating thing about the current time gating is that I have to load the character with the right pre-req (be it appropriate crafting skill or “is holding crystals to transmute” or whatever), and then take them to the right spot…. each day.
If I could queue up “build 10 mithrillium”, and then come back 10 days later, and it’s done… that’d be SOOOO much better.

Maybe have a “layaway” system where you provide the materials now, and queue them all up, and then, at the end of however many days, you get the benefit in the mail. The balance is you get less annoyance, but have to wait until the end to get any of the items.

Kudos to the designers. A most excellent adventure.

I like how the difficulties come in the form of discovering the mechanics of each battle, and adapting your strategy to that…. instead of the “More HP & One Hit Kills” that we see in other areas of the game. Also, the “Stack and Smack” technique doesn’t work.

I also like how there’s very little in the way of “trash mobs” between the key encounters… it’s pretty much all key encounters. This keeps the pacing good, and doesn’t let it feel like a long grind.

Waypoints were plentiful, so you didn’t suffer a several minute run back to the action after a wipe. (I’m looking at you Arah….)

I like how coordination is needed, but not hideous enough to require voip or other pug unfriendly things.

If this is the standand you hold yourselves to for future updates, I will be extremely pleased.

That way, you could experiment with site XYZ, decide you don’t trust them, and cut them off without interfering with your guild site (or whatever).

in Dynamic Events

rodadams.5963

The Golem Mark II Pre-Event “Disable the containers before they release their toxins” could use some tweaking.

One big problem is that the game doesn’t actually tell you what you really need to do. The event is “Disable the containers…” and then you get a progress bar labeled “Off-line Containers”, when in fact, the objective is to kill a set number of Inquest that spawn from disabling the containers.
Renaming the progress bar title to something like “Inquest Morale” would be the most simple fix.

Perhaps the larger problem is that the containers don’t reset, and thus it’s possible to get into a situation where it’s no longer possible to spawn new inquest to kill and progress the event, yet you have to wait out the timer.
This opens things up where someone can grief a server by just running around touching all the containers w/o touching inquest, disabling the ability to do the Mark II boss.

Condition damage even less appealing in PvE.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: rodadams.5963

rodadams.5963

Condition Damage is already of limited appeal in PvE, for reasons that are fairly well worn:
- Stacking Caps
- Hard to Spike
- Several foes immune to some conditions (Destroyer vs Fire, Hylek vs Poison, Dredge vs Blind, others)
- Doesn’t have the same multiplicative scaling that Power+Precision+Crit has.

For these reasons, those who care about inflicting more damage tend to focus heavily on Direct Damage.

And now, with Ascended Weapons, Direct Damage gets basically a straight up 5% buff, slightly more with higher Power/Precision/Crit pts. Conditions get a few points more Condition Damage, which won’t add up to even 1 more damage per bleed stack.

Sure, with the removal of magic find, there’s some better options for extending condition duration, but that typically is of limited utility due to the stack limits and that most things are dead well before most conditions wear off.

The most obvious solution to this would be to buff up all forms of damage except weapon damage to be on par with the new ascended weaponry. This, however, will likely unbalance PvP, which currently doesn’t have Ascended gear.
This also gives little incentive to condition based players and/or non weapon based builds (think engineers and conjure eles) to ever upgrade their equipment.

My proposed solution would be to have all damage scale off the level and rarity of weapon you’re holding, including those from utilities. PvP wouldn’t be affected, since they would stay at L80 Exotics.

Do people agree this is an issue, and what other solutions can people come up with?

We’ve said this before, so it shouldn’t be a spoiler, but it’s clear that the message hasn’t totally gotten out there yet:

For the past year, we’ve had some larger projects going on in the background we haven’t discussed yet. Our major focus however has been on making the core Gw2 live game as solid as possible, details of what’s coming still to address that core game experience can be found here: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/looking-ahead-guild-wars-2-in-2013/
For the projects cooking in the background, we’ll go into more detail on those in the future.

Colin, I think the problem you’re facing is the old expression “Actions speak louder than words.”

Thus far, you’ve given us a lot of words, and while the glimmers of what’s been revealed sounds interesting, there’s also been a lot of dancing around the topic, which give very little meat to feed the hordes.

People are then basically left with judging your (the Anet collective, not you personally) actions, namely what’s been released. And with that, you get all the comments that you’ve doubtlessly been reading in the forums and other places.

Over the last few weeks, I’ve noticed something annoying start to happen. From time to time, we’ll hit a checkpoint type step, and suddenlt the floating green star asking if I want to exit the mission appears right on top of me. One quick hit of the interact key, and suddenly I’m kicked out, all progress lost.

Then I’ll move a bit forward, and it pops up again.

This is very not cool.
1) It’s way too easy to exit when you didn’t mean to.
2) It’s completely not needed… there’s the exit mission button right by the map.
3) If you’re doing someone else’s story, it’s easy to think that you’re done, and they are just grabbing the loot.
4) It interrupt the flow of the story, especially since it pops up a dialog right in the middle of your face.

One example story was last night doing “A Light in the Darkness”, where it would keep stalking us as we walked the path with the Pale Tree in Orr, before going underground to fight the Eye.

It’s happened on others as well, but I forget which stories and steps.

Exactly why should I buy Character Slots?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: rodadams.5963

rodadams.5963

Hehehe. Well, disregarding my question of why you would want to go for GWAMM on all your characters…

I only got GWAMM a couple times, but I liked having the option.

However, there were many individual titles I made it a point of getting across all of “The Main Ten”, such as Guardian & Protector of Tyria, Cantha, & Elona. Similar for doing all the Dungeons and elite areas in both Normal and Hard Mode.

Learning how to do all these areas on all the classes was a neat challenge, which the game helped track, and made them character specific achievements. It was only when you got the Hall of Monuments that they merged into a whole account.

In GW2, I have:
- Open World PvE hearts/vistas/pois.
- Story Mode Dungeons.
- Fractals.

None of the jumping puzzles, diving goggkitten ss achievements, crafting, zone discovery, etc.

My whole point is that you have options. Yes, laurels are time gated. As are Guild Missions and Fractals. But then, taken all together, the time-gate isn’t as onerous as you might imagine. I have 4 characters with full ascended gear, with around 100 laurels, 60 pristine fractal relics, and around 40 guild commendations extra on the side. Badges of Honor makes purchasing any of the above a lot easier as well.

Oh, I’ve already bit the bullet on gearing several characters up in Exo gear, and some with Ascended. But it hurts.

However, since I’ve been saving laurels for Amulets for everyone, I’ve not even looked at the other things I could’ve gotten, if I were focusing on fewer characters per account:
- Advanced Gathering tools. 2 laurels for 125 use T6 tools? wow.
- Endless Mystery Cat Tonic sounds neat.

Other things I’d have considered:
- Buying the endless gathering tools from the gem shop… but the “several alts” mentality would mean I’d need to buy 8x of each… or $240USD in gems!!!! no kitten way.
- Spending Guild Commendations on anything but Earrings.

(PS Anet never advertised this game would have no vertical progression. It does. i.e. existence of levels and rarity level. And oh yea, GW1 had them too. i.e. title tracks)

Very true about GW1 having title tracks. However, all but a very small few were Character Bound. Once I got GWAMM on one character, it was completely new challenge and effort to go get GWAMM on another character.
My main GW1 account ended up with 16 characters, because playing it again had meaning.

Also, there were several ‘daily’ activities, namely the Zaishan quests, but again, they were all character bound. If I chose to do so, I could run the same Z-quest across all my characters. Thus, feeding that mass of characters was limited by how much time I wanted to play total, not how many days in a row I logged in.

Dungeons award the gold once per day per run but the tokens for each alt is still 60 for the first time each and that’s important for people with goals to get dungeon armor or just grind dungeon tokens as a source of rares.

This was changed with today’s patch. You get the 60 tokens once per path per day per account, not per character.

If that’s true, that’s actually a reversion of a previous change. It used to be per account, then it was per character. kinda sucks if it’s true.

Nowhere in today’s patch notes do I see this change. Only changes to loot and gold.

I haven’t tested it myself yet, but according to several threads in the Dungeons forum, like the one linked below, it was changed to that.

That sounds like a LOT of work. If you just want to farm all day, sure. That’s gonna be more profitable.

It’s not necessarily about farming… it’s about getting rewarded for what you’re doing.
Part of the fun of doing the big event stuff is getting the loot at the end. It’s not really a “farm” mentality, it’s a “I didn’t just completely waste my time” mentality.

I totally get the “one of each profession” argument. After all, that’s what I did out of the gate on the early launch day. I have them all to L80, and mostly geared up

However, at this point, I don’t see the point of getting more character slots, as opposed to getting a new account.

Consider what a second account gets you:
- Five more slots, for the price of four.
- An extra bank tab (granted, likely filled with account bound fluff.)
- Twice the dungeon rewards
- Twice the dragon event rewards
- Twice the T6 gathering nodes
- Be able to play the discovery game twice

Alternatively, getting more char slots gets you:
- a few percent more XP and Karma from kills… easily offset from all the account achievements to get all over again.

My belief is that if at the beginning, had I bought a second account, instead of three extra slots, and spread my eight professions across the accts, I’d be in a much better place today.

Exactly why should I buy Character Slots?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: rodadams.5963

rodadams.5963

In the end, I’m just not seeing any point in buying extra character slots anymore.

Almost any reward of worth is now being limited on a “once per day per account” basis.
However, the task of gearing and leveling multiple characters requires you to split those rewards amongst them, thus making extra characters a burden on your account.

I could potentially believe a “replayability” arguement…. except that a lot of the fun things to do, like discovering all the zones, doing all the jumping puzzles, etc, are all account bound. So once your first 1-4 characters has done it…. that’s about it.

In the US these days, Amazon sells a complete new account for the same price as you’d pay for 4 character slots going the cash->gem route. It seems like this would be the better route to go for expanding your playing base, and have a private guild between the two for joint storage.

The only “downside” I see is achievement chest progress… but really that’s not a big deal either. Once you’ve done most of the ‘discover XXX’ options, your main AP’s come from dailies, monthlies, and Living Story. Depending on how much you play, this is easily covered in the timeframes, and you can always focus on the ‘primary’ account first. So I’m not really seeing that as a big issue.

At this point, I basically am regretting buying the three extra slots I have. It seems it would have been MUCH better to have bought a second account, and to have split my characters across them.

Then there’s Gendarran, which is 25-35, and Lornar’s which is 25-40.

Adding some form of barrier to Ascended gear, which is materially better than Exotic, makes some level of sense.

However, if anything Celestial is a more “casual” set of armor than the others. It’s great for the person who doesn’t want to have to worry about what armor to get, doesn’t mind being suboptimal, and can just play whatever.

I could (maybe) see this level of commitment for something like Ascended Armor. But not Exotic, when all the others are so easily obtained.

Consider answering questions like “What Jumping Puzzles am I missing?” or “Which weapon should I be working on?”

I’d love it if when sorting by completion, fulled completed tracks could be placed on the bottom of the list.

Alternatives:
- Option to hide completed.
- List view, so more than eight show up at a time.

Griefing WvW JPs

in WvW

Posted by: rodadams.5963

rodadams.5963

Wouldn’t it encourage people to try WvW a whole lot more if there was a sub-meta achievement that focused entirely on WvW?

Maybe put kites at various supply depots in each of the borderlands and EB, and/or other such ideas that
a) give people a more “mainline” experience of WvW.
b) isn’t as prone to straight up griefing like we see in OS.
c) is something those already in WvW would enjoy.
d) is clearly seperate from the PvE.
e) could be more than the current 5 or 20 Achievement Points, and thus actually MORE incentive for people to try it out.
f) and then, perhaps, as part of a larger set of WvW achievement plan, include OS.

The part that rubs most people wrong, IMO, is that you have a meta achievement like “Learning to Kite” which is 6/7 PvE, and 1/7 WvW. Not that there’s WvW rewards in the Living Story. By lumping OS in with the likes of Spekk’s Lab and Pig Iron Quarry, you send a strong message that OS is “just another jumping puzzle”. And then people get pwned hard for walking in the door.

I’ve played WvW on and off, and I have to say that OS, especially these last couple weeks, makes me significantly less likely to play more. On the other hand, rewards tied to more “mainline” WvW activities (supply runs, taking towers, etc), would be much more compelling.

I guess the best way to put this is that it feels out of place.

Imagine if they came out with a new PvP map where you had a Lupicus Gigantus sitting on top of each control point, and before either side could cap the point, Lupi had to die first.

Having the various facets (PvP, WvW, PvE) in the same game isn’t the problem. Mixing the rewards is. And no, I most certainly do not agree that WvW is an extension of PvE.

The puzzle itself is not terribly difficult. A bit long perhaps, but not overly difficult. Having people around who can do remote knockbacks and such, just because they happened to start off 10 minutes before I did, is not PvE.

I tried following all the various hints posted above concerning how to get the achievment. However,
After queueing to get into EB for 40 minutes, my group of 8 guildies, plus some world mates who joined in, were able to get to the colosseum, where a pack of 15 opponents were laying mass AoE and marks just outside the exit.

I suppose I could try and find a time where my server zergs up to power through… assuming I see the right thread in time… and am able to play at that time…. and can get into the map anywhere close to the time….

Obsidian Sanctum again?

in Bazaar of the Four Winds

rodadams.5963

If you don’t like WvW, then there are a lot of achievement points (not titles, those are practically impossible in a game’s lifespan to obtain) you wont be getting.

Yes, but they are all neatly tucked away in the WvW tab, which I politely ignore, and are not sitting there mocking me on the LS tab, where I’ll likely get all the other achievments without much trouble.

Oh, and I play on a Tier 1 server, where our competitors have 24/7 coverage. A 10 man group trying to get through during Sky Pirates was insufficient to overcome the gankerfest.

And to be clear, if they added a section of the LS achievements that were all WvW or PvP focused, and had a meta achievement to wrap all of those together, I’d be perfectly fine. Having a meta achievement that 90% PvE, but you have to go WvW, is just obnoxious.

I say I won’t be getting it, because every time I attempted to get to the Aetherblade cache, I encountered multiple groups from other servers that would just camp out at select chokepoints, and gank anyone trying to complete it.

For me the biggest gripe is that the Living World has thus far felt like nothing more than a Parade of Events.

You want to take that which traditionally has been done in an expansion, and break it up into smaller chunks, released more often? That’s great.

However, consider the person coming into the game after taking a month or two off, for whatever reason. They should be able to see that the world has changed, and be able to spend quite some time “catching up” on what all has happened.

At present, instead, they have “well, this week you’re supposed to go kill ten rats in each of several different zones”.

Then again, I’m not a WvW expert, but when I do go, I don’t see any patterns of “all thieves are Asuran” or anything like that.

Maybe a partial fill sets a stack to the back of the line?

That wouldn’t make sense, because when the other 8 orders for 250 filled, they appeared in the pickup window as several pages worth of piles of taffy of all different sizes, suggesting they were fulfilled by many different steps of partial fulfillment.

What it does sound like though, is that in some situations, partial fulfillment sends an order to the back of the queue, and in others it doesn’t. I have nowhere near enough insight to determine what conditions set this off.
Hopefully Mr Smith and/or his collegues have sufficient tracking to figure this out.
