[RaW] Kaineng
To be honest, I’m confused. We were fine. Our mechanics were running smooth, but people didn’t like stealth. They thought perma stealth was op, and it was, so they nerf that, and a ton of other aspects for no reason. This is the part I’m confused about, why does EVERYBODY have access to what they so avidly hated. Mesmers got stealth, okay, a 3 sec stealth for confusion makes sense. Then ranger gets stealth. Um, why? Oh wait. The Mesmers stealth now has no limit to their stealth. Why doesn’t SR have that? Then, stealth gets nerfed. Why? Nothing was wrong. Next thing I see, warriors are disappearing into thin air. I’ve even heard of a way necros can use wells to get stealth. WHY IS EVERYONE A THIEF?! It’s turned us into a lesser form of a warrior or necro. It’s just frustrating.
I think hammer is possible. In the fractal dungeon where you use the hammer to explode the giant man, the first boss uses a hammer and uses super cool looking skills to throw down wells. Seems like it could be implemented.
They wouldnt need to keep nerfing Thief if they did 2 things:
1) Remove Initiative. Turn weapons into proper cool downs
2) Fix Stealh
I don’t think that initiative needs to be changed. Its not messed up, its part of what makes thieves thieves. As for stealth, I am curious as to what you think is wrong?
In roaming? don’t listen to them, they are badies.
in zerg train yes, but thief was never a train class.
I disagree, if specced right, the thief can be VERY good at zerging. Daggerstorm as well as choking gas and cluster bomb (aoe damage and bleed).
Thank you for the information. I’ve decided to make a warrior because of the superior mobility and higher damage output while still being very tank. Thank you
So now – every aspect of warriors is under attack by " nerf this or that" type threads. Because bads will be bads.
You should try playing thief… (Not complaining, just saying it’s worse there than here)
This build isn’t meant to be a serious build. It may not yield the same results as the meta builds that are out right now, like the p/d build I run, but it is fun. You can kill things, because after some more WvW play, I have 1v1ed a few classes and done some havocing and the build puts out enough dos to be damaging and put on pressure, but maintains you health well enough to not need to use the active heal. Its not meant to be a serious build, just am experiment on if thieves can sustain a tank build effectively. The answer, IMO, is yes.
So with having time off from everything, I was thinking of making a heavy class. I started about 3 days ago and caught my warrior up to my guardian at level 40. Now I have a predicament. As I mainly play WvW and a decent bit of PvE, I was thinking of making it into a complete tank. So I found the healway guardian and the regen warrior. Both seem to be spectacular for sustaining above 90% health in zergs and 1vX’s. So I came here to decide. Which is better, Healway Guardian or Regen Warrior.

I play in a lower population server, but we don’t have it that bad. Ive never not completed a dragon. More people is a problem in our server too, but mainly in WvW. I’ve never even heard of this happening. Maybe its not that guild leaders aren’t participating, maybe its just that they aren’t on at night.

I was in the forums with people complaining about how thieves CANT be a tank and I made this build just to see. Now, it turns out thieves can be anything like Anet said! I have 16k health which isn’t great but 3.1k armor and still do okay damage.
I made this build for fun because I had a lot of gold and figured I hadn’t really spent it in a couple months, so I tried this. It turned out to be very fun with EXTREME heals as I heal 50 passively per second, and 300 per hit and 300 per second in stealth.
Overview: Full clerics. Everything is clerics. Then you run 0/0/30/20/20.
The dagger can be replaced by the sword, but I choose not to because, A) Backstabbing still hits for about 2k on guardians, making it very low for a thief, but still decent damage since you won’t lose health
Sognet of malice doesn’t factor in how hard you hit, only IF you hit. Since the dagger AA is very fast, I choose them because it heals the most.
So far this build has been pretty effective, I’ve done one 1v1 in WvW and soloed 2 lv80 champs. Haven’t had much playtime with it, but I will update the thread when I do.
I am a thief w/ 2k hours, and lots of experience, and I approve this message. It would help in more that pvp. Give us something like a torch so we can have aoe fire. And I mean MAIN and off hand torch for maximum but age

I’m just curious, is there a level at which you surpass their entire ranking system, or does it just generate random titles.
P/D is very viable and is probably my favorite build. I solo champs with it, I 1vX with it, and i command with it. So that’s another, as well kitten main builds, though they are much more difficult to play.
Full dire is what I run and I am nearly immortal, even commanding. Zergs=no problem, and I love it, though settlers was one that skipped my mind, so May farm some and try it, keep you posted
I would love a thief rifle, but first I would like to be able to dual wield torches
give them melee aoe/cleavage and it would be a pretty nice weapon for wvw and pve. Yes, main hand torch, and I personally think it would be awesome.
Yeah, I know how hard tone is to do in type, but we aren’t paired up this week. We have DR and GOM. GL to your server and go Asuran thieves!
Not all of us are bad, just the fact that we have no people is what makes it seem that way, besides, I’m a transfer from blackgate, got sick of the ques.
Assuming you run a typical backstab build, you definitely need stealth removes a condition. The trick with a backstabber, you need to steal to them before they get to you, then get in stealth and haul kitten out of the AoE they drop, then prolong stealth with a utility soil and get a backstab in, then get out. Their bomb kit is ridiculous. So much PbAoE.
The easiest way, don’t run a backstab build. I know people will say that it is the only viable build, and other non sense, but that’s not true. A Valkyrie s/d build is awesome, even with the 1/4 cast time, or a dire p/d build, my personal choice, is extremely amazing.
Sorry, but on my phone I cannot access it, but I too play D/P. I used to run a mix of carrion and dire but recently went to full dire and it was beyond worth it. Chryscola (not sure if that’s how it is spelled, but it is close) and I have 2.7k armor, 21k health, and a nice 1500 Condition Damage. I use rune of the afflicted which is AWESOME because it gives a lot of bleed duration, and the standard series of condition damage buff.
If you are in Kaineng, I would be happy to help you out!
MAIN HAND TORCH!!!!!!!!!
I want either a greatsword, an above-water spear/trident, or a rifle. Mostly the spear/trident, then rifle, then GS. Maybe even two handed torch
or just main hand torch and off hand torch.
You would probably enjoy the condition p/d build.
Full dire armor, dire weapons, with Sigil of Malice and Sigil of Bursting.
Run traits 0/0/30/20/20 with full chryscola trinkets. You should get about 2.7k toughness, 21k health, and 1500 condi damage, more if you use foods. I rarely die. It has to be more than 5 people to kill me without me killing 1-3 people. I’ve never actually accomplished more than a 1v3 but I believe it’s possible, if you fight against the right organization of enemies. Very good build and is able to solo champs, I would know, I’ve soloed about 12.
What: Pistols
Why: their direct damage is too high. We should make the auto attack cost one imitative per shot because it does so much damage so quickly. Also the 2 skill should just be removed because thieves shouldn’t be able to root people, or apply vulnerability, especially with the extreme direct damage of pistol AA. While were at it, pistol shouldn’t be available as an off hand. Blind on a THIEF?! Outrageous! Just make pistol unable to even have an off hand weapon because, I mean, that AA is just so O kittening P!
sarcasm;)
Honestly, there isn’t much of a hope for short bow as primary. I tried a while back on about 7 different builds and 3 different gear types, but I never found it close to par with the meta builds. HOWEVER, if you want a good ranged guild, try full dire gear with dire p/d and short bow off hand. It is an amazing build that has high armor, health, and condition damage. The build I’m using is a variant of one I found on YouTube. Just YouTube Laela Blackbird (not me) and use that. Also watch how they play. It is pretty easy to get used to, and is good in 1vx’s and champ soloing (I’ve soloed about 10 champs with this build, so far, and all of them WERE lv 80)
Yes, run a p/d build and destroy everything, heartseeker and backstabbing free!
I run a p/d condition build and the only class that I really can’t kill is a condition necro. They can just put them on so much faster that it usually ends with me being downed, and them being at about 20% health. It’s just frusturating. A power necro, no problem, but that condition transfer is a kitten when you stack 17 stacks of bleed on them then they just throw it back.
After that would definitely come engis. They are pretty difficult. Then, well, I would say warrior but I just feel that they either run a glass cannon that I can dodge and then kill while they are on cool down, or a tank condi build which I’ve learned to counter. There are probably other types of warriors out there, but I just fight so many it’s kind of easy now. So instead I’m going to have to go with a skilled thief. A really good thief can be very difficult to kill and I probably only have a 75% success rate against GOOD thieves. I’m not talking glass cannon backstabbing thieves. I fought one s/d thief for 15 minutes, and that was fun. The most fun fights I have, and some of the most challenging fights, are against my fellow thief.
Well, people have mentioned transmutation crystals, but those usually (not sure if there is a way to get them through gameplay) require real money or a decent bit of gold you can change into gems. HOWEVER, there is a build with these stats. A very effective condition build which I use. It runs 0/0/30/20/20 with dire pistol and fire dagger. Very good for wvw. To see more of this build look up Laela Blackbird on YouTube (not me). I first decided to run pistol dagger off of those videos and the build is in the description.
The revenge of Dual Pistols!!!
What is the over all opinion of the Dec. 10th patch and what went well and what went wrong?
Keep it civilized please!
I’m running a very interesting build currently that seems to be very effective. I run pvt on two pieces, with rampagers on two, and dire on two. It seems to work well so far. I use full seeker trinkets keeping my crit damage at 50% and my overall attack stays at 3300. I have 2500 armor w/ 18k health. It’s effective because my unload will hit 5k on average. This generates decent burst for the survivability. I have the condition effects because what happens when you are 1vx and run out of iniative? Basic attack that Frits for 1k and stacks a bleed ticking for 115 isn’t bad. Granted the duration is far below good, it does do some okay damage through conditions sense it is a basic attack. I use caltrops for additional dps. Very VERY helpful when fighting more than one enemy and when serving.
Use signet of malice and you never have a problem. Zerging is easy, it’s hard to die when you have ricochet and heal 1k or more per unload. Throw caltrops, blow know tive on unload, then dagger storm. You are one of the highest dps outputs despite having a high survivability build. I’ve found this works very well in dungeons, even speed runs. I’ve done CoF in some decent times w/ this build.
What: nothing
Why: Thieves already got hit a thousand times by the nerd bat and are just starting to get buffed to being balanced.
This thread is a joke, you really expect people to WANT thief nerds unless they unskillfully play another profession? Let me reinforce the idea that if you complain about thieves, you are an UNSKILLFUL player of a different class because any good player can go toe to toe with a thief and it comes down to how well you play, not the profession.
To me personally, yes, thieves are the most fun profession, but it is all relative to your personal opinion.
So, assuming you are doing mostly pve at lv 14, signet of malice, as stated earlier, is am amazing tool and worth the skill point(s) (not sure if it is one or three). Also, for low level pve, a signet build is probably most effective (that’s what I did for leveling, though I’ve played since launch so was on at the first to discover leveling tactics) as being able to kill things is key in pve. Primarily, you will probably want to use signet of agility as that will be a greater boost to unload (primary damage skill for p/p) as each critical hit jumps the damage much more than power. The next priority should be signet of shadows (speed boost) as movement across a map is key when leveling. Speed is everything when leveling!
As you get to higher levels, signets are not the answer to your problems. You need utilities. Having played a thief, and only a thief, since launch, i still do use the speed signet, because it is so much of a convenience.
If you are using pistols as a definitive choice for leveling, which is by no means a bad choice, you will want to get, I think it’s twenty points, into critical strikes for the 10% damage boost to pistols which is HUGE.
I recommend using a sword/pistol or sword/dagger for off hand as the pistol provides enough range, but the swords cleave is good in pve, and having a melee weapon is a must at level 40+ IMO. Deffinetly at level 70-80. At 80, sword main hand and dagger main hand can be changed out, but nothing parallels the swords ability to mob, except for maybe ricochet on the pistol.
Oh and OP xD it was not sarcasm, I love asuras and my guardian is actually one. I guess the sarcasm considering warriors made u think that everything I said is sarcastic xD
No, I know it wasn’t sarcastic. I wasn’t either, my thief is an asura, and so are both my guardian and warrior. All three of my characters are asura too.
Thanks for the replies! I am going to take my warrior to 80 and see how that goes. Also, Mr Karhwk; why wouldn’t you make an Asura?
Basically what the title is. I have played a thief since launch and have had loads of fun, but am looking for something a little more viable in both commanding now that I have enough money, and fractals. I was thinking of something like a regen warrior/guardian that is basically immortal. I’ve seen a few videos of warriors doing this, and only one of a guardian, but was wondering which would be the superior class for this role.
I have both a level 30 warrior and guardian, and they are equally fun. Figured this would be the best place to avoid bias.
Server: kaineng
Enjoy: meh.
Again: I don’t see why not. I mean I am in a bottom of the bronze bracket server who had 4 of our main WvW guilds leave in the past 4 months and commanders screw us over, but it is free achievement points. It does give some competition to it. Despite being screwed over, we managed to hang in there, so it really has to do with what server you play on.
Congratz to my fellow comrades we deserve a roll of honour , ill start it in no particular order :
[Icoa] imperial Coalition
[RK] Radiant knights
[WM] War MachineAdd youre guild if you contributed below ty
Now transfer to the bottom tier server and see if you can pull them to the top. Only then will you have the respect of the people.
Wouldn’t that just be Kaineng 2.0?
Yeah! Go Kaineng!
We would be fine if people stacked better and more than five people were in TS3
I have commanded as a thief for a week now and find very little problem that is class related. My biggest problem is lack of skilled players for backup. I say push through and the people just don’t always push, stranding me and the three other people who listen on the other side of the Zerg. A good build to run is high regen. I like using my Karka destroyer bow (called “Crustacea”, I got it from a Karla champ I killed with two other people) and having signet of malice and assassins reward, giving awesome heal per cluster bomb. Even the basic attack I great in a zerg vs Zerg fight. The aoe and healing per hit is very hard to counter, and, last case scenario, dagger storm cripples and heals like no other while bouncing bleed and 2k crits.
I run 0/30/20/20/0. Pretty effective, the only necessary traits are executioner on criterial strikes, which works great in zergs because many people get below 50% pretty fast, so you get a heavy damage boost. Second is assassins reward, which is awesome because spamming cluster bomb is amazing damage and heal with just SoM, and is even better with Assasins reward.
I think you should be able to de-weaponize people. That would be really cool. OP, but cool. Just come up take their greatsword, throw it away, then wail on their defencess body.
No joke, that is basically our only condi removal, don’t complain, just don’t be that guy. No body likes that guy.
I’ve seen a lot of claims that condi mesmer and necro are best, and yes, they are incredibly difficult to kill, HOWEVER, I find my thief to be ultimate destroyer of all. It’s very difficult to hit what you can see. Then just out of no where, BOOM, 5-7k backstab, with the lowest hit on a full bunker guardian being 4,723. Then a jump skill that’s spammable and does 5-6k per hit.
Granted I got my tag last night and have only out in about 5 hours on it, I feel I know a decent amount. For example, I got a Zerg that was being commanded by a certain commander whom I will not name, and we’re getting wiped because we were attacking someone else’s BL. Not saying he was bad, because he did many things that I learned from, but seeing what he did when fighting the enemy Zerg (which had about 12 more than us) I learned a few things. We were both in TS so when he left I took command. Instead of moving stacked, and most of our people bugging out because the whole group was surrounded and being AoEd to death, I clustered, then as they got to about 600 range we charged, and spread out. This obviously took them by supersize, having done the same thing 4 times in a row, and we ended up wiping. We wiped them three more times, and took both bay and hills until I passed it off to another commander.
The point is, you need to be able to adjust strategy. One strategy failed three times, so I took a more aggressive stance.
Here are three things I can recommend having watched good and bad commanders since launch:
1) Always supply your Zerg
2) Be sure your Zerg responds to you but having consistent stacking to check supply, but this also shows how quick your Zerg will respond in a fight.
3) Be able to stay calm and not die: I am a thief commander with not the tankiest build, however, from so much experience in Zerg fighting, I am able to survive longer than my entire Zerg. Just pure experience, not what class I am.
4) and one last thing because I forgot; if you take on an enemy DONT RUN! You aren’t another mindless soldier, you need to fight tot he death or organize and leave as a group. I personally don’t run, I fight to the death, and usually we will leave them with only five people up. Even if you do that, they either take enough time rezzing for you to return and wipe, or they port, and it is basically a stalemate.
Remember I have only been a commander for 5 hours, but those have been 5 lucrative hours.
I have played thief since launch and there have been some skills that just seem to not belong in their weapon set (I.e. Death Blossom). I though it would be an awesome way to be able to create new builds if each slot in 1-5 had two or three skills that you could switch out to have a more diverse build and many more options. What are your thoughts?
-Oscuro
Condi or power p/d thief?
I didn’t know where to really post this to get ideas from everyone, so I decided here seed like the best place. So I was thinking of what a new class could possibly be, and realized two things. 1) There are only two heavy armor classes, so the next class wil (hopefully) be heavy 2) Each armor type has a class with no weapons swapping, but rather different modes, so again this will hopefully be implemented in any new class.
So combining these I came up with a few unique ideas.
1) Samurai: They use short bows and swords. Knowing that samurai a only utilize one thin sword, I felt it would be a cool mechanic if they used one handed swords in one hand but had a full 5 skills. This and they could have different “stances” which they could use with both the SB and the sword.
2) Arab based class: again, using swords and bows but also axes, and too have different stances.
3) Walker/Wanderer: Walker use blunt weapons to inflict knock out blows on their enemies. They wear heavy armor and switch between day and night/light and dark, and eclipse/equilibrium, to provide a utility of skills for them to bash in their enemies skulls
